1 Introduction
1.1 Euro-500TX Handy technical parameters
Euro-500TX Handy is a portable ECR with following parameters:
• primary power supply external adapter 230 V, 50-60 Hz/24 V,2.08 A
• internal power supply 2× NiMH accumulator 7.2 V, 1,500 mAh
or lead accumulator 6 V, 1,200 mAh
• maximal power input 10 W
• microprocessor system 16-bit microcontroller, 256 kB EPROM, 128 or 512 kB RAM
• memory power backup NiCd accumulator 3.6 V, 60 mAh
• printer thermal, CITIZEN 1320
• cashier and customer displays 1: alphanumerical cashier LCD 2×20 characters and seg-
mented customer LCD
2: 2× alphanumerical LCD 2×20 characters
• keyboard 30 single keys and one double key
1.2 System conguration
The Euro-500TX handy has been designed as a portable ECR. Its most important parameters are low
weight, small size and possibility to operate for a longer period of time without external power supply.
At the heart of the ECR lies the 16-bit microcontroller E-500TXN that features 11 I/O ports and two serial
transfer channels. The ECR programme is stored in 256 kB of EPROM memory. Following the EPROM
programme version, the ECR operates on 128 or 512 kB of RAM.
The system contains:

2 Circuit schemes and functions
2.1 Power supply circuits
2.1.1 External power supply
The switched pulse power supply circuit ONTOP 100-240 V, 50-60 Hz, 24 V/1.5 A, 36 W serves as the
external power supply for the ECR. Its primary function is to produce unidirectional voltage needed for the
proper ECR functionality from the mains voltage.
2.1.2 Primary power supply
The primary power supply serves as the supply of voltage for the +5 V voltage source in the case that the
external power supply is connected. This circuit is built around the MC34063 universal unidirectional vol-
tage changer that guarantees high resistance to the mains interference. Its high efciency (80 %) secures
effective voltage conversion and low heat emissions (low cooling demands). The output voltage is approx.
8.25 V and is marked as VSS in the scheme.
2.1.3 The +5 V power source (VCC) and the NMI signal generator
This power source manufactures the VRAM and VCC voltages. VCC voltage is needed for the circuits that
are at all times powered as the ECR is on. The KA278R05 linear voltage stabiliser is at the heart of this
circuit that xedly supplies +5 V voltage. Figure 2.2 shows the NMI signal generator as well and this circuit
features NCP301 comparator with threshold level 4.5 V. The main use for the NMI signal is that informs
the microprocessor of the voltage drop and is also used to shut down all the power sources. The D4 diode
produces the VRAM voltage, the R9 resistor ensures the constant charging of the BT1 NiCd accumulator
while the ECR is on, and the JP1 jumper is used for ECR clearing. The gure also shows the PWRSW that
is used to connect the main ECR power switch.

2.1.4 The +5 V power source (VCC1)
This power source supplies a group of logical circuits with power. Those circuits are not powered all the
time (printing, serial port transmission, etc… in normal mode) and function from time to time as needed. In
the economy and standby mode this power supply is ineffectual.
2.1.5 Power supply for the printer performance circuits (VH)
This power source is used for the supplying of the printer’s thermal head performance circuits, the step-
-motor circuit, and the produces programming voltages for the scal memory.
2.1.6 Accumulator voltage to the VH voltage converter
The voltage converter is used to produce the VH voltage for the printer’s thermal head performance circuits.
The core element here is the LM2588-ADJ that converts the accumulator voltage to the xed voltage of
23 V. The converter is switched off automatically when the EECR gets connected to the external power
source.

2.1.7 NiMH accumulator charging circuit
The accumulator charging is controlled by the BQ2000 integrated circuit that contains the complete service
and checking of the rapid charging process of the NiMH accumulator. All accumulators are charged using
the constant current of approx. 400 mA and the charging process is nished when the slight drop in accumu-
lator voltage has been detected (a property of the NiMH accumulators when they are fully charged to more
than 0.2 C). The BQ2000 contains also the accumulator temperature protection for safety reasons and the
timer that terminates the charging process if the previous measures should fail.
The connexion with the T4 transistor ensures the total disconnection of accumulators from the other power
source circuits during the charging process so the voltage drop of the fully charged accumulator could be
reliably detected.
2.1.8 Fiscal memory power supply circuits
Special voltages are needed to program and verify data in the scal memory. The circuits shown in the
gure 2.7 produce these voltages.

The ECR Euro-500TX Handy employs the 16-bit microcontroller E-500TXN. This microcontroller fully con-

2.2.2 Memory circuits
The memory used by the microcontroller is divided into the two parts:
• programme memory
• data memory
The EPROM memory with the capacity of 256 kB serves as the programme memory. The data memory is
built on the static RAM memory (68C1000, 66C1024) and is expandable to 512 kB. The programme memory
(EPROM) is activated using the CS0 signal and the data memory (SRAM) is activated using the CS1 signal.
The ECR Euro-500TX handy uses
the ultra low power input memory
circuits that allow the lower power
supply demands and signicantly
prolongs the backup of memory data
using the backup accumulator. The
exchange of said memory circuits
for other types with same capacity
can result in worse performance of
memory operations, increase of the
bus interference, and the memory
back-up time is shorter. It is recom-
mended to use only manufacturer
approved memory circuits.
In order to preserve the data in RAM
memory while the ECR is off, the
RAM memory is backed up from the
reserve accumulator.
Note: The chapter 4.7 describes how
to expand ECR memory to 512 kB.

2.2.3 Start-up and turning off of the system
The two most important states of the system are its start-up and turning off. During the start-up it is neces-
sary to ensure the correct initialisation of the microcontroller and all of the logical circuits. The turning off
conversely requires the saving of all vital data and reliable transfer of the microcontroller and logic circuits
into the safe mode.
The E-500TXN microcontroller connexion is designed so that the E-500TXN is powered from the reserve
NiCd accumulator using the VRAM voltage (current consumption is approx. 500 nA) even when the ECR is
turned off. In order for the system to start up and turn off properly, it is necessary to correctly issue RESET
and STBY (stand-by mode activation) signals. The reset and stand-by controllers handle these signals.
Reset signal controller is a circuit that provides:
• reliable initialisation of the E-500TXN microcontroller during the start-up using the active level of
the RESET signal,
• RESET signal activation during the VCC voltage drop below the circuit threshold level.
The active level of the RESET signal is “log.0”. The active signal level duration is 150 ms minimum. The
threshold level is the voltage level that causes the RESET signal to be generated. This level is very impor-
tant for proper functionality of the logical circuits. The V6309/L circuit that is used in this ECR type has the
threshold voltage value equal to 4.5 V. Voltages below 4.5 V cause the V6309/L circuit to reset the CPU.
Stand-by signal controller is a circuit that provides:
• reliable leaving of the E-500TXN microcontroller stand-by mode during the ECR start-up,
• STBY signal activation in order to turn on the E-500TXN stand-by mode if the VCC voltage drops
to the circuit threshold level.
The active level of the STBY signal is “log.0”. The V6340/F circuit that is used in this ECR type has the
threshold value equal to 4.5 V. If the voltage drops below 4.5 V the V6340/F activates the microcontroller
stand-by mode.
2.2.4 Real-time circuit
The ECR requires the reliable real-time capability i. e. always to retain and calculate the current date and
time. The V3021 circuit provides these functions.
The V3021 circuit contains:
• reader
• shift register
• voltage regulator
• voltage detector
• communication interface
The communication between V3021
and E-500TXN is provided via the
D0 data line and RD and HWR con-
trol signals. The circuit is activated
using the CS2 signal.
The circuit is powered from the re-
serve NiCd accumulator in order to
ensure its functionality even when
the ECR is turned off. Memory back-
-up voltage has to be at least 2.5
V. The real-time circuit consumes
maximum 500 nA from the reserve
accumulator.

2.3.1 Printing control circuits
The Euro-500TX ECR employs the thermal printer CITIZEN LT-1320. For the reliable functioning of the
printer it is necessary to provide control for:
• printing signals for awless print,
• printer step-motor
• journal winding motor

Journal winding motor connexion
Signals ensuring proper functionality and protection of the printer
The thermal printer is tted along with the displays into the interconnect PCB (chapters 4.3 a 7.7) that
serves to connect all the devices located in the removable upper part of the ECR. The interconnect PCB is
connected to the main PCB using two 15-wire cables placed in the ridges along the removable upper part
of the ECR.
2.3.2 Keyboard
The Euro-500TX Handy keyboard consists of 31 keys and is divided into four rows and eight columns. The
sending and decoding the DG0 –DG2 signals from the E-500TXN and reading the ROW1 – ROW4 signals

provide the keyboard functionality. The 7442 decoder circuit decodes the DG0 – DG2 signals and its output
pins 0 – 7 are used to generate the signals for individual keyboard columns. The ROW1 – ROW4 signals
are used to identify the pressed key.
The keys are constructed as the clamping units consisting from plastic covers and silicon rubber with
conductive protrusions made of carbon rubber. As the key is pressed, the pressure transfers to the silicon
rubber that will, thanks to its conductive protrusions, create a conductive connection directly on the keybo-
ard PCB.
The main power switch is also located on the keyboard PCB and is connected into the PWRSW connector
using the 2-wire cable. All other signals between the main PCB and the keyboard are transferred using the
16-wire FCC cable that is plugged into the KEYBOARDCON connector on the keyboard PCB on one side
and plugged into the KEYB connector on the main PCB on the second side.

2.3.3 Displays
The Euro-500TX contains two display units. The cashier display is an alphanumerical LCD and the custo-
mer display is segment LCD. The Greek version of the ECR features both displays (cashier and customer)
as alphanumerical.
Alphanumerical display
The display is controlled by the independent 87LPC762 microcontroller. The 87LPC762 microcontroller
receives the data from the main E-500TXN microcontroller via a serial line that is provided by SEL, CLK
and DATA signals. This microcontroller is located on an individual PCB underneath the alphanumerical LCD
module. The display control signals are described in the table 2.1.
The two-line alphanumerical LCD is backlit by default. One row is able to display up to 20 characters. The
display is constructed as a separate PCB that contains the display itself, the backlight unit, and the display
controller. The backlight option can be controlled using keyboard (press [Multiply] key in “X” mode). Indivi-
dual backlight modes depend from the ECR version. Maximum current consumption due the alphanumeri-
cal LCD backlight is 150 mA and for segmented LCD is 200 mA.
Segment display
It is an LCD with 96 segments. The display control in the ECR is switched using the COM1 and COM2
signals. Every display is equipped with its own NJU6432B controller.
The display units can be optionally tted with the backlight panels (D1) that are controlled by display con-
troller (SEG49, SEG50). The backlight option can be controlled using keyboard (press [Multiply] key in “X”
mode). Maximum single backlight panel current consumption is 250 mA.
The 87LPC762 microcontroller
The ECR Euro-500TX employs the 8-bit 87LPC762 microcontroller that provides the control for LCDs.
