Overview

Overview
The BC-L120 Battery Charger can be used to simultaneously
charge up to four BP-L40A/L60A/L90A Lithium-ion Battery
Packs, or to supply DC power to an external device.
Features
Simultaneous connection of up to four battery packs
The BC-L120 can connect and charge up to four battery packs
at the same time. These battery packs may be either the BP-
L40A, the BP-L60A, the BP-L90A, or any mix of the three.
Quick charging
The BC-L120 features a new system that charges up to four
battery packs quickly and efficiently.
For details, see “Charging system” on page 3(EN).
Compact and lightweight
The BC-L120 is compact, lightweight, and easy to carry.
Diagnostics function
The BC-L120 checks each connected battery pack for
abnormalities. An indicator flashes red for any battery pack
that cannot be charged normally.
Charging progress indicators
Indicators light up to show three different charging levels: less
than 80% capacity, 80% capacity, and greater than 80%
capacity.
Skip function for fully charged batteries
If a fully charged battery pack is attached to the BC-L120,
nothing happens to the battery pack and the indicators show the
charging of the pack is complete.
Supply of up to 100 W of DC power
The BC-L120 can supply up to 100 watts of DC power to an
external device connected through an optional DC connecting
cable.

3(EN)
Cooling fan
An internal cooling fan turns on whenever the BC-L120 is
charging a battery pack or supplying power to an external
device.
• This unit is designed for charging Sony lithium-ion battery
packs (BP-L40A/L60A/L90A).
• The DC-L1 (NP-1B adaptor) and DC-L90 (BP-90A
adaptor) cannot be used to charge nickel-cadmium battery
packs.
Charging system
The BC-L120 uses a new system that first charges each
connected battery pack to 80% capacity, in sequence. It then
simultaneously charges all battery packs to 100% capacity. In
this way, it achieves more efficient and faster charging than
conventional systems in which each battery is charged to 100%
capacity before the next battery is charged. Details about the
new system and the charging times are given below.

After the BC-L120 has charged one battery pack to 80%
capacity, it moves on to the next battery pack. When the last
battery pack is 80% charged, the BC-L120 begins
simultaneously charging all battery packs until they reach
100% capacity. In this way, battery packs are charged more
quickly than in previous systems.

5(EN)
Precautions
On the battery charger
• Use the BC-L120 in an operating environment of 0°C to 40°C
(32°F to 104°F). Since charging is difficult at low
temperatures, we recommend that battery packs be charged
between 20°C and 30°C (68°F and 86°F).
• Avoid using or storing the BC-L120 in dusty places or places
with corrosive gases.
• Avoid using or storing the BC-L120 in places exposed to
direct sunlight.
• Do not cover the ventilation holes.
On battery packs
• Even when fully charged, battery packs gradually lose their
charge naturally. Use the battery packs as soon as possible
after charging.
• Carry and store battery packs by installing them in your
equipment or by repacking them using the original packing
material.
• To prolong the life of battery packs, store them in a cool place
(about 20°C (68°F)), and charge in a place with an ambient
temperature between 10°C and 30°C (50°F and 86°F).
• When temperatures are 10°C (50°F) or lower, the
performance of a battery pack suffers and the usable time of a
battery pack becomes shorter. To get the longest usable time,
warm the battery packs to room temperature (about 20°C
(68°F)) before use.
• Carrying a spare battery pack is recommended.
Lithium-ion battery packs are free from memory effect.
There is no need to discharge them fully before recharging.
If the usable time of a battery pack becomes very short, it is
time to replace it with a new one.
