1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Z3-DME-04 is a cost-optimized, compact 157 x 122 mm system that allows encode of HD video (up to
1080p60) through SDI or HDMI input, and encode of SD video through a composite input. It allows users to
quickly take video from any of those three sources and stream them to the web or internal clients/PCs via
UDP, RTP, or RTMP. This solution is ideal for applications such as low-cost broadcast encoders, low-
bandwidth video security, satellite uplink, remote monitoring and industrial applications. The Z3-DME-04
provides immediate access to multi-format HD video, integrated system peripherals and production-
qualified codecs.
The Z3-DME-04 features HD performance, compact size, and low latency while still having less power
consumption than a PC-based encoder platform.

2.0 QUICK START GUIDE
If You Have Received a System from Z3 with the Software Preloaded2.1
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section 6.0, “RUNNING THE ENCODER,” on
page 11. This section describes how to quickly generate a UDP or RTP stream to VLC, how to change
bitrate dynamically, how to adjust the UDP TS rate, how to tune for latency, and how to use DHCP.
Encoding from SDI is described. For encoding from HDMI or composite, a special step of creating a CH2
to encode from is needed. This is described in detail on page 23.
Details on streaming RTMP and also on using the “Encode 1 to 3 Ch” mode (which allows one source to
be encoded three different ways, as long as the total processing involved fits within the constraints of
the encoder’s performance) can be found in Section 7.0, “ STREAMING RTMP IN THREE DIFFERENT
RESOLUTIONS,” on page 28. There are additional notes on successfully configuring Wowza in “APPENDIX
A: Configuring the Wowza Server for RTMP,” on page 54.
If You Already Have a System from Z3 and Need to Update the Firmware2.2
You can update the firmware via the HTTP-based user interface (GUI) by following the instructions in
Section 8.3 “Making a Firmware Update”on page 40.

6.0 RUNNING THE ENCODER
This section gives step-by-step instructions on using the Z3-DME-04 to stream 1080p or 1080i video to VLC
running on your PC. In addition to the Z3-DME-04, an HD source with SDI output and a PC with the VLC
media player are required. Encoding with an HDMI or a composite source is described later in Section 6.10.
Please Note: Actual version numbers for your Z3 product may differ from those pictured in this document.
Set up the HD Source6.1
Select an HD source with SDI output.(1)
-Power on the HD Source.
-Connect SDI to a monitor.
-Set the HD Source to 1080i output.
-Select content you would like to stream.
If you see playback on the monitor, you’ve confirmed the source works.
Connect and Power Up the Z3-DME-046.2
Connect the SDI source to “SDI In” on the front of the unit.(2)
Connect an Ethernet cable from “Ethernet” on the back of the Z3-DME-04 to a switch, router or(3)
other DHCP server on the same network as your Windows PC.
Connect the 5V power supply, and turn on the power switch. It will take 45-60 seconds to boot.(4)

Find the Z3-DME-04 Using ZFinder6.3
ZFinder is a PC Utility that allows you to find any Z3 Technology product on your network. If you have
not yet downloaded this to your computer, you can find it on the USB drive provided with your system.
Verify your PC is set to DHCP. If it is set to a static IP address, ZFinder will be unable to discover(5)
your encoder, or it will appear in red and you will be unable to proceed further.
Run the “ZFinder” PC Utility on your Windows PC. The ZFinder window appears. ZFinder does a scan(6)
of the network and lists the location of all Z3 systems connected to the network. In this case, the
Z3-DME-04 appears.
Click on the Z3-DME-04 entry in the window to select it. This will cause the “Edit Device”, “Open (7)
Device” and “Flash LEDs” boxes to activate.

*Note:Selecting “Edit Device” allows for manual changes to network settings. Selecting “Flash
LED’s” is not applicable to the Z3-DME-04 as there are no LEDs.
Click on “Open Device.” An Internet browser window is opened (for best results, we recommend(8)
using Firefox or Chrome) and the HTTP-based graphical user interface (GUI) appears at the System
Setup tab.

You can set the “Dest Address” to:(12)
(a) the IP address of your PC that will be running the VLC media player (in the pictured
example, 192.168.0.6)
(b) or to a multicast address (An example multicast address would be “225.1.2.3”. If you are
on a shared network, check with your Network Administrator.)
Make note of the value of “Dest Port” (This will be “5004”by default).(13)

The encoder may have already started (after 20 seconds, the encoder will automatically try to(14)
start). If it has, click on “stop” near the bottom of the screen. The status will then change to
“STOPPED”. Then click on “start”. Once you do this, the status will change to “RUNNING.” If the
encoder hadn’t started already, simply click on “start” and observe the status change.
*Note:If you want to encode 1080p60, you must first change “Operating Mode” at the bottom
right from “Encode Interlaced/Progressive” to “Encode Single CH No Scale.” Note that, in
“Encode Single CH No Scale” mode, only CH1 can be used.

Run VLC on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 2.1.5)(15)
Select Media –Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@192.168.0.6:5004”, where (16)
“192.168.0.6” matches the values of the computer IP address or multicast address entered for
“Dest Address” in step 6.4(12), and 5004 is the value of “Dest Port” noted in step 6.4(13).
Press “Enter.” (17)
You should now see video streaming to VLC:(18)

Streaming RTP

Once you have UDP streaming, it is relatively simple to change to RTP streaming. One parameter
change is all that is needed. To stream using RTP, complete the following steps:
In the CH1 configuration tab, click on “stop” to stop the current encoding session.(19)
Change “Output Format” from “UDP” to “RTP.”(20)
Click on “start” to start the RTP encoding session. At this point your settings should look like the(21)
following:
Open VLC. Select “Media – Open Network Stream”.(22)
In the “Open Media” box, type “rtsp://{IP Address}/z3-{ch #}{m}.mp4”, where {IP Address} is the (23)
IP address of the Z3-DME-04, {ch #} is 1 for CH1, 2 for CH2, and 3 for CH3, and {m} is added if a
multicast address is being streamed. For example, if the IP address of the Z3-DME-04 is
192.168.1.3, encode is being done from CH1, and unicast streaming is being done, the user would
type in “rtsp://192.168.1.3/z3-1.mp4”:

Changing the Bitrate Dynamically6.7
The Z3-DME-04 includes an “Update” button which allows you to change the bitrate and/or frame rate
without stopping and restarting the encoder. To use this feature, complete the following steps:
In VLC, click on “Tools” and select “Codec Information.” This brings up a window with four tabs.(25)
Select the “Statistics” tab. In this tab, you can see the current video + audio bitrate:

In the CH1 screen, change the bit rate from “8000K” to “2000K” and click “update”:

If you click on the status page and click “Refresh,” you will also see the updated bitrate reflected:

The parameter “Frame Rate Divider” can also be updated dynamically using the “update”
button. All other parameters require a stop and then start to change.
Adjusting the UDP TS Rate6.8
The Z3-DME-04 includes a parameter to adjust the TS rate independent of the video bitrate. This can
be found just below “PMT PID” when “UDP” is selected as the output format.
Normally, this value is set to 25% to 33% above the sum of the video and audio bitrate. For example,
the default value out of the factory is a value of 10Mbps, corresponding to 8Mbps for the video.
There are times, however, when it is desirable to make this value higher. For example, if the encoder
bitrate is very low (below 1Mbps), it is advisable to allow more leeway in the event there are some
challenging scenes to encode. An example follows:
Return to the “CH1” tab. In this tab, click “stop”. Then change “Video Resolution” to “720x480”,(29)
“Video Bitrate” to “512K”, and “Output Format” to “UDP” (steps 1-4 in the figure below):

Once you select UDP, “TS RATE” should appear with the default value of 10000K. Change this to(30)
