Turnthesystemonandoff
Therearetwopossiblemethodsofpoweringthesystem:
•Ifthesystemishard-wiredtoapowerdistributionpanel,switchthesystemonoroffusingapowerdisconnectswitchor
circuitbreaker.
•Ifthesystemisequippedwithapowercord,plugorunplugthecord.
•Thesystemmaybehard-wiredintothepowerdistributionpanelofthefacility’selectricalsystem,inwhichcase,thesystemis
switchedonoroffatapowerdisconnectswitchoratthecircuit-breakerforthecircuitthatsuppliespowertoit.
•ThesystemmaybeequippedwithanACpowercord(ortwoACpowercords,oneateachendofthedetectionsystem),inwhich
casethesystemisonwhilepowercord(s)areconnectedtolivepoweroutlet(s)andoffwhenpowerisdisconnected.
Note:Ifthedetectionsystemisconnectedtopoweratbothendsofthesystem,connectordisconnectpoweratbothlocations.
Verifysystemoperation
Verifysystemoperationeachday.DothisbywalkingthrougheachcorridorwithalibraryitemthathassecuritysetonitsRFID
tag.Eachtripthroughthecorridorshouldtriggeranalarm.
Verifypatroncountoperation
Eachcorridorisequippedwithapatroncounterthatkeepstrackofthepatroncountforthatcorridor.Y oushouldverifypatron
countoperationforeachcorridoreachday,whichrequiresthatyouknowhowthetechnicianconfiguredthepatroncounterto
work.Ifitwasconfiguredto:
•Countoutgoingtrafficonly,exitthelibrarythrougheachcorridorandseeifthecounterincrementsbyone.
•Countincomingtrafficonly,enterthelibrarythrougheachcorridorandseeifthecounterincrementsbyone.
•Countbothoutgoingandincomingtraffic,enterandexitthelibrarythrougheachcorridorandseeifitincrementsbyonewhen
youenterandbyonewhenyouexit.
Adjustspeakervolume
Eachlatticehasaspeakerinsideitsbase.Ifalarmvolumeistooloudortoosoft,itcanbeadjusted.
Note:Youwillneedasmall(4mm[0.16in.]maximumdiameter)flatbladescrewdriver.
Toadjustspeakervolume
1.Locatethespeakervolumeadjustmentknobinsidetheopeningforthespeakerinthelatticebasecover,nexttothespeaker.

2.Usethesmall(4mm[0.16in.]maximumdiameter)flat
bladescrewdriverintheadjustmentknobslottoturnthe
speakervolumetothedesiredlevel.
Tip:Useasecuredbooktotriggerthealarmsoyoucan
hearitasyouadjustthevolume.
Note:Adjustingthevolumemayalsoaffectthefrequency
(pitch)ofthealarm.

Thefollowingprocedureprovidesawaytoresetthepatroncountdisplayedinthepatroncounterwindowofeachlattice.
Tip:Tokeeptrackofthetotalpatroncount,recordthenumberdisplayedinthepatroncounterdisplaywindowbeforeresetting
thepatroncounter.
Toresetthepatroncounter
1.Locatetheaccessholefortheresetbutton,nexttothepatroncounterwindow.

Cleandetectionlattices
CAUTIONTurnoff/unplugthedetectionsystembeforeusingliquidcleanersandtakecaretonotallowliquidintothe
latticebase,asthiscandamagethesystemelectronics.Donotuseharshchemicals,cleaningsolvents,orstrongdetergents,which
maywarp,discolor,craze,orotherwisedamagelattices—particularlythelargeclearpanels.
Useadampsoftcleanclothorchamoistogentlycleanlattices.Dirtparticlesorexcessivepressurecanscratchthelatticepanels.If
surfacesbecomesoiled,cleantheaffectedareawithaclothmoistenedwithasolutionofmildsoapordetergentandlukewarm
water.Rinsewithcleanwateranddryanyresidualmoisturewithaclean,drysoftclothortowel.
Severalantistaticcleanersforacrylicareavailabletoreducestaticelectricityanddustattraction.Wipingwithasoftdampclothor
chamoisisallthatisnecessarytokeeptheclearlatticepanelsdustfreebetweenapplicationofthesecleaners.
Donotusewindowcleaningsprays,kitchenscouringcompounds,orsolventssuchasammonia,alcohol,turpentine,paint
thinner,orlacquerthinner.
Cleanphotocelllensandreector
Atleastonceamonth,wipethephotocelllensandreflectorwithasoftclothdampenedwithwaterordilutedmildsoapordetergent
solutionasdescribedabove.

Hands-onpractice
Afterreviewingthismanual,yourstaffwillbenefitfromactualhands-onexperiencewiththedetectionsystemproductstheyare
expectedtouse.Wesuggestyoustartbydemonstratingthepropertechniquesforeachtaggingprocedure.Y oumaywishto
conducttheactualpracticeasfollows:
1.Makesurethatalltheother3MLibrarySystemsproductsareinstalledandfunctional.
2.Leteachstaffmemberpracticeinstallingthetagsonlibraryitems.
3.Leteachstaffmemberpracticesecuringandunsecuringmaterials.
Reviewofyourlibrary’ssecuritypolicies
Beforepracticinghowtorespondtoalarms,staffshouldbefamiliarwiththelibrary’ssecuritypoliciesastheyrelatetotheftof
materials.Itisimportantthatstaffbecomefamiliarwithstateandlocallawsgoverningpatron’srightsandresponsibilities,andthe
responseshouldbeconsistentforallpatronscaughtinanalarm.
Tohelpstaffstayinformedofsecuritymeasures,yourpolicyshouldbeinwritingandkeptwithyourtrainingkitalongwithany
otherproceduresyoufollow.
Note:Itisparticularlyimportantforstaffmemberstoknowwhatproceduresthelibraryfollowswhentheftissuspectedorwhenit
isnecessarytocontactalocallawenforcementagency.
Acriticalphaseofstafftrainingconcernstheproperstepstotakewhenthesecuritysystemalarmsounds.Thevalueoftact
andcourtesywhenhandlingthisdelicatesituationcannotbeoveremphasized.Yourstaffmembersshouldreceiveasmuch
preparationaspossibletomakethemfeelcomfortable.Withthepropertraining,yourstaffwillbemorelikelytoeffectivelydeal
withpatronswhoactivatethealarm.
Respondingtoalarmscanbeasensitivesituationbutcanalsobehandledconfidentlyandeffectivelyaslongasyourlibraryhas
establishedproceduresandyourstaffmembersarefullytrainedinfollowingthem.
Whattodowhenthealarmsounds
Generally,remaincalmandcourteous.Don’tpanicanddon’trushtoassumptionsaboutthepersonwhotriggeredthealarm.It’s
notpossibletobeimmediatelycertainofthethoughtsormotivesoftheperson.Neveraccuseanyoneoftheftbyword,byfacial
expression,orbytoneofvoice.Inrareoccasions,thealarmmayhavetriggeredfalsely.Inothercases,anitemmaynothavebeen

unsecuredproperly,orthepersonholdingtheitemthatcausedthealarmmaynotevenbeawareitisintheirpossession.Always
respondinapositive,nonthreateningmanner.
Possiblealarmscenarios
Insimpleterms,apatronmightrespondtoatriggeredalarmineitherofthreeways:
1.Thepatronmightstopinthecorridor.
2.Thepatronmightbeunawaretheyhavecausedthealarm,disregardit,andcasuallycontinuetoexit.
3.Thepatronmightrunfortheexit.
Inthethirdscenario,theanswerisobvious:followyourlibrary’spolicyfortheft.
Thesolutionforthefirstandsecondscenariosmaynotbesoclear-cutandyouwillwanttoexercisecourtesyandtactbecauseyou
willwantthepatron’scooperationandinmostcasesthepatronwillwanttocooperate.
Afteraskingthepatrontoreturntothecounter,youmighttypicallyask“Excuseme,didIforgettocheckoutoneofyouritems?”or
“Didyouperhapspickuponeofthelibrary’sbookswithyourownthings?”Thesearecourteousquestionsandtheydon’taccuse
thepatronoftheft.Besuretosmileandaskthequestionsinafriendly,nonthreateningmanner.
Processandunsecureallitemsagain.Ifyoudiscoveranitemthathasn’tbeenproperlycheckedout,neveraccusethepatronof
stealing.Simplyactasiftheerrorwasanoversight—itmorethanlikelywas—andyoucanresolvethesituationeasilyinthismanner.
Ifthepatronisuncooperativeorcausesthealarmtosoundagain,followthepolicythatyourlibraryhasestablishedforpossible
theftofmaterials.
Unwantedalarms
Yourdetectionsystemisvirtuallyfreeoffalsealarms.Occasionallyyoursystemmayalarmandyourstaffmayfindthatthe
patrondoesnothaveunauthorizedlibrarymaterials.Unwantedalarmsmaybecausedbytagsonitemscarriedintothelibrary
suchasbooksfromanotherlibrary.
Unwantedalarmsaregenerallyinfrequentandwillvarydependingonthepatronsandtheproximityofyourlibrarytofacilitiesthat
arereleasingitemscontainingtags.Becauseitisnotpossibletodistinguishbetweenunwantedalarmsandalarmswithpotential
itemloss,allresponsestoalarmsmustbeconsistentandfollowyourmanagementpolicies.Ifpatronsseenoresponsetoalarms,the
systembecomeslesseffective.Whenyoudecidethatatagonanitemfromoutsideyourlibrarycausedanalarm,followthesesteps.
1.Explaintheproblemtothepatron.
2.Verifythatallofthepatron’slibrarymaterialsareproperlycheckedout.
3.Allowthepatrontoexitthelibrary.
Manypatronswilllearnfromtheexperienceandwillnotcarryitemsthatmaycausealarmsintothelibrary.
Alarmlog
Thealarmlogisusedtokeeparecordofdetailsinvolvingalarmsthatoccur.SeetheDetectionsystemalarmlogformonpage15.
Foreachalarm,recordtheinformationinthelog.Keepingthislogup-to-dateprovidesakeytoolformonitoringsystemactivity.
Anup-to-datealarmlogprovidesusefulinformationforlibrarymanagementandyour3Mservicerepresentative.
Tip:Ifpatroncountisaconcern,usetheAlarmlogfrequentlytorecordpatroncount.Thepatroncounteroneachlatticeisbacked
upbybatterypowersoitwillnotresettozeroanytimepowertothesystemisshutoff,disconnected,orotherwiseinterrupted
