Safety instructions
C16A A1460-4.0 HBM: public 5
SNote, that when several transducers are installed in a
scale, there is not always an even distribution of load
on the individual transducers.
SThe transducers can be used as machine elements.
When used in this manner, it must be noted that, to
favor greater sensitivity, the transducer is not de
signed with the safety factors usual in mechanical en
gineering.
SThe transducer must not be modified from the design
or safety engineering point of view except with our
express agreement.
SThe transducer is maintenance-free.
SIn accordance with national and local environmental
protection and material recovery and recycling regula
tions, old transducers that can no longer be used
must be disposed of separately and not with normal
household garbage, see Chapter 9, Page 26.

taking into account all the safety aspects of measure
ment and automation technology so that residual risks
are minimized. This particularly concerns personal and
machine protection. The transducers function passively
and cannot implement any (safety-relevant) cutoffs. In
the event of a fault, the relevant precautions must estab
lish safe operating conditions.
General dangers of failing to follow the safety
instructions
The transducer corresponds to the state of the art and is
failsafe. The transducer may give rise to residual dangers
if it is inappropriately installed or operated.

Function
C16A A1460-4.0 HBM: public 11
4 Function
The C16A is a self-centering pendulum load cell which
returns the superstructure to its stable original position
after the load application is displaced laterally, i.e. in
clined. The maximum permissible lateral displacement or
inclination (see Chapter 11, Page 33) must not be ex
ceeded as otherwise the load cells or load application
elements may be damaged. The simplest and most usual
solution here is to set up appropriate stops on the super
structure (scale platform) that must be carefully set within
the values specified for the applicable maximum capa
city.
We recommend EPO3 and C16/EPU or C16/ZOU44A
from HBM as mounting parts for the C16A, so that prob
lem-free installation is possible. The rotation stops wel
ded onto the load cell and the supplied dowel pin are also
specifically matched for this purpose (see Dimensions in
Chapter 11, Page 33).

Conditions on site
12 A1460-4.0 HBM: public C16A
5 Conditions on site
Series C16A transducers are hermetically encapsulated
and are therefore very insensitive to the influence of
moisture and humidity. The transducers achieve protec
tion class IP68 (test conditions: 1,000 hours under 2 m
water column) and IP69K (water at high pressure, steam
cleaner), as per DIN EN60529.
Protection against corrosion
The transducer must be protected against chemicals that
could attack the transducer body steel or the cable.
Notice
Acids and all substances that release ions also attack
stainless steels and their welded seams.
Should there be any corrosion, this could cause the
transducer to fail. If this is the case, you must provide
appropriate means of protection.
Explosion protection version option
The ambient temperature range specified on the trans
ducer must not be exceeded.

Mechanical installation
C16A A1460-4.0 HBM: public 13
6 Mechanical installation
6.1 Important precautions during
installation
SHandle the transducer with care.
SUse suitable lifting equipment for installation.
SUse support bodies (dummies) identical in height dur
ing alignment if necessary.
SWelding currents must not be allowed to flow over the
transducer. If there is a risk that this might happen,
you must provide a suitable low-ohm connection to
electrically bypass the transducer. HBM, for example,
provides the highly flexible EEK ground cable, which
can be screwed on above and below the transducer.
SMake sure that the transducer cannot be overloaded.
SThe optional outer braided wire cable covering for
some C16A (e.g. with item numbers
1-C16A3C3/30t/L2R, 1-C16A2C3/40t/L2R or for the
configurable C16A with option 20R), is designed for
use when there is increased mechanical stress (e.g.
caused by gnawing rodents). If this cable is used, the
outer braided wire has to be connected to potential
equalization at least once, to avoid accidental ener
gization. This outer braided wire is not used to shield
the load cell. The inner braid of the load cell cable is
used for shielding (also refer to 7.5 EMC protection).

Mechanical installation
14 A1460-4.0 HBM: public C16A
WARNING
There is a danger of the transducer breaking if it is over
loaded. This can cause danger for the operating person
nel of the system in which the transducer is installed.
Implement appropriate safety measures to avoid over
loads or to protect against the resulting dangers.
Notice
Load cells are precision measuring elements and need to
be handled carefully. Dropping or knocking the trans
ducer may cause permanent damage. Make sure that the
transducer cannot be overloaded, including while it is be
ing mounted.
6.2 Preparation for installation
If you are using the thrust pieces EPO3, C16/EPU or
C16/ZOU44A, you must carry out the preparations de
scribed below.
Each load cell is packed with a dowel pin which, in com
bination with the rotation stop welded onto the load cell,
prevents any possible micro-rotation of the transducer
and therefore possible cable damage.
Only one thrust piece must be fitted with this pin per load
cell. Mount the thrust piece below the load cell as the
dowel pin can then engage in the rotation stop recess
that is present (see Dimensions in Chapter 11, Page 33).
The hole on the top thrust piece remains empty.

Mechanical installation
C16A A1460-4.0 HBM: public 15
► Knock the dowel pin with a hammer into the blind hole
of the thrust piece until the pin is seated. Position the
open side of the dowel pin radially (Fig. 6.1).
or
Fig. 6.1 Position of dowel pin relative to rotation stop
The correct seat of the pin is ensured by the depth of the
hole.
The footprint or foundation under the bottom thrust piece
(load transfer) and above the top thrust piece must be as
smooth and level as possible. The thrust pieces can be
positioned or screwed directly onto concrete, if the sur
face quality is appropriate, so that no further panels need
to be provided.
► Produce the necessary holes required for fastening or
attachment to the platform and foundation before as
sembly. The dimensions, depending on the thrust
piece, can be found in the dimension drawings in
Chapter 11, Page 33.
6.3 Assembly sequence
Mechanical assembly will be described below using a
platform weighing machine as an example. We recom
mend carrying out assembly in this sequence.

Mechanical installation
16 A1460-4.0 HBM: public C16A
► Raise one face of the platform weighing machine,
which is already aligned centrally, using suitable lifting
equipment.
► Mount the prepared load application parts with the
rotation stop with dowel pin facing downwards and the
one without a dowel pin facing upwards, see Chapter
6.2.
► Orientate the bottom thrust piece so that the dowel
pin faces in the direction that the cable output and
type plate should also face. Do not as yet
permanently fix the bottom thrust piece in place.
► To protect against wear, contamination and corrosion,
generously grease the upper and lower load
application elements in the loading point and the
dowel pin and rotation stop on the load cell using the
supplied grease (Fig. 6.2).
Grease these points
Fig. 6.2 Points to be greased

Mechanical installation
C16A A1460-4.0 HBM: public 17
► If using C16/EPU or C16/ZOU44A, fix the bottom
thrust pieces using the eccentric discs.
► Place the hose clamp, included with the load cell,
around the bottom thrust piece for the subsequent
sealing of the sealing sleeve.
► Insert the load cell into the bottom thrust piece with a
rotating movement so that the dowel pin on the thrust
piece engages in the recess of the rotation stop.
► Carefully lower the platform weighing machine back
down. Then insert the upper load application elements
of the load cell in to the loading point of the top thrust
piece so that the load cells are just not under load and
can still be aligned vertically.
Important
The load cells must be aligned vertically, otherwise
restoring cannot work correctly and generate incorrect
measurements.
To do this, adjust the bottom thrust piece with the
eccentric discs loosened. You can most easily check
the vertical installation position of the load cell by
positioning a suitable prism spirit level on the
cylindrical enclosure pipe.
► Lower the platform and then perform the same steps
on the other face.
► After installation is complete, check the vertical
installation position of all load cells with the platform
floating freely. If corrections are necessary, perform
them after raising the platform again.

Mechanical installation
18 A1460-4.0 HBM: public C16A
► Once all load cells are vertically aligned, rotate the
eccentric discs against the thrust piece and fix them in
place by tightening the fastening screws.
► Fold the sealing sleeve already mounted on the load
cell down over the thrust piece and fasten it directly
onto the thrust piece with the hose clamp.
Please note that the guarantee only applies if the
sealing sleeve is correctly mounted and the thrust
pieces are greased.
6.4 Procedure for special installation
situations
If the load cell support spacings are very wide or the plat
form weighing machines have a high deflection, it may be
possible that measurement deviations occur due to the
rolling movements of the load cells caused by the load.
This rolling movement is supported by the lateral dis
placement of the upper load application points of the load
cells under a load, if the contact zone between thrust
piece and load cell lies well below the bending-neutral
fiber of the platform weighing machine. In order to minim
ize the resulting deviations in this case, you can install
the load cells with a slight inclination of up to 1°facing
inwards (Fig. 6.3).
