Status Indicator Overview
Thestatusindicatorenablesyoutoseethescanner’sLEDcolorsandblinkcodesfrommorepositionsand
fromagreaterdistance.Thescanner’sLEDindicatorisswitchedoffwhenthestatusindicatorisinstalled.
Thestatusindicatorissuitableforindoororoutdooruse.
Thelightofthestatusindicatorisvisiblefromallsidesofthescannerexceptthesidewiththetouchscreen.
Thestatusindicatorcanfunctionnomattertheorientationofthescanner—evenifitisupside-down.

Inserting the status indicator
Thescannershouldnotbestoredwiththestatusindicatorinsertedintotheaccessorybay,soyouwillneed
toinsertitbeforeusingthescannerandremoveitbeforestoringthescanner.
1.Checkthegoldplatedcontactpinsofthestatusindicatorbeforeinsertingitintotheaccessorybay.Clean
withadrycottonswabifnecessary.
2.Ensurethatthelaserscannerisswitchedoff.
3.Removetheprotectivecoverfromtheaccessorybayontherightsideofthescanner!.Toremovethe
cover:

a.Thecoverisremovedbypressingdownononesideofthecover(indicatedby!),whichcausesthe
othersidetopopup.

Thermal Protection Covers Overview
FAROlaserscannersarenormallyabletooperateatambienttemperaturesfrom5°Cto40°C(4°Fto
104°F).Thethermalprotectioncoversmakeitpossibletooperatethescannerintemperaturesbetween
40°Cand55°C(104°Fto131°F)andinstrongdirectsunlight.Thecoversprovide:
• shieldingagainstIRradiation
• high-performancethermalinsulationtopreventexcessheatintrusion
• latent-heatabsorberstoremoveexcessheatfromthedevice

Preparing the thermal protection covers
Thecoversmustbepre-cooledinsideaconventionalfreezerbeforeeachuse.Werecommendafreezerthat
canbringthetemperatureofthecoversdowntolessthan-15°C(5°F).Dependingontheinitial
temperatureofthecovers,thisprocesscantakeupto6hours.
NOTE: Formaximumflexibility,werecommendhavingasecondpre-cooledsetofcoversathand.This
allowsquickon-sitereplacementofcoversduringoperationandprovidesoptimumlong-term
performance.
Storing and transporting the thermal protective
covers
Duringtransporttothescanningsite,thecoversneedtobekeptcold(optimum:-15°C(5°F))by
transportingtheminahigh-qualitycoolerequippedwithicepacksorwithactiverefrigeration.

Transportingthescannertoworkingsite
FAROlaserscannersshouldalwaysbetransportedinthedesignatedhard-topcasethatisprovidedwiththe
device.Thisprovidesthebestpossibleprotectionagainstcontaminationaswellasprotectionagainst
heating-upbyexposuretowarmairordirectsunlight.Transportingthescannerinanair-conditioned
environmentof20°Cto25°C(68°Fto77°F)isideal.

Preparing the scanner hardware
• EnsurethatthePowerBlockiscompletelycharged.Werecommendtohaveatleast2fully-charged
PowerBlocksforscanninginextremeconditions.
• Setallscanningparameterspriortoworkingwiththescanneron-site.(E.g.,scanprojectfolders,file
naming,usersettings,etc.;scanresolutionandquality,colorsettings,scanprofile,detectorsettings,
etc.)Thiswillminimizetheamountoftimethatthescannerwillbeexposedtotheenvironment.
Setting up on-site and scanning operation in hot
ambient conditions
Thissectionprovidesdetailsabouthowtosetupthescannerwiththecover.
Setupthetripodatthedesiredscanpositionfollowingallrecommendationsinthescannermanual.
Insertafully-chargedpowerpackintothebatteryslotofthescanner.Ifastatusindicatorispresentinthe
scanner,itshouldberemovedwhilethescannerisswitchedoff.Startthescannerandrecallalldesiredscan
/projectsettings.Afterthisstep,thescannershouldbeinstatusReady for measurement.Ifastatus
indicatorisinsertedintotheaccessorybay,removeitbeforeproceeding.
NOTE: Werecommendyoukeepthescannerinmoderateclimateconditionsduringsystemstartand
parametersettingsbytheuser(20to25°C),forexampleinanair-conditionedcar.
MounttheFARO®FOCUSLaserScanneronthetripodandalignthescanner's“Home”orientationif
required.

5.Afterinstallation,recheckthepositionof
thecover.Ensurethattheinnerrimlineof
thecoverisalignedparalleltotheinner
edgeofthescannerchassis,withanoffset
of3to4mm.Thescannerchassisshould
bevisiblefromallsides.

Afterinstallingboththecovers,thelaserscannerisnowreadyforoperation.
Accessingthelaserscannerwiththethermalprotectioncoverinstalled
AslongastheFAROLaserScannerisexposedtohotclimateconditionsorintensedirectsunlightwith
temperaturesgreaterthan40°C,itishighlyrecommendedtoleavethecoverinstalledoverthefullworking
periodorseriesofscanningmeasurements.Butifyouneedtoaccessthescanner,thecoverfrontfacescan
beseparatelyopenedtoaccessthedisplaypanelorpowerpackandSDcardslot.
Toopenasinglefrontfaceofthecover,pulltheverticalVelcroflapsawayfromthedeviceandliftthefront
face.Forfreeaccesstothescannerinstandbymode,theopenedfrontfacecanalsobeflippedovertothe
topofthescanner.

MaintainingtheFocusscannerandthermalprotectivecoveron-site
Whenexposedtotemperaturesof40°C(104°F)orgreater,theFocuslaserscannerwillgraduallywarmup
duringcontinuousoperation,evenifwhenusingthethermalprotectioncoverasdescribedinthepreceding
sections.
Asaconsequence,repetitivescanoperationundersuchconditionswillbelimitedintimeuptoapoint
wheretheinternaltemperaturecontroloftheFAROLaserScannersendsacriticaltemperaturewarning
message(plusacousticsignal)totheuser.
Atthispoint,thescannermustbeswitchedoffandcooleddown,preferablytothetemperaturerange20°C
to25°C(68°Fto77°F),tore-establishtherecommendedconditionsforcontinuationofscanning
operation.Alsothecovershouldbereplacedatthispoint.
