STAR SPRINKLER INC. ATYCO International Ltd. Company CD 1-3.1.10 • 6/97
RESIDENTIALQUASAR
MODEL Q
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
TheQuasarModelQistheworld'sonlyself-adjustingresi-
dential concealed sprinkler. The Quasar's unique patented
cover assembly not only provides a full 1/2" of adjustment,
but it is also the only concealed sprinkler cover assembly
which automatically moves with normal ceiling fluctuations.
The Quasar's cover assembly design virtually guarantees
thatthecoverwillnotonly stay onbutwillalsoremaintight to
the ceiling, eliminating unsightly gaps and shadows.
Quasar cover plates are available in a variety of finishes.
Custom decorator finishes are factory applied to match cus-
tomer supplied color samples for every decorating need.
Standard finishes are white painted or chrome plated.
ADeluxe finishes include black, polished brass, and brushed
zinc.
AnotherQuasartime and moneysavingfeature is thefac-
tory applied Star-Seal thread sealant, which eliminates the
need to apply pipe compound or tapes in the field. This fea-
ture, plus the 1/2" of adjustment which allows for pre-cut
drops, makes Quasar installation a snap.
It is quick and simple to remove Quasar covers, which
allowsfor easyremoval of ceiling tiles withoutshutting down
the sprinkler system. Quasar sprinklers also come with a
temporaryprotective cover.Thiscover protectsthe sprinkler
during construction, helps with installation, and can be used
for temporary fire protection.
OPERATION
Thesimpletwo-stepoperationoftheQuasarmakesitone
of the most dependable fire sprinklers available. The Resi-
dential Quasar sprinkler responds to fire much faster than
standard sprinklers to help reduce fire damage. The Quasar
cover plate is factory attached to the cover assembly with a
eutectic alloy. When a fire occurs, the alloy melts at a prede-
termined temperature and the cover plate falls away. After
the cover plate has fallen, the deflector drops and the sprin-
kler is exposed to the fire's heat. The Quick Response glass
bulb in the sprinkler reaches its operating temperature and
the fluid inside expands, forcing the bulb to shatter, which
activates the sprinkler. Upon activation, water is discharged
in a predesigned pattern to control or extinguish the fire.

INSTALLATION
Star Residential Quasar Sprinklers are designed for in-
stallation on wet pipe sprinkler systems. Design and instal-
lation of sprinkler systems using Star Sprinklers must be
donebyqualifiedindividualsknowledgeableaboutfiresprin-
kler systems. All installations using Star Sprinklers must be
done in accordance with the latest published Standards of
the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Sprinkler
spacing and water flow rates must be in accordance with
this data sheet.
The Quasar Sprinkler is installed either before or after the
ceiling is installed, using one of the two specially designed
Quasar Sprinkler wrenches. The Standard LD2, SG, and Q
Sprinkler Wrench (Part Number 1849) can be used when
the ceiling has not been installed or when the ceiling tiles
can be lifted out of the way. The easy-to-use Star Socket
Wrench (Part Number 2111) can be used either with or with-
out the ceiling installed. When tightening, do not exceed 20
lb-ft (27.1 N-m) of torque.
Star Quasar Sprinklers are shipped with factory applied
Star-Seal thread sealant. Star-Seal eliminates the need for
fieldappliedpipecompoundsortapes.Useofadditionalpipe
sealing materials may require more than 20 lb-ft (27.1 N-m)
which may damage the sprinkler.
The sprinkler must be installed in relation to the finished
ceiling, as shown in Figure 1. Temporary protective covers
are available for painting and plastering protection. Tempo-
rary fire protection is accomplished by removing the cap on
the Protective Cover (Part Number 2109).
After the ceiling is in place, remove the temporary protec-
tivecover(ifinstalled).ThentheQuasarcoverassemblysim-
ply slides up and over the sprinkler frame until it snaps into
place. It is then rotated clockwise and allowed to rise, self-
adjusting to the finished ceiling. The cover plate will be held
tight to the ceiling by the spring inside the cover assembly.
The Quasar's patented spring feature allows the cover plate
to move with vibrations and normal ceiling movement.
To remove the cover assembly, simply insert the Cover
Removing Tool (Part Number 2300) between the cover as-
sembly flange and the ceiling, and pull down on the tool
handle until the cover plate assembly snaps free from the
sprinkler. WARNING
DO NOT PRESS THE COVER PLATE PROJECTIONS
INTO THE CEILING.
MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE
Sprinkler inspections should be made on a regular basis
to detect possible damage or alteration. Residential sprin-
klers should be replaced after 20 years of service, or if they
are painted, corroded, or damaged in any way. A sprinkler
that has been actuated cannot be reassembled or reused.
Replacement must be made with a sprinkler of the same
size,type,K-factor,andtemperaturerating,anditmustmeet
flow and pressure requirements compatible with the system
hydraulicdesign.MaintenancemustcomplywithNFPAStan-
dards.
