usingBluetooth®LowEnergytechnology.TheMX1104modelhasintegratedtemperature,
relativehumidity(RH),andlightintensitysensorsandoneanaloginputwhiletheMX1105
modelhasfouranaloginputs.Bothmodelssupportawidevarietyofexternalsensors(sold
separately),includingself‐describingtemperature,split‐coreACcurrenttransformer,4‐20mA
input,andDCvoltageinputsensors.Theself‐describingsensorsaredesignedwithintegrated
strainreliefforasecureconnectiontotheloggersandareautomaticallydetectedbythe
HOBOmobileappforeasysetup.Usingtheapp,youcanconfiguretheloggers,readoutand
viewdata,andexportthedataforfurtheranalysis.Theloggerscancalculateminimum,
maximum,average,andstandarddeviationstatisticsandcanalsobeconfiguredtotripaudible
orvisualalarmsatthresholdsyouspecify.Inaddition,bothloggerssupportburstloggingin
whichdataisloggedatadifferentintervalwhensensorreadingsareaboveorbelowcertain
limits.Thesecompactloggersalsohavebuilt‐inLCDscreenstodisplaycurrentsensorreadings,
loggingstatus,batteryuse,memoryconsumption,andmore.

Logger).
BottomButton:Whenstatisticsarebeinglogged,pressthis
buttonfor1secondtoswitchbetweenthelatestsensor
reading,statistics,andanalarmreading(ifapplicable)forthe
channelcurrentlydisplayed.Ifnostatisticsarebeinglogged
andasensoralarmtrips,pressthisbuttonfor1secondtoview
thealarmreadingforthechannelcurrentlydisplayed.Youcan
alsopressthisbuttonfor1secondtowakeupthelogger,
silenceabeepingalarm,orturntheLCDscreenoniftheoption
toturnofftheLCDhasbeenenabled.Pressthisbuttonfor3
secondstoclearavisualalarmiftheloggerwasconfiguredin

Plug:UsethisSantoprene®(TPE)plugtofillanemptyanalog
sensorport.
MountingLoops:Usethetwomountingloops(onlyonevisible

Thebatteryindicatorshowstheapproximate
batterypowerremaining.
Theloggerhasbeenconfiguredtostoplogging
whenmemoryfills.Thememorybarindicatesthe
approximatespaceremainingintheloggerto
recorddata.Whenfirststarted,allfivesegments
inthebarwillbeempty.Inthisexample,the
loggermemoryisalmostfull(onlyonesegmentin
thememorybarisempty).
Theloggerhasbeenconfiguredtoneverstop
logging(wrapping).Theloggerwillcontinue
recordingdataindefinitely,withnewestdata
overwritingtheoldestdatauntilthebattery
voltageisdepletedortheloggerisreconfigured.
Whenfirstlaunched,allfivesegmentsinthe
memorybarwillbeempty.Inthisexample,the
memoryisfull(allfivesegmentsarefilledin)and
newdataisnowoverwritingtheoldestdata.
Theloggeriscurrentlylogging.
Thisindicatesasensoralarmhastripped.Press
thetopbuttontoviewthechannelwiththealarm
icon.Pressthebottombuttontoviewthereading
thattrippedthealarm.The“alm”symbol
(describedbelow)isdisplayedonthescreenwith
thereading(ordashesifthealarmhasalready
cleared).Thissymbolatleftwillcleardepending
onhowvisualalarmswereconfiguredin
HOBOmobile.Ifthevisualalarmwassettoclear
whentheloggerisreconfigured,thissymbolwill
remainontheLCDuntilthenexttimenew
configuresettingsareloadedontothelogger(see
SettinguptheLogger).Otherwise,itwillclear
whenthesensorreadingisbackwithinthealarm
limitsorbypressingthebottombuttonfor3
seconds.
Thisisdisplayedwiththereadingthattrippedthe
alarm.Whileviewingthechannelwiththealarm,
pressthebottombuttontoseethereading(you
mayneedtocyclethroughstatisticsreadingsfirst
ifapplicable).Ifthealarmcleared,dashes(‐‐‐‐)
willdisplayinsteadofareading.
Avisualalarmisreadytobecleared.Thiswillonly
appearifHOBOmobilewasconfiguredtomaintain
thevisualalarmuntilthealarmbuttonispressed.
Whileviewingthechannelwiththealarmonthe
LCD,pressthebottombuttonfor3secondsto
clearthevisualalarm.Notethatanaudiblealarm
canbesilencedbypressingthetoporbottom
buttonfor1second.
Thisindicatesaproblemwithanexternalsensor.

Thisisanexampleofasensorreading,withthe
latestreadingdisplayedabovetheunittypefor
thatsensor.ToswitchbetweenUSandSIunits,
changetheunitsintheHOBOmobileSettings(the
loggermustbereconfiguredforunitschangesto
takeeffect).Note:Ifthesensorvalueexceedsfive
digits,thenthescientificnotationE3isappended
tothevalueontheLCDtosignifythatthe
displayeddigitsaremultipliedby1,000.For
example,avalueof100,000isdisplayedas100E3
ontheLCD.ThisonlyaffectstheLCD;loggeddata
containsalldigits.
Theloggerhasbeenconfiguredtostartloggingon
aparticulardate/time.Thedisplaywillcountdown
indays,hours,minutes,andsecondsuntillogging
begins.Inthisexample,5minutesand38seconds
remainuntilloggingwillbegin.
Theconfiguresettingsarebeingloadedontothe
loggerfromHOBOmobile.
TheloggerhasbeenstoppedwithHOBOmobileor
becausethememoryisfull.
Notes:
YoucandisabletheLCDscreenwhenlogging.Deselect
“ShowLCD”whensettinguptheloggerasdescribedin
thenextsection.Whenthisoptionisdisabled,youcan
stilltemporarilyviewtheLCDscreenbypushingthetop
orbottombuttonfor1second.TheLCDwillthenremain
onfor10minutes.
TheLCDscreenrefreshesatthesamerateasthelogging
interval.
Whentheloggerhasstoppedlogging,theLCDscreenwill
remainonwith“STOP”displayeduntiltheloggeris
offloadedtoyourmobiledevice(unlesstheloggerwas
configuredwiththe“ShowLCD”optiondisabled).Once
theloggerhasbeenoffloaded,theLCDwillturnoff
automaticallyafter1hour.TheLCDwillturnbackonthe
nexttimeyoupressthetoporbottombuttontowakeup
thelogger.
TheLCDscreenflashes“HELLO”whenyoupagethe
loggerfromHOBOmobile(seeDownloadingHOBOmobile
andConnectingtoaLogger).

AlthoughtheMX1104isfactorycalibratedtoaccountforthe
lightattenuationoftheplasticenclosure,youmaynoticea
differenceintheMX1104readingcomparedtoacommercially
availableluxmeter.Ideally,alightmeter’sresponseshouldbe
proportionaltothecosineoftheangleatwhichthelightis
incident.TheMX1104doesnotcollectlightexactlyaccordingto
thisrule.PlotBillustratesthedifferencebetweenanideal
cosineresponseandtheapproximateresponseoftheMX1104.
TheMX1104iscalibratedtogivebestresultsfordirect
illumination,butthisisnotalwaysthecase.

TheMX1104isalsocalibratedtogivebestresultsinthe
sunlight.Becauseartificialindoorandoutdoorlightshave
differentspectralpropertiesthansunlight,theMX1104may
showanerrorofgreaterthan±10%whencomparedtoa
commerciallyavailableluxmeterinthesesituations.Multiple
MX1104loggers,however,willtypicallyexhibit±10%
agreementwitheachotherinanytypeoflight.
DownloadingHOBOmobileand
ConnectingtoaLogger
InstalltheHOBOmobileapptoconnecttoandworkwiththe
logger.
1. DownloadHOBOmobile.GototheAppStore®and
downloadtheHOBOmobileapptoyourphoneortablet.
2. OpenHOBOmobile.EnableBluetoothinyourdevice
settingsifprompted.
3. Connecttothelogger.TaptheDevicesiconandthentap
Loggersatthetopofthescreen.Theloggershouldappear
intheInRangelistasshownhere.
Taptherowinthelisttoconnecttothelogger.Ifitdoes
notappearinthelist,makesuretheloggeriswithinrange
ofyourmobiledevice.Notethatsensorreadingsarevisible
inthislisteveniftheloggerisnotlogging.Dashesare
displayedforchannelsthatarenotenabled.
Tipsforconnecting:
IftheloggerwasconfiguredwithBluetoothAlwaysOn
disabled(seeSettinguptheLogger),makesurethe
loggeris“awake”bypressingthetoporbottombutton.
Pressthetopbuttonagaintobringtheloggertothetop
ofthelistifyouareworkingwithmultipleloggers.
Makesuretheloggeriswithinrangeofyourmobile
device.Therangeforsuccessfulwirelesscommunication
isapproximately30.5m(100ft)withfullline‐of‐sight.
Ifyourdevicecanconnecttotheloggerintermittentlyor
losesitsconnection,moveclosertothelogger,within
sightifpossible.
Changetheorientationofyourphoneortablettoensure
theantennainyourdeviceispointedtowardthelogger.
Obstaclesbetweentheantennainthedeviceandthe
loggermayresultinintermittentconnections.
IftheloggerappearsintheInRangelist,butyoucannot
connecttoit,closeHOBOmobileandpowercyclethe
mobiledevice.ThisforcesthepreviousBluetooth
connectiontoclose.
Onceconnectedtothelogger,youcanselectoneofthe
followingactions:
Configure.Selectloggersettingsandloadthemontothe
loggertostartlogging.SeeSettinguptheLogger.
Readout.Offloadloggerdata.SeeReadingOutthe
Logger.
FullStatusDetails.Checkthebatterylevelandviewthe
configurationsettingscurrentlyselectedforthelogger.
StartLoggingorRestartLogging.Theseoptionsappear
dependingontheStartLoggingandStopLoggingsettings
selectedinthenextsection.
StopLogging.Stoptheloggerfromrecordingdata(this
overridesanyStopLoggingsettingsdescribedinSetting
uptheLogger).
Page.PressandholdthePageiconandtheloggerwill

ClearAudibleAlarm.Ifaudiblealarmsareenabledas
describedinSettingupAlarms,usethistocleara
beepingalarmonthelogger.
LoggerPassword.Selectthistocreateapasswordforthe
loggerthatwillberequiredifanothermobiledevice
attemptstoconnecttoit.Toresetapassword,
simultaneouslypressboththetopandbottombuttonfor
10secondsortapResettoFactoryDefaultintheSet
LoggerPasswordscreen.
UpdateFirmware.Whennewloggerfirmwareis
available,thisactionappearsinthelist.Selectitand
followtheinstructionsonthescreen.Aloggerreadout
willbecompletedautomaticallyatthebeginningofthe
firmwareupdateprocess.Iftheconnectionislost
betweentheloggerandthemobiledeviceduringthe
firmwareupdate,aFirmwareUpdatePendingStatus
displaysfortheloggerwhenyoutapDeviceandthen
Loggers.ConnecttotheloggerandselectRestoreLogger
(orUpdateFirmwareifthatoptionisavailable)to
continueupdatingthefirmware.
Important:Beforeupdatingthefirmwareonthe
logger,checktheremainingbatterylevelbyselecting
FullStatusDetailsandmakesureitisnolessthan30%.
Makesureyouhavethetimetocompletetheentire
updateprocess,whichrequiresthattheloggerremains
connectedtothemobiledeviceduringtheupgrade.
ForceOffload.Thismayappearifanerrorwas

1. Ifyouareusingananalogsensor,insertthesensorpluginto
thesensorport.Forself‐describingsensors,turnthesensor
plugone‐quarterclockwiseuntilitstops.SeeWorkingwith
ExternalSensorsformoredetails.
2. TaptheDevicesiconandthentapLoggersatthetopofthe
screen.Taptheloggertoconnecttoit.Iftheloggerwas
configuredwithBluetoothAlwaysOndisabled,pressa
buttonontheloggertowakeitup.Whenworkingwith
multipleloggers,youcanpressthetopbuttononthelogger
tobringittothetopofthelist.
3. Onceconnected,tapConfigure.
4. TapNameandtypeanamefortheloggerupto20
characters(optional).TapDone.
5. TapGrouptoaddtheloggertotheFavoritesgroup,an
existingcustomgroup,orcreateanewgroupnamewithup
to20characters(optional).TapDone.
6. TapLoggingIntervalandchoosehowfrequentlythelogger
willrecorddataunlessoperatinginburstloggingmode(see
BurstLogging).
7. TapStartLoggingandselectwhenloggingwillbegin:
Now.LoggingwillbeginimmediatelyaftertappingStart
intheConfigurescreen.
OnNextLoggingInterval.Loggingwillbeginatthenext
evenintervalasdeterminedbytheselectedlogging
interval.
OnButtonPush.Loggingwillbeginonceyoupressthe
Start/Stoploggingbuttonontheloggerfor3seconds.
OnDate/Time.Loggingwillbeginatadateandtimeyou
specify.SelectthedateandtimeandtapDone.
TapDone.
8. TapStopLoggingandselecttheoptionsforwhenlogging
willend.
a. Chooseoneoftwomemoryoptions:
WhenMemoryFills.Theloggerwillcontinuerecording
datauntilthememoryisfull.
Never(WrapWhenFull).Theloggerwillcontinue
recordingdataindefinitely,withnewestdata
overwritingtheoldest.Thisoptionisnotavailableif
theLoggingModeissettoBurst(seeBurstLogging).
b. SelectOnButtonPushifyouwanttobeabletostop

interval,thegapbetweenthetimeyoupressthebutton
toresumeloggingandthetimeactualloggingbegins
couldbesignificant.Thefasterthelogginginterval,the

WorkingwithExternalSensors

Toconnectanexternalsensor:
1. Makesuretheloggerisstopped.
2. Forself‐describingsensors,inserttheplugintoananalog

SettingupAlarms

Oncecleared,anaudiblealarmwillstartbeepingagainif
thesensorvaluesgooutofthenormalrange.Evenifan
audiblealarmiscleared,avisualalarmmayremainon
theloggerLCDandinHOBOmobiledependingonthe
settingsselectedformaintainingvisualalarmsorbecause
thealarmconditionmaystillbeineffect.Inaddition,an
audiblealarmwillcontinuebeepingwhenthesensor
valueshavereturnedtothenormalrangeuntilitis
clearedasdescribedinstep11.
Althoughanaudiblealarmandavisualalarmcanoccur
atthesametimewhenasensoralarmistripped,theyare
clearedindifferentways.Theaudiblealarmcanbe
clearedasdescribedinstep11.Meanwhile,avisual
alarmisclearedasdeterminedbythesettingselectedfor
MaintainVisualAlarmUntilintheConfigurescreen.This
meansyoucouldclearabeepingaudiblealarmandthe
visualalarmwillremainontheLCDandinHOBOmobile
untiltheloggerisreconfigured,thesensorisinlimits,or
thebottombuttonontheloggerispressed‐‐whichever
settingyouselected.
Iftheloggerwasconfiguredtostoploggingwithabutton
push,anytrippedalarmswillbeclearedautomatically
whenloggingisstoppedandnoAlarmClearedeventwill
beloggedinthedatafile.Thisensuresthattheloggerwill
startcheckingforalarmconditionswhenloggingresumes
(iftheloggerwasconfiguredwithAllowButtonRestart
selected).
BurstLogging
Burstloggingisaloggingmodethatallowsyoutosetupmore
frequentloggingwhenaspecifiedconditionismet.For
example,aloggerisrecordingdataata5‐minutelogging
intervalandburstloggingisconfiguredtologevery30seconds
foratemperaturesensorwhenthetemperaturerisesabove
85°F(thehighlimit)orfallsbelow32°F(thelowlimit).This
meanstheloggerwillrecorddataevery5minutesaslongas
thetemperatureremainsbetween32°Fand85°F.Oncethe
temperaturerisesabove85°F,theloggerwillswitchtothe
fasterloggingrateandrecorddataevery30secondsuntilthe
temperaturefallsbackto85°F.Atthattime,loggingthen
resumesevery5minutesatthenormallogginginterval.
Similarly,ifthetemperaturefallsbelow32°F,thenthelogger
wouldswitchtoburstloggingmodeagainandrecorddata
every30seconds.Oncethetemperaturerisesbackto32°F,the
loggerwillthenreturntonormalmode,loggingevery5
minutes.Note:Sensoralarms,statistics,andtheStopLogging
option“WrapWhenFull”arenotavailableinburstlogging
mode.
Tosetupburstlogging:

belowthehighlimit.Nowbackinnormalmode,thenext
loggingintervalwillbe10minutesfromthelastburst
loggingpoint,or9:22inthiscase.Ifburstlogginghadnot
occurred,thenextdatapointwouldhavebeenat9:15.
ANewIntervaleventiscreatedeachtimethelogger
entersorexitsburstloggingmode.SeeRecording
InternalLoggerEventsfordetailsonplottingandviewing
theevent.Inaddition,iftheloggerisstoppedwitha
buttonpushwhileinburstloggingmode,thenaNew
Intervaleventisautomaticallyloggedandtheburst
conditioniscleared,eveniftheactualhighorlow
conditionhasnotcleared.Theloggerwillcheckthehigh
andlowconditionswhenloggingresumes(ifthelogger
wasconfiguredwithAllowButtonRestartselected).
StatisticsLogging
Duringfixedintervallogging,theloggerrecordsdatafor
enabledsensorsand/orselectedstatisticsatthelogging
intervalselected.Statisticsarecalculatedatasamplingrateyou
specifywiththeresultsforthesamplingperiodrecordedat
eachlogginginterval.Thefollowingstatisticscanbeloggedfor
eachsensor:
Themaximum,orhighest,sampledvalue,
Theminimum,orlowest,sampledvalue,
Anaverageofallsampledvalues,and
Thestandarddeviationfromtheaverageforallsampled
values.
Forexample,theMX1104loggerisconfiguredwithonlythe
temperatureandRHsensorsenabled,andthelogginginterval
setto5minutes.Theloggingmodeissettofixedinterval
loggingwithNormalandallfourstatisticsenabledandwitha
statisticssamplingintervalof30seconds.Onceloggingbegins,
theloggerwillmeasureandrecordtheactualtemperatureand
RHsensorvaluesevery5minutes.Inaddition,theloggerwill
takeatemperatureandRHsampleevery30secondsand
temporarilystoretheminmemory.Theloggerwillthen
calculatethemaximum,minimum,average,andstandard
deviationusingthesamplesgatheredovertheprevious5‐
minuteperiodandlogtheresultingvalues.Whenreadingout
thelogger,thiswouldresultin10dataseries(notincludingany
derivedseries,suchasdewpoint):twosensorseries(with
temperatureandRHdataloggedevery5minutes)pluseight
maximum,minimum,average,andstandarddeviationseries
(fourfortemperatureandfourforRHwithvaluescalculated
andloggedevery5minutesbasedonthe30‐secondsampling).
Tologstatistics:
1. TaptheDevicesiconandthentapLoggersatthetopofthe
screen.Taptheloggertoconnecttoit.Iftheloggerwas
configuredwithBluetoothAlwaysOndisabled,pressa
buttonontheloggertowakeitup.Whenworkingwith
multipleloggers,youcanpressthetopbuttononthelogger

ReadingOuttheLogger
Tooffloaddatafromthelogger:
1. TaptheDevicesiconandthentapLoggersatthetopofthe
screen.Taptheloggertoconnecttoit.Iftheloggerwas
configuredwithBluetoothAlwaysOndisabled,pressa
buttonontheloggertowakeitup.Whenworkingwith
multipleloggers,youcanpressthetopbuttononthelogger
tobringittothetopofthelist.
2. Onceconnected,tapReadout.
3. TaptheDataFilesicontoviewamini‐graphofthe
offloadeddata.
4. Tapthemini‐graphtoviewalargerversionofthegraphor
tosharethefile.
DatacanalsobeuploadedautomaticallytoHOBOlink,Onset’s
web‐basedsoftware,viaHOBOmobileortheHOBOMX
Gateway.FordetailsonuploadingdatatoHOBOlink,seethe

ProtectingtheLogger
Theloggerisdesignedforindooruseandcanbepermanently
damagedbycorrosionifitgetswet.Protectitfrom
condensation.
Note:Staticelectricitymaycausetheloggertostoplogging.
Theloggerhasbeentestedto8KV,butavoidelectrostatic
dischargebygroundingyourselftoprotectthelogger.Formore

BatteryInformation
Theloggerrequirestwouser‐replaceableAAA1.5Valkalineor
optionallithiumbatteriesforoperationattheextremeendsof
theloggeroperatingrange.Batterylifeis1year,typicalwitha
loggingintervalof1minute,butmaybeextendedto2years
whentheloggerisconfiguredwithBluetoothAlwaysOn
disabled.Expectedbatterylifevariesbasedontheambient
temperaturewheretheloggerisdeployed,theloggingor
samplinginterval,frequencyofoffloadingandconnectionto
themobiledevice,numberofchannelsthatareactive,audible
alarmsduration,useofburstmodeorstatisticslogging,and
batteryperformance.Deploymentsinextremelycoldorhot
temperatures,aloggingintervalfasterthan1minute,ora
samplingintervalfasterthan15secondscanimpactbattery
life.Estimatesarenotguaranteedduetouncertaintiesininitial
batteryconditionsandoperatingenvironment.
Toreplacethebatteries:
1. UseaPhillips‐headscrewdrivertounscrewthefourscrews
onthefrontofthelogger.
2. Carefullyseparatethetopandbottomofthelogger
enclosure.
3. Removeanyoldbatteriesandinsertnewbatteries
observingpolarity.
4. Makesuretherubbersealonthebottompartofthelogger
enclosureiscleanandfreeofanydebris.
5. Carefullyreassembletheloggerenclosureandscrewinthe
fourscrews.
WARNING:Donotcutopen,incinerate,heatabove85°C
(185°F),orrechargelithiumbatteries.Thebatteriesmay
explodeiftheloggerisexposedtoextremeheatorconditions
thatcoulddamageordestroythebatterycases.Donotdispose
oftheloggerorbatteriesinfire.Donotexposethecontentsof
