SPRINKLER GUARD & GUARD WITH SHIELD
FOR USE WITH MODEL A SPRINKLERS
MODELS F938 & F938/Q-76
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Model F938 Sprinkler Guard (Ref.
Figure A-1) is designed for use with
Model A Sprinklers that may be lo-
cated in an area that makes them sus-
ceptible to being accidentally struck.
Table A provides the specific types of
Model A Sprinklers with which the
F938 is compatible.
The ModelF938/Q-76 Sprinkler Guard
with Shield (Ref. Figure A-2), in addi-
tion to providing protection from physi-
cal damage, shields the sprinkler from
water spray of higher elevation sprin-
klers (e.g., rack storage sprinkler in-
stallations). When the F938/Q-76 is
used with the Model A Sprinklers
shown in Table A, the assemblies form
Upright Intermediate Level Sprinklers
intended for use in fire sprinkler sys-
tems designed in accordance with the
standard installation rules recognized
by the applicable Listing agency (i.e.,
UL Listing is based on NFPA require-
ments).
APPROVALS AND STANDARDS
The Model F938 Sprinkler Guard and
ModelF938/Q-76SprinklerGuardwith
Shield are listed by Underwriters
Laboratories Inc. (UL) and Underwrit-
ers’ Laboratories Inc. for use in Can-
ada (C-UL), as well as approved by
Factory Mutual Research Corporation
(FM), for use with the Model A Sprin-
klers shown in Table A.
WARNING

with Shield described herein must be
installed and maintained in compli-
ance with this document, as well as
with the applicable standards of the
National Fire Protection Association,
in addition to the standards of any
other authorities having jurisdiction.
Failure to do so may impair the integ-
rity of these devices.
The owner is responsible for main-
taining their fire protection system
and devices in proper operating con-
dition. The installing contractor or
manufacturer should be contacted
relative to any questions.
TECHNICAL DATA
The Model F938 Sprinkler Guard and
ModelF938/Q-76SprinklerGuardwith
Shield are available with either a
painted red or zinc chromate finish.
They are fabricated from low carbon
steel components. The eight Rods
comprising the guard and the Clips are
formed from 0.105 inch (2,7 mm) di-
ameter wire. The Rods are welded to
theguardattheBaseandTip.The
Q-76 Shield used with the F938/Q-76
is factory assembled to the F938
Guard with a zinc chromated steel
Screwwhichissecuredinpositionwith
an adhesive.
NOTE
In accordance with the requirements
of the NFPA, sprinkler guards shall
be listed. Guards are only listed for
use with specified sprinklers; there-

fore, the F938 and F938/Q-76 must
only be used with the Model A Sprin-
klers shown in Table A.
INSTALLATION
The Models F938 and F938/Q-76 are
to be installed as follows:
1. TheF938ortheF938/Q-76istobe
mounted on the sprinkler after the
sprinkler has been installed in ac-
cordance with its applicable techni-
cal data sheet.
2. With the Clips loose, first spread the
two halves of the Sprinkler Guard
just enough to pass by the sprinkler
deflector from the side. Then, once
again spread the two halves of the
Sprinkler Guard just enough to pass
over the sprinkler wrench flats onto
the thread relief portion of the sprin-
kler.
3. With the Sprinkler Guard positioned
on the thread relief portion of the
sprinkler, engage the Clips and then
slide the Clips until they seat against
the Base to complete the installa-
tion.
NOTE
The F938 and F938/Q-76 may be
located in any position relative to
the sprinkler frame arms.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
The Models F938 and F938/Q-76 do
not require any regularly scheduled
maintenance; however, proper instal-
lation of the Sprinkler Guards should
be verified during the annual visual
inspection of the sprinklers.
It is recommended that automatic
sprinkler systems be inspected quar-
terly by a qualified Inspection Service.
WARRANTY
Seller warrants for a period of one year
from the date of shipment (warranty
period) that the products furnished
hereunder will be free from defects in
material and workmanship.
