1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
The Z3-MVE-100 1080p60 Multichannel HD Video Encoder and Streamer is a compact 280mm x
165mm system that supports dual H.264 High Profile encode up to 1080p at 60 frames per second.
This solution is well-suited for applications such as low cost broadcast encoders, low bandwidth
video security, satellite uplinks, remote monitoring, and industrial applications. The Z3-MVE-100
provides immediate access to HD video, integrated system peripherals and production-qualified
codecs.
The Z3-MVE-100 offers multi-format, multi-channel HD video up to 1080p60. The Z3-MVE-100
features HD performance, compact size, and low latency while having less power consumption than
a PC-based encoder platform.
1.1 Thermal Management
Install the unit in a location with plenty of cool air flow. Allow enough room on all sides of the Z3-
MVE-100 for proper ventilation. Cool air must be able to run through the enclosure vents, and hot
air must be allowed to escape. Do not block the cooling vents. Do not stack multiple units on top of
one another. Additional fans are also recommended while the unit is running. If forced air is
available, it is best that the cool air enters through the side of the enclosure closest to the power
switch.

5.0 HOOKING UP AND RUNNING THE Z3-MVE-100
For this demonstration, you will need: a computer, a 1080p/1080i video source, a Z3-MVE-100, a
12V power supply, an HDMI cable, and at least 1 Ethernet cable.
To use and run the MVE-100, please follow these steps:

5.1 Setting up the Video Source
(1) Select an HD source with HDMI non-HDCP output (in Z3’s testing, the Brite-View BV-5005HD is
used).
-Power on the HD Source
-Connect an HDMI cable from the HD Source to a monitor
-Set the HD Source to 1080p or 1080i output
-Select and begin playback of the content
If you see playback on the monitor, you’ve confirmed the source works. Now move the HDMI
cable from the monitor to “HDMI In” on the Z3-MVE-100 so that the cable runs from the HD
Source to the Z3-MVE-100 (see Figure 4).
5.2 Connecting the Z3-MVE-100
(2) Connect an Ethernet cable to “Ethernet” on the Z3-MVE-100 (see Figure 4). Connect the other
end of the Ethernet cable directly to a PC. You will use this PC to control the Z3-MVE-100 and
to decode the output stream.
(3) Connect the 12V power supply to “+12V DC” (see Figure 4).

5.3 Setting Up the Control PC
(4) Set the PC IP address to one that can communicate with the Z3-MVE-100.
(a) Find the IP address of the Z3-MVE-100. It can be found on the sticker on the bottom of the
Z3-MVE-100. It should be 192.168.81.68.
(b) This means you need to set your PC to an IP address of 192.168.x.y, where x is any number
except 81 and y is any number except 68. Decide on an address (if any will do, we
recommend using 192.168.0.6).
(c) If you are using a Windows PC, bring up the IP Properties window of your PC. Though this
may vary depending on the version of Windows running on your PC, a typical sequence would
be something like:
(i) Find the “My Network Places” icon and double-click on it to bring up the “My Network
Places” window.
(ii) On the left side of that window, find “View Network Connections” and click on that.
(iii) This should bring up a list of connections. If the Ethernet cable is connected, one of
the connections that shows up is “Local Area Connection”. Right-click on this and
select “Properties”.
(iv) You should then see a “Local Area Connection Properties” Window. In this window, one
of the options is “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)”. Select this and click on “Properties”.

(d) At this point, you should now see the “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties” window (Figure
7). Click on “Use the following IP address” and set the IP Address to the value you determined
in step 4b (default value = 192.168.0.6). Also make sure the netmask is “255.255.0.0”. Then
click “Ok” to save these values.
(e) If you are using Linux, you can set up an alias network address to match what you need. An
example of a command doing this would be:
# sudo ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.0.6 netmask 255.255.0.0

5.4 Configuring the Z3-MVE-100
(5) Power on the Z3-MVE-100.
(6) Wait around 30 seconds to 1 minute.
(7) Open a web browser (FireFox or Chrome is recommended). Type in http://192.168.81.68. You
should then see the Z3-MVE-100 Opening Menu (If you don’t see this, please see the
Troubleshooting section on page 30).

(8) In the menu you should see 5 tabs:
System Setup: Set IP address of board, assign optional device name and password to board.
User Presets: Store current configuration as default or under a user-defined name.
Status: Check current system status (Note: Takes ~5 seconds to update)
CH1: Configure channel 1 encoder
CH2: Configure channel 2 encoder
(9) Click on “CH1”. This will bring up the CH1 configuration menu. Change “Output Format” to
“UDP”, “Dest Address” to the IP address of your PC as determined in Step (3) (default value =
192.168.0.6). Also note the value of “Dest Port” (default value 5004). This will be important
when configuring VLC to receive the encoded stream:

(10) The encoder may have already started. If it has, click on “stop”. The status should then
change to “STOPPED”. Then click on “start”. Once you do this, the status will change to
“RUNNING”. If the encoder hadn’t started already, simply click on “start” and observe the
status change to “RUNNING”:

5.5 Opening a VLC Client to Receive the Encoded Stream
(11) Run VLC on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 2.05).
(12) Select Media – Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@192.168.0.6:5004”, where
“192.168.0.6” is the IP address of your PC and 5004 is the value of “Dest Port” from (9).
(13) Press “Enter”.
(2) Status changes to “Not running”

(14) You should now see video streaming from VLC.

5.6 Streaming an RTP Stream
Once you have UDP streaming, it is relatively simple to change to RTP streaming. All that is
needed are a change of settings and an SDP file (an example file is provided with the software
release from Z3). To stream using RTP, do the following steps:
(15) In the CH1 configuration tab, click on “stop” to stop the current encoding sessions.
(16) Change “Output Format” from “UDP” to “RTP” (see Figure 10).
(17) Confirm that “Dest Port” (see Figure 10) is 5004 (this will be important for the VLC
configuration).
(18) Copy the “z3-netra.sdp” file received from Z3 to your PC.
(19) Open VLC. Select “Media – Open File” and select the “z3-netra.sdp” file you just copied.
(20) You should then see RTP video streaming on VLC:

6.0 PERFORMING OTHER OPERATIONS WITH THE Z3-MVE-100
6.1 Saving Current Settings
If you have a specific configuration of CH1 (and/or CH2) you’d like to preserve, you can save it so
that when the Z3-MVE-100 is powered off and back on, it automatically uses those settings. This
can be done with the following steps:
(1) Once you make a change you want to save, select “serial_menu” from presets and click on
“Save” at the bottom of the CH1 configuration menu:

Now, if you reboot the MVE-100, you should see that encode will automatically start with those
settings.
(1) Select “serial_menu”

Saving Custom Configurations
(2) There is also support for saving configurations under different file names and specifying a file
name to use when rebooting. As an example of using this, go to the CH1 tab and set the encode
bit rate to “3000K”, click “stop”, then click “start”. Confirm STATUS changes to “RUNNING”:

(3) Now let’s say you want to save this lower bit rate encode in a custom setting. Click on the
“User Presets” tab. This brings up the User Presets options:
(4) Click on “new”. This brings up the “New User Preset” input box. Type in “low_bitrate” and
click “ok”.
