Introduction
About the Quick Start Guide
This objective of this quick start guide is to increase familiarity of the Holtek's HT32 series
microcontrollers. The content includes information regarding the installation and configuration
of the CooCox Integrated Development Environment, hereafter known as the CoIDE, for Holtek's
HT32 series microcontroller. It also provides information regarding the CoIDE usage to compile
and run a software project.

About the CooCox CoIDE
The CoIDE is a new, free and highly-integrated software development environment for ARM®
cortex M3 and M0 based microcontrollers. It includes all the tools necessary to develop
high-quality software solutions in a timely and cost effective manner. It integrates CoBuilder and
CoDebugger for simplicity and ease of use. The CoIDE provides the following key features for
embedded applications.

Requirements
The following components as listed below are required:
▆A target board with a HT32 series MCU
▆A hardware debug adapter such as the Holtek’s e-Link32 or CoLinkEx
▆A host computer running Microsoft®Windows®XP SP3, Vista, or Windows®7
▆CooCox CoIDE V1.4.1 or above

Installing the CooCox CoIDE
The evaluation software of CooCox CoIDE can be downloaded from http://www.coocox.org or a
preloaded CD-ROM provided by Holtek.
Step 1. Execute the installation program of the CoIDE by double-clicking on “CoIDE-x.x.x.exe”
where “x.x.x” represents the version number. Press the “Next” button to continue when the
screen below appears.

Step 2. Select the destination location where the CoIDE is to be installed and then click the “Next”
button to continue.

Step 3. Select Start Menu Folder and then click the “Next” button to continue.

Step 5. Wait while the Setup installs the CoIDE on your computer.

Setting up the GCC Compiler
Before using the CoIDE to implement a project it is necessary to rst congure the GCC compiler
and debugger. The following steps show how to install the compiler.
Step 1. Refer to the CooCox’s web site http://www.coocox.com/CoIDE/Compiler_Settings.html to
download the GCC compiler. After downloading, install the software.
Step 2. After launching the CooCox CoIDE, click "Select Toolchain Path" under the Project menu
to open the Select Toolchain Path dialog.

Step 3. Click the “Browse” button, select the folder which contains the arm-none-eabi-gcc.exe and
the other gcc excute les. Click the “OK” button to complete.

Installing the USB Debug Adapter
After the CoIDE has been installed, the e-Link32 debug adapter driver must also be installed. The
following steps show how to install the driver.
Step 1. Get the latest version of the driver from the Holtek website or the Holtek supplied
CD-ROM. The filename is similar to “e-Link32-USB_Driver_vnnn.exe” where “nnn”
represents the version number.
Step 2. Execute the installation program of the driver by double-clicking on “e-Link32-USB_
Driver_vnnn.exe”. Press the “Next” button to continue when the screen below appears.

Step 3. Select the destination location where the driver is to be installed and then click the “Next”
button to continue.

Step 5. Setup has nished installing on your computer.

Below are the conguration steps for the e-Link32 USB driver.
Step 1. Connect the e-Link32 to the host PC via the USB port.
Step 2. The system will detect a USB device and starts the driver installation procedure.
Step 3. Specify the driver path manually according to the USB debug adapter.
“C:\Program Files\Holtek HT32 Series\e-Link32 USB Driver\” – for e-Link32

Connecting to The Target Board
The target board can be powered via the USB port or a 5V DC adaptor by changing the on-board
jumpers. Refer to the corresponding target board documentation for details.
The e-Link32 USB debug adapter, that is connected to the target board SWD interface via the
ARM®2.54mm pitch 10-pin connector, helps to download and debug the embedded software onto
the target hardware.
The following gure shows the host PC, USB debug adapter and target board connection.

CooCox CoIDE Quick Start
CooCox provides a complete development tool, “CoIDE”, that can create a project, edit C code,
setup the development tools, implement connections and perform tests. Visit the CooCox web site
http://www.coocox.org for more information.
Create and Save New Project
To create a new project, follow the steps below:
1. Double click on the “CoIDE” shortcut or click “Start → All Programs → CooCox Software →
CoIDE” to run the CoIDE.
2. Choose “Project → New Project” to create a new CoIDE project in the menu.

3. A “New Project” dialog will pop up. Specify the name and path of the project and press the
“Finish” button. The related information and les can then be found in the “Project” window.

4. Select Holtek manufacturer for the project.

5. Select chip, for example: HT32F1755. The right side will display the corresponding chip
information.

6. Check a component. For example, select “GPIO”. The CoIDE will automatically check the
components which the checked component depend upon.

Setting Project Options
The following section describes how to setup the USB debug adapter and Flash Loader.
Congure the USB Debug Adapter
The following is the method to congure the CoIDE USB debug adapter. This example will use the
e-Link32.
1. Connect the e-Link32 to the PC.
2. Click the Debug Conguration button to open the conguration dialog.

3. Click “{PROJECT NAME}.conguration” in the left side of the Debug Conguration dialog to
open the conguration page.

4. Select e-Link32 as the adapter in the Debugger tab. If “Run to main()” is checked, the application
will rst be run to “main()” in “Debug mode”.
