1. Safety instructions /2. Delivery and storage
1. Safety instructions
To convert the piston detector, consult the
documentation for the metering device
(lifecycle manual, assembly instructions) in
which the previous piston detector is used.
The safety instructions in that documenta-
tion must be observed in full.
Further:
○The operator must ensure that these
conversion instructions and the corre-
sponding metering device documentation
have been read by the person who con-
verts the piston detector or supervises or
instructs said person.
○Depressurize the affected metering de-
vice before disassembling the defective
piston detector.
○The operator must also ensure that the
staff fully understands the content of the
instructions.
2. Scope of delivery/storage
The conversion kit for the piston detectors
includes a metering-device-specific adapter.
The piston detectors may be used only with
this adapter.
A stopper and a cable adapter are also en-
closed for the metering device version.
The scope of delivery also includes these
conversion instructions.
2.1 Storage
Storage conditions- See metering device
documentation and:
○Store in the original product packaging.
○Store protected from nearby sources of
heat or cold.
○The permissible storage temperature
range corresponds to the operating tem-
perature range (see "Technical data").
○Putting the products into operation or
operating them without having read the
instructions is prohibited.

951-150-037-EN
Version 01
EN 3. Overview, functional description
In cases of other piston detectors, with
and without adapter, the metering device
must first be depressurized. If an adapter is
already mounted, then it must be replaced
with the new adapter (see Figure 1).
Problems cannot occur in the stopper pres-
sure range of the sensor surface/meter-
ing device if using piston detectors with
adapters.
3.5 System design of metering device
adapter and piston detector
The piston detector 2340-00000026 is a
position sensor that, together with a pres-
sure-resistant adapter, is screwed into the
respective metering device.
Through the closed adapter, the sensor
detects the metering device piston without
coming into direct contact with it.
Hydraulic pressure spikes therefore do not
act directly on the front sensor surface of
the piston detector.
There are different adapters depending on
the metering device series. These differ in
terms of thread size and clearance. Another
feature is the wall thickness resulting from
the fixed nominal distance between the
metering device piston and the active sensor
surface.
If a piston detector of series
2340-00000026 is already installed, the
piston detector can be replaced subsequent-
ly during operation. However, the adapter
must not be removed while removing the
existing piston detector!
3.5.1 Function
Piston detector 2340-00000026 is de-
signed as a circuit closer (normally open
contact).
When the piston detector is actuated (piston
stroke), it closes and sends its output signal
(+) to the outlet (2/4). The signal lasts as
long as the piston detector is actuated by the
metering device piston.
At the same time as actuation, a yellow LED
lights up and indicates correct functioning of
the piston detector.
The piston detector automatically detects
the customer’s plug/cable assignment,
2-wire design or 3-wire design (with cable
break protection). The possibility of a wiring
error is thus excluded.
The piston detector, with the corresponding
adapter, is intended as a replacement for all
previous detectors.

3. Overview, functional description
3.6 Field of application of the non-adjustable piston detector
Piston detector 2340-00000026 is de-
signed for immunity up to 0.2 mT. Sources
of interference beyond this level can be in-
creased to an immunity up to 0.7 mT using
an additional installed shielding sleeve
(see Fig. 1).
Due to the massive shielding of magnetic
sources of interference, this piston detector
is available only with a non-adjustable sens-
ing distance.
To prevent magnetic transmission from
the customer's magnetic component to the
metering device, SKF recommends install-
ing galvanic isolation, such as a plastic or
ceramic plate. Ensure that the fixing screws
are not magnetically conductive (stainless
steel screws without iron content).
The piston detector 2340-00000026 is
intended for use wherever customer's mag-
netic interference fields negatively affect a
conventional piston detector.
External magnetic fields can result in ex-
treme increase or reduction of the sensing
distance of a conventional piston detector,
causing the piston detector to no longer
provide a constant switching signal or no
longer reach its switching point.
Magnetic fields can be created by, among
other things, hardening processes, inad-
equately shielded servo motors, frequency
converters, magnetic filters, etc. on parts
mounted by the customer.
Measurements by SKF have shown that in-
terference fields with a strength of 0.1 to
3 mT can form.

detector.
• Loosen and unscrew the defective piston
detector (3) from the metering device (4).
• Remove the old packing ring (5) from the
metering device (4).
5.2 Assembly of the new piston detector
• Apply grease to the new packing ring (6)
and place it on the new adapter (7).
• Apply the adapter (7) to the metering
device (4) and tighten with the following
torque:
Tightening torque Adapter
SW 12 = 15+1 Nm
Apply new piston detector (8) to the adapter
(7) and tighten gently.
Avoid uncontrolled tightening of
the piston detector.:
This could cause damage.
Maintain tightening torque of
70.5 Nm.
• Tighten the piston detector (8) with a
torque of 70.5 Nm.
See Figures 1 and 7
• Depressurize the lubrication system and
metering device
• If possible, place a drip pan for the dis-
charging lubricant below the correspond-
ing metering device.
• Place individual parts of the new piston
detector replacement kit (1) on a clean
storage surface.
CAUTION
Pressure hazard
Before beginning conversion work,
depressurize the system in which
the metering device with the piston
detector to be replaced is installed
and depressurize the metering de-
vice itself.

• Execute several metering device strokes.
The yellow LED on the piston detector
lights up to indicate an active metering
device stroke. On the subsequent metering
device strokes, the signal from the piston
detector must be received by the customer’s
monitoring equipment.
• Check the piston detector signal (yellow
LED lights up).
• Check for correct lubrication volume at
the lubrication points.
See Figure 6
5.3 Conducting initial functional test
For kit version with shielding sleeve
• During the following installation of
the shielding sleeve, make sure that it is
not damaged by the thread of the piston
detector.
• Slip the shielding sleeve (9) over the pis-
ton detector (8) until it fits firmly on the
front of the metering device.
• Align the shielding sleeve (9) so that the
LED on the piston detector
is visible
(through shielding sleeve bore (10))
• Connect electrical connection cable
(provided by customer) (2) to the piston
detector (8).

If, after working through the fault causes (previous page), there is still a malfunction in the metering device signal (continuous
signal or missing signal), proceed as follows:
Malfunction Possible cause Remedy
Continuous signal
○Positive magnetic field that is present beyond the
permissible immunity margin
without shielding sleeve > 0.2 mT
with shielding sleeve 0.7 mT
Requirements:
The metering device must be functioning correctly, and the piston
detector must be connected correctly.
• Check for any excessive magnetic fields in the assembly area of the
metering device. Proceed as follows:
• Remove the metering device with piston detector from the in-
stallation location and carry out a functional test of the piston
detector installed in the metering device.
• If the fault (continuous signal or missing signal) no longer occurs,
suitable measures should be taken to prevent the excessive magnetic
field. Contact SKF Service for assistance.
• If the fault (missing change of signal) continues to occur, return the
entire metering device to SKF Service/your dealer - see the manufac-
turer's address on page 3).
Missing signal ○Negative magnetic field beyond the permissible im-
munity margin (less than < -0.7 mT)
