1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The ZEUS Z3-DME-20 is a cost-optimized, compact system that allows H.265 and H.264 encode in 4K, HD or
SD resolutions. They system supports multiple input options from SDI, HDMI or Display Port. It allows users
to quickly take video from any of those three sources and stream them to the web or internal clients/PCs
via UDP, RTP or RTSP. This system is also enabled with Zixi FeederTM.
This solution is ideal for applications such as low-cost broadcast encoders, low-bandwidth satellite uplink,
remote monitoring and industrial applications. The Z3-DME-20 provides immediate access to H.265/H.264
and MJPEG video, integrated system peripherals and production-qualified codecs. The Z3-DME-20 features
4K performance, low latency while utilizing low power consumption.

2.0 QUICK START GUIDE
2.1 If You Have Received a System from Z3 with the Software Preloaded
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section 6.0, “RUNNING THE ENCODER,” on page
13. This section describes how to quickly generate a UDP, RTP or RTSP stream to VLC, how to stream
RTMP, how to tune for latency, how to stream in multiple resolutions, recording to USB/SD storage
devices, and how to utilize Zixi FeederTM and Pro-MPEG Forward Error Correction. Encoding from HDMI
and SDI is described.
2.2 If You Already Have a System from Z3 and Need to Update the Firmware
You can update the firmware via the HTTP-based user interface (GUI) by following the instructions in
Section 7.8 “Making a Firmware Update” on page 43.

6.0 RUNNING THE ENCODER
This section gives step-by-step instructions on HEVC/H.265 encoding with the Z3-DME-20 and streaming
2160p video to VLC media player running on your PC. In addition to the Z3-DME-20, an HD video source
with non-HDCP HDMI output and a PC with VLC media player are required. Encoding with an SDI source is
described in Sections 6.12 and 6.13.
Please Note: Actual version numbers for your Z3 product may differ from those pictured in this document.
6.1 Set up the UHD Source
(1) Select an HD source with HDMI output.
-Power on the UHD Source.
-Connect HDMI to a monitor.
-Set the UHD Source to 2160p output.
-If your source is a media player, select the content you would like to stream.
If you see playback on the monitor, you’ve confirmed the source works.
6.2 Connect and Power Up the Z3-DME-20
(2) Connect the HDMI source to “HDMI In” on the rear panel of the encoder.
(3) Connect an Ethernet cable from “Ethernet” on the back of the Z3-DME-20 to a switch, router or
other DHCP server on the same network as your Windows PC.
(4) Connect the 12V power supply, and turn on the power switch. It will take 20-30 seconds to boot.

6.3 Access the User Interface using ZFinder
ZFinder is a PC Utility that allows you to find any Z3 Technology product on your network. If you have
not downloaded this to your computer, you can find it on the USB drive provided with your system.
(1) Verify your PC is on the same network. If you are not in the same network, your device will appear
in red in Z-Finder or Z-Finder may not be able to find your device.
(2) Run the “ZFinder” PC Utility on your Windows PC. The ZFinder window appears. ZFinder completes
a scan of the network and lists the location of all Z3 systems connected to the network. In this
case, the Z3-DME-20 appears.
(3) Click on the Z3-DME-20 entry in the window to select it. This will cause the “Edit Device”, “Open
Device” and “Flash LEDs” boxes to activate.

*Note: Selecting “Edit Device” allows for manual changes to network settings including the Device Name, IP
Address, Netmask and Gateway address. Edit Device will only edit the device in Z-Finder. IP settings will need
to changed and Save in the System Set-up tab of the web gui.
Selecting “Flash LED’s” causes the status lights on the encoder to flash and can be helpful if multiple devices
are in use.
*Note: If the device appears in red, there is a network error, and network settings will need to be modified in
order to access the user interface.

Click on “Open Device.” An Internet browser window is opened (for best results, Firefox or Chrome are
recommended) and the HTTP-based graphical user interface (GUI) appears at the CH1 tab.

6.4 Configure Encoder for Streaming UDP
Note: Settings in the user interface cannot be changed if the unit is currently encoding.
(1) If necessary, click the “Stop” button in the “Channel Controls” section of the CH1 tab or the “Stop
All” button in the lower right corner of any screen to stop any current encoding.
(2) At the CH1 tab, verify the “Video Source” is set to “HDMI” using the dropdown menu.
(3) Change “Output Resolution” to “3840x2160” or “Follow Input”.
(4) Select the codec you would like to use for your encoding. Both H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC are
supported. In the pictured example, verify “Video Codec” is set to “H265(HEVC)”.
(5) Set “Output Format” to “UDP”.
(6) You can set the “Dest Address” to:
(a) the IP address of your PC that will be running the VLC media player (in the pictured
example, 192.168.0.6)
(b) or to a multicast address (An example multicast address would be “225.1.2.3”. If you are
on a shared network, check with your Network Administrator.)
(7) Make note of the value of “Dest Port” (This will be “8600” by default).
(8) Click the “Start” button.

6.5 View the UDP Stream in VLC
(1) Run the VLC media player on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 2.1.5).
(2) Select Media – Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@192.168.0.6:8600”, where
“192.168.0.6” matches the values of the computer IP address or multicast address entered for
“Dest Address” previously and “8600” is the value of “Dest Port” noted previously.

(3) Press “Enter.”
(4) You will now see video streaming to VLC.

6.6 Configure Encoder for Streaming RTP
Note: Settings in the user interface cannot be changed if the unit is currently encoding.
(1) Return to the user interface.
(2) If necessary, click the “Stop” button in the “Channel Controls” section of the CH1 tab or the “Stop
All” button in the lower right corner of any screen to stop any current encoding.
(3) At the CH1 tab, verify the “Video Source” is set to “HDMI” using the dropdown menu.
(4) Verify “Output Resolution” to “3840x2160” or “Follow Input”.
(5) Select the codec you would like to use for your encoding. Both H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC are
supported. In the pictured example, “Video Codec” is set to “H265(HEVC)” in the dropdown menu.
(6) Verify the codec under “Audio Info” is set to the codec you would like to use for your encoding.
Both AACHE and AACHEv2 are supported. In the pictured example, “Codec” is set to “ARM AACHE”
in the dropdown menu.
(7) Set “Output Format” to “RTP”.
(8) Click the “Start” button.

6.7 View the RTP Stream in VLC
An SDP file is needed to view an RTP stream from the Z3-DME-20 in the VLC media player. You can find

(2) Select “Media – Open File”.
(3) In the file type dropdown menu, select “All Files (*)”.
(4) Find and select the SDP file corresponding to the video and audio codec you selected previously.
(a) H265(HEVC) video + AACHE audio: use the SDP file entitled “z3-netra_h265_aache.sdp”

(c) H264(AVC) + no audio: use the SDP file entitled “z3-netra_h264.sdp”
(5) Click “Open”.
(6) You will now see video streaming to VLC.

6.8 Configure Encoder for Streaming RTSP
Note: Settings in the user interface cannot be changed if the unit is currently encoding.
(1) Return to the user interface.
(2) If necessary, click the “Stop” button in the “Channel Controls” section of the CH1 tab or the “Stop
All” button in the lower right corner of any screen to stop any current encoding.
(3) At the CH1 tab, verify the “Video Source” is set to “HDMI” using the dropdown menu.
(4) Verify “Video Resolution” to “3840x2160” or “follow input”.
(5) Select the codec you would like to use for your encoding. Both H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC are
supported. In the pictured example, “Video Codec” is set to “H265(HEVC)” in the dropdown menu.
(6) Set “Output Format” to “RTSP”.
(7) Make note of your encoder’s IP address. This can be found in ZFinder or as the URL of the web
browser running the user interface.
(8) Click the “Start” button.
