GENERAL DESCRIPTION
1.0
The Z3-AM572x-RPS is a compact OEM rapid production starter kit supporting H.264 encode and decode in
resolutions up to 1080p at 60 fps and HEVC (H.265) decode up to 720p at 30 fps. The hardware consists of
one Z3-AM572x-MOD-xx System on Module card with one Z3-AM572x-APP-01 application board. The software
consists of Linux kernel and application packages to allow users to develop their own advanced multimedia,
graphics and DSP applications.
The Z3-AM572x-MOD-xx is a compact OEM module which supports H.264 High Profile encode and decode at
up to 1080p60 and HEVC (H.265) decode up to 720p30. It features a unique expansion interface comprised
of four high density connectors providing access to most of the interface signals available from the SitaraTM
AM572x processor. The module is available with or without a heatsink or fan for thermal management.

The Z3-AM572x-APP-01 is an application board design for rapid prototyping of the Z3-AM572x-MOD-xx and is
included in the Z3-AM572x-RPS. This application board uses the I/O expansion capability of the module to
implement additional functions not present in the module itself. This application board has one HDMI input
and one HDMI output as well as ports for Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, Micro SD, SATA2, Mini-PCIe
Card and RS-232 serial.
The Z3-AM572x-RPS software is based on the Linux OS. The kit comes with all of the low-level resources such
as the Linux kernel, u-boot, tool chain and starter file system pre-integrated and configured. The software
bundle also contains tools to allow the development of high-level applications using hardware-accelerated
video processing, DSP, and graphics. Those customers that license the optional source code package can also
receive source code for Z3’s demonstration applications, providing an ideal starting point for custom
applications.

QUICK START GUIDE2.0
2.1 If You Have Received a System from Z3 with the Software Preloaded
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section 7.0, “RUNNING THE ENCODER,” on
page 13. This section describes how to quickly stream RTP from the RPS.
2.2 If You Already Have a System from Z3 and Need to Update the Firmware
There are several options for updating the firmware on your RPS by following the instructions in Section
9.0: “RUNNING THE CODE YOU BUILT ON THE BOARD”, on page 18.
2.3 If You are Ready to Start Development
Details on how to untar and build the code can be found in Section 5.0: “ UNTARRING AND BUILDING
THE SAMPLE CODE,” on page 10. A brief overview of the code itself can be found in Section 6.0: “CODE
OVERVIEW,” on page 11.
Details on how to set up your system to access the code you have built can be found in Section 9.0:

UNTARRING AND BUILDING THE SAMPLE CODE5.0
5.1 Preparing the Linux Environment
System Requirements: Ubuntu 14.04 64-bit
Prior to building the Z3 sample code, certain modules are required.
To install the required packages, run this command:
bin/setup-package-install.sh
5.2 Making the Directories and Running the Make Script
The software provided will allow you to re-create the pre-installed software of the single board encoder
starting from the included source code.
On a PC running Linux, create a directory where the released materials are going to be located:
# mkdir /home/z3/ z3-am57xx
Copy the released tar archive to that directory:
# cp SW-AP1-00631-01_AM5728-RPS-20160512.tar.bz2 /home/z3/z3-am57xx
Untar the archive:
# tar -xvjf SW-AP1-00631-01_AM5728-RPS-20160512.tar.bz2
*Note: Untarring could take 5 to 10 minutes.
Then go into the directory just created and run the build script (directory name may slightly vary):
# cd z3-am57xx-20160512
# ./makeall
*Note: Building can take around 30-40 minutes. You will also need to type in the sudo password a few
times towards the end of the build.
The outcome of the build process should be newly created image files in the images directory. You can
confirm this by doing the following:
# cd images
# ls -alt

The Z3-AM572x-RPS source code is based on Processor SDK 2.00.01.47. Z3 has modified the board-support
(U-Boot and Linux) to support Z3 hardware. The z3 directory contains software packages developed by Z3
Technology, LLC. The z3 directory is described in more detail in the next section.
6.1 The z3 Directory
There are 3 main subdirectories: matrix_gui, adv7611, and edid
6.1.1 matrix_gui
This directory contains the code for adding applications to the Matrix Launcher GUI on the HDMI
output.
6.1.2 adv7611
This directory contains initialization scripts for the HDMI input device driver.
6.1.3 edid
This directory contains the base code for rtp tx and rx, as well as the base code for audio capture
and output.
6.2 Processor SDK Documentation
Most of the processor SDK documentation is available online at Texas Instruments’ website. The software

RUNNING THE ENCODER7.0
This section gives step-by-step instructions on using the Z3-AM572x-RPS to encode 720p video from an HDMI
video source to a PC media player. In addition to the Z3-AM572x-RPS, you will need the following:
A non- HDCP source with HDMI output
A computer mouse with a USB connection (wired or wireless will work)
A PC with VLC media player
The SDP file provided with your Z3 software release (see your customer support server account)
7.1 Set up the Video Source
(1) Select an HD source with HDMI non-HDCP output (in Z3’s testing, the Brite-View BV-5005HD is used).
-Power on the HD Source.
-Connect HDMI to a monitor.
-Set the HD Source to 720p output.
-Select content you would like to stream.
If you see playback on the monitor, you’ve confirmed the source works.
7.2 Connect the Encoder
Connect the supplied 2.5 mm serial cable and gender changer to the serial console of the application(1)
board and to your PC.
Take the HDMI cable connected to the monitor and now connect it to HDMI In on the board.(2)
Connect an Ethernet cable to the board and a router or other DHCP server on the same network as(3)
your PC. By default the Z3-AM572x-RPS is set to obtain an IP address through DHCP upon start up.
Connect the USB cable or wireless USB stick for your computer mouse to the USB 2.0 jack on the(4)
application board. This will be used for configuration and control.

7.3 Set up the Terminal Window
If you are running from a Windows PC, we recommend running TeraTerm for serial configuration and(5)
monitoring. Select “Setup – Serial Port” and use the following settings:
Port: Whichever serial port the port is connected to
Baud Rate: 115200
Data: 8-bit
Parity: None
Stop: 1-bit
Flow Control: None
If you are running from Linux, type:(6)
# sudo minicom –s
And then configure by doing the following:
-Select “Serial Port Setup”
-Ensure the right Serial Device is specified (typically “/dev/ttyUSB0”)
-Set option E (“Bps/Par/Bits”) to 115200 8N1
-Press <return>
-Select “Exit”
7.4 Power on the Board
Connect the 12V 2.5A power supply and turn on the power switch. If all is configured properly, you(7)
will see the board booting up within the terminal window.
This will bring up the TI Matrix App Launcher on the TV monitor. The Z3-AM572x-RPS comes preloaded with
several demonstration applications. Many of these have been provided by Texas Instruments for the AM572x
processor. You will be able to access these applications using the computer mouse connected to your RPS.
The same Matrix App Launcher is also available on the Web server of the Z3-AM572x-RPS.
For more information on included Texas Instruments applications, please consult their website as outlined in
Section 6.2: Processor SDK Documentation.

7.5 Start Encoding
In the Matrix App Launcher, select the icon labeled “Multimedia”.(8)
In the Multimedia Submenu, select the icon labeled “Z3 720P RTP Encode”.(9)
Click on “run”.(10)
This application is pre-configured to encode your 720p HDMI content and output it via RTP.(11)
*Note: This application will output video only for two to three minutes. Audio is not currently
supported.

7.6 Run VLC to View the RTP Stream
If you have not yet done so, copy the “z3-am5728.sdp” file received from Z3 to your PC.(12)
Run the VLC media player on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 2.05)(13)
Select Media –Open File.(14)
Select the “z3-am5728.sdp” file on your PC.(15)
You will now see your source video streaming to VLC.(16)

SETTING A STATIC IP ADDRESS8.0
By default the Z3-AM572x-RPS is set to DHCP and will obtain an IP address from the DHCP server (i.e. a
router or gateway) upon start up.
DHCP is usually the recommended option because it allows all of the Internet examples to run correctly.
However, if you want to assign a static IP address to your system, the easiest way is to edit the file
“uEnv.txt” in the boot partition of your boot device.
Here is an example of the following static IP settings:(1)
Z3-AM572x-RPS IP address: 192.168.57.28
Default gateway IP address: 192.168.0.6
IP Netmask: 255.255.0.0
NFS server IP address: 192.168.0.6
fdtfile=am57xx-z3-30-0051.dtb
optargs=ip=192.168.57.28::192.168.0.6:255.255.0.0:Z3-30-0050:eth0:off::

There are three ways to take the image files you built in Section 5.0 and run them on the RPS:
Write image to an SD card(1)
Copy the SD card image(2)
Setting up NFS to link to your development PC(3)
9.1 Method 1: Write Image to an SD Card
First you must create an SD card image by running the command:(1)
sudo bin/z3-create-sdcard-img.sh
This will create the image file
images/z3-emmc.img
Obtain a microSD card 4 GB or larger in size.(2)
You can write to the microSD card using either Linux or Windows. You will need to have an SD card(3)
reader to access the SD card.
(a) Linux method: use the install script shown below.
*Note: You need to replace sdd with your SD card block device.
sudo umount /dev ssd*
sudo bin/z3-install-sdcard-img.sh images/z3-img /dev/sdd
If you don't know which device to use, this command will list all the removable devices:
lsblk -d -o NAME,RM | grep '1$'
If there is more than one item in the list, then re-run the command with the SD card
removed, then re-insert the SD card and run the command a second time. Whichever
device is new the second time will be the SD card device.

9.2 Method 2: Copy the SD Card Image to Internal eMMC Flash
Follow the steps in Section 9.1 to write the SD card image.(1)
Power down the Z3-AM572x-RPS.(2)

Set up the RS-232 terminal according to the steps in Section 7.3.

In the Terminal window, hold down on the spacebar before powering on the RPS.(4)
While the spacebar is still pressed down, power on the RPS. Continue holding the spacebar down until(5)
you see the U-Boot prompt:

9.3 Method 3: NFS-mounted Development
(1) The U-Boot ethernet driver is not supported in the preliminary releases, so you have to make the
following changes to the first partition –the first partition is usually named “boot”, and contains
the files “MLO” and “u-boot.img”.
Copy the zImage and z3*.dtb files to
cp targetNFS/boot/zImage /media/z3/boot/.
cp targetNFS/boot/z3*.dtb /media/z3/boot/.
(2) Edit the uEnv.txt for NFS booting:
gedit board/u-boot*/uEnv-mmc-boot-no-tftp-rootfs-nfs.txt
(3) Change the following values to match your NFS server IP address, and NFS path:
serverip=192.168.0.6
rootpath=/home/z3/z3-am57xx/targetNFS
(4) Copy the changed file to uEnv.txt on the first partition of the SD card:
cp board/u-boot*/uEnv-mmc-boot-no-tftp-rootfs-nfs.txt /media/z3/boot/uEnv.txt
(5) Umount the first partition of the SD card
umount /media/z3/boot
umount /media/z3/rootfs
(6) Enable NFS on the Linux PC. The target will mount the root file system using NFS.

This will vary depending on the Linux setup you have. As an example, here is a set of steps that would be
run from Ubuntu 10.x or later (these are in gray to denote they can vary from system to system):
(a) Get NFS if it is not already installed:
# sudo apt-get install nfs-kernel-server
(b) Add an entry for the file system directory in /etc/exports. For example, the line would be
something like (here, 192.168.0.6 is the IP address of the PC):
/home/z3/z3-am57xx 192.168.0.6/255.255.0.0(no_root_squash,insecure,nohide,rw,async)
(c) Create symbolic links in your top-level directory to allow access to your filesys and images
directory. Actual directory name may be different depending on your specific release:
# cd /home/z3/z3-am57xx
# ln –s z3-AM572x-RPS-20160217/images images
# ln –s z3-AM572x-RPS-20160217/filesys filesys
(d) Start the NFS server
# sudo service nfs-kernel-server restart
(7) Make sure the Z3-AM572x-RPS is connected to your DHCP-capable network.
*Note: If you want to use a static IP, follow the static IP example in Section 8.0.
(8) Power on the Z3-AM572x-RPS.
9.4 U-Boot Start Up Sequence
Besides booting from NAND and TFTP/NFS, there are other boot configurations that are possible. Below
are the possible options provided in the Z3 u-boot environment:

In normal operation the bold commands will be run.
The findfdt command attempts to identify the board, and select the proper Device Tree file (with a .dtb
extension) so that the Linux kernel knows what hardware to expect. The expected file is set in the
fdtfile environment variable.
