SIMRAD SX90
Simrad high denition sonars will provide a 360 degrees picture of the immediate surroundings
Simrad is a division of Kongsberg Maritime AS. For more than sixty years, Simrad has developed and
manufactured professional sonar systems for the world’s most sophisticated shing vessels. Our sonar systems are
also extensively used by several nation’s coast guards and naval patrol vessels.
The Simrad SX90 is an “off the
shelf” commercial sonar. Due to the
low price and short delivery time, the
SX90 sonar has quickly become an
alternative to high cost naval sonars.
The SX90 comes with a choice of
three different hull units capable
of handling vessel speeds up to 24
knots, or it may be supplied for xed
installation in a streamlined dome.
The compact hull unit and
transceiver requires a minimum of
space in the sonar room, and can
be adapted to most existing sonar
installation trunks.
The installation is simple, and
may be done in a matter of hours.
The hull unit and transceiver are
installed in the sonar room, while the
operating panel and the processor
unit are installed in the operation
room. A commercial display can be
used. The only required interfaces
for the sonar are information from
GPS and Gyro. Speed log and motion
reference (MRU) inputs are optional.
The sonar’s internal clock can be
synchronized from the GPS.
The SX90 is designed for
operation in shallow waters where
This screen capture shows the sonar echoes using a reector target
with TS=-15 dB at 20 meters depth, bottom at 140 meters
Wreck detection at 4500 meters: This screen
capture shows a long range detection of a sunken
35.000 ton cargo vessel. You can see it at 10° port side,
it is marked with target tracking triangle. The wreck
lays at about 100 meters depth. The other echoes are
shallow banks in the area. The sonar is operated at
23 kHz using “FM Auto” and “Narrow Beam”. The
position of the vessel and time and date is indicated in
the lower right hand corner of the presentation.
sonar conditions are difcult due to
temperature layers, bottom or other
conditions.
Typical applications include:
• Coastal patrol
• Anti submarine warfare
• Navigation and obstacle avoidance
• Diver monitoring
• Underwater ROV and AUV
positioning
• Submarine rescue
• Iceberg detection
• Whale detection
Bow up/180° vertical
The vertical slice is made “tippable”, and
by selecting a 60° tip angle (or less), a
full 180° coverage is obtained. The tip
angle can be adjusted from +10 to -90°.
This mode is ideal when you are trawling
for sh on deep water.
SIMRAD SX90
Long experience
Kongsberg Maritime have worked
with naval sonar applications for more
than 40 years
The SX90 ts the requirements
for advanced, compact, ship mounted
sonar systems for use in Surveillance,
ASW and other support roles in
shallow or deep waters.
Our modern sonar technology
provides features and functions
required for both small and large ship
installations.
Long range
The Simrad SX90 sonar is
specially designed for vessels where
range is criteria No.1. The SX90 sonar
offers equally short and long-range
performance important to all sonar
operators.
The transducer element is designed
for maximum performance from 20
kHz to 30 kHz and each of the 256
elements is connected to its own
transmitter and receiver. You can
choose from three different vertical
beam widths, single or dual vertical
view and 180° tiltable vertical view.
Advanced wide band transducer
design combined with digital
transmitting and receiver technology
make this possible. As the only
commercial omni directional sonar in
the market, Simrad use transceivers
Horizontal and vertical beams
The combination of vertical and
horizontal presentations show you the
targets both from above and from the
side at the same time. It is not necessary
to go over the target to see the vertical
distribution on the echo sounder.
Beam stabilization
When the beam stabilizer is activated,
both the horizontal and vertical beams are
electronically stabilized for roll and pitch.
The full circle beam stays on the target
independent of the vessel movement,
even in rough seas.
with hyperbolic FM technology for
improved resolution and ltering
away unwanted reverberation
(unwanted disturbance echoes) from
surface and bottom making the real
echoes easier to detect under difcult
conditions.
The Simrad SX90 sonar offers
unique features such as full circle
Key features
• Multi frequency operation with 11 different operation frequencies
• Vertical Modes
• Dual Modes
• Omni directional mode provides instantaneous detection, and tracking of
targets 360° around the vessel in 64 beams
• Single beam mode for operation in enclosed waters
• Narrow vertical and horizontal beams for shallow water operation
• Short and long range operation with hyperbolic FM operation and high
resolution
• Compact hull unit and transceiver unit for quick installation on new or
old vessels
• Sealed transceiver unit with heat exchanger for best reliability
• Electronic stabilization for improved detection of small mid water
targets or for wreck detection
• Automatic or manual target tracking, position tracking,
• Information of own ship’s track, target movement, range, depth, bearing,
speed and heading for up to three different targets.
• Zoom
• Data output to external equipment of target information: position, range
and bearing to target, target speed and heading.
• CW and hyperbolic FM operation
• Context sensitive on-line help
• Full set of user and technical documentation provided
beam stabilization for easier detection
in poor weather. The SX90 sonar
