transducermaybedamagedifittransmitsinopenair.Topreventinadvertentuseofthe

Forpurseseineapplications,thetransducerismountedontheportorstarboardsideof

Thetransducer’sprotectedposition
preventsdamagefromthepursewire,
andstillgivesyoufullcontrolwhile
settingandretrievingthenet.The
SN90allowsyoutorunalongside
aschoolofshandobserve,and

horizontalmountedechosounder,
butwithalotmoreaccuracy,
andwithdedicatedsoftwareand
presentationformats.Fishavoidance
isminimized,andmoreaccurate

correctsizeandestimatethevolume

UsingSN90ontrawlers
Trawlershaveformanyyearsreliedonhighresolutionechosounders-suchasthe
SimradES70-tondandestimatetheircatch.Thedisadvantagewithechosounders
isthefactthattheylookstraightdown.
TheSN90offersthehighresolution
ofanechosounder,butalsoa
largehorizontalrangethatallows
youtondsh-evenclosetothe
bottom-fromadistanceofseveral
hundredmeters.Thehighfrequency
bandwidthmakestheSN90idealfor
specieslikepollock,codandsaith.
Duringthesearchphase,aforward
lookingSN90isaveryefcient
toolforalltrawlers.Sincethe
transducerisplacedinthevessel’s
bow,theSN90willnotsufferfrom
theacousticnoisegeneratedbythe
hull,machineryandpropellers.
Thephysicalinstallationangleofthe
transducermustbedeterminedbased
onthedepthinthevessel’snormal
shingwaters.Evenwithaxedinstallationangle,theSN90willservewellinother
waterstooduetotheswathandtiltfunctionality.

TheSimradSN90isauniquesonar,bothindesignandfunctionality.
Thecompositetransducerandthetransceivereachuses256individualchannelsfor
transmissionandreception.Alargefrequencybandwidthissupported,astheSN90
allowsyoutochoosea0.1to40kHzbandwidthwithcentrefrequencyfrom70to120
kHzinstepsof1kHz.Thebandwidthcanbesetupindividuallyforeachsonarview.

verticalbeamwidthistypically
6°.Thebeamscanbetiltedwith
limitsdependingontheangleofthe
transducerinstallation.Inaddition
tothis,veadjustablesplit-beam
inspectionbeamsoftypically6x6°
canbeusedforamoredetailed
studyofaschool,suchasobserving
shbehaviour,targetstrengthand
biomass.
Theabsenceofahullunitallows
foreasierandlessspacedemanding
installation,andthetransduceris
eithermountedushwiththehull
plating,orinastreamlinedblister.
Thetransducerinstallationremoves
thechancetogettangledupor
damagedbywires,andgreatly
reducestheriskofbeingdamaged
byobjectsinthewater.
Note
TheSN90canbedeliveredwithahullunit.
TheSN90providesanumberofstandardinterfacelinesforcommunicationwith
peripheraldevicesandsensors.Typicalinputsaregeographicalinformationfroma
positioningsystem,vesselspeedandcurrentheading.Inordertooperatecorrectly,
theSN90requiresinputfromamotionreferenceunit(MRU).Withouttheinputfrom
amotionreferencesensor,theSN90willnotbeabletocompensateforthevessel
movements.ThislackofcompensationwillpreventtheSN90fromprovidingcorrect
echoinformation.KongsbergMaritimemayprovideasuitablemotionreferenceunit.
ThenarrowbeamsprovidedbytheSN90giveyouseveraladvantages.
•Theyincreasetherangeandresolution,andofferaverticalviewwithadditional
detailsandaclearerpicture.
•TheymaketheSN90evenmoreidealwhenyouneedtosearchforshclosetothe
seabottom,orclosetothesurface,atlongranges.
•Theyprovideafarbetterverticalviewwithless"bottomclimbing"thatwhatisseen
onsonarswithawiderbeam.
•Thenarrowbeamsalsodecreasethenoiselevel.

TheSN90offersthesameuserinterfaceandoperatingsoftwareasourothersonars,
echosoundersandcatchmonitoringsystems.Thisenableseasierandfastertraining
ofnewusers.
TheSN90echopresentationsareoptimizedformultipledisplays.Providedthatyou
haveconnectedadditionaldisplaystoyourProcessorUnit,youcanusetheDocking
Viewsfunctiontotakeanysonarviewandplaceitonaseparatedisplay.Whenyoumove
aviewtoanotherdisplay,itwillautomaticallybescaledforthebestpossibleresult.
Itiscommonforsonarstorequiremanypingstobuildthevariousviewsintheecho
presentation.Thesesonarsmayforexampleneedonepingtobuildthe360degreesomni
view,andthenseveraladditionalpingstofetchtheechoesfortheverticalviews.On
theSN90,allthesonarviewsinthepresentationarebuiltusingtheechoesfromone
singleping.Thisdramaticallyimprovestheupdaterateandprovidesbetterreal-time
information.
TheSN90permitsyoutorecordreal-timesonarsituations.Thisallowsyoutoreplay
completesequences.Theplaybackcontainstheexactsameechoinformation,andcanbe
usedformissionhistory,trainingortroubleshootingpurposes.
Greatemphasishasbeenplacedonanintuitiveuserinterfaceandthebestpossiblesonar
presentationsonahighresolutioncolourdisplay.
TheSN90isequippedwiththecelebratedsignalprocessingsoftwaredevelopedby
KongsbergMaritime.TheSN90offersseveralpulsetypes.ThisincludesHyperbolic
FM(HFM)transmissions.Thispulsetypeisalsoknownas"chirp".Itensuresaclutter
freepicturewithveryhighresolutioninrange.Thesignalprocessingandbeamforming
isperformedinafastdigitalsignalprocessingsystemusingthefulldynamicrange
ofthesignals.
