When you register with a service provider, you
receiveaSubscriberIdentityModule(SIM)
card.YourphonemusthaveaSIMcardinorder
tomakecalls.TheSIMcardisacomputerchip
that contains your phone number, phonebook
information,andserviceproviderinformation.
Handleitwithcareanddonotbenditorexpose
ittostaticelectricityordirt.Besurethepower
to your phone is off before you insert your SIM
card.
The SIM card and the microSD™cardslotsare
situatedunderneaththebattery.
1. Slidethecoverinthe
directionofthearrow.
Liftandsetitaside.
2. InserttheSIMcard
andslideitintothe
holderuntilitts.The
goldcontactsofthe
SIMcardshouldface
down and the notched
edgeshouldbeonthe
topleftcorner.

3. InsertthemicroSD™
cardandslideitinto
theholderuntilitts.

Charging the battery
Ittakesafewhourstofullychargeabattery
forthersttime.Forbestbatteryperformance,
allowthebatterytochargeanddischarge
completelytherstfewtimesyouuseit.
In charging
When the phone is turned on, the animation on
theupperrightcornerofthescreenwillindicate
thechargingprogress.Thephoneisworkable
when the battery is charged, but it may take
twicethetimetofullychargethebattery.
Whenthephoneisturnedoff,theanimationwill
appear on the screen to indicate the charging
progress.Thephonecanbeturnedonforuse
whenthebatteryischarged.
Low battery indicators
The battery indicator on the upper right corner
of the screen indicates how much charge
remainsinthebattery.Whenthebatteryislow,
thephonewillbeepandthemessage“battery
low”willappearonthescreen.
NOTE:Ifthebatteryhasbeendeeplydischarged,itmaytake
thebatterylevelindicatorseveralminutestodisplay.
Turning the phone on/off
To turn the phone on:
• Flipopenthephone.
• Hold down the power/end Holddownthepower/end keyuntil
thescreenlightsup.
If needed, enter your SIM card PIN code
andpresstheEnterkey.
To turn the phone off:
• Press the power/end keyandhold
untilthephoneshutsdown.
NOTE:IfyousetanalarmusingtheOrganizermenu,thenturn
offthephone,thephonewillturnitselfonwhenthealarmis
activated.Afteryoudisablethealarm,thephonepromptsyouif
youwanttokeepthephoneturnedonoroff.SeetheOrganizer
sectionfordetailsaboutsettinganalarm.
CAUTION:
• UseonlythebatteriesandchargersapprovedbyASUSor
elsedamagemayoccurtothemobilephone.
• Youcanalsochargethebatterybyconnectingthephoneto
acomputerusingthesuppliedUSBcable.

Standby mode
When your phone is on, but not in use, it is in
standbymode.Duringstandbymode,theupper
partofthedisplayscreenshowsvariousicons.
Thetimeanddatearedisplayedatthelower
centerofthescreen.Underthedateandtime
are MenuontheleftcornerandNames on the
rightcorner.Presstheleftsoftkey to view
the main menu, and the right soft key to view
thephonebook.
The Standby screen icons and their

Using the menu
To view the main menu, go to standby mode,
thenpresstheleftsoftkey orenterkey.
Followthesetipstonavigatethroughthemenu
andmenuoptions.
• Usetheup,down,left,andright
navigation keys to move through the
variousmenuitems.
• Theupperpartofthescreendisplaysthe
nameofthemenuitemcurrentlyselected
whilethelowerrightcornerdisplays
Back.Presstheleftsoftkey or the
enterkeytoselectthemenuitem.Press
the right soft key underBacktoexit
themenu.
• Beloweachmenuitemisasmall
number.Youcanalsoselectthemenu
item by pressing the corresponding
numberonthekeypad.
• Toquicklyexitfromthemenu,pressthe

submenuitemsandoptions.Youcan

key to open various options in some
submenus.

restoreallsettingstotheirfactory
defaultfromthismenu.
Camera:Enablesyoutotake
picturesaswellasrecordvideowith
yourphoneandorganizethem.You
canalsoeditimagesfromthismenu.

Text entry
When you add names to your phone book,
send a text message, or use your WAP
browser,youneedtoentertext.Yourcellphone
hasseveraltextentrymethods.Youcanenter
lettersindividuallyorwithpredictivetextentry,
whichhelpsyoucompletewordsasyouenter
them.Youcanenterlettersinuppercase,lower
case,orboth,orinsertsymbols.
Basics
• Usethealphanumerickeypadtoenter
lettersandnumbers.Eachkeyis
assignedmultiplecharacters.
• PresstherightsoftkeytoselectClear
onthelowerrightcornerofthescreento
deletealetterifyoumakeamistake.
• Toenterspacesorsymbols,pressthe
key.Thesymboltableisdisplayed.
Usethenavigationkeystohighlighta

Choosing text entry methods
From any text entry screen, such as a text
messagewindow,selectOptions > Input
Method.
ABC input
ABCinputenablesyoutoenterindividual
lettersonebyone.Thisisidealforaddinga
phonebookentryorenteringaWAPaddress.
When you press a key, the characters assigned
tothekeyappearonthescreen.Pressthekey
repeatedlytoscrollthroughthesecharacters.
Pauseforamomentandtheselectedletter
appearsonthescreen.Forpractice,trycreating
atextmessage(SMS)asfollows:
From the menu, go to Messages > SMS >
Write Message.Beforeenteringtext,press
Options > Input Method,andselectABC
Input.
Toenterthewords“myphone”intothetext
entryarea,followthesesteps:
1. Press6toselectm.
2. Press9threetimestoselecty.
3. Press0followedbyOKtoenteraspace.
4. Press7to enter p, then press 4twice to
enter h.Continueinthisfashionuntilthe
word“phone”isentered.
Smart Abc
Smart Abc is a predictive text entry method,
whichusesabuilt-indictionarytopredictthe
wordyouaretyping.Youcanchoosethe
correctwordbypressingthekeysrepetitively
andscrollingthroughthewordssuggested
bythephone.Byreducingthenumberof
keystrokes,thesmartAbchelpssomeusersto
typemessagesmorequickly.
Wheneveryoupressakey,alistofpossible
characters or character combinations is
created.Toentertext,usetheupand
downnavigationkeystondthecharacter
combinationyouwant.Presstheright
navigationkeyor#keytoproceedenteringthe
nextcharacter.Ifyoumakeamistake,press
Clear.
Hereisanexampleofhowtoentertheword
“baby”usingsmarttextentry.
1. Press2.Theletteraappearsonthe
screen.
2. Press2againquicklytogotothenext
suggestionwhichisba.Ifyoupressthe
up/down navigation keys, the phone

Numeric text entry
Numerictextentryallowsyoutocreatea
textmessagecomposedofnumbers.Touse
thismethod,selectOptions > Input Method
> Numeric.Nowyoucandirectlyinputthe
numbersusingthekeypad.
Symbols text entry
With this method, you can enter various types
ofsymbols.SelectOptions > Input Method >
Insert Symbols.Alistofsymbolsisdisplayed.
Usethenavigationkeystoselectthedesired
symbolandpressOKwhendone.
Switch text input method
SelectOptions > Input Method,orlongpress*
keyinfullscreeneditor.
Transferringlestoa
computer
Connectthemobilephonetoacomputerusing
thesuppliedUSBcable.TheMassStorage
windowappears.PressOK tocontinue.The
phoneshutsdown.
The phone memory appears on your computer
asaremovabledisk.IfthemicroSD™card is
installedinthephone,italsoappearsonthe
computerasaremovabledisk.
Youcantransferlesbetweenthecomputer
andthephoneusingaleviewer,suchas
Windows®ExplorerorMyDocuments.
Forincreasedfunctionality,includingtoolsfor
creating and editing messages, images, music,
and more, use the Handset Manager software
includedinyourpackage.

In the General Download section,
clickSearch.Alistofdownloaditems
appears.Downloadthermwaretoyour
PC.Executethele,thenclickUpgrade.
3. PlugoneendoftheUSBcabletothePC.
Press keyonthehandset,thenplug
theotherendofthecabletothemini-
USBsocketonthehandset.Theupgrade
programwillautomaticallydetectthe
COMportandexecuteitself.
4. Whenthemessage“Burningnished”
appears,clickExit.
