passingoverit.Thisislikeusingahorizontalmountedechosounder,butwithalot
moreaccuracy,andwithdedicatedsoftwareandpresentationformats.Fishavoidanceis

Youcandetectunwantedspecies,catchthecorrectsizeandestimatethevolumeof
theschoolbeforesettingthenet.
Inpurseseineoperations,thelargefrequencybandwidthmakestheSN90idealforboth
mackerelandtuna,andevenforherring.
UsingSN90ontrawlers
Trawlershaveformanyyearsreliedonhighresolutionechosounders-suchasthe
SimradES70-tondandestimatetheircatch.Thedisadvantagewithechosounders
isthefactthattheylookstraightdown.
TheSN90offersthehighresolutionofanechosounder,butalsoalargehorizontal
rangethatallowsyoutondsh-evenclosetothebottom-fromadistanceofseveral
hundredmeters.ThehighfrequencybandwidthmakestheSN90idealforspecieslike
pollock,codandsaith.
Duringthesearchphase,aforwardlookingSN90isaveryefcienttoolforalltrawlers.
Sincethetransducerisplacedinthevessel’sbow,theSN90willnotsufferfromthe
acousticnoisegeneratedbythehull,machineryandpropellers.
Thephysicalinstallationangleofthetransducermustbedeterminedbasedonthedepth
inthevessel’snormalshingwaters.Evenwithaxedinstallationangle,theSN90will
servewellinotherwaterstooduetotheswathandtiltfunctionality.
Specicationsandfunctionality
TheSimradSN90isauniquesonar,bothindesignandfunctionality.
Thecompositetransducerandthetransceivereachuses256individualchannelsfor
transmissionandreception.Alargefrequencybandwidthissupported,astheSN90
allowsyoutochoosea0.1to40kHzbandwidthwithcentrefrequencyfrom70to120
kHzinstepsof1kHz.Thebandwidthcanbesetupindividuallyforeachsonarview.

verticalbeamwidthistypically
6°.Thebeamscanbetiltedwith
limitsdependingontheangleofthe

canbeusedforamoredetailed
studyofaschool,suchasobserving
shbehaviour,targetstrengthand
biomass.
Theabsenceofahullunitallows
foreasierandlessspacedemanding
installation,andthetransduceris
eithermountedushwiththehull
plating,orinastreamlinedblister.
Thetransducerinstallationremoves
thechancetogettangledupor
damagedbywires,andgreatly
reducestheriskofbeingdamaged
