1 Safety instructions
1.1 General safety instructions
The product has been manufactured according to
the generally recognised rules and standards of
technology and complies with the legal regula-
tions in force when it was brought into circulation.
Nevertheless, there is still a risk of damage
to persons or property if you do not follow
this chapter and the safety instructions in this
documentation.
● Read this documentation carefully and in its en-
tirety before working with the product.
● This documentation must be kept accessible to
all users at all times.
● Always hand over the product to third parties to-
gether with the full documentation.
● Follow all of the instructions in relation to the
proper handling of the product.
● If you detect damage to the product or the mains
supply, stop its operation and notify a service
technician immediately.
● Use only accessories, spare parts and con-
sumable materials that have been approved by
BWT.
● Adhere to the environmental and operating con-
ditions specied in the “Technical data” section.
● Use your personal protective equipment. It en-
sures your safety and protects you from injury.
● Perform only tasks that are described in this op-
erating manual or that you have been trained to
do by BWT.
● Carry out all activities in accordance with
all the applicable standards and regulations
(VDI 3810, DVGW worksheets, EN 1717
TrinkwV, DIN EN 806, DIN 1988, VDI 6023.
● Instruct the operator in the function and opera-
tion of the product.
● Instruct the operator in the inspection, mainte-
nance and proper operation of the product.
● Instruct the operator in relation to potential dan-
gers that may arise while operating the product.
1.2 Scope of the documentation
This documentation applies exclusively to the
product whose production number is listed on
the title page and in chapter “17 Technical data”,
page 79.
Keep yourself up to date with regard to any legal
changes and resulting changes for the operation,
inspection and maintenance of the 2nd-genera-
tion Rondomat water softening unit. You can find
the latest applicable version of the documents on
the BWT Wassertechnik GmbH website.
This documentation is intended for operators, end
users, fitters without training from BWT, fitters
with training from BWT (e.g. drinking water spe-
cialists), and BWT service technicians.
This documentation contains important informa-
tion for safely handing over the product to the op-
erator and properly fitting, starting up, operating,
using, maintaining and disassembling the product,
and for correcting simple faults independently.
Read this documentation in full before working
with the product. Pay particular attention to the
safety instructions chapter.

1.3 Personnel qualications
The installation work described in this manual
requires basic knowledge of mechanics, hydrau-
lics and electrical systems as well as knowledge
of the corresponding specialist terms.
To ensure that the device is installed safely, this
work must be performed only by a qualified spe-
cialist or a trained person under the guidance of a
qualified specialist.
A specialist is someone who can assess the
work assigned to him or her, identify potential
risks and take suitable safety measures thanks
to his or her specialist training, knowledge and
experience as well as his or her knowledge of the

applicable regulations. Specialists must comply
with applicable, industry-specific regulations.
A trained person is someone who has been
instructed by a qualified specialist in the tasks
entrusted to them and the potential dangers of
improper conduct and, if necessary, trained and
instructed on the necessary protective equipment
and protective measures.
1.4 Transport and installation
Transport the product as a complete unit, if
possible. If the product has to be dismantled for
transport, check the completeness of the individ-
ual parts.
If there is a risk of frost, drain all components that
convey water.
Lift or transport the product or its components
only from the designated suspension eyes or
attachment points, if provided on the product.
The product must be installed or mounted on a
sufficiently stable and level vertical or horizontal
base and sufficiently protected against falling or
overturning.
Installation space requirements:
● The installation space must be protected against
frost.
● If the softened water is used as water for human
consumption as dened in the German Drinking
Water Ordinance (“Trinkwasserverordnung”),
the temperature in the installation space must
not exceed 25 °C. If the softened water is used
exclusively for technical applications without
any hygienic requirements (e.g. as feedwater
for heating or steam boilers), the temperature of
the installation space must not exceed 40 °C. In
this case, a safeguard to prevent microbial con-
tamination in the inlet water must be provided
(see the specications of EN 1717 for more in-
formation).
●The installation space must be free from outgas-
sing chemicals, dyes, solvents and vapours.
● The installation site must be at; the installation
dimensions for the 2nd-generation Rondomat
water softening unit must be observed.
● The installation space must be equipped with a
oor drain. If there is no oor drain, a protective
device must be provided to prevent water from
escaping accidentally.
● A protective lter with appropriate dimensions
must always be installed upstream from the wa-
ter softening unit.
●The power for the 2nd-generation Rondomat wa-
ter softening unit is supplied through a socket.
The socket requires a continuous power supply.
The electrical connection cable for the 2nd-gen-
eration Rondomat water softening unit controller
must not be shortened.
● To drain the rinsing water from the 2nd-gener-
ation Rondomat water softening unit, a DN 50
waste water connection at minimum is required.

In the following sections, you will find prod-
uct-specific safety instructions whenever you
must perform certain safety-relevant actions on
the device.
1.8 Important notes on water-
softening units
The instructions and requirements in this docu-
ment are differentiated according to the product’s
area of application as well as the laws, regu-
lations or standards on which they are based.
A distinction is made between legal requirements,
normative requirements and requirements for
proper use. Instructions that are only relevant
for one area of application are identified as such
according to the following table.

regenerative is used.
Section 4 of the German Drink-
ing Water Ordinance requires
compliance with the generally
recognised rules of technology in
the design, assembly, installation,
operation and maintenance of
the unit.
Using treated drinking water with plants and
aquatic animals
Each species of plant and aquatic animal requires
water that contains a special combination of
substances. Users of the unit should therefore
consult the subject literature and check that they
can use retreated drinking water for watering
plants or for filling ornamental lakes, aquaria or
fishponds.
1.9 Denitions
Inflow water: Drinking water quality of the local
water supplier. Depends on the region and is
described using the degrees of hardness soft,
medium or hard.
Softened water: Softened water, usually with
water hardness of 0 – 9 °dH.
Outlet water: The water leaving the softening
unit.
Luxury water: Outlet water with the manufac-
turer’s recommended water quality setting of
4–8 °dH for non-technical applications according
to EN 806.
Blended water: The product mixes (blends) fully
softened soft water with inflow water to attain the
desired outlet water.

Fully softened water: Water treated by the prod-
uct with no added inflow water.
Fully softened water for technical applications is
< 0.1 °dH
1.9.1 Microbiological and sensory quality of
the (partially) softened water

tamination and consequently a
risk of infectious diseases!
Contaminated drinking water due to
improper handling.
►Installation, start-up and maintenance
must be carried out by a qualied spe-
cialist.
►The operator is responsible for ensuring
the intended operation of the product,
maintaining safety and organisational
liability.
The quality of the treated water depends greatly
on the conditions under which the unit is installed
and operated. The most important factors are
listed in the following table.

Use of regenerative in accordance with
DIN EN 973 type A (e.g. 10 kg/25 kg of
BWT Perla tablets).
When determining whether there is a problem with the sensory or microbiological quality of the treated
water, it is important where in the system the quality is measured. For example, if the quality is meas-
ured at the tap, the water quality may be affected by the pipe material or by the presence of a water
heater or hot water storage tank.

3 Intended use
3.1 Proper use
3.1.1 Use in drinking water installations ac-
cording to DIN EN 806 (DIN 1988-200)
This product is intended for the full or partial
softening of drinking and service water. It is also
designed to prevent malfunctions and damage
caused by calcification in water pipes and the
connected fittings, devices, boilers and other
equipment.
The performance specifications of the product
must match the expected usage conditions.
The design should be based on a room data
sheet. The calculation of the expected peak
volume flow is based on the specifications of
DIN 1988-300 and VDI 6003.
For more information, see DIN 1988-200 and
the technical data in this installation and oper-
ating manual (see chapter “17 Technical data”,
page 79).
3.1.2 Technical applications
Technical applications include the softening of
process water, boiler feed water, cooling water
and air conditioning water to minimise malfunc-
tions and prevent damage caused by lime depos-
its in water pipes and connected water-carrying
system parts.
If the product is intended for use outside of
building services, a consultant from the manufac-
turer must conduct a test and issue an approval.
Operation of the product requires regular function
checks and the performance of the maintenance
measures necessary to ensure the safe operating
condition of the product in accordance with the op-
erating conditions required for planning and con-
struction (room data sheet and flow calculation).
3.2 Foreseeable misuse
●Failure to use the product over a longer period of
time (3 days as per VDI 6023).
●Failure to maintain the ambient conditions and
operating conditions (see chapter “17 Technical
data”, page 79).
●Failure to comply with the intervals specified in
this manual for inspection (2 months), mainte-
nance (6 months) and servicing (according to
table “13.1 Intended operation”, page 67).
●The use of unauthorised consumables and
spare parts.
●Set-up and installation that deviate from this
manual.
3.3 Disclaimer
The manufacturer is released from any liability
if the customer intentionally or forcibly removes
guards or safety devices, if the customer modifies
or circumvents the same, or if the customer does
not follow the instructions in this operating manual
or on the system.

4 Function
The product is a duplex water softener that func-
tions using ion exchange.
The product is filled with organic ion exchange
material.
4.1 Operation
● The two softeners contained in the system op-
erate in alternation. Alternating operation serves
to minimise stagnation periods and ensure that
soft water is always available.
● Regeneration is triggered volumetrically (de-
pending on the quantity of water). This means
that no remaining supply of softened water is
discarded during regeneration.
● Regeneration begins immediately if the capacity
is exhausted.
4.2 Regeneration
● The exchange of the hardness forming sub-
stances Ca and Mg ions for Na ions from the re-
generative at the ion exchanger causes the inlet
water to soften. Once an ion exchange column
is exhausted, regeneration starts automatically.
● During regeneration, the ion exchange column
is flushed with brine (water with dissolved re-
generative) and the Ca and Mg ions deposited
are passed into the sewage system.
● A hydraulic level control system measures out
the brine required. The brine volume is meas-
ured by a brine meter. The signal generated here
is then displayed as regenerative consumption
in the operating record in the controller.
● The product is equipped with a device that dis-
infects the ion exchange material during regen-
eration.
● The brine builds up through internal circulation
below the sieve base and is extracted from
there.
● An ultrasonic sensor measures the regenerative
level from a filling level of < 60%.
● 100% regeneration takes place after 72 hours at
the latest for hygiene purposes.
4.3 Regenerative monitoring
The fill level in the regenerative container is moni-
tored by an ultrasonic sensor with two stages.
4.3.1 Regenerative low pre-alarm: 0 to 60%
The regenerative container is equipped with an
ultrasonic sensor. If the regenerative level in the
container falls below a level of 60%, the value is
signalled in 10% increments.
If the level falls below 20%, a pre-alarm is sent to
the system controller.
4.3.2 Regenerative empty message
An additional float switch issues a signal as soon
as there is no more solid regenerative in the
regenerative container.
4.4 Multi-info touch display
The product is equipped with a touch display.
It can be operated intuitively and provides a quick
overview of all product parameters.
During start-up, you can select basic parameters
on the display:
● Country-specific settings at the location of
operation
● Unit for measuring water hardness at the loca-
tion of operation (°dH, °f, mol/m3, ppm calcium
carbonate)
● Inlet water hardness (enter manually or input the
value stored in the Hydromaps database for the
location of operation based on the postal code
of the system location)
● Current flow volume in l/h (fully softened water)
NOTE
►It is not possible to compare the dis-
played volumes with a domestic water
meter, because the quantity of blended
water is added to the quantity of fully
softened water from the product to ob-
tain the outlet water quantity (= volume
ow through the water meter).
● Water consumption per day, month or year.
● Regenerative fill level
see “4.3 Regenerative mon-
itoring”, page 13.
● Reminders for filter backwashing, filter replace-
ment and other inspection and maintenance
work.

4.5 Interaction and connectivity

4.6 Safety
4.6.1 AQA Safe function
Stops the outflow of flushing water to the waste
water pipeline and replenishment in the regen-
erative container in the event of a power failure.
This prevents any connected waste water pump
system from flooding if the power fails.
4.6.2 AQA Watch alarm function
The activatable AQA Watch alarm function
monitors the volume flows that flow through the
product using the product's water meter. In the
messages, a message is sent if a flow rate less
than 60 l/h is available for a period of more than
10 minutes.
4.7 Insulation
The EPP insulation material is HBCD free and
meets the fire protection requirements according
to EN 13501-1 E as well as the requirements of
DIN 1988-200:2012-05, 14.2.6.
When the water is stagnant, the insulation slows
down the rate at which the temperature of the
water in the unit adjusts to the ambient tempera-
ture. Depending on the type of unit, the tempera-
ture takes around 5 to 10 hours longer to come to
equilibrium with insulation than without insulation.
Insulation shifts the range in which condensation
forms on system components (particularly metallic
components), e.g. 15 °C / 60% relative humidity
to 32 °C / 60% relative humidity.
5 Installation conditions
5.1 General
The product must be installed as described in the
installation guide in compliance with the general
requirements for the supply of water in Germany
[“AVB Wasser”] V, section 12.2 by a water supply
company or by a party registered in the water
supply company’s index of fitters.
Observe all applicable local installation regula-
tions, general guidelines, sanitary requirements
and technical specifications.
5.2 Installation locations and
environment
● The installation space must be protected against
frost.
● If the softened water is used as water for human
consumption as defined in the German Drinking
Water Ordinance, the temperature in the instal-
lation space must not exceed 25 °C.
● If the softened water is used exclusively for
technical applications without any hygienic re-
quirements (e.g. as feedwater for heating or
steam boilers), the temperature of the installa-
tion space must not exceed 40 °C. In this case,
a safeguard to prevent microbial contamination
in the inlet water must be provided (see the
specifications of EN 1717 for more information).
●The installation space must be free from outgas-
sing chemicals, dyes, solvents and vapours.
● The installation site must be flat; the installation
dimensions for the 2nd-generation Rondomat
water softening unit must be observed; for in-
spection and maintenance, an additional work
area around the plant must be maintained.
● The installation space must be equipped with a
floor drain. If there is no floor drain, a protective
device for preventing water from escaping acci-
dentally must be provided UPSTREAM from the
water softening unit in the direction of flow.
● A protective filter with appropriate dimensions
must always be installed upstream from the wa-
ter softening unit.
● The power for the 2nd-generation Rondomat
water softening unit is supplied through a
socket. The socket requires a continuous power
supply.
● The electrical connection cable for the 2nd-gen-
eration Rondomat water softening unit controller
must not be shortened.

● To drain the rinsing water from the 2nd-gener-
ation Rondomat water softening unit, a DN 50
waste water connection at minimum is required.
NOTE
►A connection to the sewage system, a
oor drain and a separate mains con-
nection (100–240 V/50–60 Hz) must be
located in the immediate vicinity.
If there is no floor drain, a separate safety device
must be installed on site upstream from the soften-
ing unit in the direction of flow.
The safety device (an external protective device
consisting of humidity sensor and normally closed
shut-off device) must shut off the water supply
when there is no current to prevent unintentional
water leakage from the water softening unit if the
product is damaged.
NOTE
►The water supply for any re protec-
tion system must always be connected
upstream from the water softening unit
and upstream from any other safety
equipment!
The rated mains power (see chapter “17 Techni-
cal data”, page 79) and the required operating
pressure must be maintained at all times. A
separate means of protection against a shortage
of water is not provided and must be installed on
site if desired.
5.2.1 Installation conditions with pump
If the flushing water is fed into a pump, the pump
must be appropriately equipped and sized:
● The pump must be resistant to brine.
●Pump capacity: at least 3 m3/h or 50 l/min for
products in the Rondomat range.
● If used simultaneously for other products, the
pump must be larger.
5.2.2 Reception conditions at the
installation location
In order to benefit from the connectivity of the
product, either GSM reception or integration
into a home network via LAN or Wi-Fi should be
possible at the installation location (see chapter
“9 Connection” on page 39).
5.3 Inow water
The inflow water must always meet the specifica-
tions of the German Drinking Water Ordinance or
EU Directive 2020/2184. The total dissolved iron
and manganese must not exceed 0.1 mg/l. The
inflow water must always be free of air bubbles.
Install a bleed device if necessary.
The product’s maximum operating pressure must
never be exceeded. If the network pressure is
higher, a pressure reducer must be installed
upstream from the product.
The product requires a minimum operating pres-
sure to function correctly (see chapter “17 Techni-
cal data”, page 79
).
The optimal operating pressure is between 3 and
6 bar.
5.4 Functional and warranty
conditions
Softening units require regular functional monitor-
ing, maintenance and replacement of important
parts based on certain time intervals.
The amounts of metering substance and
regenerative necessary are subject to the level
of consumption, which depends on operating
conditions.
Softening units must be cleaned regularly and
also disinfected if necessary. See this installation
and operating manual for the maintenance inter-
vals. If the outlet water needs to be of drinking
water quality, a maintenance contract must be
concluded to fulfil the general legal duty to main-
tain safety (with the BWT after-sales
service or an
authorised specialist contractor).
During pressure fluctuations and surges, the sum
of the pressure surge and the standing pressure
must not exceed the nominal pressure. The
positive pressure surge must not exceed 2 bar
and the negative pressure surge must not be less
than 50% of the self-adjusting flow pressure (see
DIN 1988-200/3.4.3).
Continuous operation of the softening unit with
water containing chlorine or chlorine dioxide is
possible if the concentration of free chlorine/chlo-
rine dioxide does not exceed 0.5 mg/l.

Continuous operation with water containing
chlorine or chlorine dioxide can lead to premature
ageing if an organic ion exchange material is
used. A softening unit can reduce the concen-
tration of free chlorine and chlorine dioxide. In
other words, the concentration in the outflow of a
softening unit is generally considerably lower than
in the inflow.
In order to benefit from the product’s connectiv-
ity-based features, one of the following must be
present at the installation location:
● GSM signal strength between -40 and -89 dBm
● Wi-Fi signal strength between -20 and -89 dBm
● Network connection with RJ45 socket within
1.5 m
6 Assembly and installation
instructions
The following conditions must be met before the
product can be installed:
● The pipeline network must be flushed.
● You must check whether a mineral metering de-
vice needs to be installed downstream from the
product for the purpose of preventing corrosion.
● Corrosion-resistant pipe materials are used for
installation. Pay attention to corrosion-causing
chemical properties when different pipe mate-
rials are combined (mixed installation), even in
the inflow direction upstream from the product.
● A protective filter must be installed in the direc-
tion of flow 1 m upstream from the product. The
filter must be functional before the product is in-
stalled. This is the only way to ensure that dirt
and corrosive particles do not enter the product.
● Suitable taps for sampling must be installed
upstream and downstream from the product in
accordance with the specifications of VDI 6023.
●The hose on the overflow of the regenerative
container and the flushing water hose must be
routed to the sewer with a downward slope; if
this is not possible, a safe connection to the
sewer must be made using a pump.
● According to EN 1717, the flushing water hose
and the overflow hose must be connected to the
sewage system at a specified distance above
the highest possible waste water level.
The check list must be filled in by the specialist
once assembly and installation are complete;
see “19.1 Installation and assembly checklist” on
page 87 .

Preparing the disinfectant solution
Use the included disposable gloves and protec-
tive goggles to prepare the disinfectant solution.
