Read these operating instructions carefully before you use
the Büchi Rotavapor R-3000. Keep these instructions in a
safe place close to the Rotavapor for quick reference whenever
required. Do not plug in the Rotavapor to the main power
supply and do not turn the instrument on until you have
completed all the essential preparations.
Chapter 2 contains important notes concerning safety. It is
imperative to read these notes in order to operate the Rota-
vapor safely.

2 Safety
This Rotavapor is built in conformance with the state of
engineering and the recognized rules of safety. Nevertheless,
it can still be a source of risks and hazards:
• if used by persons with insufficient training
• if used for purposes other than that for which it is intended.
2.1 Symbols
Stop
Information about hazards which can lead to serious material
damage or cause serious or potentially fatal injury.
Warning
Information about hazards which can be harmful to your health
or lead to material damage.
Please note
Information about technical requirements. Non-observance
can lead to malfunctions, inefficiency and lost production.
2.2 Requirements to be met by the customer
The Rotavapor must not be operated by any persons who
lack the training or professional experience to comprehend
the hazards that can arise when using the Rotavapor.
Personnel without such training or persons currently
undergoing a course of training require thorough instruction.
These operating instructions should form the basis of this
instruction.
2.3 Proper use
The Rotavapor is designed and built for laboratory service. It
is intended to be used on jobs involving the evaporation and
subsequent condensation of solvents.
The Rotavapor is used for:
• the distillation of solvents
• the concentration of solutions and suspensions
• the synthesis and purification of fine chemicals
• the drying of powders and granules
2.4 Improper use
Any use other than those already listed, and any application
that does not conform with the technical data is deemed to
be a case of misuse. The customer shall bare sole responsibility
for any damage owed to such misuse.

The following applications in particular are prohibited:
• Use in hazardous-duty or explosion-proof rooms.
• Work involving overpressure.
• Production or processing of explosives of all kinds.
• Processing of hard samples (stones, soil samples, etc.)
that can cause the destruction of the evaporation flask.
• The use of heating sources other than the water bath.
2.5 General hazards
General hazards arise from:
• hot water in the heating bath.
• solvents which can form peroxides.
• solvents with low ignition, flash and/or explosion tempe-
ratures.
• mixtures of unknown composition or with impurities.
• combustible gases or solvent vapors in the direct vicinity
of the rotary evaporator.
• damaged glassware.
• electrostatic discharges when decanting solvents.
• electrostatic charges when drying powders.
2.6 Safety measures
These operating instructions are to be considered a part of
the Rotavapor. They must always be kept at the point of use
so that operating personnel can consult them at any time.
This applies likewise to copies in other languages, which can
be ordered separately (see Chapter 1, Scope of delivery).
The customer shall notify the manufacturer immediately of
any incidents involving safety aspects while using of the
Rotavapor.
Personal safety items such as goggles and a laboratory
coat must be worn.
There is risk of scalding when replacing hot evaporation flasks.
This can be prevented by wearing suitable gloves.
The use of optional Büchi safety devices such as PLASTIC+
GLAS coated glass components and safety shield will protect
the user in the event of an accident.
2.7 Modifications
Modifications are only permitted after consulting with the
manufacturer and obtaining his written consent.
Use only the recommended standard glass apparatus. Examine
glass components for any signs of damage before each use.

You are allowed to install and remove only those specific parts
of the Rotavapor that are so designed to enable it to perform
its function. You can do so either by hand or with the tool
supplied with the Rotavapor. Apart from authorized maintenance
personnel, no one needs to remove any safety devices and
covers with a standard tool.
2.8 Safety elements
Electrics
• The Rotavapor is equipped with a fuse.
• The bath is equipped with an overtemperature cut-out.
Operation
• Levelling screw for uneven standing surfaces.
• Combination clip for fastening the evaporation flask and
for safely releasing tight glass joints between (evaporation
flask and vapor tube).
• Ball joint clamp to securely fasten the collection flask.
Glassware
• Use of high-grade, inert type 3.3 borosilicate glass.
• Threaded GL14 hose connections to prevent glass
breakage.
Optional
PLASTIC+GLAS is a unique protective coating for glass
components. It improves mechanical resistance to break-
age and increases protection against glass splinters. It also
prevents loss of solvent from the collection flask should it
be damaged.
The proved safety shield will protect the user from glass
splinters in the event of an ex- or implosion.

3 Function
3.1 Terms
In these operating instructions you will come across a number
of terms which require explanation.
Glass assembly A: diagonal condenser
Glass assembly V: vertical condenser
Glass assembly C: cold-trap
PLG: PLASTIC+GLAS is a unique protective
coating for glass components. It improves
mechanical resistance to breakage and
increases protection against glass splinters.
3.2 Functional principle
The rotary evaporator is used to carry out single-stage distilla-
tions at high speed and low stress. The process is based on
the evaporation and condensation of solvents using a rotating
evaporation flask. Distillation can be performed under vacuum
as well as under atmospheric pressure.
The following description is based on glass assembly V, for
example:
햲Evaporation zone
The solvent in the evaporation flask is heated by the hot
bath. The rotating evaporation flask generates intensive
turbulence in the flask contents and forms a thin film of
solvent on the inside surface of the flask. This combination
of turbulence and film prevents local overheating and gua-
rantees a high rate of evaporation.
햳Rotary drive
The drive unit ensures uniform rotation of the evaporation
flask.
햴Cooling zone
The solvent vapor flows at high speed into the condenser.
This is where the solvent vapor´s energy is transferred to
the cooling medium (e.g. water) – the solvent condenses.
햵Collection flask
The collection flask is used to collect the condensate.
햶Vacuum connection
The solvent´s boiling temperature can be lowered by applying
vacuum. This results in a lower thermal load thus reducing
stress on the product.
The efficiency of the evaporator is influenced by the pressure
of distillation (vacuum), the temperature of the heating bath,
the speed of rotation and the size of the evaporation flask.
For details of how to select the optimum distillation conditions,
see Chapter 5.3, Selecting the conditions of distillation.

4 Putting into operation
4.1 Unpacking
Open the boxes carefully so as not to break any glass! Keep
the original packaging in a safe place in case you ever want
to move the Rotavapor.

4.2 Point of use
The Rotavapor must stand on a firm, horizontal surface. Minor
irregularities can be compensated with the levelling screw.
The Rotavapor is not suitable for use in hazardous-duty rooms.
4.3 Quick-lift
The levelling screw can be adjusted to prevent the rotary eva-
porator from wobbling on an uneven surface.

4.4 Heating bath
Operate the bath with tap water or a 1:1 mixture of tap water
and distilled water.
Never remove the heater from the bath until it has cooled
(risk of burning). Only the inside of the water bath is heated
during operation.
Insert the bath into the base plate.
4 Putting into operation
Hang the heating element in the bath and plug it into the
Rotavapor.

The heater is equipped with an overtemperature cut-out.
Should this cut-out be triggered, you can re-activate the heater
by pressing the reset pin.
4.5 Sealing system
Assemble the complete sealing system in the order specified
(numbered), to prevent from destroying of the seal..
Seal KD-22 is subject to certain wear and needs to be replaced occasionally.
To prolong the life of this seal, observe the following points:
• Examine regularly.
• Clean only with soapy water or alcohol.
• Never apply grease.
• Never touch with any sharp objects.

4.6 Glass assemblies
All the ground-glass joints should be greased for optimum sealing
of the system.
Use only glassware that is in perfect condition and shows no
signs of damage. Examine the glassware each time before use.
The various types of glass assemblies are illustrated in Chapter
8, Replacement parts.
• The condenser can be fastened without having to remove
the union nut. Simply undo the nut just enough to push the
flange through.
• The collection flask must be secured with the ball joint clamp.
• The evaporating flask must be secured with the combi-clip.

4.7 Combi-clip
The patented combi-clip performs the following functions:
A Holds the evaporating flask
B Releases the evaporating flask
C Removes out a tight vapor duct
(Hold the vapour duct by hand)
D Holds non-Büchi evaporating flasks
(clip in positioning hole 2)
4.8 Hose connections
General
• Hoses with an internal diameter of ~6 mm for connectors
with a GL14 union nut
Vacuum
• Keep the vacuum hoses as short as possible
• It is advisable to install a woulff bottle between the vacuum
source and the Rotavapor. The woulff bottle will prevent
solvent or solids from passing directly into the pump and
will prevent water from getting into the rotavap or when
using water-jet pumps

4.9 Electrical connections
Make sure the voltage of the socket-outlet is the same as
the value marked on the rating plate.
Always connect the Rotavapor to grounded-outlet. External
couplings and extension cables must incorporate a protective
conductor. The protective conductor must never be interrupted
as this can cause the Rotavapor to become «live».

5 Operating the Rotavapor
Make sure that the Rotavapor was installed correctly as per
the instructions in Chapter 4, «Putting into operation».
If the power switch is turned on, all functions will be active as
soon as the power plug is inserted. To prevent damage, set
the rotation controller and the heater to «0».
5.1 Controls

The rotation is infinitely variable between 20 and 240 rpm.
햴Heating temperature controller
The bath temperature is infinitely variable between 20 and
90 °C
햵Heating pilot lamp
This indicates when the heater is on.
햶Quick-lift handle
Turn counter clockwise to unlock the lift to move down
and up.
Hot liquid may be splashed out of the bath as the rotating
evaporation flask is moved into and out of the bath. You should
stop the rotation, therefore, before immersing or removing
the flask.
5 Operating the Rotavapor
5.2 Performing a distillation run
In the following section we shall describe how to start, optimize
and end a distillation run on the basis of a checklist.
1. Rotavapor fully installed
All the electrical connections correct (power cable, heater).
All the seals properly installed.
All the ground-glass joints greased.
Evaporation flask attached.
2. Evacuate the Rotavapor to test for leaks.
Leak test as described in Chapter 6.2, Function test (< 3
mbar pressure rise/min.).
3. Set heating bath to 60 °C
4. Water in bath has reached a temperature of 60 °C
5. Cooling water
Have cooling water flow through the condenser at a rate of
approx. 40–50 l/h and at a temperature not higher than
20°C

6. Start the evacuation process
Select the pressure so the boiling point of the solvent is
40 °C (see solvent table in Chapter 5).
Feed in the solution through the inlet stop cock. Customers
with a C-assembly must introduce the sample into the
evaporating flask before evacuation.
Set the rotation.
Use the quick-lift to lower the flask into the bath.
1 to 2 minutes after the set vacuum level is reached
distillation should start.
If it does not start, you will have to make operating adjust-
ments (lower the pressure or raise the bath temperature).
Ideally the condenser should be utilized between 2/3 and
3/4 of its capacity.
7. If the distillation slows down
Change the collection flask to rule out any risk of reverse
evaporation. Then continue the distillation as described in
point 6 (without drawing in more solution). Repeat this
process until all the solvents are distilled as required.
8. To finish
Stop the rotation, raise the flask out of the bath and aerate
the system (Aerate the system at a vacuum controller, or
at the stop cock.)
If you do not want to carry out the next distillation run
immediately, switch off the heating bath to save energy.

5.3 Selecting the conditions of distillation
Rule of thumb
For optimum conditions of distillation, the energy transferred
to the distillation from the bath must be removed again by the
condenser. To guarantee this relationship it is advisable to
apply the following rule of thumb:

How do you obtain these conditions?
• Have the cooling water (no warmer than 20 °C) flow through
the condenser at a rate of around 40–50 l/h
• Select the working vacuum so the boiling point of the sol-
vent is 40 °C. Consult the following solvent table for the
corresponding pressure.
• Set the bath temperature to 60 °C.
Advantages of a bath temperature of 60 °C
• You can handle the evaporation flask without risk of scalding
• Water does hot evaporate from the heating bath at such
a high rate
• The heating bath energy is utilized at a good level of
efficiency
Optimization of the distillation
Do not make any adjustments until the heating bath reaches
a temperature of 60 °C.
Depending on the solvent to be distilled, it may be necessary
to optimize the distillation by making certain adjustments. The
goal must be: Condensation of solvent between 2/3 to 3/4 of
the available condensing coils.
Basically there are two ways to optimize the distillation:
1. Slowly lower the pressure further (increase the vacuum)
This lowers the boiling point (and hence the vapor tempe-
rature) and raises the DT2 value. The result is a higher
efficiency of distillation.
or
2. Raise the bath temperature
This also raises the DT2 value (resulting in a higher efficiency
of distillation). At the same time, however, raising the bath
temperature increases the amount of heat loss from the
bath due to the bigger differential between the bath tem-
perature and the ambient temperature.

6 Maintenance
Compulsory inspections and maintenance
All regulations aimed at keeping the Rotavapor in good working
order must be observed. They include cleaning the Rotavapor
at regular intervals and examining it for any signs of damage.
6.1 Cleaning and inspecting
Heating bath
Clean the bath with household detergent. If necessary, clean
the heater with anti-liming agent.
Glass components
Wash the glass components with commercial detergents (e.g.
a mild soap solution). Remove stubborn dirt (e.g. algae) from
inside the condenser coils with suitable cleaning agents
(if necessary, allow glassware to soak in the cleaning solution).
After cleaning and completely drying the glass components,
you must examine each item for signs of chipps or cracks.
The glass components of rotary evaporator are under vacuum
when in use – it is important, therefore, to carry out this visual
examination conscientiously!
Vapor duct
Follow the same procedure as for the other glass components.
Vacuum gasket KD-22
Examine the seal and replace with a new seal if signs of severe
wear are discovered.
• You will prolong the life of the seal by rinsing it and drying
with a soft cloth. This will also prevent condenser solvent
from entering into the drive unit.
• Clean the seal and glass components regularly, especially
after bumping and foaming defervescence and working
with crystalline products.
• Do not tilt the seal when fitting or removing it. Always move
it on the glass component at the axis of rotation. Do not
damage the sealing lip.
• Do not apply grease to the seal (fine abrasion and grease
act like grinding paste).
Housing
Clean the housing with a damp cloth but no detergents.
Examine also for defects (controls, plug).
Hose connections
Examine the hose connections and replace with suitable new
hoses if you discover any signs of cracking or brittleness.

6.2 Function test
Regular function checks will reduce the risk of your Rotavapor
breaking down and will prolong its useful life. We recommend
carrying out such a test once every three months.
Assemble the Rotavapor with dry and solvent-free glass com-
ponents.
Vacuum tightness
Evacuate the Rotavapor to at least 200 mbar with the flask in
rotation.
Close the connection from the vacuum source to the system
(e.g. clamp the vacuum hose). If the unit is vacuum-tight, the
rise in pressure per minute will amount to less than 3 mbar. If
the values are higher than this, check the glass connections
and the KD-22 seal.
Adjustability of the speed of rotation
Turn the controller for the speed of rotation slowly from the
minimum to the maximum setting (in clockwise direction). The
motor should rotate without interruption in every position of
the controller.
Bath temperature control
The bath must be properly controlled at every temperature.
The heat up time should not exceed 15 minutes.
6.3 Replacing the quick-lift spring
If the spring in the quick-lift should ever break, you can replace
it without any difficulty.
Never open the quick-lift when the evaporator is in the down
position because the spring is under tensioned.
1. Move the quick-lift to the maximum up position.
2. Remove the cover plate from the quick-lift (one slotted
screw).
3. Extend the quick-lift by around another 4 cm.
4. Un-hook the spring 햳.
5. Move the quick-lift upwards until the guide 햲is at the top
end of the rod (no further !). Now pull the pin 햴out of the
spring holder.
6. Take out the spring and replace with a new one. Reinsert
the pin.
7. Move the quick-lift down slightly until you can hook the
spring in place again.
8. Lower the quick-lift.
9. Reattach the cover plate on the quick-lift.

6.4 Service
Only authorized service technicians are allowed to service
the Rotavapor. They have undergone thorough professional
training and are acquainted with the hazards that ensue from
ignoring the safety precautions.
Büchi service centers have a model-specific service manual
that is supplied only to authorized personnel. The addresses
of Büchi service centres are listed on the back cover of this
operating instruction manual. Please contact the centre
nearest you if you have any technical questions, problems
with an application or trouble with your Rotavapor.
You are welcome to contact the Büchi customer service
center for:
• Spare parts service (please quote the item numbers printed
in the operating instructions)
• Repair and maintenance service
• Technical consulting
7 Taking out of operation
All hoses and electrical connections must be disconnected
before transporting the Rotavapor.
The bath, the glass components and the quick-lift must each
be transported separately. If you want to transport the quick-

it could raise up unexpectedly.
The Rotavapor must be emptied of any harmful substances
and cleaned thoroughly (Chapter 6.3, Cleaning and inspecting).
This will rule out all risk of persons suffering injury from harmful
materials.
7.1 Storage/Transportation
The Rotavapor should be stored in a dry place in its original
packaging. Also use the original packaging for any further
transportation.
7.2 Disposal
Every large component is marked with a material codey. It is
imperative to observe your regional and local laws and regu-
lations concerning the disposal of waste materials.

The Rotavapor’s operational safety and serviceability are only
guaranteed by original Büchi accessories. The use of other
makes of replacement parts and accessories is only permitted
with the express consent of the manufacturer.
The replacement parts catalogue may only be used in conjun-
ction with Chapter 5 and 7 of these operating instructions for
installation and dismantling purposes. Third parties are not
allowed access to or possession of this manual. The use of
this manual for production purposes is prohibited. Copyright is
