TheCD‐1010usesopencommunicationsprotocolsforhighlyflexiblecontentpresentationand
playbackcontrol.SMIL‐compliancemeanspredictableresultsacrossmultipledevices,andSMIL’snon‐
proprietarynaturemeansthatyourinvestmentsareneverobsolete.
4.1.Introduction
UsingSMIL(pronounced“smile”),thelanguagecreatedbyW3Cformultimediacommunications,the
mediaplayerunderstandsthelanguage“spoken”byprofessionaltoolsfromcompaniessuchas
Adobe,Apple,Microsoft,andRealNetworks.Whatthismeansisquicker,easier,andbetter
integrationofyourplayersintoyourdigitalsignagenetworks,openingupavenuesofsoftware
controlsandrealizingthefullpotentialofyourplayerhardwaredowntheroad.
4.2.PlayingaSMILdemo
ThedemonstrationfilescanbefoundintheSoftwareandDocumentationCD.
Step1:PreparecontentsusingaPC
PrepareaformattedUSBdrive(usingthe“FAT32”filesystem
option).CopytheentiresampleSMILdirectorywithallitscontent
filesfromSoftwareandDocumentationCDtotheUSBdrive.Make
suretheSMILdirectoryshowsupintherootdirectoryoftheUSB
drive.
Step2:Uploadcontentstoplayer
PoweruptheCD‐1010.Bootingtakesabout90seconds.
Whentheorangebootindicatorlampgoesout,insert
USBdriveintotheUSBporttobeginupload.Allfiles
undertheSMILdirectorywillbecopiedtotheplayer
andthesamplecontentswillbegintoplay.

TheplayerfeatureslimitedPowerPointsupport,butnotFlashsupport.
WhilePCscanplaymanyformatswithvaryingdegreesofsuccess,RISC‐basedmediaplayersare
designedtoreliablyplayspecificvideoformats(Pleaseseespecfordetails).WhileMicrosoft
PowerPointnativefilescouldnotplaydirectlyonaRISC‐basedplayer,thefileisconvertedthrough
othersoftware(i.e.SignageManagerExpress)intoanimageformattobeplayedasanimage
slideshow.
Whywon’tsomemediafilesplaysmoothly?
Thevideodatabit‐ratemaybehigherthantherecommendedbitrate.
Thevideodatabit‐rateistheamountofvideooraudiodatausedpersecondtostoreorplaythe
contents,usuallyexpressedinMbps(mega‐bitspersecond).Videoencodedwithexcessivebit‐rates
willnotplaybacksmoothlyinthemediaplayer,likelyduetostoragei/obottlenecks.Youcan
tryrecompressingunplayablevideofilesatlowerbitratesusingthefreeandopensourceHandbrake
toolathttp://handbrake.fr/.Onceyouhavefoundtherightoutputsettingsforsizeandquality,save
theminHandbrakeprofilesforfutureuse.Thenyoucaneasilyrecompressanyunplayablefilesyou
encounterinthefuture.
Whywon’tsomemediafilesplayatall?
Despiteourbesteffortstoadheretovideoformatstandards,videocompressionintroducesmany
variables,andsometimesthevideosyouacquiremaynotbeplayableonallplayers.Inthiscase,you
shouldcheckyourcompressionsettings(bitrate,audiocodec,andotherparameters)andusea
compatiblesetting.
IfthefilescanplayonyourPCbutnotonyourplayer,youshouldrecompressthefiletoensure
playback.Forgreatestcompatibility,werecommendoutputtingtotheWMVformat(VC‐1codec,3
to5Mbpsbit‐rate).Youcanrecompressunplayablevideofileswithrecommendedfileformatsand
bitratesusingthefreeandopensourceHandbraketoolathttp://handbrake.fr/.Onceyouhave

foundtherightoutputsettingsforsizeandquality,savetheminHandbrakeprofilesforfutureuse.
Thenyoucaneasilyrecompressanyunplayablefilesyouencounterinthefuture.

Thereare2majoraspectratios(width‐to‐heightratios)forvideocontent,butmanykindsofdisplays.
Ifyouplay4:3videoona16:9display(orviceversa),acirclebecomesoval,andthepicturetakeson
asqueezedorstretchedlook.Toavoidthisdistortedlook,addingblackbarsareacommontechnique.
TheNetworkMediaPlayercanbeconfiguredtoautomaticallyaddblackbarsforcertaintypesof
displays.YoucansettheoutputresolutioninCD‐1010’sconfigurationmenutomatchthenative
resolutionofyourdisplay.
SomeJPEGimagescannotbeplayedinthemediaplayer.
ProgressiveJPEGarenotsupported.PleaseconverttobaselineJPEGformaximumcompatibility.
JPEGimagescanbeeitherof2types:baselineorprogressivecompression.BaselineJPEGoffers
greatestcompatibility,whileprogressiveJPEGsaresuitableforwebsiteimages.Progressiveimages
aredownloadedanddisplayed“progressively,”beingrenderedmoreclearlyasmoredataisreceived
overtheinternet.DeviceswithlocalstoragesuchastheCF/NetworkMediaPlayerareusually
incompatiblewiththelattertype.MakesuretosaveimagesasbaselineJPEGinyourphotoeditor,or
resavethemasbaselineJPEGsusingfreetoolssuchasPaint.net(http://www.paint.net/).
Doesthemediaplayersupportvideostreaming?
No,allmediafilesaredesignedtoplayfromlocalstorage(HDDorCFcard).
Duringcontentandschedulesync,contentsaretransferredtoplayer’slocalstoragebeforebeing
presentedonscreen.Thisensuresthebestpossiblepresentationandfluiddeliveryofyourvideo
message.Videostreamingraisesmanyplaybackqualityissuessuchasimagefreezing,blocking,or
blue‐screens,costingyouvaluable“airtime”andlosingyouraudience'sattention.
Themediaplayerisnotplaying.WhatshouldIdo?
Checktheplayer’smessagesonthedisplay(OSD,oronscreendisplay)forstatusinformation.
SinceRISC‐basedmediaplayerusuallylackinputdevicessuchaskeyboardormouselikePCs,
troubleshootingisusuallybasedonuser’sknowledgeandexperiencewiththespecificmediaplayer.
Firstchecktheonscreenmessageandstatsreports.Badplaylistandtimingissuesaretwomajor
causesofplaybackproblems.Todetermineiftheproblemiscausedbyabadplaylist,justdeletethe
playlistandrestartplayer.Theplayershouldloopthroughallmediafiles,indicatingafaultwiththe
playlist.
Iftheplaybackisscheduledtoplayatspecifictime,checktoseeifthedeviceissettotherighttime
zoneontheworldclock.Whennothingseemswrong,thetimezonesettingisoftenthereasonthe
programisnotplayed.

IfyouareusingSignageManagerExpresstomanageexistingmediaplayers,youmaybepromptedto
upgradethefirmwaretoensuretoenablethelatestschedulingfeatures.Currentversionsofthe
firmwareupdatefilesareincludedontheSignageManagerExpressCD,whilefutureupgradesmaybe
obtainedfromyourreseller.
7.1. FirmwareupgradeusingSignageManagerExpress
1. Click“Firmwareupdate”toenterthefirmwareupdatepage
2. Selectyourplayermodel.Ifthemodelisnotshown,thenchooseanotherapplicableupgrademethodto
proceed.
3. Selectanupgrademethod:Network,USB,orCFcard(notallmethodsareapplicabletoallmodels).
Youcanalsomanuallyselectthelocationofafirmwareobtainedfromyourreseller.
4. IfyouselectedUSBorCFcardupgrade,youwillneedtospecifythedestinationpathofthedriveorcard.
Ifyouhavesetapasswordfortheplayer,enteritinthePasswordfield.Relatedinstructionswillbe
displayedonthispagetohelpyoucompletetheupgrade
process.
5. Finally,clickontheUpdatedevice,PrepareCFcard,orPrepareUSBdrivebuttontobegintransferof
firmware.Ifthefirmwaresourcefilecannotbefound,youwillbeaskedtolocatethefirmwaremanually.
ThefirmwareshouldbeavailableonyourSignageManagerExpressCDorviayourreseller.

HowtheViewsonicStandardLimitedWarrantyworks:
ViewSonicCorporation(“ViewSonic”)warrantsitsproductstobefreefromdefectsinmaterialandworkmanshipduringaspecifiedlengthoftime,or
“WarrantyPeriod”,asindicatedbelow.IfaproductprovestobedefectiveinmaterialorworkmanshipduringtheWarrantyPeriod,ViewSonicwill,atits
soleoption,repairorreplacetheproductwithasimilarproduct.Replacementproductsorpartsmayincluderemanufacturedorrefurbishedpartsor
components.Thereplacementproductwillbecoveredbythebalanceofthetimeremainingonthecustomer'soriginalViewSonicLimitedWarranty.
Thiswarrantydoesnotcoveranysoftwareincludedwiththeproduct.
ViewSonicproductsaremanufacturedusingnewmaterialsornewandusedmaterialsequivalenttonewinperformanceandreliability.Spareparts
maybeneworequivalenttonew.SparepartsarewarrantedtobefreefromdefectsinmaterialorworkmanshipfortheremainderoftheLimited
WarrantyPeriodunderproperand/ornormaluseoftheViewSonicProductinwhichtheyareinstalled.
DuringtheLimitedWarrantyPeriod,ViewSonicwill,atitssolediscretion,repairorreplacethedefectivecomponentpartsortheViewSonic
product.AllcomponentpartsorhardwareproductsremovedunderthisLimitedWarrantybecomethepropertyofViewSonic.Intheunlikelyevent
thatyourViewSonicProducthasarecurringfailure,ViewSonicwill,atitssolediscretion,provideyouwithareplacementunitofViewSonic's
choosingthatissimilarorequivalenttoyourViewSonicoriginallypurchasedproductinhardwareand/orperformance.
Howlongthewarrantyiseffective:

TheWarrantyPeriodwillbeginonthedateofpurchase,andremaineffectiveasspecifiedabove.Proofofpurchaseand/orreceiptwillberequiredfor
allclaimspurposes.
ExclusionsofWarranty:
Thefollowingwillimmediatelyandautomaticallyrenderanyandallwarrantiesand/orguarantees,includingbutnotlimitedtotheViewSonic
LimitedWarranty,asvoid:
1. Anyproductonwhichtheserialnumberhasbeendefaced,modifiedorremoved.
2. Accident,misuse,neglect,fire,water,lightning,orotheractsofnature,unauthorizedproductmodification,and/orfailuretofollow
instructionsasprescribedbyViewSonic.
3. RepairorattemptedrepairbysomeoneotherthanaViewSonicLicensedTechnician.
4. Anydamageresultingfromshipmentsnotmadeand/orinsuredbyViewSonic,and/orshipmentsmadebyViewSonicforwhichrecipient
failedtonotifyViewSonicofthedamageclaimwithin48hoursuponreceipt.
5. Removaland/orinstallationofanycomponentsnotintendedorprescribedbyViewSonic.
6. Causesexternaltotheproduct,suchaselectricpowerfluctuationsand/orfailure.
7. Normalwearandtear.
8. Damageto,orabuseof,thecoatingonthesurfaceofthedisplay,includingbutnotlimitedtocosmeticdefectsthatdonotaffect
functionality.
9. Anyothercausewhichisnotrelatedtoamanufacturer’sdefect.
10. Lossof,ordamageto,thecoveredproductduetomishandling,improperpackagingbyyou,alteration,accident,electricalcurrent
fluctuationsorfailuretofollowoperating,maintenanceorenvironmentalinstructionsprescribedinthecoveredproduct'sUserManual.In
theeventthatViewSonicdetermines,initssolediscretion,thatthereturnproductisdamagedduetooneormoreoftheseexcludedcauses,
thecustomerwillbebilledforthecostofrepairs.
