STEP 1.3 (CHECK THE ALIGNMENT OF THE BOSS)
Pull the toner hopper away from the drum unit using the
handle (Figures 1.2).
To release the toner hopper from the drum unit, press the
release button located on the drum unit (Figure 1.1).
While remanufacturing the Brother®HL-3040 toner cartridge, you will need to check the cartridge drive gear boss for
proper alignment or warping (Figure 1.3). IF THE BOSS IS WARPED OR MISSHAPEN, THE CARTRIDGE CANNOT
BE REMANUFACTURED. If you proceed with a cartridge that has a warped boss, the drive side gears will not connect
securely, they will not engage properly and a loud clicking noise will be heard.

Remove the gears from the drive side of the cartridge in the order
shown. Idler drive gear (1), agitator drive gear (2), idler gear (3), and
the toner adder roller drive gear (4) (Figure 2.6).
Remove the cartridge drive gear (Figure 2.4) and check the
boss for alignment.
Use a small slotted screwdriver to release the locking tab on
the underside of the drive side end plate (Figure 2.2).
Remove the flag gear spring and the flag gear (Figure 2.5).
Remove the drive side end plate (Figure 2.3).
On the drive side end plate, remove the two screws as shown
in Figure 2.1.

To remove the developer roller, insert a small slotted screwdriver
into the small opening as shown in Figure 2.10 and gently pry
the white developer roller stabilizer’s locking tab loose.
On the contact side end plate, remove the screw (Figure 2.8).
Remove the developer roller from the cartridge (Figure 2.11)
Remove the contact side end plate (Figure 2.9).
Using a small slotted screwdriver, remove the contact side
developer roller support bearing and spring (Figure 2.7).

Note: Insert a small slotted screwdriver under the contact
side support bearing, then lift up and out to
free the developer roller support bearing from
the cartridge. Remove the spring.
Note: Clean the developer roller with a lint-free cleaning cloth
saturated in 91-99% isopropyl alcohol. Then
use another lint-free cloth with de-ionized water
and blow dry with dry, filtered, ionized compressed air.

Using a small slotted screwdriver, gently fluff the doctor blade
sealing felts so the fibers are standing (Figure 2.15).
Use a lint-free cleaning cloth dampened with 91-99% isopropyl
alcohol to clean any adhesive residue from the doctor blade’s
metal stamping (Figure 2.12B).
Using a small slotted screwdriver, gently pry the doctor blade up
from the cartridge and remove the doctor blade (Figure 2.14).
Remove the three screws on top of the doctor blade (Figure 2.13).
Inspect the doctor blade cover. If wrinkled or damaged, remove
the blade cover from the doctor blade (Figure 2.12A).

Note: To clean the doctor blade, saturate a lint-free
cleaning cloth with 91-99% isopropyl alcohol,
gently clean the black material portion of the
doctor blade. Then clean with a lint-free cleaning
cloth saturated with de-ionized water, then blow
with dry, filtered, ionized compressed air.

Clean the hopper with dry, filtered, ionized compressed air
(Figure 2.19).
Using a small slotted screwdriver, pry the hopper cap from the
top as shown in Figure 2.17.
With a toner vacuum, gently vacuum the adder roller. Rotate
the roller while vacuuming (Figure 2.20).
Using a small slotted screwdriver, gently fluff the developer
roller end felts so the fibers are standing (Figure 2.18).

Rotate the developer roller stabilizer as noted in Figure 3.6A
so the locking tab engages. The completed step will look like
Figure 3.6B.
Install the gears on the drive side of the cartridge in the order
shown. Toner adder roller drive gear (1), idler gear (2), agitator
drive gear (3), idler drive gear (4), and the cartridge driver gear
(5) (Figure 3.4).
Secure the doctor blade into the cartridge with three screws
shown in Figure 3.2.
Install the developer roller into the cartridge (Figure 3.5).
If removed during disassembly, replace the doctor blade cover.
Remove the adhesive backing from the blade cover and align the
blade cover with the back edge of the doctor blade. Ensure the three
screws are centered in the grooves. Apply pressure along the length
of the doctor blade cover to activate the adhesive (Figure 3.3).
Place the doctor blade onto the cartridge (Figure 3.1).

Place the drive side end cap onto the cartridge and ensure that
the drive side support bearing tabs are on the outer part of the
drive side end plate (Figure 3.9).
Place the contact side developer roller support spring and
bearing onto the developer roller axle (Figure 3.8).
Place the contact side end cap and secure with a screw
(Figures 3.7A and 3.7B).

Fill the cartridge using the approved toner (Figure 3.12).
Insert the hopper cap (Figure 3.13).
Secure the drive side end plate with two screws as shown in
Figure 3.11.

The spring should rest on the flag gear. Using a small slotted
screwdriver, press spring down onto the post (Figure 4.3).
Install the flag gear spring as shown in Figure 4.2.

Remove the two screws securing the corona assembly on the
drum unit (Figure 5.1).
On the contact side of the drum unit, locate the white drum axle
locking c-clip. Using a small slotted screwdriver, remove the
c-clip as shown in Figure 5.3.
Slide the green corona cleaning tab to the unlock position to
release the corona as shown in Figure 5.2A. Lift the corona
assembly and remove it from the drum unit (Figure 5.2B).

Remove the spent drum by rotating and pulling upwards
(Figure 5.7).
Clean the drum unit, transfer roller and corona assembly with
dry, filtered, ionized, compressed air (Figure 5.8).
Remove the drum axle from the drum unit (Figure 5.6).
Remove the white locking retainer and black stabilizer ring
from the drum axle and set them aside.
Use a small, slotted screwdriver to press the tab on the locking
bearing (Figure 5.4A) and remove the bearing using needle
nose pliers (Figure 5.4B).

After applying fresh conductive lubricant in the area shown in
Figure 6.4, place the drum axle locking clip onto the drum and
slide the axle into the contact side of the drum.
Place the drum into the drive side of the drum unit first
(Figure 6.2).
Before installing the drum, ensure the stabilizer ring
is positioned correctly on the drive side (Figure 6.1A).

Using a Phillips screwdriver, secure the corona assembly onto
the drum unit with two screws (Figure 6.7).
Place the drum stabilizer ring onto the drum axle (Figure 6.5A) and
then snap the locking retainer onto the drum axle (Figure 6.5B).
Place the corona assembly onto the drum section (Figure 6.6A)
ensuring the tabs are aligned. When done correctly, the corona
assembly will seat flush to the rest of the drum unit (Figure 6.6B).

Return the corona wire cleaning tab to the locked position by
aligning the arrows as shown in Figure 6.9.

OPTIONAL
1. Press + or - to choose Machine Info. Press
OK.
2. Press + or - to choose Reset Parts Life.
Press OK.
3. Press + to choose Drum Unit. Press OK.
4. Press + or - to choose the drum color that
was replaced. Press OK twice.
For Multi-Function Copiers (MFC) and
Digital Copier Printers (DCP)
1. Power the printer on.
2. Press MENU, 6, 4
3. Press OK and then press + or - to choose
the color cartridge that is installed.
Press OK
4. Press 1to reset the drum unit counter.
5. Press STOP / EXIT
For MFC 9120CN and 9125CN:
1. Power the printer on.
2. Press MENU, 5, 6
3. Press OK and then press + or - to choose
the color cartridge that is installed.
Press OK
4. Press 1to reset the drum unit counter.
5. Press STOP / EXIT
For MFC 9010CN and DCP 9010CN:
1. Power the printer on.
2. Press MENU, 8, 4
3. Press OK and then press + or - to choose
the color cartridge that is installed.

Drum Reset Instruction (OPTION # 2):
Note: Always reset the drum counter on a
Brother HL-3040/3075CN printer after
replacement. However, this reset may
be performed at any time. There are four
drum cartridges in a printer: black, cyan,
magenta and yellow. Each drum has its
own drum counter.
1. Power the printer on.
2. Press + or - to select MACHINE INFO ...
3. Press OK to proceed to the next menu.
4. Press + or - to choose RESET PARTS LIFE.
5. Press OK and then press + or - to choose
DRUM UNIT.
6. Press OK and then press + or - to choose the
color cartridge that is installed.
7. Press OK twice.

COLOR CALIBRATION PROCESS
OPTIONAL
Perform the calibration from the control panel of the printer:
The Color Calibration Process is recommended when
replacing toner cartridges:
1. Press + or - to choose COLOR CORRECTION. Press OK.
2. Press + or - to choose COLOR CALIBRATION. Press OK.
3. Press + or - to choose CALIBRATE. Press OK.
4. When the message OK appears on LCD, press OK.
Note: The printer automatically adjusts the color density
after calibrating from the control panel of the
printer. Do not calibrate using the printer driver
or from the status monitor.
