2 Safety guidelines
2.1 Intended use
Programmablelogiccontrollers(PLCs),operating/monitoringdevices(industrialPCs,PowerPanels,MobilePan-
els,etc.),andB&Runinterruptiblepowersupplieshavebeendesigned,developed,andmanufacturedforconven-
tionaluseinindustrialenvironments.Theywerenotdesigned,developedandmanufacturedforanyuseinvolving
seriousrisksorhazardsthatcouldleadtodeath,injury,seriousphysicaldamageorlossofanykindwithoutthe
implementationofexceptionallystringentsafetyprecautions.Inparticular,suchrisksandhazardsincludetheuse
ofthesedevicestomonitornuclearreactionsinnuclearpowerplants,theiruseinflightcontrolorflightsafetysys-
temsaswellasinthecontrolofmasstransportationsystems,medicallifesupportsystemsorweaponssystems.
2.2 Protection against electrostatic discharge
Electricalcomponentsthatcanbedamagedbyelectrostaticdischarge(ESD)mustbehandledaccordingly.
2.2.1 Packaging
•Electrical components with a housing

2.2.2 Guidelines for proper ESD- handling

Thefollowingapplyinadditionto"Electricalcomponentswithhousing":
•Anypersonshandlingelectricalcomponentsordeviceswithelectricalcomponentsinstalledinthemmust
begrounded.
•Componentsmayonlybetouchedontheirnarrowsidesorfrontplate.
•Componentsshouldalwaysbestoredinasuitablemedium(ESDpackaging,conductivefoam,etc.).Metal-
licsurfacesarenotsuitablestoragesurfaces!
•Componentsshouldnotbesubjectedtoelectrostaticdischarge(e.g.throughtheuseofchargedplastics).
•Ensureaminimumdistanceof10cmfrommonitorsandTVsets.
•Measurementdevicesandequipmentmustbegrounded.
•Measurementprobesonpotential-freemeasurementdevicesmustbedischargedonsufficientlygrounded
surfacesbeforetakingmeasurements.
Individual components
•ESDprotectivemeasuresforindividualcomponentsarethoroughlyintegratedatB&R(conductivefloors,
footwear,armbands,etc.).
•TheseincreasedESDprotective measures for individualcomponentsarenotnecessaryforcustomers
handlingB&Rproducts.
2.3 Policies and procedures
Electronicdevicesarenevercompletelyfailsafe.Intheeventofafailureontheprogrammablecontrolsystem,
operating/monitoringdeviceoruninterruptiblepowersupply,theuserisresponsibleforensuringthatotherdevices
thatmaybeconnected,e.g.motors,arebroughttoasafestate.

Whenusingprogrammablelogiccontrollersoroperating/monitoringdevicesascontrolsystemsinconjunctionwith
aSoftPLC(e.g.B&RAutomationRuntimeorcomparableproduct)orslotPLC(e.g.B&RLS251orcomparable
product),thesafetyprecautionsapplyingtoindustrialcontrolsystems(e.g.theprovisionofsafetydevicessuch
asemergencystopcircuits,etc.)mustbeobservedinaccordancewithapplicablenationalandinternationalregu-
lations.Thesameappliesforallotherdevicesconnectedtothesystem,suchasdrives.
Alltaskssuchasinstallation,commissioningandmaintenanceareonlypermittedtobecarriedoutbyqualified
personnel.Qualifiedpersonnelare those familiar with the transport, mounting,installation,commissioningand
operationofthedevicewhoalsohavetheappropriatequalifications(e.g.IEC60364).Nationalaccidentprevention
regulationsmustbeobserved.
Thesafetynotices,connectiondescriptions(typeplateanddocumentation)andlimitvalueslistedinthetechnical
dataaretobereadcarefullybeforeinstallationandcommissioningandmustbeobserved.
2.4 Transport and storage
Duringtransportandstorage,devicesmustbeprotectedagainstunduestress(mechanicalloads,temperature,
humidity,aggressiveatmospheres,etc.).
2.5 Mounting
•Installationmustbeperformedaccordingtothisdocumentationusingsuitableequipmentandtools.
•Devicesmayonlybeinstalledbyqualifiedpersonnelwithoutvoltageapplied.Beforeinstallation,voltage
tothecontrolcabinetmustbeswitchedoffandpreventedfrombeingswitchedonagain.
•Generalsafetyguidelinesandnationalaccidentpreventionregulationsmustbeobserved.
•Electricalinstallationmustbecarriedoutaccordingtoapplicableguidelines(e.g.linecross-section,fuses,
protectivegroundconnections).
2.6 Operation
2.6.1 Protection against touching electrical parts
Tooperateprogrammablelogiccontrollers,operating/monitoringdevicesoruninterruptiblepowersupplies,certain
componentsmustcarrydangerousvoltagelevelsofover42VDC.Touchingoneofthesepartscanresultinalife-
threateningelectricshock.Thiscouldleadtodeath,severeinjuryordamagetoequipment.
Beforeturningontheprogrammablelogiccontroller,operating/monitoringdevicesandtheuninterruptiblepower
supply,thehousingmustbeproperlygrounded(PErail).Groundconnectionsmustbeestablishedwhentesting
operating/monitoringdevicesortheuninterruptiblepowersupplyevenwhenoperatingthemforonlyashorttime!
Beforeturningthedeviceon,allpartsthatcarryvoltagemustbesecurelycovered.Duringoperation,allcovers
mustremainclosed.
2.6.2 Environmental conditions - Dust, humidity, aggressive gases
Theuseofoperating/monitoringdevices(e.g.industrialPCs,PowerPanels,MobilePanels,etc.)anduninterruptible
powersuppliesinverydustyenvironmentsshouldbeavoided.Dustcollectiononthedevicescanaffectfunctionality
andmaypreventsufficientcooling,especiallyinsystemswithactivecoolingsystems(fans).
Thepresence of aggressivegasescan also leadto malfunctions. When combinedwith high temperature and
humidity,aggressivegases–e.g.withsulfur,nitrogenandchlorinecomponents–caninducechemicalreactions
thatcandamageelectroniccomponentsveryquickly.Signsofthepresenceofaggressivegasesareblackened
coppersurfacesandcableendsonexistingequipment.
Foroperationindustyorhumidconditions,correctlyinstalled(cutoutinstallation)operating/monitoringdeviceslike
theAutomationPanelorPowerPanelareprotectedonthefrontside.Therearsideofalldevicesmustbeprotected
fromdustandhumidityandcleanedatsuitableintervals.
2.6.3 Programs, viruses and dangerous programs
Thissystemissubjecttopotentialriskeachtimedataisexchangedorsoftwareisinstalledfromadatamedium
(e.g.diskette,CD-ROM,USBflashdrive,etc.),anetworkconnectionortheInternet.Theuserisresponsiblefor
assessingthesedangers,implementingpreventivemeasuressuchasvirusprotectionprograms,firewalls,etc.and
makingsurethatsoftwareisonlyobtainedfromtrustedsources.

TheAPC510andAPC511arethefirstchoiceswhenitcomestorunningapplicationswheregoodperformance
needstobecombinedwithparticularlycompactdimensions.ThesedevicesarebasedonIntelAtomprocessors,
whichareoptimizedforminimumpowerdissipation.Intheconsumerarea,thismeansextendedbatterylifefor
laptops;forusageinindustrialenvironments,however,thestrengthofAtomprocessorsliesintheirabilitytoreach
theupperendofthetemperaturescalewithoutrequiringtheuseoffans.B&Risabletodrawonmanyyearsof
experienceintheareaofheatbalancing,whichmakesitpossibletooperateevenselectedCore2Duoproces-
sorsfan-free.ThemostimportantfactorconsideredwhendesigningtheAPC510andAPC511waskeepingtheir
