1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
C420 is a modular conventional control panel which can handle from 4 (basic configuration) up to max 20 detection circuits (via
optional circuit modules) where it is possible to connect up to 512 points.
Each circuit covers a zone which can house up to 32 conventional points (the control panel, though, has to be compliant with the
constraint of max 512 total points in the field).
Each zone is permanently associated to a dedicated relay which is activated when the zone goes to alarm condition.
Moreover, the control panel is equipped with the following outputs and relays:
one cumulative alarm relay output
one cumulative siren relay output
one cumulative fault relay output
one programmable relay output activated as a consequence of lack of AC mains or presence of at least one exclusion
one supervised siren output
four supplementary supervised siren outputs, available on an optional module, which can be associated independently of
each other to one or more zones.
The control panel is equipped with an alphanumeric 4X40 display and a 12 keys keyboard. Moreover, an external PS2 keyboard
can be connected to the control panel in order to ease the input during the programming phase.
By using an optional interface card, the control panel can be connected to a remote LCD annunciator which shows the contents of
the display during the monitoring phase and a printer with Centronics interface for event log printing.
The control panel is equipped with an event log able to store up to 1000 events.
Also, there is a clock with battery backup for keeping date and time updated even when the control panel is powered off.
The control panel can house internally two 12V-12Ah (RB1212 type) batteries (sold separately).
1.2 ALARMS AND TYPES OF ZONE
The control panel can switch into the following alarm conditions:
Alarm with siren output OFF
Alarm with siren output ON
Master alarm
Each alarm condition is characterized by the following configuration of outputs and user signalling (LED, buzzer):

The alarm condition of the control panel depends on the alarm condition of the zones and the presence of the master alarm
condition.
Each zone can be in one of the following alarm conditions, depending on its programming mode and the number of points in alarm
condition:
Alarm with siren output OFF
Alarm with siren output ON

The control panel is in the state of :

Master alarm when
othe user pushes the relevant key on the keyboard or a zone programmed to trigger the master alarm
condition goes to alarm with siren output ON.
The alarm condition of the zones and the control panel involves the activation of the zone relays and the supplementary siren
outputs (if present) as follows:
If the control panel is in master alarm condition, all the zone relays and all the supplementary siren outputs are
activated
If the control panel is not in master alarm condition, the alarm condition of each zone is taken into account:
oif the zone is in alarm condition with siren output OFF, the zone relay is activated if it has been
programmed to be activated in this condition
oif the zone is in alarm condition with siren output ON, the zone relay and the supplementary siren outputs
associated to the zone are activated.
Each zone can be programmed in one of the following operating modes:
Single knock
When the zone is in idle condition and the circuit detects an alarm from one or more points, it switches
to alarm condition with siren output ON.
Single knock with
delay (*)
When the zone is in idle condition and the circuit detects an alarm from one or more points, it switches
to alarm condition with siren output OFF and an activation timer starts. When the timer expires, the
zone switches to alarm condition with siren output ON.
Double knock
When the zone is in idle condition and the circuit detects an alarm from one point, it switches to alarm
condition with siren output OFF. When the same circuit detects an alarm from another point, the zone
switches to alarm condition with siren output ON.
Double knock with
delay (*)
When the zone is in idle condition and the circuit detects an alarm from one point, it switches to alarm
condition with siren output OFF. When the same circuit detects an alarm from another point, an
activation timer starts. When the timer expires, the zone switches to alarm condition with siren output
ON.
Hotel (*)
When the zone is in idle condition and the circuit detects an alarm from one or more points, it switches
to alarm condition with siren output OFF and an activation timer starts. If the same circuit detects an
alarm from another point before the timer expires, the residual timer is compared with the hotel reload
timer. If the residual timer is higher than the hotel reload timer, the latter is loaded in the residual timer.
In any case, when the residual timer expires the zone switches to alarm condition with siren output ON.
(*) In the modes with delay, it is possible:
to increment, by pressing the INCREASE DELAY key, the siren output activation timer;
to clear immediately, by pressing the SKIP DELAY key, the siren output activation timer.

2 MONITORING PHASE
The control panel can work in two operating modes: the monitoring phase and the programming phase (described in
the programming manual).
When the control panel is powered on, it goes directly to the monitoring phase and remains in this operating mode until
qualified personnel or the user intervenes.
When the control panel operates in this mode, it monitors the detectors in the field and handles any alarm or fault
notification.
If there is no event ongoing, the display shows the following information:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRST is a group of max 20 letters indicating the status of each of the zones handled by the control panel.
The number of letters shown equals the number of zones currently recognized and handled by the control panel.
Each letter indicates the status of a specific zone/circuit, according to the following information (the letters are the same,
whichever language is selected):
N: NORMAL
I: STATE OF ALARM INHIBITION
W: STATE OF ALARM COMFIRMATION WAITING
a: ALARM WITH SIREN OUTPUT OFF
d: ALARM WITH SIREN OUTPUT OFF AND SIREN ACTIVATION DELAY RUNNING
D: SIREN ACTIVATION DELAY RUNNING AND ACK PRESSED
A: ALARM WITH SIREN OUTPUT ON
F: FAULT
E: EXCLUDED
T: ZONE IN TEST
-: the card which handles the circuit is faulty
UVWXY indicates the status of the max 5 siren outputs.
5 letters will be shown if the expansion card equipped with the supplementary siren outputs is connected and recognized
by the control panel, otherwise one single letter related to the on-board siren output is shown,
Each letter can take on the following values:
E: siren output excluded
N: siren output idle
A: siren output active
S: siren output silenced
F: siren output in fault
-: the card which handles the siren output is faulty

Use the keys UP and DOWN to move the selection pointer along the event types; use the keys LEFT and RIGHT to scroll
the events belonging to the currently selected type.
If no key is pressed for 20 seconds, the display is refreshed and the uppermost two rows (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA +
BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB) show the first active event, based on the following priority:
AL: alarms
GF: general faults
FF: field faults
EX: exclusions
2.1 ALARM DISPLAY
The following alarm types are displayed:
Zone alarm, signalled by one or more points
Master alarm, triggered directly by the user who presses the MASTER ALARM key or by the zone if it has been
properly programmed.
The zone alarm is displayed as follows:
xx: zone/circuit number
yy: current value of the siren output activation delay (if applicable)
S, M, C: additional indicators; if present, they indicate that:
- the alarm has led to the activation of the siren output (S)
- the zone alarm is programmed to trigger the master alarm (M)
- the alarm confirmation option for the zone is enabled (C)

2.2 GENERAL FAULT DISPLAY
The display of a general fault depends on the type of fault and, normally, allows the prompt identification of the cause of the
fault.
Some fault is displayed by using a specific message, whereas others are displayed by using a generic message and a
specific error code.
General fault of a circuit module

The field faults affect the detection circuits and are represented by the following messages:

3 LED INDICATORS –KEYS
3.1 LED INDICATORS
The control panel is equipped with the following LED indicators, used to signal alarm conditions, faults, exclusions, etc.
Each LED is represented by an icon on the front cover of the control panel. Just for convenience, a name is associated to each
LED. This name will be used to refer to the LED throughout the document.

Steady ON: the control panel is power supplied through the AC mains.
Blinking: the control panel is power supplied through the batteries.
Steady OFF: the command and control module is faulty.

GENERAL EXCLUSION
YELLOW
Steady ON: at least one exclusion is present.
This indicator provides a cumulative notification of exclusions.
GENERAL FAULT
YELLOW
Steady ON: at least one fault is present.
This indicator provides a cumulative notification of faults. Further
details on the fault type are provided through the display or dedicated
LEDs.
CPU
SYSTEM FAULT
YELLOW
Steady ON: a system fault is present.
Usually, when this LED is turned ON the CPU stops working properly
because of an hardware problem (e.g., some peripheral stops working
as expected) or a serious malfunctioning of the program.
BATTERY FAULT
YELLOW
Steady ON: a fault or a malfunctioning of the batteries of the control
panel occurs.

3.2 KEYS
3.2.1 Internal keyboard
The table below describes the keys of the internal keyboard of the control panel and their function. An icon on the front panel of the
control panel is associated to each key. Just for convenience, a name is associated to each key as well. These names will be used
throughout the document to refer to each key.

INCREASE DELAY
When this key is pressed, the running activation delay of the siren outputs is incremented
by 1 minute.
The overall maximum value for the delay, composed of the sum between the initial
programmed delay and the delay added through this key, is 10 minutes.
If the passwords are enabled, the user is required to enter the level 2 password.
The usage of this key leads to the storage of an event in the event log.
SKIP DELAY
This key zeroes the running activation delay of the siren outputs.
By pressing this key, the zones for which the delay is running switch immediately to the
alarm condition with siren output ON.
SILENCE/REARM
SIRENS
This key silences the active siren outputs and rearms the siren outputs previously silenced.
If the passwords are enabled, the user is required to enter the level 2 password.
The usage of this key leads to the storage of an event in the event log.
MASTER ALARM
This key triggers a master alarm condition.
If the passwords are enabled, the user is required to enter the level 2 password.
The usage of this key leads to the storage of an event in the event log.
TEST LAMP
This key starts the test lamp procedure, which activates the buzzer and turns all the LEDs
ON simultaneously, for a period of 3 seconds.
If the key UP is pressed during the execution of the test, when it ends the user enters a
screen which makes it possible to regulate the sharpness of the display.
GLOBAL RESET
This key starts the “global reset” procedure. This procedure clears any alarm and fault
event and restores the outputs and relays in idle state.
If the control panel is in the monitoring phase and the passwords are enabled, the user is
required to enter the level 2 password.
The usage of this key leads to the storage of an event in the event log.
If before pressing the GLOBAL RESET key there was any alarm or fault and the causes of
these events are still present after the reset, the events will be detected again.
UP,
DOWN,
LEFT,
RIGHT
Direction arrows, used to move through the menu items and to scroll the list of characters
when entering numbers and strings.
ESC/MENU
If this key is pressed when the control panel is in the monitoring phase, the main menu is
displayed (MENU).
In all the other circumstances, this key is used to leave the screen/menu currently
displayed and return to the previous screen/menu (ESC).
ACK
By pressing this key (this operation is named “event acknowledgement”) the buzzer stops
sounding.
This key is also used to confirm the user input in the menus where numbers and strings are
entered.

3.2.2 External keyboard
A PS2 keyboard can be connected to the control panel. In particular, this keyboard is convenient during the programming
phase, when the user is required to input numbers and strings.
The table below reports the keys used in the PS2 keyboard and the associated function.

This is handled as the ESC function of the MENU/ESC key of the internal keyboard: this key is used to leave
the screen/menu currently displayed and return to the previous screen/menu.
SPACE BAR
This is handled as the RIGHT key of the internal keyboard: typically, it is used to insert a space during the
input of strings.
BACKSPACE
This is handled as the LEFT key of the internal keyboard: typically, it is used during the input of strings to
delete the latest inserted character and bring the cursor back to the previous character.
Alphanumeric
characters
They can be used to enter characters directly during the input of names, numbers, passwords, etc.
SHIFT LEFT,

Activation of capital letters.
CAPS LOCK
Permanent activation of capital letters.
BLOCK NUM
Activation of the numbers on the numeric keypad.
