Introduction
The SpartanII 607 drill is an integrated air drill for
seeding and fertilizing production-agriculture crops
only. Every SpartanII 607 drill is designed and built
with care using only quality materials.
This manual covers final assembly of the basic
SpartanII 607 drill, as containerized for export.
All information in this manual is current as of
publication. Information contained within is subject to
change to ensure top performance.
Photos in this manual were not taken during an
actual assembly. Some photos may include parts,
assemblies, and other components that will not be
present at the same point in an actual assembly.
Some components with assembly
instructions in this manual may already be
assembled on your drill.
The drill components are delivered in one or more
standard shipping containers.
Inside the containers, the drill components are on
unpainted steel racks. Major sub-assemblies are
secured to rack tubing. Smaller sub-assemblies,
cartons, bags, and loose components may be on the
rack floors, or inside hoppers.
After the drill is assembled, the racks, and any
fasteners used to secure components to the racks,
are not returned to Great Plains. They may be
salvaged or scrapped.

Tools Required
For identification of components, keep any markings
or tags that record the part numbers.
Two mobile lifters, such as some combination of
forklifts, hoists or cranes, one with a capacity of at
least 2,300 kg.

Safety Information
The safety symbol indicates a potential safety
hazard to persons operating or near the
machine and advises on how to avoid it.
The notice symbol indicates a potential for
machine or property damage from operator
error and advises on how to avoid misuse.
The information symbol indicates useful - but
not crucial - information for machine
operation, assembly, or adjustment.
Before Getting Started
1. Read this manual in its entirety before attempting
to start and operate the machine.
2. Only use operators that are thoroughly trained by
the owner or trained by someone with the
owner’s consent. The operator must be familiar
with all functions of the tractor and attachments,
and be able to handle emergencies quickly.
3. Maintain attention on operation at all times. Do
not operate if using a smart phone, tablet, or
similar electronic device, and never operate
machine while impaired by alcohol, medication,
any controlled substance, or while fatigued.
4. Do not ever allow passengers to ride the
machine at any time, for any reason.
5. Before operation, make sure that all tractor cab
levers are in their neutral positions and that the
parking brake is engaged.
6. Check brakes, link pins, and other mechanical
parts for wear before using machine.
7. Never wear loose or bulky clothing around
machine. Use additional safety equipment, such
as hard hats, eye and ear protection, safety
boots, etc., as needed.
8. Do not modify the machine. Unauthorized
modification can result in unsafe conditions that
lead to machine damage or personal injury.
Operation
1. Always stop the tractor, put in Park and turn off
engine before leaving the cab. Dismounting from
a moving tractor can cause serious injury or
death.
2. Consider turning radius of tractor and implement
in the field. Turning tractor too tight can cause
hitched implement to ride up on wheels which can
result in injury or equipment damage.
3. Pull machine only from the hitch at the end of the
tongue. Never pull from jack stand, safety chain,
or any point other than the hitch.
4. Never leave the tractor cab unattended while the
implement is running. Remove key and turn off
tractor before exiting the tractor cab.
5. Watch your surroundings at all times. Do not
operate with bystanders nearby, and avoid
contacting overhead obstructions.
6. Check that all guards and shields are
undamaged, installed, and secure before
operating implement.
7. Keep children out of the work area. Do not
operate or turn on machine while children are in
the area.
8. Do not operate near ditches, holes, steep slopes,
embankments, or other surfaces which may
collapse under the machine’s weight or tip the
machine over.
9. Never stand between tractor and implement
unless parking brake is applied.

Handling and Disposing of Chemicals
Agricultural chemicals can be dangerous. Improper
use can seriously injure persons, animals, plants, soil
and property.
1. Read chemical manufacturer’s instructions
carefully, and then take appropriate precautions
before use.
2. Wear protective clothing.
3. Wash hands and face before eating after working
with chemicals. Shower as soon as application is
completed for the day.
4. Apply only with acceptable wind conditions. Make
sure wind drift of chemicals will not affect any
surrounding land, people or animals.
5. Dispose of unused chemicals and chemical
waste as specified by the manufacturer. Observe
all the local ordinances and regulations in your
area.
Operation Noise Hazard
1. Use proper ear protection like headphones or
earplugs while working.
PTO
1. Wait until all moving components have
completely stopped before adjusting, cleaning, or
servicing any PTO driven equipment.
2. Before installing or using PTO driven equipment,
read the tractor manual and review the safety
labels attached to the equipment.
3. When operating stationary PTO driven
equipment, always apply the parking brake and
place chocks behind wheels.
4. Stay clear of and never step over any rotating
parts.
Maintenance
1. Understand procedure before doing work. Use
proper tools and equipment.
2. Work in a clean, dry area.
3. Lower the implement. Put tractor in Park, turn off
engine. To prevent unauthorized starting, remove
key before performing maintenance or service
work.
4. If work must be performed with wings raised, set
the wing tilt locks to the road position.
5. Make sure all moving parts have stopped and all
system pressure is relieved.
6. Relieve hydraulic pressure before disconnecting
hydraulic lines or performing any work on the
system.
7. Do not work underneath any hydraulically
supported components. Hydraulics can settle,
leak, or be accidentally lowered. If working
underneath hydraulically supported components
is necessary, secure implement with stands or
suitable blocking beforehand.
8. Disconnect electronic monitor and lighting
harness from the tractor before servicing or
adjusting electrical systems.
9. Before welding, disconnect electronic monitor and
lighting harness from the tractor. Protect hydraulic
lines. Avoid fumes from heated paint.
10. Remove buildup of grease, oil, or debris.
11. Check and replace worn brake lines as needed.
12. Remove all tools and unused parts from
implement before operation.
Tire Safety
1. Check tires for cuts, bulges, and correct
pressure. Replace worn or damaged tires.
2. Tire changing can be hazardous and must be
performed by trained personnel using correct
tools and equipment.
3. Tire explosion and/or serious injury can result from
over inflation. Do not exceed tire inflation
pressures.
4. When removing and installing wheels, use wheel-
handling equipment adequate for weight involved.
5. Tighten wheel bolts only to the specified torque.

High Pressure Fluids
1. Escaping fluid from holes in hydraulic lines is
difficult to spot. Do not use your hands or bare
skin to search for suspected leaks; instead, use a
piece of cardboard or wood. If injured by
escaping hydraulic fluid, see a medical
professional immediately. Exposure can result in
gangrene or severe allergic reaction.
2. Check that hydraulic fittings are tight and all
hydraulic hoses and lines are in good condition
before applying pressure to the system.
3. Wear protective gloves and safety glasses or
goggles when working with hydraulic systems.
Transporting
1. As with transporting any piece of heavy
machinery, comply with all local laws and
regulations before and during transport process.
2. Transport only at recommended transport speed
for implement. Some rough terrains require a
slower speed. Sudden braking can cause a
towed load to swerve and upset.
3. Before towing implement on roads, make sure to
empty out all material from the hoppers or boxes.
4. Know transport height and width of implement.
5. Do not tow an implement that, when fully loaded,
weighs more than 1.5 times the weight of towing
vehicle.
6. Keep clear of overhead power lines and other
obstructions when transporting.
7. Do not fold or unfold the implement while the
tractor is moving.
8. Reduce speed when turning, and make as wide a
turn as possible. Turning tractor too tight can
cause implement to tip over.
9. When towing on a trailer, secure implement with
tie downs and chains.
10. When towing on a trailer, sudden braking can
cause a trailer to swerve and upset. Reduce
speed if trailer is not equipped with brakes.
Safety Chain
1. Use a chain with a strength rating equal to or
greater than the gross weight of towed machinery.
2. Replace chain if any links or end fittings are
broken, stretched or damaged.
3. Do not use safety chain for towing.
Safety Lights and Devices
1. Always use safety lighting. Slow-moving tractors
and towed machinery can create a hazard when
driven on public roads. They are difficult to see,
especially at night.
2. If equipped, use flashing warning lights and turn
signals whenever driving on public roads.
3. Use safety devices provided with implement.
4. Keep safety lights and signs clean and visible from
front and rear of machine.
5. Keep lights in operating condition.
Shutdown and Storage
1. Park the tractor and implement on a solid, level
surface where children normally do not play.
2. Fold and tilt wings.
3. Put tractor in park or set the parking brake. Turn
off engine and remove switch key to prevent
unauthorized starting.
4. Wait for all components to come to a complete
stop before leaving the operator’s seat.
5. Turn lockout valve and wing lock levers to locked
position to prevent the wings from lowering.
6. Detach the tractor. Secure the implement using
blocks.
Proper Waste Disposal
1. Dispose of waste properly to avoid threatening
the environment and ecology. Potential harmful
waste includes oil, fuel, filters, and batteries.
2. Use a leak-proof container for draining fluids. Do
not use a food or beverage container that may be
mistaken for a consumable product.
3. Do not drain or pour waste onto the ground,
down a drain, or into any water source.
4. Contact your local environmental or recycling center
for the proper way to recycle or dispose of waste.

Unloading
Falling or Sliding Hazard
Make sure to center fork truck or chains
(overhead hoist) on components so they
will not slide and cause injury.
Choose an appropriate work surface. Be sure the
truck is on solid, level ground. Work is made easier if
the ground is concrete.
The illustration below shows suggested rack unload
clearance.
Allow for forklift access from any direction, and final
tractor hitching. Allow for forklift and tractor turns.
The drill components are provided on four racks.
Remove the racks from the container. Position them
clear of the assembly area.

maneuver components up to the machine to
assemble.

Cart Assembly
Unload Cart Frame
Crushing and Roll-Away Hazards
The tire/wheel assemblies are heavy. They
can stand on their own, but are easily
tipped over and can roll away. Use a hoist,
rather than a forklift to prevent tire tipping.
Remove all loose components from the floor of the
cart rack. Release and remove any held on by straps
or ties. Leave secured any parts held by u-bolts.
1. Position the hoist or lift to support a wheel.
2. Remove the four nuts (1), bolts and washers that
secure a cart wheel (2) to the rack. These
fasteners are not used again.
3. Move the cart wheel to a secure spot where the
cart wheel cannot fall over or roll away.
4. Repeat the procedure for the other cart wheel.
Position a hoist or lift to support the cart frame.
Attach lines to shipping eyebolts provided on the
mating flanges for the tongue.
5. Remove u-bolts (3) that secure the rear of the
cart frame to the lower rack mounts. These
fasteners are not used again.
6. Remove u-bolts (4) that secure the right-hand
side of the cart to the mid-height mount. These
fasteners are not used again.
Pinch or Crush Hazard
The cart frame can move as the next
fasteners are loosened.
7. Remove u-bolts (5) that secure the right-hand
side of the cart to the tallest mount. These
fasteners are not used again.
8. Lift the cart frame free of the stand. Move the cart
frame to the center of the assembly area.
The following procedure usually requires two lifters.
Lowered from a single lift, the cart tends to settle on
its rear.
9. Use the second lifter (6) to pull the rear of the cart
frame away from the first lifter.
10. When the frame is near level, position two
support stands (7) to support the front of the cart.
Keep the support stands clear of the tongue
flanges. Secure the support stands to the cart
frame if possible.
11. Lower the cart frame onto the support stands at
front, and onto the cart wheel hubs at rear.
12. Remove the shipping eyebolts at the front lift
points. These eyebolts are not used again.
The figure shows stands not shipped with
the drill.

Unload Hopper(s) and Meter(s)
1. Open a hopper lid(s). Remove the strainer(s) (1).
2. Remove and save all materials shipped inside
hoppers.
Removing materials at this time reduces
the weight of the hopper frame, and
provides easier access, as the hopper lids
are closer to the ground.
3. Return strainer(s) to hopper(s). Secure lid(s).
4. Hoppers may have seated or straps may have
stretched in transit. Check hopper strap tension
before dismount and installation.
To adjust, tighten nuts on tensioning bolts (2)
until straps cannot slide side to side on hopper
face (3), then tighten nuts two additional turns.
5. Before freeing the hopper frame, note which is
front and back on the hoppers. At the lids, the
handles are in front, and the lid pivot is in back.
6. Remove and save eight sets of 1/2 inch bolts (4),
flat washers, lock washers, and nuts.
7. Run two or more lines outside the hopper frames
and toward the outer side of dual-hoppers.
Hopper / Tank Damage Risk
Use straps long enough to prevent chain
contact with hoppers, tanks, or frame. If
this is not possible, cushion the chain at all
points of contact.
8. Lift the hopper frame clear of the rack. Transport
the hopper frame to the cart frame location.

Install Diverter/Transition to Cart
1. Position the diverter/transition assembly
(150 or 151) at the center rear of the cart.
Make sure the diverter and actuator are facing to
the rear of the cart.
2. Secure the assembly to the cart mainframe (1)
with four bolts (187), flat washers (240), lock
washers (239), and nuts (218).
Mount Hopper Frame on Cart
1. Lower the hopper frame assembly onto the cart
frame. The hopper frame support channels (3) fit

If the hopper frame does not fit, the frame
may be reversed front-to-back.
2. Secure the hopper frame to the cart frame with
the hardware saved when unloading the hopper
frame.

Install Walkboard Extension (Single-Hopper)
All drills are equipped with a main walkboard. A
walkboard extension must be installed on
single-hopper drills.
1. If installed, remove the handrail mount weldment
(129) from each end of the walkboard and the
end handrail weldment (131) from the right-hand
end of the walkboard. Keep all parts for
re-installation later.
2. Install the extension center mount (161) to the
center walkboard mount. Loosely secure with two
bolts (186), lock washers (238), and nuts (217).
3. On the left-hand side, install a ladder mount (155)
to the ladder mounting weldment (2). Secure with
round-head bolts (198), lock washers (238), and
nuts (217).
Install the other ladder mount to the right-hand
walkboard mount with two round-head bolts, lock
washers, and nuts.
4. Install the end extensions (160) to the ladder
mounts. Position the extensions with the slotted
hole (1) on top as shown. Loosely secure with
round-head bolts (198), flat washers (236), lock
washers (238), and nuts (217).

5. Loosely attach the narrow walkboard
extension (159) at each end to the new
mounts (160, 161) with bolts (193), flat washers
(236), lock washers (238), and nuts (217).
6. Loosely attach the narrow walkboard to the main
walkboard with bolts (193), flat washers (236),
lock washers (238), and nuts (217) at holes (3).
7. Tighten all newly installed nuts to finger tight.
8. Adjust mounts and narrow walkboard as needed
to eliminate gaps. Tighten nuts to torque
specification (see page 67).
9. On the left-hand side, install the handrail mount
(129) and gas spring mount (163) onto the end
extension (160). Secure with two bolts (198), flat
washers (236), lock washers (238), and nuts
(217).
Make sure the handrail mount is positioned
so the tube is toward the drill center with
the through-hole on the bottom.
Install End Handrail and Ladder Grab Rail
1. On the right-hand side, install the end handrail
(131) to the walkboard mount with two bolts
(193), flat washers (236), lock washers (238),
and nuts (217).

2. Install the handrail mount (129):
Single-hopper drills - Install between the
end extension (160) and the handrail mount
bracket (1).
Dual-hopper drills - Install between the
walkboard mount and the handrail mount
bracket (3).
3. Secure with two bolts (198), flat washers (236),
lock washers (238), and nuts (217).
Make sure the handrail mount is positioned
so the tube is toward the drill center with
the through-hole on the bottom.
4. Insert the ladder grab rail (162) into the mounting
tube bracket on the mainframe ladder.
5. Secure with bolt (208) and lock nut (222). Tighten
nut only until bolt head is snug against mounting
tube bracket. Do not tighten to torque
specification.
6. Install the tube cap (310) on the top of the ladder
grab rail.
7. Install the edge trim (305) on the handles for the
mainframe ladder.
Install Ladder
1. Install the ladder weldment (134) to the
mainframe ladder.
2. Secure with two bolts (188), flat washers (250),
and lock nuts (224). Make sure to install the two
flat washers between the ladder weldment and
the mainframe ladder.

3. Install gas spring (386) and secure to the gas
spring mount and ladder weldment with two
flange nuts (227).
Install Front Handrail and Gauge
4. Remove nuts (2) from handrail cross tubes on the
right-hand side only. Set aside for re-installation
in step 7.
5. With the decal side to the front, insert the
handrail assembly (3) into the handrail
mounts (129) at each end of the walkboard.
6. Secure with bolts (208) and lock nuts (222).
Tighten nuts only until bolt head is snug against
mounting tube brackets. Do not tighten to torque
specification.
7. Fit cross tube bolts into end handrail strap holes
and secure with nuts (2) removed in step 4.
8. Align the gauge bracket (158) with holes (4) in
the walkboard.
9. Align the center section (5) of the handrail
assembly with holes in the gauge bracket.
Secure with bolts (193), flat washers (236), lock
washers (238), and nuts (217).
Single-hopper drills - the bolts will pass
through the center section of the handrail,
gauge bracket, walkboard extension, and
walkboard extension mount.
Double-hopper drills - the bolts will pass
through the center section of the handrail,
gauge bracket, walkboard. and walkboard
mount.
10. Secure nuts to torque specification.
11. Connect hose(s) (393) to gauge(s).
On a double-hopper drill, be sure that the left
hose (I) connects to the left gauge (I) and the
right hose (II) connects to the right gauge (II).

12. Secure hoses with clamps (176).
Install Tongue
1. At the tongue flanges, remove and save bolts
(202), flat washers (233), lock washers (243),
and nuts (220).
2. Support the tongue, at both ends, with a lift or
hoist.
3. Remove the u-bolts that secure the tongue to the
rack.
4. Move the tongue to the cart assembly location.
5. Lower the tongue to the ground. Tip the tongue
so that the bottom is down. As a reference, the
outside parking jack stob (2) is on the left-hand
side when the tongue is upright.
6. Protect the bottom of the hitch end of the tongue.
A dolly can be used to both protect the hitch and
allow easy movement.
7. Use hoists at both sides of the rear end of the
tongue, and at the front of the cart frame. To align
the flanges, it is usually necessary to elevate the
front of the cart.
8. Remove ties securing the coils of hoses and
harnesses to the flanges at the front of the cart
frame.
9. Align the tongue (135) and cart flanges. Route
hoses and harnesses into the tongue tubes as
the tongue is brought into contact with the frame.
See “Harnesses and Hydraulic Hoses”.
10. Make sure all hoses and harnesses are visible at
the front of the tongue.

11. Secure the tongue to the frame with saved bolts
(202), flat washers (233), lock washers (243),
and nuts (220).
Harnesses and Hydraulic Hoses
Install Tongue Jack
1. Use the bolt (196), lock washer (239), and nut
(218) to fasten the jack foot weldment (132) to the
jack (387).
2. Pin it to the jack stob (1) on the outside of the
tongue.
3. Raise the jack to support the tongue.
Mount Cart Wheels
The cart tires are directional. If the cart wheels are
not clearly marked, use the following guidelines to
identify left and right:
valve stems are to the outside
tread “V” patterns point forward at top
1. From each cart hub, remove and save ten sets of
wheel nuts (1).
2. Jack up the rear end of the cart.
3. At the left-hand cart hub, mount the left-hand cart
wheel with the valve stem side out.
4. Start all wheel nuts by hand, flange side of nut to
cart wheels. Tighten the wheel nuts until the
wheel is seated on the hub.
5. Lower the cart until the cart tire is on the floor.

6. Make a mark (A) on the cart wheel as a starting
point. Tighten the wheel nuts in stages to the
specified torque in the order shown below. Use
this staging and order to properly seat the cart
wheel against the hub.
Stage 1: 190 to 210 N-m (130 to 140 ft-lbs)
Stage 2: 330 to 370 N-m (265 to 280 ft-lbs)
Stage 3: 500 to 560 N-m (390 to 440 ft-lbs)
7. Install the right-hand cart wheel.
8. Block tires to prevent roll-away. Check tire
inflation (see the operator manual for the correct
pressure).
Install Hitch
If the customer’s tractor hitch height is known, see
the operator manual to determine the hole alignment
of the tongue weldment and hitch weldment. If the
position is not known, use the factory default shown.
Hoses and harnesses may be routed above or below
the hitch weldment.
Hitch Failure Hazard
Final position must have two bolts through
both tongue weldment and hitch
weldment. If a safety chain is used, the
safety chain must be attached to the
longer bolt. A hitch casting with only one
bolt, or with one hole above or below
weldment, can pivot upward suddenly, or
fail entirely. The safety chain may fail to
protect an improperly installed hitch.
Install the hitch weldment:
Drill with cart brakes - a safety chain is not
used.
1. Put the hitch weldment (133) in position in the
tongue.
2. Install two bolts (212).
3. Secure with washers (245) and nuts (221) to
Grade 5 torque (see “Torque Values Chart” on
page 65).
Drill without cart brakes - a safety chain is
used.
1. Put the hitch weldment (133) in position in the
tongue.
2. Insert the longer bolt (210) through the safety
chain washer (153), the end loop of the safety
chain (388), and then the lower hole for the hitch
weldment.
3. Insert the shorter bolt (212) through the top hole
for the hitch weldment.
