WARRANTY
Tektronix warrantsthat this product will be free from defects in materials and
workmanshipfor a period of one (1) year from the date of shipment. If any such
product proves defective during this warranty period, Tektronix, at its option,
either will repair the defective product without charge for parts and labor, or will
provide a replacement in exchange for the defective product.
In orderto obtain serviceunder this warranty, Customer must notify Tektronix of
the defect before the expiration of the warranty period and make suitable
arrangementsforthe performance of service. Customer shallbe responsiblefor
packaging and shipping the defective product to the servicecenter designatedby
Tektronix,with shipping charges prepaid. Tektronix shall pay for the return of
the product to Customer if the shipment is to a location within the country in
which Tektronix servicecenter is located. Customer shallbe responsible for
paying all shippingcharges, duties, taxes, and any other charges for products
returned to any other locations.
This warranty shall not apply to any defect, failure or damage caused by improper
use or improperor inadequate maintenance and care. Tektronix shall not be
obligatedto furnish service under warranty a) to repair damage resulting from
attemptsby personnelother than Tektronix representatives to install,repair or
servicethe product; b) to repair damage resulting from improper user or
connection to incompatibleequipment; or c) to service a product that has been

AC Power
The instrumentis designed to be powered from 90-125 or 220-240 VAC; 300 VA
max. Voltage switchingisautomatic.There is no voltage switch.
Groundthe Instrument
The PB200 is grounded through its AC power cord. Plug this power cord only into
a properly grounded,three-conductor outlet. If you operate the instrument without
a proper ground,then should there
be a fault in the instrument, there is a potential
that all metal surfaceson the instrumentcan become a potential shockhazard.
Do Not Operate in an ExplosiveAtmosphere
The PB200 does not provide protection from static discharges or arcing
components and therefore must not be operated in an explosive atmosphere.
Usethe Proper Fuse
Operatingthe instrument with an improperfuse creates a fire hazard. The correct
fuses to install in the PB200 are shown below:

Do Not Remove InstrumentCovers
Toavoid a shock hazard and to maintain proper air flow, never operate the
PB200 with any of its outside covers removed. There is a plastic front cover that
protects the front panel while the test equipment is not in use. This plastic cover
must be removed in order to access the controls on the front panel of the PB200.

How This Manual is Organized
This manual is divided into four sections: Getting Started, Operating Basics,

Getting Started
provides an overview of the PB200 and describes first time
operation.
OperatingBasics describes the hardware controls, indicators, connectors, and
display elements forTx,
Rx and the cablingrequired.
Reference describes the LCD Menus and Screens.It also provides a representative

Product Description
Overview
The PB200 is a versatile general purpose bit error rate tester (BERT). It contains
both a generator (Tx) and analyzer (Rx) in one portable instrument, and operates
at bit rates from DC up to 200 Mbls. It can function as a fully-featured non-
packetized BERT (like the GB700 and GB1400)by generatingand analyzing
continuous PRBS, Mark Density, or fixed word patterns.
As a general purpose BERT, the PB200 is has several important features:
1. Data and clock outputs are programmable for both output amplitude and
offset. This simplifies interfacingwith a wide variety of logic levels including
ECL, PECL, and
TTL;
2. Input and output data edges can be delayed with 20 pS time resolution. This
provides increased capabilities to de-skew signalsin Automatic Test
Equipment (ATE) systems,align data forBER measurements,and
characterize setup and hold timing specifications;
3. Auto Search Synchronization to locate the best clock and data thresholds,
delay timing, data polarity, and PRBS pattern type up to 215-1.
The PB200 is also bit error rate tester with unique features not found in traditional
BERTs. Programmable word memories, up to 256 Kbits in length, allow the
construction of a packet or cell than can consist of user-definablepreamble,
overhead and data.
Data communications has historicallyused data groups, such as the type of data
structures specified in the RS-232 standard. In RS-232 transmissions, ASCII
characters are embedded in data groups of 10or 11bits. They are arriving at a
known data rate but are separatedfrom each other in time. Today's packet
structuresare much longer and more complex, in many cases consistingof data
groups thousands of bits long. The PB200 is able to generateand process defined
time gaps between data packets (known as clock gap orburst operation), and
mask off bits which have been programmed as "header", "framing" or"preamble"
bits from the error calculation.
The combination of flexible pattern generation, pattern analysis,and clock
gapping features make the PB200 extremely versatile. It can be adapted to a
variety of standard applications and is particularly suited for environmentswhere
data structuresare packetized. The latter capability enables the PB200 to
generate and analyze formatted
NRZ data such as TDMA, ATM cells, MPEG2
streams, basic Fibre Channel data frames, and Ethernet packet data. The PB200
is not able to replace a protocol analyzer in these environments,but can go a long
way in testingdigital transmission error rates in these applications.
The PB200 is focused on the research, design, and manufacturingof
telecommunicationcomponents, modules, orlinks operating at data rates to
200MbIs.
