MountingLoop:Usethiswhendeployingtheloggerbytyingit
toanobject.
AlarmLED:ThisLEDblinksredevery4secondswhenanalarm
istripped(unlessShowLEDisdisabledasdescribedin
ConfiguringtheLogger).BoththisLEDandthestatusLEDwill
blinkoncewhenyoupressthestartbuttontowakeupthe
loggerbeforeconfiguringit.IfyoublinktheloggerLEDwiththe
app,bothLEDswillbeilluminatedfor4seconds.
StatusLED:ThisLEDblinksgreenevery4secondswhenthe
loggerislogging(unlessShowLEDisdisabledasdescribedin
ConfiguringtheLogger).Iftheloggeriswaitingtostartlogging
becauseitwasconfiguredtostart“OnButtonPush”orwitha
delayedstart,itwillblinkgreenevery8seconds.
StartButton:Pressthisbuttonfor1secondtowakeupthe
logger;boththealarmandstatusLEDswillblink.Oncethe
loggerisawake,pressthisbuttonfor1secondtomoveittothe
topoftheloggerslistintheapp.Pressthisbuttonfor4seconds
tostartorstoptheloggerwhenitisconfiguredtostartorstop
“OnButtonPush”(seeConfiguringtheLogger).BothLEDswill
blinkfourtimeswhenyoupressthebuttontostartorstop
logging.Pressthisbuttonfor10secondstoresetapassword.

2. OpentheappandenableBluetoothinthedevicesettingsif
prompted.
3. Pressthebuttonontheloggertowakeitup.
4. TaptheDevicesiconintheapp.(InHOBOmobile,tap
Loggersatthetopofthescreen.)Taptheloggerintheapp
toconnecttoit.Iftheloggerdoesnotappear
Iftheloggerdoesnotappearorifitishavingtrouble
connecting,followthesetips.
Makesuretheloggeris“awake”bypressingthestart
button.ThealarmandstatusLEDswillblinkoncewhen
theloggerwakesup.Youcanalsopressthebuttona
secondtimetobringittothetopofthelistintheappif
youareworkingwithmultipleloggers.
Makesuretheloggeriswithinrangeofyourmobile
device.Therangeforsuccessfulwirelesscommunication
isapproximately30.5m(100ft)withfullline‐of‐sight.
Ifyourdevicecanconnecttotheloggerintermittentlyor
losesitsconnection,moveclosertothelogger,within
sightifpossible.
Iftheloggerappearsintheapp,butyoucannotconnect
toit,closetheappandpowercyclethemobiledevice.
ThisforcesthepreviousBluetoothconnectiontoclose.
Oncetheloggerisconnected,youcanselectoneofthe
followingactions:
ConfigureinHOBOmobileorinHOBOconnect.
Selectloggersettingsandloadthemontotheloggerto
startlogging.SeeConfiguringtheLogger.
ReadoutinHOBOmobileorinHOBOconnect.
Downloadloggerdata.SeeReadingOuttheLogger.

StartLogginginHOBOmobileorandthenin

StopLogginginHOBOmobileorandthenin
HOBOconnect.Stoptheloggerfromrecordingdata.This
overridesanyotherStopLoggingsettingsthatmaybe
configured.
PageLoggerLEDinHOBOmobileorandthenin
HOBOconnect.Pressandholdthisoptiontoilluminate
thealarmandstatusLEDsfor4seconds.
LoggerPasswordinHOBOmobileorandthenin
HOBOconnect.Selectthistocreateapasswordforthe
loggerthatwillberequiredifanothermobiledevice
attemptstoconnecttoit.Toresetapassword,connect
tothelogger,tapSetLoggerPasskey,andselectResetto
FactoryDefaultinHOBOmobileortapandtapReset
inHOBOconnect.Youcanalsopressthebuttononthe
loggerfor10secondstoresetthepassword.
UpdateFirmwareinHOBOmobileorandthenin
HOBOconnect.Whennewloggerfirmwareisavailable,
thisactionappearsinthelist.Selectitandfollowthe
instructionsonthescreen.Aloggerreadoutwillbe
completedautomaticallyatthebeginningofthe
firmwareupdateprocess.Iftheconnectionislost
betweentheloggerandthemobiledeviceduringthe
firmwareupdate,aFirmwareUpdatePendingStatus
displaysfortheloggerintheDeviceslist.Connecttothe
loggerandupdatethefirmwareagain(orselectRestore
LoggerifavailableinHOBOmobile).

Important:Beforeupdatingthefirmwareonthe
logger,checktheremainingbatterylevelbyselecting
FullStatusDetailsandmakesureitisnolessthan30%.
Makesureyouhavethetimetocompletetheentire
updateprocess,whichrequiresthattheloggerremains
connectedtothedeviceduringtheupgrade.
ForceOffload(HOBOmobileonly).Thismayappearifan
errorwasencounteredwhenloadingconfiguresettings.
Selectthistooffloadallthedataontheloggerbefore
reconfiguringit.
ConfiguringtheLogger
Usetheapptosetupthelogger,includingselectingthelogging
interval,startandstoploggingoptions,configuringalarms,and
othersettings.
1. Pressthebuttonontheloggertowakeitup.
2. Intheapp,taptheDevicesicon(inHOBOmobile,tap
Loggersatthetopofthescreen).Ifyouareworkingwith
multipleloggers,youcanpressthebuttonontheloggera
secondtimetobringittothetopofthelist.Tapthelogger
intheapptoconnecttoit.
3. TapConfigureinHOBOmobileortapinHOBOconnect.
4. TapNameandtypeanameforthelogger(optional).In
HOBOmobile,tapDone.Ifnonameisselected,thelogger
serialnumberisusedasthename.
5. TapGrouptoaddtheloggertoagroup(optional).TapDone
orSave.
6. TapLoggingIntervalandchoosehowfrequentlythelogger
willrecorddata.
7. TapStartLoggingandselectwhenloggingwillbegin:
Now.Loggingwillbeginimmediatelyafterthe
configurationsettingsareloadedonthelogger.
OnNextLoggingInterval.Loggingwillbeginatthenext
evenintervalasdeterminedbytheselectedlogging
interval.
OnButtonPush.Loggingwillbeginonceyoupressthe
buttonontheloggerfor4secondsorstartloggingwith
theapp.
OnDate/Time.Loggingwillbeginatadateandtimeyou
specify.SelecttheDateandtime.InHOBOmobile,tap
Done.
TapDoneorSave.
8. TapStopLoggingandselecttheoptionsforwhenlogging
willend.
a. Chooseoneoftwomemoryoptions:
WhenMemoryFills.Theloggerwillcontinuerecording
datauntilthememoryisfull.
Never(WrapWhenFull).Theloggerwillcontinue
recordingdataindefinitely,withnewestdata
overwritingtheoldest.
b. SelectOnButtonPushifyouwanttobeabletostop
loggingbypushingthebuttonontheloggerfor4
seconds.ForHOBOmobile:IfyoualsochooseOnButton
PushfortheStartLoggingoption,thenyouwillnotbe
abletostoplogginguntil30secondsafterloggingbegins.
c. Selectoneofthefollowingtimeoptionsforwhentostop
logging:
Never.Selectthisifyoudonotwanttheloggertostop
atanypredeterminedtimeframe.
OnDate/Time.Selectthisifyouwanttheloggerto
stoploggingonaspecificdateandtime.Selectthe
dateandtime.InHOBOmobile,tapDone.
After.Selectthisifyouwanttocontrolhowlongthe
loggershouldcontinueloggingonceitstarts.Choose
theamountoftimeyouwanttheloggertologdata
andthentapDone.Forexample,select30daysifyou
wanttheloggertologdatafor30daysafterlogging
begins.
d. TapDoneorSave.
9. EnableordisableShowLED.IfShowLEDisdisabled,the
alarmandstatusLEDsontheloggerwillnotbeilluminated
whilelogging(thealarmLEDwillnotblinkifanalarmtrips).
YoucantemporarilyturnonLEDswhenShowLEDis
disabledbypressingthebuttonontheloggerfor1second.
10. EnableordisableBluetoothAlwaysOn.IfBluetoothAlways
Onisenabled,theloggerwill“advertise”orregularlysend
outaBluetoothsignalforthephoneortablettofindviathe
appwhileitislogging,whichusesbatterypower.When
BluetoothAlwaysOnisdisabled,theloggerwillonly
advertiseduringloggingwhenyoupressthebuttononthe
loggertowakeitup,therebypreservingasmuchbattery
poweraspossible.
11. Setuptemperaturealarms(optional).
a. EnabletheHighAlarminHOBOmobileorselectHighin
HOBOconnectifyouwantanalarmtotripwhenthe
sensorreadingrisesabovethehighalarmvalue.Dragthe
sliderortypeavaluetosetthehighalarmvalue.
b. EnabletheLowAlarminHOBOmobileorselectLowin
HOBOconnectifyouwantanalarmtotripwhenthe
sensorreadingfallsbelowthelowalarmvalue.Dragthe
sliderortypeavaluetosetthelowalarmvalue.The
actualvaluesforthehighandlowalarmlimitsaresetto
theclosestvaluesupportedbythelogger.
c. FortheDuration,selecthowmuchtimeshouldelapse
beforethealarmtripsandselectoneofthefollowing:
Cumulative.Thealarmwilltriponcethesensorreading
isoutoftheacceptablerangefortheselectedduration
anytimeduringlogging.Forexample,ifthehighalarm
issetto85°Fandthedurationissetto30minutes,
thenthealarmwilltriponcethesensorreadingshave
beenabove85°Fforatotalof30minutessincethe
loggerwasconfigured.
Consecutive.Thealarmwilltriponcethesensor
readingisoutoftheacceptablerangecontinuouslyfor
theselectedduration.Forexample,thehighalarmis
setto85°Fandthedurationissetto30minutes,then
thealarmwillonlytripifallsensorreadingsare85°For
aboveforacontinuous30‐minuteperiod.
d. TapDoneorSave.
12. TapStartintheupperrightcorneroftheConfigurescreen
inHOBOmobileortapinHOBOconnect
Loggingwillbeginbasedonthesettingsyouselected.Pressthe
startbuttonontheloggerifyousetituptostartloggingwitha

buttonpush.SeeMountingtheLoggerfordetailsonmounting
andseeReadingOuttheLoggerfordetailsondownloading.
Iftheloggerwasconfiguredwithalarmsettings,analarmwill
tripwhenthetemperaturereadingisoutsidetherange
specifiedintheloggerconfiguration.Whenanalarmtrips,the
loggeralarmLEDblinksevery4seconds(unlessShowLEDis
disabled),analarmiconappearsintheapp,andanAlarmOut
ofRangeeventislogged.Evenifthetemperaturereading
returnstoanormalrange,thealarmindicatorwillnotclearin
theappandthealarmLEDwillcontinuetoblink.
SettingaPassword
Youcancreateanencryptedpasswordfortheloggerthatwill
berequiredifanotherphoneortabletattemptstoconnectto
it.Thisisrecommendedtoensurethatadeployedloggerisnot
mistakenlystoppedorpurposelyalteredbyothers.This
passwordusesaproprietaryencryptionalgorithmthatchanges
witheveryconnection.
Tosetapassword:
1. TaptheDevicesicon(inHOBOmobile,tapLoggersatthe
topofthescreen).Taptheloggerintheapptoconnectto
it.
2. TapLoggerPasswordinHOBOmobileortapandthen
inHOBOconnect.
3. TypeapasswordandthentapSaveorSet.
Onlythephoneortabletusedtosetthepasswordcanthen
connecttotheloggerwithoutenteringapassword;allother
mobiledeviceswillberequiredtoenterthepassword.For
example,ifyousetthepasswordfortheloggerwithyourtablet
andthentrytoconnecttothedevicelaterwithyourphone,
youwillberequiredtoenterthepasswordonthephonebut
notwithyourtablet.Similarly,ifothersattempttoconnectto
theloggerwithdifferentdevices,thentheywouldalsobe
requiredtoenterthepassword.Toresetapassword,pressthe
buttonontheloggerfor10secondsorconnecttothelogger
andthentapSetLoggerPasskeyandselectResettoFactory
DefaultinHOBOmobileortap,then,andtapResetin
HOBOconnect.
ReadingOuttheLogger
Todownloaddatafromthelogger:
1. TaptheDevicesicon(inHOBOmobile,tapLoggersatthe
topofthescreen).Iftheloggerwasconfiguredwith
BluetoothAlwaysOndisabled,pressthebuttononthe
loggertowakeitup.Whenworkingwithmultipleloggers,
youcanalsopressthebuttonontheloggertobringittothe
topofthelist.
2. Taptheloggerintheapptoconnecttoit.
3. TapReadoutinHOBOmobileortapinHOBOconnect.
4. InHOBOmobile:TaptheDataFilesiconandthentapthe
mini‐graphtoviewalargerversionofthegraphorshare
thefile.
InHOBOconnect:TaptheHOBOFilesiconandselectthe
filetoviewit.Tapandthentoexportandsharethe
data.
DatacanalsobeuploadedautomaticallytoHOBOlink,Onset’s
web‐basedsoftware.Fordetails,seetheappuser’sguideand
seetheHOBOlinkhelpfordetailsonworkingwithdatain
HOBOlink.Note:MX100loggersarenotsupportedbythe
HOBOMXGateway.ContactOnsetTechnicalSupportfor
questionsonMX100loggercompatibilitywiththegateway.

MountingtheLogger
Youcanmounttheloggerbyusingtapeorthemountingloop.
Onthebackofthelogger,removethebackingonthe
tapethatisadheredtothetopandbottomofthelogger
andthenmountitonaflatsurface.
Usethemountinglooptotietheloggertoanother
object.
Theloggercanbeplacedinindoorlocationsthatexperience
condensation.Althoughtheloggercanwithstandincidental
splashingwithwater,donotdeployitinapermanentlywet
location.
ProtectingtheLogger
Note:Staticelectricitymaycausetheloggertostoplogging.

TheloggerusesoneCR2450non‐replaceablelithiumbattery.
Batterylifeis1year,typicalwithaloggingintervalof1minute,
butmaybeextendedto2yearswhentheloggerisconfigured
withBluetoothAlwaysOndisabled.Expectedbatterylifevaries
basedontheambienttemperaturewheretheloggeris
deployedandthefrequencyofconnections,downloads,and
paging.Deploymentsinextremelycoldorhottemperaturesor
aloggingintervalfasterthan1minutecanimpactbatterylife.
Estimatesarenotguaranteedduetouncertaintiesininitial
batteryconditionsandoperatingenvironment.
