Troubleshooting
What is Happening Why? What Should Be Done?
Battery drain. Step control unit not
shutting off.
1. Remove the 4-way and 2-way connector.
2. Place a voltmeter between the red and yellow motor wires at
the 2-way connector.
3. Reconnect the 4-way connector.
4. Turn the step lockout switch to the "on" position.
5. If any voltage registers on the meter for more than five
seconds, the control unit is not shutting off and may be
defective.
6. Switch the voltmeter leads back and forth between the red and
yellow motor wires to make sure no voltage registers.
• If any voltage registers, disconnect the 4-way connector to
keep the step motor from overheating.
• If zero voltage is present, the control unit has shut off and is
normal.
Step does not work.
Low supply voltage.
Check battery voltage and condition.
• Battery must have a no-load voltage of approximately 12.6 volts.
• Make sure the battery connections are clean and secure.
• Recharge or replace the battery, then retest the step for proper
operation.
Poor ground connections. Clean and tighten all ground connections.
Inspect ground wires for cuts and nicks, replace as necessary.
Step's control-to-vehicle
ground connection lost.
Step operates erratically.
Low supply voltage.
Check battery voltage and condition.

operation.
Poor ground connections. Clean and tighten all ground connections.
Inspect ground wires for cuts and nicks, replace as necessary.
Converter output
inadequate.
Check converter output. Converter MUST be capable of
producing a minimum of 30 amps for proper step operation.
Converter improperly
filtered for clean DC voltage. Contact converter manufacturer.
Maintenance
Step Assembly Lubrication
Clean all mud, salt, and road grime from the step before lubricating. Lubricate all moving parts every 30 days
with a good quality moisture and heat resistant penetrating grease.
NOTE: Silicone lubricants and WD-40® are not recommended for use. They evaporate and dry the mating
surfaces, which leaves them vulnerable to the elements.
Maintain clean, dry electrical connections at the 2-way and 4-way connectors and any butt connections
leading from the 4-way connector to the vehicle. A small dab of dielectric grease at the connections, and
replacing corroded butt connections with heat shrink type crimp style automotive connectors, will help
maintain a good electrical source for the step.
Maintenance In A Salt Environment
When exposed to a salt environment, routinely spray the step with fresh water to maintain the step's finish.
