System Overview
TheAquaLogicis amultifunctionpool controllerusedtofully manageyourpool/spa system. TheAqua
Logiccancontrol pumps,valves,lighting,heaters, andchlorination. AlthoughtheAquaLogiciseasyto
use, it is important to completely read through this operating manual before attempting to operate the
control.
NOTE: ThismanualassumesthattheAqua Logichasbeen wiredandconfigured accordingtothe Instal-
lationManual. Aspectsof theAqua Logicthatpertaintosystem setup arenotcoveredinthis manual.
Automation
TheAQL-P-4cancontrolup to4highvoltage(120/240V) pieces ofequipment,upto3 automatic valve
actuators,anda conventional andsolarheater. Both manualandautomatic(programmed) operation are
available. Allofthecontrolfunctionscanbeprogrammedatadisplay/keypadwhichispartofthemainunit
(typicallylocatednearthe pool equipment)oratoneor more remotedisplay/keypads.

Chlorination
WiththeuseoftheoptionalAQL-CLchlorinationkit,theAquaLogicisalsoanautomaticchlorinegenera-
tionsystemforpooland/orspasanitization. Ifenabled(seeConfigurationMenu),thisoperationrequires
alowconcentrationof salt (sodium chloride)inthepool/spawater. TheAquaLogicautomaticallycon-
vertsthesalt intofreechlorine whichkillsbacteriaand algaeinthepool/spa. Chlorinewillrevertback to
sodiumchloride afterkillingbacteria. Thesereactionswillcontinuouslyrecycle, virtuallyeliminatingthe
needtoaddsanitizingchemicalstoyourpool/spa. Theonlytimeyoumayneedtoaddmoresalttothe
pool/spaiswhen waterisreplenished duetobackwashing,draining, orsplashing(notevaporation).
TheAquaLogicisdesignedtohandlethepurificationneedsofmostresidentialswimmingpools up to
40,000 gallons (150,000 liters), or the needs of most commercial pools up to 25,000 gallons (95,000
liters). Checklocalcodesforother restrictions. The actual amount of chlorinationrequiredtoproperly
sanitizeapool variesduetobather load,rainfall,temperature,and thepool’s cleanliness.
Forpoolslargerthan 40,000gallons,theAquaLogic cancontroloneor moreGoldlineAquaRitechlori-
natorsto supplementchlorineproduction.
NOTE:Beforeinstallingthisproductaspart of a saline water purification systeminapoolorspausing
naturalstoneforcopingorforimmediatelyadjacentpatios/decking,aqualifiedstoneinstallationspecialist
shouldbe consultedregardingthe appropriatetype,installation, sealant(ifany)andmaintenanceofstone
usedaroundasalinepoolwithelectronicchlorinegeneratorinyourparticularlocation andcircumstances.
Default Display
Turn poweronatthemainpanel and turn theAquaLogiccontrolpowercircuitbreakeron. The keypad
willshowthedefaultdisplay. Thedefault display alternates between theday/time,airandpool(orspa)
temperature,pool/spasanitizersetting,and salt level. Under certain circumstances,additionaldisplays
maybeaddedtothedefaultmenutoinformyouaboutsystemoperation. RefertotheProgrammingMenu
Flowchartonpage6toviewallpossibledisplays. TheAquaLogicwillautomaticallyscrollthroughallof
theavailabledefaultmenudisplaysoryoucanpress “<”or“>” tomanuallyscroll.

Manual System Operation
WhilethemainobjectiveoftheAquaLogicis to automate the operation of your pool/spasystem,there
maybecertaintimes whenyouwanttooverridetheautomaticoperationandcontroltheequipmentmanu-
ally. To operatethepoolequipmentmanuallywhilekeepingtheautomation active,performthefollowing
procedures. Notethatifyouturna relayonmanually,itwillremainonuntileitheryouturnitoffmanually,
orthenexttime the programmedautomaticoperationwouldnormallyturn that relayoff. Example: the
filterpumpisprogrammedtorunfrom9:00Ato5:00Pdaily. If you turn the filterpumponmanuallyat
8:00PM,itwillruncontinuouslyuntil thenextday at5:00PMat whichtimeitwillturnoffand followthe
normalprogramfromthenon. Manuallyturningoffarelayworksin asimilarfashion.
Filter Pump
Single Speed Filter Pump: If the pump is currently off, press the FILTER button to turn on the pump.
PressingtheFILTERbuttonagain willturnoffthepump. However,if thereisa heaterinthesystem, and
itisoperating,andthe“HeaterCooldown”featureisenabled(ConfigurationMenu)then: when youpress
theFILTERbuttontoturnoffthefilter,onlytheheaterwillturnoff,theFilterLEDwillflashandthedisplay
willindicate“HeaterCooldown”. Atthispointthefilterpumpwillautomaticallyturnoffafter5minutesof
heatercooldown operation. Ifyouwanttooverride theheatercooldown,simplypress theFILTERbutton
againtoturnoffthefilterpump.
Two Speed Filter Pump: If the pump is currently off, simply press the FILTER button to turn on high
speedoperationofthefilterpump. The “Filter”LEDwillilluminatecontinuously. PressingtheFILTER
buttonagainwillswitchtolowspeedoperationandthe“Filter”LEDwillflash. Ifyouattempttoswitchto
lowspeed shortlyafterturningonhigh speedthefilterpumpwill automaticallyremaininhighspeed for3
minutesbeforeswitching tolowspeed toallowthepump toprimeandestablish normalwaterflow.
FreezeProtection: Thisfunction protects thepool,plumbing,and equipment againstfreezedamage. If
Freeze Protection is enabled and theAIR temperature sensor falls below the preset freeze protection
temperature(seeFilter PumpConfiguration),theAquaLogicwill turnonthefilter pumptocirculatethe
water.

Lights, Aux1 and Aux2 Outputs
Standard Relay: Manualoperationofall3relays is identical. Assuming that the relay iscurrentlyoff,
simplypressthe appropriatebuttontoturnon therelay. If the relaydoesnotturn on,itprobablyis due to
the“interlock”feature(whichwassetupintheConfigurationMenu)beingactivatedthatrequiresthefilter
pumptobe running andthevalvestobe in thepool-onlyposition. Thisprotects pumps andotherequip-
mentfrompossibledamage. Ifthecontrolledoutputison,pressingtheappropriatebuttonagainwillturn
offtherelay. Manualturnoffisdisabled ifthe“Freeze Protection”featureis enabledandthe airtempera-
tureisless thantheselectedfreezetemperature threshold.
DimmerRelay:If Lights oranAuxoutputisconfigured as adimmer,pressing the correspondingbutton
willgenerateatemporarydisplaywhichshowsthedimmeroutputlevel(Off -On100%). Pushingthe“+”
or“-”buttonchanges thelevelinincrementsof20%. Whenthedesiredoutputlevelisdisplayed,pressthe
correspondingbuttonagaintoturnoffthe displayandreturntonormaloperation. WhentheLightsorAux
outputcomes onagain(eithermanuallyorautomatically),thedimmer outputlevelwillbethesameasthe
lasttimethatit was set.
Pool/Spa Valves
Pool-onlyor spa-only systems: The POOL/SPAbuttonhasno function.
Pool and Spa systems without spa spillover: In pool-only mode, the left LED next to the POOL/SPA
buttonis illuminated. Pressing the POOL/SPA button will switch theAQL-P-4 to spa-only operation
(rightLEDilluminated). Pressing the POOL/SPAbutton againwillswitchbackto pool-only. Note that
thefilterpumpwillturnoffwhilethepool/spavalves areturning.
Pool and Spa systems with spa spillover: In pool-only mode, the left LED next to the POOL/SPA
buttonis illuminated. Pressing the POOL/SPA button will switch theAQL-P-4 to spa-only operation
(rightLEDilluminated). PressingthePOOL/SPAbuttonagainwillswitchtospaspilloveroperation(both
LED’s illuminated). Pressing the POOL/SPAbutton again will switchbacktopool-only. Notethatthe
filterpumpwillturnoffwhilethepool/spavalvesareturning.
Service
Themain unit keypad has a SERVICE key. This button isusedprimarily during servicing of the pool
equipment. Ifyouwant to completelydisabletheautomatic operation andoperatethesystem manually,
youcanputthe system intoServiceorService-Timedmode by pressingtheSERVICEbutton. Pressing
theSERVICEbuttononcewillswitchthesystemintoservicemodewhichmeansthatallautomaticfunc-
tionsaredisabled, andtheremotedisplay/keypadsare disabled(exceptformanual turnoffforemergen-
cies). TheredSERVICELEDwillbeilluminatedandtheAquaLogicwillremaininthismodeofoperation
untilmanuallytakenoutofservice mode.
PressingtheSERVICE buttonagainwillcause theAqua Logictoswitchto service-timedmodewhichis
verysimilartoservicemode,exceptthattheAquaLogicwillautomaticallyreturntonormaloperationafter
3hours. During service timed operation, the “Service” LEDwillflash and the time remaining will be
displayedonthe remotedisplay/keypad(s).
Pressingthe SERVICE button again, will return theAquaLogic to normal (automatic) operation. See
Troubleshooting/DiagnosticInformation(page30)formoreinformationabouttheservicemodes.

Automatic System Operation
TheAquaLogiccontrols mostofyourpool equipmentautomaticallyinorder tominimizethe timespent
workingonyourpool. Most of thepoolequipmentcanbe programmed to operateonatimeclockbasis.
In addition, the desired pool and spa temperatures and pool and spa chlorinator settings can be pro-
grammed. Thissectionwillguideyouonhowtoprogram theautomaticoperation foreachfunction.
Theprogrammingofautomaticfunctionscanbeperformedateitherthemaindisplay/keypadlocatedatthe
poolequipmentpad or thein-homeremotedisplay/keypad.
Using the programming buttons
Thereare5buttonsoneach keypad that are used forprogramming(refertodiagram).
Thereare4stepsto programminganyfunction:

Menu
Press the “MENU” button to get to the desired menu. Multiple pushes of the
buttonwillrotatethroughall5menusandreturn tothestarting point.

Presseitherkeytoscrollthroughthevariousitemsintheselectedmenu. Multiple
pushesofthebutton will rotate through allmenuitemsandreturnto the starting
point. Onlymenuitemsthatareapplicable toyourpoolwillappear. (Example: if
youdon’thaveaspa, then no spa relatedmenuitemswillappear).
3. Once amenuitemhasbeen selected above,thecurrentsetting/selection will ap-
pear(flashing)onthedisplay. Use the “+” and/or “-” keys to change thisselec-
tion. Sometimes “+” and “-“ will adjust a value up or down (example: heater
temperaturesetting ortimeclockon/off time). Inthiscase, pushingthe“+”or“-”
willchangethevaluebyoneincrementandholdingthe“+”or“-”buttoninfor
morethanonesecondwillmakethevaluesautoscroll. Inothercases,the“+”and
“-“may toggle between 2 options (example: turningsuperchlorination ON or
OFF).

Afteryouhaveadjustedtheitemtothedesired value,simplymove ontothe next
menuitemto“lockin”yournewsetting. TheAquaLogicmemorywillmaintain
thesetting,evenif power isremovedforanextended period.

Programming Menu Flowchart
TheAquaLogic’sfivemenushave manyitemsineachmenuthatallowyou tocustomizetheoperationof

TheDefaultMenu isaseriesofinformative displays(temperatures,saltlevels, chlorinatorsettings,etc.)
withnothingtoset. TheAquaLogicwillautomaticallyswitchtothedefaultmenuwhennokeyshavebeen
pressedfor2minutesandwillthenscrollthrougheachdisplay.
TheSettingsMenuandtheTimersMenuarethemenusyouwillbeusingmostoftentoadjusttheoperation
ofyour pool. TheConfigurationMenuisusedwhenthe systemisinstalledanddefineswhatequipment is
connectedto eachoutputandtheoperational logicthatwillcontroltheequipment. Thismenuisnormally
“locked”andshouldonly be usedbyapoolprofessional. Details regarding theConfigurationmenuare
includedin boththeOperation andtheInstallation Manual.
The“DiagnosticMenu”isprimarilyintendedfortheservicetechnicianandcontainsinformationanddetails
aboutthesystemoperationthatarehelpfulintroubleshooting,ifproblemsoccur.

The spa heater setting will only appear if the system has been setup for “spa only” or “pool
and spa” operation and the heater control is enabled. The heater will turn on whenever the
pool/spa valves are in the “spa only” position and the filter pump is running and the spa
water temperature is less than the desired temperature setting. If you have both solar heat
and a conventional heater and the solar priority option is selected (Configuration Menu),
then the conventional heater will only operate when solar heat is NOT available.
