1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The DMD-10J decoder is a cost-optimized, compact 137 x 117 mm system that allows HEVC/H.265 decode
of HD video (up to 1080i).
This solution is ideal for applications such as low-cost broadcast decoders, low-bandwidth video security,
satellite uplink, remote monitoring and industrial applications. The DMD-10J provides immediate access to
H.265/HEVC HD video, integrated system peripherals and production-qualified codecs.
The DMD-10J features HD performance, compact size, and low latency while still having less power
consumption than a PC-based decoder platform.

2.0 QUICK START GUIDE
If You Have Received an Decoder with the Software Preloaded2.1
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section 7.0, “RUNNING THE DECODER,” on
page 11. This section describes how to decode an RTSP or TSRTP stream and how to utilize Pro-MPEG
Forward Error Correction.
If You Already Have an Decoder and Need to Update the Firmware2.2
You can update the firmware via the HTTP-based user interface (GUI) by following the instructions in
Section 8.3 “Making a Firmware Update”on page 20.
Please Note: Actual version numbers for your DMD-10J product may differ from those pictured in this document.

5.0 THERMAL CONSIDERATIONS
Maximum Operating Temperature: 50Celsius
This maximum is subject to conformance to the following operating conditions:
In order to operate at the specified maximum temperature of 50C, the unit must be placed directly on a
metallic rack shelf with enough ventilation to not allow heat buildup at the unit or the shelf. The shelf
itself must be at or below 50C.
Do not place items between the DMD-10J unit and the shelf.

7.0 RUNNING THE DECODER
This section gives step-by-step instructions on HEVC/H.265 decoding compressed video with the DMD-10J
and displaying 1080i video to a TV. In addition to the DMD-10J, a video encoder or other source for
compressed content and an HD TV or monitor with SDI input are required.
Please Note: Actual version numbers for your DMD-10J product may differ from those pictured in this document.
Connect and Power On the DMD-10J7.1
Connect an Ethernet cable from “Ethernet” on the back of the DMD-10J to a switch, router or other(1)
DHCP server on the same network as your Windows PC and the video encoder that will be sending
the compressed stream.
Connect “SDI Out” on the rear panel of the decoder to the HD TV or monitor.(2)
Connect the 12V power supply and turn on the power switch. It will take 20-30 seconds to boot.(3)
Access the User Interface using ZFinder7.2
ZFinder is a PC Utility that allows you to find any Z3 Technology product on your network. If you have
not downloaded this to your computer, you can find it on your customer account on Z3 Technology’s
support server.

Verify your PC is set to DHCP. If it is set to a static IP address, ZFinder will be unable to discover(4)
your encoder, or it will appear in red, and you may be unable to proceed further.
Run the “ZFinder” PC Utility on your Windows PC. The ZFinder window appears. ZFinder completes (5)
a scan of the network and lists the location of all Z3 systems connected to the network. In this
case, the DMD-10J appears.
Click on the DMD-10J entry in the window to select it. This will cause the “Edit Device”, “Open (6)
Device” and “Flash LEDs” boxes to activate.

*Note:Selecting “Edit Device” allows for manual changes to network settings including the Device
Name, IP Address, Netmask and Gateway address. Selecting “Flash LED’s” causes the status lights on
the encoder to flash and can be helpful if multiple devices are in use.
*Note:If the device appears in red, there is a network error, and network settings will need to be
modified in order to access the user interface.

Click on “Open Device.” An Internet browser window is opened (for best results, Firefox or Chrome(7)
are recommended) and the HTTP-based graphical user interface (GUI) appears at the CH1 tab.

Set up a Video Encoder IP Output
7.1
Select a video encoder with RTSP or TSRTP output over IP.(8)
-Connect a 1080i video source.
-Configure the encoder to output RTSP or TSRTP over IP.
-View the encoded video on your PC to confirm encoder setup.
Configure Decode of RTSP Stream7.2
Return to the DMD-10J user interface and, if necessary, click the “Stop” button in the “Channel (9)
Controls” section of the CH1 tab to stop any current decoding.
Set “Input Interface” to “RTSP” to match the output format of your video encoder.(10)
Enter the IP address of the encoder followed by “/z3-1.sdp” for “Server IP”. In the pictured(11)
example, “10.1.10.237/z3-1.sdp” is used.
Click the “Start” button. After 5-10 seconds, decoded content will appear on the TV or monitor.(12)
Configure Decode of TSRTP Stream7.3
Return to the DMD-10J user interface and, if necessary, click the “Stop” button in the “Channel (13)
Controls” section of the CH1 tab to stop any current decoding.
Set “Input Interface” to “TSRTP” to match the output format of your video encoder.(14)
If your encoder is outputting to a multicast address, check the box next to “Is Multicast” and ender (15)
the multicast address in the text box that appears.
Enter the Port number to match the port used for your encoder stream.(16)

Click the “Start” button. After 5-10 seconds, decoded content will appear on the TV or monitor.(17)
Decoding with Pro-MPEG Forward Error Correction7.4
The DMD-10J supports decode of TSRTP streams with Pro-MPEG Forward Error Correction (FEC). The
unit is set to automatically detect for the use of Pro-MPEG FEC by the encoded stream.

8.0 PERFORMING OTHER OPERATIONS WITH THE DMD-10J
Saving Current Settings8.1
If you have a specific configuration you’d like to preserve, you can save it so that when the decoder is
powered off and back on, it automatically uses those settings.
Change your desired settings.(1)
Once your changes have been set in this configuration, click on the “Save”button.(2)

Using a Static IP Address
8.2
The decoder supports DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). This is enabled by default, allowing
the decoder to dynamically receive an IP address at startup. The IP address that is assigned can be seen
through using ZFinder. If you prefer, you can set your decoder to a static IP address. If you would like
to have your PC set to a static IP address, you will need to set your decoder to a static IP address as
well in order for it to be discoverable by ZFinder.
To set your unit to a static IP address, complete the following steps:
Return to the System Setup tab.(3)
Un-check the “Use DHCP” box.(4)
Enter in your desired network settings including “Local IP Address”, “Local Netmask”, “Default(5)
Gateway”, “DNS Server IP 1”, and “DNS Server IP 2”.
Click on the “Save” button.(6)

8.2.1 Open the User Interface Using ZFinder
Run the “ZFinder” PC Utility on your Windows PC. The ZFinder window appears. ZFinder(1)
completes a scan of the network and lists the location of all Z3 systems connected to the
network. The DMD-10J appears with your manually entered IP address.

Select the DMD-10J and click “Open Device.” (2)
*Note: You may need to also update the network settings on the PC running ZFinder so that the
decoder is discoverable. If the unit appears in red, your computer’s IP address or Network Mask
may not be compatible with the decoder and changes may be required before you can access the
user interface.

A web browser will then open at the IP address of the DMD-10J and you will see the user(3)
interface.
You can return to the use of DHCP by checking the “Use DHCP” checkbox in the System Setup tab (4)
and saving that to the preset.
8.2.2 Open the User Interface Manually
You can also access the user interface by manually typing your unit’s static IP address into a web
browser.

Making a Firmware Update
8.3
The DMD-10J supports updating of firmware through the user interface. You will need an update
image file.
(1) Access the user interface and return to the System Setup tab.
(2) Click the “Update device firmware” button.
(3) This brings you to the update image screen. In this screen, click on the “Choose File”button.
(4) This brings you to the File Selection Screen. Navigate to the .img file to update with and click
“Open”.
(5) Click on “Upload and Update”.
(6) You will see screens stating that the image is being uploaded and that the flash is being
updated. After about one minute, you should see the main menu again.
