Overview
Introduction
ThePMC423*isaversatilesixteenportserialcontrollerinPCIMezzanineCard
(PMC)format.SignalingcharacteristicsofeachportcanbecontrolledforRS232,
RS422orRS485operations.Thesignalingprotocolconfigurationisperfour
channels,providingfourindependentconfigurationsettings.Theserialinterfaces
areimplementedusinganOctalUART.Thiscombinescompatibilitywiththe
mostcommonlyusedcomponents(16C550compatibleregisterset),withfull
supportofPCIattributes(e.g.,32‐bitdatatransfers)forincreasedperformance.
Thisallowsrapidintegrationtolegacysystems,whileprovidinganevolutionary
pathforenhancedsoftwaretoimproveperformance.

Tominimizeshockhazard,thechassisandsystemcabinetmustbeconnectedto
anelectricalground.Athree‐conductorACpowercableshouldbeused.The
powercablemusteitherbepluggedintoanapprovedthree‐contactelectrical
outletorusedwithathree‐contacttotwo‐contactadapterwiththegrounding
wire(green)firmlyconnectedtoanelectricalground(safetyground)atthepower
outlet.

Donotoperatethesysteminthepresenceofflammablegasesorfumes.Operation
ofanyelectricalsysteminsuchanenvironmentconstitutesadefinitesafety

1.1 Handling Precautions
CAUTION
Handle the board by the edges or front panel only.
Electronicassembliesusedevicesthataresensitivetostaticdischarge.Someofthe
componentsassembledonGEproductsmaybesensitivetoelectrostaticdischarge
anddamagemayoccuronboardsthataresubjectedtoahighenergyelectrostatic
field.Observeanti‐staticprocedureswhenhandlingtheseboards.Allproducts
shouldbeinananti‐staticplasticbagorconductivefoamforstorageorshipment.
Workatanapprovedanti‐staticworkstationwhenunpackingboards.Whenthe
boardisplacedonabenchforconfiguring,etc.,itissuggestedthatconductive
materialbeinsertedundertheboardtoprovideaconductiveshunt.Unused
boardsshouldbestoredinthesameprotectiveboxesinwhichtheywereshipped.
1.2 Unpacking Procedures
Anyprecautionsfoundintheshippingcontainershouldbeobserved.Allitems
shouldbecarefullyunpackedandthoroughlyinspectedfordamagethatmight
haveoccurredduringshipment.Theboard(s)shouldbecheckedforbroken
components,damagedprintedcircuitboard(s),heatdamageandothervisible
contamination.Allclaimsarisingfromshippingdamageshouldbefiledwiththe
carrierandacompletereportsenttoGETechnicalSupport.
RemovethePMC423fromtheshippingboxandanti‐staticpackaging.Verifythat
itisnotdamagedandthatallitemsarepresentbyreferringtothepackinglist.

1.3 Installation
ThePMCmoduleisnowreadyforinstallation.Installationisdonegenericallyas
withthecommercialversionsofthecard.Followanyspecificprocedures
recommendedbythemanufacturerofthechassisused.Performthefollowing
steps:
1.TurnallsystempowerOFF.
2.Removethehostboardfromthechassis(ifcurrentlyinstalled).
3.LocatethePMCconnectorsonthehostboard.
4.CarefullyplugthePMCmoduleintothematingconnectorsonthehost’s
printedcircuitboard.
5.MakesurethePMCmoduleisseatedproperlyintothecommonmezzanine
card(CMC)connectorsonthehost.
6.UsescrewstofastenPMCtothehostCMC.
7.Removethefourscrewsfromthebottomofthestand‐offsofthePMC.
8.Line‐uptheJ1andJ2connectorsonthehostCMCtotheJ1andJ2connectors
onthePMC.
9.Ensureallconnectorsareproperlyalignedbeforepushingtheconnectors
together.
10.UsethefourscrewstoconnectthePMCstand‐offstothehostCMC.
11.Thechassismaynowbepoweredup.

1.5.1 RS485 Support (SW2-SW12)
TheseswitchesareusedwhenrunningaportinRS485signalingmode.When
runningRS485(halfduplex),thethreeswitchesassociatedwiththeportshould
beClosed.Inallothersignalingmodes,theswitchesshouldbeOpen(seetable
belowforport/switchpositionassignments).
NOTE
The use of RS485 requires use of the correct software interface. Consult the driver manual for the
operating system used for details.

ThePMC423canoperatewiththe32‐bit33/66MHzPCIbus,+3.3Vor+5VPCI
signaling.ThisallowsforthemaximumflexibilityforthedifferentPCIbus
speeds,andsignaling.Thesignalinglevelfortheserialcommunication(RS232,
RS422,etc.)areconfiguredviathesoftware.Thecardgeneratesthenecessary
voltagefortheserialsignalingonboardusingthe+5Vsupply.Thisallowsthe
PMC423tooperatefromthe+3.3Vand+5Vsupplyonly.
TherearetwoeightportserialdevicesthatareafterthePCItoPCIbridgefora
totalofsixteenports.Duetothedensityoftheserialports,thehardware
handshakesignalshavenotbeenroutedtothefrontortherearofthecard.

aSingleBoardComputer(SBC).Efficientlypackagingsixteenchannelsontoa
singlePMCmakeseffectiveuseofthefewPMClocationsavailable.RoutingI/O
totherear(viathe‘J4’connectortothehostcard)enhancesflexibilityin
developingeconomical,andnon‐intrusivecablingsolutions.Eachserialportis
implementedwithanindependentUART(AsynchronousReceiverand
Transmitter)withaseparateprogrammablebaudrate.AccessingtheUART
controllersviaPCI,integratesmoreeffectivelytomodernSBCimplementations
thanproprietaryorlegacydevices.
TraditionalUARTcontrollersarelimitedto8‐bitaccess,incurringallbusprotocol
overheadforeverycharactertransferred(andcontroloperations).TheOctal
UARTutilizedonthePMC423supports32‐bittransfers,allowingfourcharacters
tobetransferredinasinglebusoperation.ReducingprogrammedI/Ooperations
iscriticaltoachievinggoodperformanceinPCIsystems.
Whiletheextendedtransferoptionsofferanopportunitytomaximize
performance,inmanycases,thefirst(andsometimesonly)criteriaaresoftware
developmentandintegration.The16C550registersetdefinitionisincommon
usageforserialI/Odevicesinallenvironments.Maintainingcompatibilitywith
thisdefactostandardcanmarkedlyreducethetimerequiredtointegratethe
PMC423intoexistingsoftwareenvironments.Havingthesoftwareintegration
baseduponearlierdrivesreducestheriskofunexpected(andundesirable)
changesinapplicationinterfaces,whichcanbecriticalwhencreatingan
evolutionaryimprovementofexistingsystems.
