I. Product Description
The HBX Small Anvil was created as a result of demands from the field to achieve higher strap tension on
products that have a small package face. The Small Anvil reduces the size of the anvil and hot knife and
increases the amount of tension that is applied by the winder. The goal of the project was to create a machine
that can tightly and reliably strap a rigid package (approximately 2¾”w x ¾” h). The HBX Small Anvil can be
used with all current strap offerings utilized by the standard HBX machine.
The HBX Small Anvil is only available on the 16” x 10” chute size. This chute size covers more than the 80/20
of products that will be strapped with it. Because of limitations of the head and machine program, we elected to
make this the only size available.
Unlike the HB Small Anvil, the HBX-4300 Small Anvil is available with nearly all of the options that you can
order on the standard HBX machine. The only options NOT available are roller table tops and Automatic Cut
and Re-feed. In order to achieve the desired performance, certain concessions needed to be made. This means
that ACR can no longer fit on Small Anvil machines. However, the EZ Clear system is available if a powered
chute clearing system is desired.

III. Features, Benefits and Options
The HBX-4300 Small Anvil will take Signode to a new standard for strapping machine performance. Extensive
testing and numerous customer visits around the globe have shaped this machine into a world class piece of
equipment. Below are many of the features and benefits of this new line of equipment:
Speed
The HBX is the fastest bundler on the market. It can apply up to 70 straps per minute in optimum conditions.
This speed is dependent on several factors such as load size, tension applied, and strap placement.
Reliability
The HBX has 40% fewer parts than competitive machines. It is designed to run for millions of cycles without
interruption.

Durability
The frame is made of 7 gauge steel. The HBX has the heaviest, most robust frame of any strapping machine on
the planet. This heavy design is made to survive in the roughest, most demanding environment.
Jamless Design
The HBX Small Anvil expands on the lessons learned from the Standard HBX. An improved guiding system
ensures reliable feeding in all conditions. If there is a strap jam, the machine will attempt to clear itself before
any covers are needed to be opened.
Easy Access Guides
The HBX is the only machine on the market that allows complete access to the ENTIRE strap path with no
tools. Competitive machines claim to have easy strap path access, but their definition means that you must
remove screws, springs, and other easily lost parts. The HBX does not require you to remove any small parts to
access the strap path.
Out of Strap Feature - Standard
One of the biggest complaints about our competitors’ equipment is that a piece of strap is often pulled into the
machine when the end of the coil is reached. The HBX features an out of strap feature that fully ejects the end
of the coil, eliminating the possibility of it jamming the machine.
Adjustable Legs – Standard
With the HBX, you have several options for how the machine can be integrated into your customer’s conveyor
line. The HBX comes standard with adjustable height legs that adjust the tabletop height from 26” to 40”.
“Mistake Free” Coil Loading
Like other Signode bundling equipment, the HBX Small Anvil features “Mistake Free” bi-directional coil
loading. This allows you to load the machine regardless of coil orientation. The strapping can pay off of the coil
from either the right or left with no modifications or adjustments to the machine.
No Hot Knife Adjustment
Signode Engineered Products engineers were able to create a unique system to maintain proper hot knife
temperature and weld cooling time. As tension increases, the cooling time is automatically increased to ensure a
strong weld. If fine tuning is needed because of changes in environmental conditions (heat or cold), this is easily
adjusted on the PLC panel.
Low Tension Capabilities
The powered open chute system of the HBX allows users to apply as little as 2 pounds of tension on sensitive
bundles.
Easy Hot Knife Access
No tools are necessary to access the hot knife. The hot knife is easily pivoted clear of the anvil for routine
cleaning. It is easily removed without tools for more thorough cleaning or replacement.
Simple Motor Troubleshooting
Any motor can be tested using the motor test buttons. This allows you or your customer to quickly diagnose
motor problems. These buttons are found on the electrical panel, like other HBX machines. Page 4

Available Options
EZ Height System and High Leg Kit
The EZ Height leg system (patent pending) allows a user to adjust the height of a machine using a
common socket wrench or power tool. This eliminates the need for a fork truck, and allows the
machine to be moved easily between lines of varying heights. If the standard 40-inch tabletop
height is not tall enough, a “High Leg Kit” is available that increases the range up to 40” to 56” in
height.
“EZ Clear” Button
One of the newest features on the HBX is the “EZ Clear” button. If the machine has a strap jam that can not be
cleared automatically, the operator simply presses this button located on the control box. The chute
automatically opens, and the strap is cut off. This allows the operator to clear the chute without opening any
panels or tabletops.
Floor Lock Kit with HD Casters
This option allows the user to securely lock the machine firmly in line with their conveyors.
This feature also upgrades the casters to a 4” Heavy Duty design that makes the movement of
the machine throughout the plant a much easier task.
Industrial Strength Interlocks
Industrial strength interlocks allow your customer to seamlessly integrate their Signode
Strapping equipment into their packaging lines. The Industrial Strength Interlock is an industry
standard plug that can be used to cycle the machine from an external source, such as your
customer’s conveyor controls. A wiring schematic is included with this option.

Common Questions about the HBX-4300 Small Anvil machine
1. What is the smallest size package I can strap with the HBX Small Anvil?
The HBX-4300 Small Anvil was designed from the beginning to reliably and tightly strap a rigid
(approximately 2¾”w x ¾” h) package. Compressible packages and round bundles have different properties, so
it is best to consult with your Signode representative if you have a concern about a specific product.
2. How much tension can the HBX with Small Anvil Option apply?
The amount of tension that is applied to the package varies greatly from product to product. However, the HBX
Small Anvil can break any strap that is approved for use in the HBX.
3. How is this machine different from a regular HBX-4300?
The anvil area of the head has been completely redesigned. By reducing the size of the anvil and hot knife, and
increasing the tension capability of the winder, we are able to apply much higher tension to smaller packages
than with the standard machine.
4. Can I order the Small Anvil Option on chute sizes other than 16”x10”?
No. Because of limitations of the head and the program that is utilized to operate the machine, 16x10 is the only
chute size that will be offered for the Small Anvil Option.
5. What strap can we use in the Small Anvil HBX?
Any strap that is approved for use in the standard HBX can be used with the Small Anvil Option.
6. Can I order compression on the HBX machine?
No, compression is not available for the 16x10 chute size.
7. My customer would like a fully automatic version HBX with the Small Anvil. When will this option be
available for the HBX-4330?
Unfortunately, there are no plans to introduce a fully automatic machine. However, the HBX-4300 can easily be
integrated into automatic packaging lines. By utilizing the optional Interlock Kit (P/N 438413), the HBX can
receive a strapping signal from your customer’s conveyor lines and can automatically place straps by receiving
a signal from your customer’s conveyor controls. Page 6
