1 Basic information
1.1 Intended use
The atomic absorption spectrophotometer contrAA 600 is a PC-controlled instrument for the
sequential trace detection of metals and non-metals in liquid and dissolved samples. The
contrAA 600 is a High-Resolution Continuum Source atomic absorption spectrometer for
graphite tube technique and HydrEA technique. It is used for the sequential trace detection
of metals and non-metals in liquid and dissolved samples.
Combined with an autosampler the contrAA 600 can be used as a multi element automat in
routine analysis. First, the elements of interest are calibrated. For this purpose, the calibra-
tion standards and then also the samples are processed sequentially. This means that the
results of all elements to be determined are available after every sample measurement.
All device settings, such as spectrometer settings and furnace programs for electrothermal
atomization, are performed automatically in accordance with the method parameters and
may vary from element line to element line. The ASpect CS control software based on the
Windows operating system assumes the complete instrument control of the base instrument
and the accessories as well as data recording and evaluation. The determination of the
analytic background also occurs automatically and simultaneously on the analysis line. The
control software contains default settings for the methodical set-up of an analysis line. The
prefabricated line parameter settings for all measurable elements of the periodic chart (also
called cookbook) provide an introduction to the field of analytics and can provide a basis to
create one's own multi-element methods. The control software includes comprehensive
presentation and storage options for measured signals and parameters, GLP-suitable log-
ging as well as different options for keeping quality control charts.
1.2 User manual notes

2 Safety instructions
For your own safety and to ensure error-free and safe operation of the contrAA 600, please
read this section carefully before using the appliance.
Comply with all safety instructions in the manual and pay careful attention to all messages
and notes which are displayed on the screen by the control software.
Also observe the safety instructions for system components by other manufacturers supplied
with this device (e.g. PC, printer, autosampler). It is particularly important to comply with the
safety instructions on the labels as well as the information on handling, storage and disposal
of the reagents.
2.1 General safety instructions
PROPER USE!
The contrAA 600 may only be used for atomic absorption spectrometry in the techniques
described in this manual.
LOCAL REGULATIONS!
Observe the local safety regulations that apply to the use of this device (e.g., work protection
regulations, accident prevention regulations, safety regulations).
References to potential dangers in the manual do not replace the work protection regulations
which must be observed.
PERSONNEL!
The contrAA 600 may only be operated by qualified personnel, who have received additional
training for this type of work. Familiarization with the contents of this manual and the acco
m-
panying manuals of accessories a
nd system components must be included in this training.
Any work on electrical equipment may only be carried out by qualified electricians.
WARNING! PROTECTION AGAINST EXPLOSION AND FIRE
The contrAA 600 may not be operated in an explosive environment.
No smoking is allowed in the operating room of the contrAA 600.
INSTALLATION AND INI
TIAL USE
The device may only be assembled, installed and repaired by the service engineers from
Analytik Jena AG or by technical personnel authorized by Analytik Jena A
G. Any unauthor-
ized interference may place the operator in danger or endanger the functional safety of the
instrument and limits warranty entitlements.

INSTRUMENT SHUTDOWN
IN CASE OF DANGER!
In an emergenc
y, switch off the contrAA 600 using the power switch right side wall. Discon-
nect the mains plug from the mains socket.
Switch off the installed components using the mains switch of the connected socket strip.
Ensure that the socket strip is positioned in s
uch a way that it allows quick access.
Caution!
For the PC there is a risk of data loss and damage to the operating system!
ELECTRIC SHOCK!
The contrAA
600 is supplied with electrical voltage. Life-threatening electrical voltages occur
at various locations within the system!
The mains plug may only be connected to a proper CEE power socket to ensure that the
device meets protection class I (ground connector). The protective effect must not be inval
i-
dated by the use of
an extension line which does not have a protective conductor (→
Section
"
Energy supply" p.19).
The contrAA
600 must be switched off before carrying out any electrical work, the mains plug
must be pulled out. Safe disconnection from the mains can only be achieved by pulling out
the ma
ins plug. Power is still supplied to certain areas of the spectrometer, as well as the
output socket, after the device has been switched off at the main switch.
The removal of the rear panel of the device may only be carried out by the customer service
of
Analytik Jena AG and specially authorized technicians.
Only Analytik Jena service engineers or specially trained electrical staff may open any co
m-
ponents of the instrument, especially the xenon lamp housing.
CAUTION! SHORT CIRCU
IT CAUSED BY WEARING JEWELRY
There is a risk of a short circuit occurring between the two parts of the furnace, or between a
furnace part and the console. Short
-circuited jewelry heats up quickly and can cause burns.
No metallic jewelry (especially around the neck) may be worn during working on and with the
contrAA 600. Otherwise there is a risk of causing a short circuit of the electrically heated
graphite tube.
CAUTION! OPERATING S
UBSTANCES, DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES
The operator is responsible for the selection of substances used in the process as well as for
their safe handling. This is particularly important for radioactive, infectious, poisonous, corr
o-
sive, combustible, explosive and otherwise dangerous substances.
When handling dangerous substances local safety instruction
s and guidelines must be
observed.
Observe the notes on the labels!
Only use clearly marked containers and wear protective goggles and rubber gloves!
The contrAA
600 may only be operated under an active laboratory exhaust hood (ozone,
combustion gases give
n off by the sample, poisonous and combustible by-products from
sample preparation processes).
Biological samples have to be handled according to local guidelines regarding the handling
of infectious material.
Warning! Sodium borohydride
(NaBH4) is strongly corrosive, hygroscopic and, in solution,
extremely aggressive. Avoid dripping and spilling of reduction agent.

The operator is responsible for ensuring that waste materials, e.g., sample residues, are
disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner
and according to local regulations.

This list is in so far incomplete that other solvents could also come into consideration for use
in the contrAA 600 in the HydrEA technique. In cases of uncer
tainty about an un-named
fluid, this may only be used when the manufacturer has confirmed that there is no danger to
safety.
CLEANING AND DECONTA
MINATION MEASURES
The operator is responsible for carrying out suitable decontamination should the device be
c
ontaminated externally or internally with dangerous substances.
Spots, drops or larger spillages should be removed and cleaned using an absorbent material
such as cotton wool, laboratory wiping cloths or cellulose. The affected areas are then to be
wiped w
ith an Incidin Plus solution.
For cleaning the interior of the contrAA
600, the operator is responsible for establishing
appropriate safety precautions
– particularly in terms of contaminated and infectious materi-
als.
Before another cleaning or decontamina
tion procedure is used as that prescribed by the
manufacturer, the user shall check with the manufacturer that the intended procedure will not
damage the device.
Safety signs attached to the contrAA
600 must not be wetted with methanol!
DANGER OF
EXPLOSION! XENON LAMP AND LAMP HOUSING
Inside the quartz flask of the xenon lamp, there is an overpressure of 2 Pa which may rise to
up to 7 MPa during operation!
The lamp housing may only be opened by the customer service of Analytik Jena AG and
speciall
y authorized technicians.
CAUTION! UV RADIATIO
N AND RISK OF DAZZLING
Protect your eyes!
Never look directly at radiation from the xenon lamp or at the heated graphite tube without
UV protection glasses.
The xenon lamp in particular emits an intense l
ight in the visible range and the UV range!
Never use a hand mirror to observe the drying process of liquid samples in the graphite tube
furnace in the beam path!

CAUTION! OZONE FORMA
TION
The UV radiation of the xenon lamp and the graphite tube furnace at temperatures over 2000
°C lead to an interaction with the surrounding air to form toxic concentrations of ozone e
x-
ceeding the permissible limit.
The contrAA
600 may only be operated with an active exhaust unit.
CAUTION! OPERATING P
RESSURIZED GAS CYLINDERS AND GAS
PLANTS
Inert gas and additional gas are taken from pressurized gas cylinders or local gas plants.
For gas cylinder or gas plant operation, the safety instructions and guidelines which are valid
at the operating location must be strictly c
omplied with.
High pressure tubing and pressure reducers may only be used for the assigned gases.
The operator must carry out weekly safety checks for leaks on all gas supplies and connec
t-
ors and at the device itself. Possible pressure drops in closed, pre
ssurized systems and
piping must be determined. Leaks must be localized and repaired immediately.
After changing the gas cylinder, thoroughly ventilate the cylinder location.
CAUTION! HIGH TEMPER
ATURES
During graphite tube furnace operation high temper
atures occur.
Observe the required cooling times!
Do not touch the hot components during, or directly after, a measurement.
Undertake maintenance work and change components only after an adequate cooling per
i-
od: Graphite tube furnace, cell, lamps.
Keep all
combustible material away from the device.
VENTILATION
Ensure that the ventilation fittings for contrAA
600 and its auxiliary devices are in proper
working order. Covered vents or ventilation slits may cause the device to break down or may
cause damag
e to it.
MAINTENANCE
Service, maintenance and repair work on the contrAA
600 may only be carried out by service
engineers from Analytik Jena AG or by technicians authorized by the manufacturer. Exce
p-
tions to this are described in Section "
Care and maintenance" p. 54. If these requirements
are not complied with, there is a serious risk of misalignment or da
mage to the device.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
OF THE GRAPHITE TUBE TECHNIQUE!
Use only the inert gas specified in the manual for the graphite tube technique.
Do not look into the graphite tube opening without wearing protective goggles. Sputtering
sample
substances and hot graphite particles may cause eye and face injuries.

Only use replacement parts from Analytik Jena AG.
The graphite tubes of the contrAA
600 are manufactured specifically and may only be or-

ered from Analytik Jena AG. Do not use any other graphite tubes. The contrAA
600 may be
damaged.
SENSITIVE ELECTRONIC

Always electrically connect and disconnect components to/from the contrAA
600 when they
are switched off. This also applies when elec
trically connecting components with one anoth-
er.

EC directives
The contrAA 600 is built and tested according to standards that fulfill the requirements
stipulated by the EC directives 2006/95/EC and 2004/108/EC. Each device leaves the manu-
facturer in a pristine and technically safe state. To maintain this condition and to ensure safe
operation, the operator must strictly observe the safety and operating instructions contained
in this manual. For accessories which have also been supplied, and system components
from other manufacturers, their operating instructions should be referred to.

THE DEVICE!
The device may only be assembled, installed and repaired by the service engineers from
Analytik Jena AG or by technical personnel authorized by Anal
ytik Jena AG. Any unauthor-
ized interference limits warranty entitlements.
When setting up assistance is needed for part of the time. The service engineer will test the
device and document the test in the test report of the contrAA 600.
The operator is responsible for everything (e.g., parts, guidelines) that is not included in the
original delivery, but is necessary for operation of the contrAA 600. Operation of the con-
trAA 600 demands certain local and system-specific requirements:

Possible dangers when working with the contrAA 600 are:

4.1 Environmental conditions
Do not set up the contrAA 600 directly beside a door or a window. The work space of
the contrAA 600 should be free of draft, dust, corrosive vapor and also vibrations.
Do not set up the contrAA 600 close to any electromagnetic source.
Avoid direct sunlight and heater radiation on the contrAA 600. In extreme cases,
provide acclimatized conditions in the room.
