PREFACE
We have tried to provide you with the best instrument we can.
In doing this we sometimes make changes in our products after the
instruction manuals have been printed. Many changes are made to
give you the benefit of the latest circuit improvements devloped in
our engineering department, and to accomodate improved com
ponents as they become available. ur Test and Calibration En
gineers sometimes hand tailor the circuits to provide optimun in
dividual performance.
When a particular instrument is changed in any manner, its
manual is corrected accordingly. That is why the instrument serial
number is written on the title page of this manual. If you need
repair parts for an instrument, refer to the manual that belongs to
that particular instrument.
This manual begins with a list of Specifications, so that you will
know the characteristics of your instrument. The second section
provides information on cooling and connecting the power trans
former for various input voltages. The third section gives you some
of the principle ways in which you can operate your instrument.
Next is the Circuit Description, where the circuitry of your instru
ment is described in a detailed form. The Maintenance and Recali
bration sections are last. Here you will find information on trouble
shooting and repairing your instrument and on carrying out a re
calibration of the instrument, if necessary, in the field.
We hope that you will find your instruction manual useful. Refer
to it often. We welcome comments.

SPECIFICATIONS
The Tektronix Type 502 O cillo cope provide linear dual-beam
di play with a wide range of weep rate combined with high in
put en itivity. In addition, the Type 502 may be u ed to provide
dual-beam X-Y di play at medium en itivitie , and ingle-beam
X-Y di play at high en itivitie . Vertical amplifier for both
beam may be operated with ingle-ended input for conventional
operation, or with differential input for cancellation of common
mode ignal . The wide range of operational mode available,
make the Type 502 adaptable to a great many indu trial and
cientific application .

Differential input rejection ratio
The rejection ratio pecified below apply if
the ignal voltage at the Input connector
doe not exceed pecified limit . The ignal
limit for dc-coupling are ± 2 volt with re pect
to ground for etting of the SENSITIVITY con
trol from 200/Av/cm to .2v/cm, =±=20 volt
with re pect to ground for etting from
.5v/cm to 2v/cm, and ±2 0 0 volt with re
pect to ground for etting from 5v/cm to 20
v/cm. For ac coupling, the ignal limit are 2
volt peak-to-peak from 200/xv/cm to .2 v/cm,
20 volt peak-to-peak from .5 v/cm to 2 v/cm,
and 200 volt peak-to-peak from 5 v/cm to 20
v/cm. From 200/xv/cm to 1 mv/cm, the rejec
tion ratio i approximately 1000-to-l, decrea 
ing to 100-to-1 at 0.2 v/cm, and to 25-to-1 in
the range from .5 v/cm to 20 v/cm.
HORIZONTAL-DEFLECTION SYSTEM
Sweep rate
Twenty-one calibrated weep rate from 1
/A ec/cm to 5 ec/cm. Accuracy typically with
in 1% of full cale; in all ca e , within 3% of
full cale.
Magnifier
Expand weep 2, 5, 10, or 20 time . Calibra
tion of magnified weep rate accurate within
3% for weep peed which do not exceed
the maximum calibrated rate of 1 [xsec/cm.
Unblanking
