1ModemIntroduction
1.1Introduction
Thankyou forusing ZTEUSBModem.
Toguarantee the modemalwaysinitsbestcondition,please
read thismanualcarefullyand keep itforfurtheruse.
The pictures,symbolsand contentsinthismanualarejustfor
yourreference. Theymightnot be completelyidenticalwithyour
modem.Weoperateapolicy ofcontinuousdevelopment.We

The ZTEUSB Modemisatype ofmulti-mode,3Gmodem,
suitableforGSM/GPRS/WCDMA/EDGE/HSDPA/HSUPA
network.It adoptsUSB interfacewhichprovidesan easy
interfacetolaptopand desktop PC.Withthe GSM/GPRS/
EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA mobilenetwork,itcanhelpyou
carry outSMS,dataserviceand willhelpyou breakawayfrom
the limit oftimeand zone,and realizewireless communication at
anymoment everywhere.
1.2WarningandNotice
Tothe owner
nSomeelectronicdevicesaresusceptibletoelectromagnetic
interferencesent bymodemifinadequatelyshielded, suchas
electronicsystemofvehicles.Pleaseconsultthe
manufacturerofthe devicebeforeusing the modemif
necessary.
nOperatingoflaptop and desktop PCand modemmay
interferewithmedicaldeviceslikehearing aidsand
pacemakers.Pleasealwayskeep themmorethan 20
centimetersawayfromsuchmedicaldeviceswhen theyare
turned on.Turnthe modemoff ifnecessary.Consulta
physician orthemanufacturerofthemedicaldevicebefore
using the modem.

mayinfluencereceiving signals.

2Installation

Connect yourmodemtothe laptop ordesktop computer.
2.2SoftwareInstallation
The systemwill automaticallydetectandrecognizethe
newhardwareand displaythenewiconinthe desktop
statusbar,indicatingthatthecomputerand the USB
Modemhavebeen connectedproperly.Afterafew
seconds,thesystemwill launchthe installation
automatically.
The followingstepsshowtheinstallationprocess.
•Click onthedrop-downbutton tochoosethesetup
language, andclick “OK”.
•Click “Next”tocontinue.
•Read the agreementcarefully.Ifyou agree,choose “Iaccept
theterms ofthelicense agreement”, and then click “Next”.
•Selectthefolderthatyouwanttoinstall thesoftware,and
you can selectadifferentlocation bypressing “Change”,then
click “Next”.
•Wait aminuteand click “Finish”tocompletethe installation.
Note Ifthe systemdoesnotlaunchinstallation automatically,
you can run theinstallation programinpathofMyComputer →
ZTEMODEM →Install.exe.Ifyou haveproblemswith
installationaftertheupperoperation,pleasecontactyou’reyour
serviceprovider.
Afterthe installation,selectthe “Start →Programs”and there
willbe a “ZTEJoinAir”programgroup,whichincludes “JoinAir”
and “Uninstall”.Therewillbe aShortcuticon on the
desktop.

2.3HardwareInstallation
1)InserttheSIM/USIMcardintotheUSBmodem
ToinstallSIM/USIMcard
lFirst takedownthe modemcap,then the USBconnectoris
visible.
lPullthe plasticsocket abovethe USBconnectorout.
lThen insert theSIM/USIMcardintothe socket,heremake
surethatmetalcontact area facing tothe modem.

lInsert the plasticsocketintothe modem. You can heara
click when the SIM/USIMcardlocksintoplace.
ToRemovethe SIM/USIMcardfromthe USBmodem
lFirst takedownthe modemcap.
lPullthe plasticsocket slightly, and you can hearaclick
whenthe SIM/USIMcardgetsunlocked.

lTakeoffthe SIM/USIMcard.
2)InstallthemicroSDcard into theUSBmodem:
Install microSDcardinthe USBmodem,if you want touseit.
InsertthemicroSDintothemicroSDslotfromthe side ofthe
modem,thefollowing pictureindicatesthe correctinserting
direction.

The driverofthemicroSDcardwillinstalledautomaticallywhen
the modemdriverisinstalled.
3)ConnecttheUSBmodem to yourPC:
lPlug the USBmodemintoyourcomputer’sUSB portand
ensurethat itistightlyinserted.
The OSautomaticallydetectsand recognizesnewhardware
and startsthe installation wizard.
2.4Runthe Application Software
Afterthe modemiscorrectlyconnected,clickthe “Start →
Programs →ZTEJoinAir →JoinAir”menuonthelaptop or
desktop PCtorun the application software.
Ordoubleclickthe shortcuticon toruntheapplication
software.
Aftermodeminitialized,the standbyicon appearsinthe
taskbar,the modemcan work properly.Doubleclick ittopopup
the maininterface.

2.5HardwareUninstall
Closethe softwareapplication then removethe hardware
following the procedurebelow.
- Firstlyclickthe “close”menu,and then click “OK”to
closethe software.
-Nowyou can safelyremoveyourUSBModem.
Whenyou useaMicroSDcardinthe modem:
-pleaseleft click the icon inthe Windowssystem
traybar.Apop-up menu indicatesthe USB deviceslist.
-Select “Safelyremovethe USBdisk”whichisrelevant to
the MicroSDcard.
Pulloff theUSBcabledirectly,ifyou wanttodisconnectthe
modemfromthe laptop and desktop PC.
2.6SoftwareUninstall
Closethe application programbeforethe softwareuninstalls.
Click “Start →Programs →ZTEJoinAir →Uninstall”menu on
the laptop ordesktop PC. Andfollowthesystempromptsto
completetheapplicationsoftwareuninstall.
•Click “Yes”toconfirmuninstallof the software.
•Click “Yes”according tothe indication,then the system
beginstouninstallprograms.
•Waitaminuteand click “Finish”tocompletethe application
softwareuninstall.

3Functions&Operation
3.1Interface introduction
3.1.1MainInterface
The wholeinterfaceisdivided intofourparts.Related functions
can be executed byoperation inthe related areas.
1. Systeminformation area:
Showthe systemstatusand different kindsoftips.
Icon Explanations
The icon indicatesthe network signalintensity.
Thereare6stagesfromnone tothe strongest.
The icon indicatesthe currentnetwork type, i.e.
EDGEorGPRS,HSPAservice.
2. Internetinformation area:
Thisarea indicatesthe nameofthe current serviceproviders,
devicecondition and connectioninformation.
3. Functional button area:
Therewill showvariousfunctionbuttonicons.Selectdifferent
functionbutton and itwillcarryoutcorresponding operation.
SMS:Send SMSorread SMS.
Phonebook:Saveand viewthe differentinformationofthe
contacts.
Settings: Set normalrelativeinformation forthe modem.
DataRecord: Showconnection information.

Connect: Connecttothe Internet.
4. Mainmenu button area:
Click on the drop-down button,and selectthe following menu:
Log: The recordsofsoftwareoperation.
Diagnostics: Showyou the hardwareinformation,operational
information and network settings.
Help: Enterthe USB modemsoftwarehelp.
3.1.2Description ofMini Icons
Whenclick the minibutton,the softwarewillminimizeasan icon
on the systemtaskbar.Ifconnected tothe Internet, the
minimized softwarewon’tinfluencethe download ofdataor
receiving SMS. When the application windowisminimized,the
systemiconswilldisplayon the taskbar. Doubleclicktheicon to
resizethe display.

The USBModemisreadytoconnecttoInternet.
The Internetisalreadyconnected.
2. The usesofTrayIcons
Right clickthe trayicon topopup the operationmenu:
Log: The recordsofsoftwareoperation.
Diagnostics: Showyou the hardwareinformation,operational
information and network settings.

Help: Enterthe USB modemsoftwarehelp.
Exit: Closethe softwareand stop the modemfromworking.
3.2Connecting Internet
You can browseweb pagesafteryou haveaccessedtoInternet
withthe helpofmodem, youcan alsoreceiveSMSwhen surfing
intheInternet.
Click the “Connect”button .Then the systemwillresearch
availablenetwork automatically.You canclick “Cancel”button
tocancel connection.
Whenconnected,theinternetinformation areawill showdata
amount,connected time,and activeIEbrowser.Then you can
accessinternet and receiveemailetcthrough network.
You can click “Disconnect”buttontostop the connection when
the “Connect”'button becomes “Disconnect”button.
3.3SMS
Note: Toensurethatthe SMScan beused properly,at first,you
shouldsetup the correctSMS centernumber.Refertosection
“3.5.4SMSSettings”.
Click the “SMS”icon toswitchtothe SMSinterfaceand it
willshowthe numberofmessagesintheinbox,sentboxand
draftboxofPCand SIM/USIMcard.The usercan clickiconsof
“Inbox”, “Sentbox”, “Draftbox”toenterrelativeinterface.
Inbox: Savethe received messages.
Sentbox: Savethe successfullysentmessages.
Draftbox: Savethe editing SMS whichhaven’tbeen sent. The

draftscan onlybesaved incomputer, notSIM/USIM.
3.3.1Read SMS
Click the “Inbox”button on the maininterface,andclick a
message toread thisSMS.
WhenyoureceiveanewSMS,thesystemwill pop-up prompt
dialog box.
3.3.2Createnewmessage
Click “New”button toinputthe recipient’snumberand content.
The recipient’snumbercan be inputdirectlyorbyentering the
phonebooktoselect one/more/group records.
The recipient’samountcan be one ormore.Pleaseuse “;”to
separaterecipients.
The SMScontentcan include 160 individual Englishcharacters
(includingEnglishsymbols).Ontheinterface,therewillshow
total charactersand the numberof sending message.
Click “Send”,the promptscreen willappearon the interface.
Select “OK”, and then the edited shortmessageswillbesent.
Aftersentsuccessfully,theSMSwill be saved intosentbox
automatically.Ifsend fails,itwillbe saved tothe draftbox
automatically.
SendSMSwhilebrowsetheweb:
Whensurfing the Internet,ifyournetwork supports,you can
send shortmessagesatsametime.Click “SMS”button icon,
enterthe shortmessage interfacetosend shortmessages
normally.

3.3.3The SMSboxOperating Guide
Enteranyofthe Inbox/Sentbox/Draftbox toexecutethe
following functions:
lReply: Replyshortmessage tothe sender(whichisonly
availableinthe Inbox).
lForward: Send the shortmessage tootherrecipients
(whichisonlyavailableinthe Inbox).
lSave Num: Savethe sendernumberobtained fromthe
message tothe phonebook.
lMove: Change thesaving location oftheselected
message.MovethismessagefromPCtoSIMcardor
fromSIMcardtoPC.(Can not useinDraftbox)
lDelete: Deletethe selected shortmessages.
Ifyou wanttoselectseveralmessages,you can usethe “Ctrl”or
“Shift”keytoexecutemulti-choice,and left clickan itemtoadd
toselection.
Newmessagecan notbereceivedwhen the SIM/USIMcardis
fullofshortmessages(DifferentSIM/USIMcardshavedifferent
capacities),thesystemwillindicatetheinboxisfull and ask
userstoclearthe inboxatUSIM/SIMcardside,whilenew
message can not be saved.
3.4Phonebook
Click “Phonebook”icon toaccess tothephonebook
window,the phonebookinformation can be saved inthe PCor
SIM/USIMcardand you can choosethe saved position.Each
recordincludescontactname,mobilephone number,family
phone number, officephone number, emailand the group name
whichitbelongsto.
3.4.1Creatinganewcontact
1)Click “New toadd newcontact.

2)Select save position todecide whereyou wanttosaveyour
contact, PC or SIM.
3)Enterthe name,telephone number,Emailaddress,etc.Then
click “OK”.
3.4.2Modifyingcontacts
1)Select acontact and then click Edit tomodify.
2)Afterthe modification,click OK.
3.4.3Deletingcontacts
Selectone ormorecontactsand then click Delete.
3.4.4Sending SMStoacontact
1)Select one ormorecontactsand then click “SMS”.
2)You will access inthe writing SMS windowautomatically, the
selected contactmobilephone numberswillbelistedinthe
receivercolumn.
3)Enterthe contentsofthe message and then click “Send”.
3.4.5Searching foracontact
1)Enterthe searchconditionsinthe searchconditionblank.
2)Click “Search”to beginsearching.
3)The searching resultswilldisplayinthe contactswindow.
3.5Settings
Click “Settings”icon toswitchtothe settingsinterface.It
includes:Connection settings,Network Selection settings,
PreferenceNetwork settings, SMS Settings, Sound settingsand
Securitysettings.
Note: allthe necessary settingshavebeen correctlysaved in
yourUSBmodembyZTE.Thereisnoneed tochange these
default settings.
