1: PRODUCT OVERVIEW

1.1 Product Introduction

Congratulations on your purchase of the Luxul XMS-1008P Gigabit Ethernet

Smart POE Switch, featuring XenSmart™ network management. The XenSmart

management interface provides a powerful, yet simple method for setting up and

optimizing an intelligent home or ofﬁ ce network. The XMS-1008P features power-

ful network optimization capabilities, including extensive support for port manage-

ment, port security, Quality of Service (QoS), VLAN conﬁ guration, port trunking and

15.4W of available power per port. Other features such as 802.1X authentication,

Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), IGMP Snooping, static MAC address table,

and port trafﬁ c statistics further enable a robust, powerful network environment.

The XMS-1008P provides 8 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ-45 ports and 2 SFP optical/cop-

per module expansion ports. The SFP ports can be used as uplinks for extending

the network between switches or for long range communications and extensions.

Optical ﬁ ber can be used to efﬁ ciently deliver data at distances of up to 49 miles as

opposed to the 300 foot limitation of standard twisted pair Ethernet.

2: HARDWARE DESCRIPTION

2.1 Front Panel

The front panel of the XMS-1008P switch includes 8 1000Mbps RJ45 and 2 SFP ex-

pansion ports on the right side and LED indicators on the left side. Each 1000Mbps

port has one Link/Activity LED, one 1000Mbps LED and one POE LED, there are also

two SFP LEDs, one Power LED, one System LED and a reset button.

Status indicators

Each port has one Link/Activity LED, one 1000Mbps LED and one POE LED. In

addition, there are two SFP LEDs, one Power LED, one System LED, as well as a Reset

button to reboot the device or restore factory default settings. The green LED

indicators show the working status of the switch. The following table describes the

LED functionality:

SYS On Indicates that the XMS-1008P is running normally.

Flashing The XMS-1008P is restoring default settings.

Off The XMS-1008P is in startup and initialization process

or is not on.

At startup, port LEDs will ﬂ ash for 1 second as a self test.

Reset Button

The Reset button (Located at the lower left corner of the front panel) is used to clear the

current settings of the switch and restore factory default settings.

How to Use the Reset Button

To Hard Reset the Switch: With the XMS-1008P powered on, press the Reset

button.

CAUTION: DO NOT hold the button as this will factory default

the switch

To Restore the Default Settings: With the XMS-1008P powered on, press and

hold the Reset button until the status of the System LED shows the follow-

ing: On – ﬂ ashing – off. You can now release the Reset button, and the switch

automatically restores the factory default settings. When the System LED comes

on again, the XMS-1008P will be set to factory defaults.

CAUTION: Please note this will remove any conﬁ guration done to the

switch prior to Reset.

Network Ports

There are 8 10/100/1000Mbps RJ-45 ports (Ports 1~8), that support Auto MDI/

MDIX.

Two Gigabit SFP optical/copper module expansion ports with support for hot-

swapping of the SFP modules.

NOTE: The SFP expansion ports cannot support optical connections

until equipped with an SFP (Mini GBIC) optical module.

NOTE: When powering up, the port LEDs corresponding to the optical

interface may take a moment to initialize. This is normal as the

XMS-1008P does not detect the optical connection until after

the initialization and startup of internal software systems are

completed.

TIP: To extend your wired network connections beyond 300 feet, an

optical connection will be required. Please contact your Luxul

representative or go to our website to learn more about optical

ﬁ ber, SFP optical modules and optical network installation.

2.2 Rear Panel

The rear panel provides an AC input socket and power on/off switch as shown be-

low. Use the included power cable to connect the XMS-1008P to a surge protected

outlet. The built-in high-performance switching power supply of the XMS-1008P

supports an input range of: AC 100 V ~ 220V, 50 Hz ~ 60 HZ.

3 INSTALLATION PREPARATION

3.1 System and Environmental Requirements

Network cables to connect the XMS-1008P to Ethernet enabled devices

A computer supporting TCP/IP and equipped with a Web browser. Supported

Web browser versions include Microsoft IE 7.0 and up, Safari 1.0 and up or Mozilla

Firefox 1.0 and up. The Web browser is used to conﬁ gure the XMS-1008P.

Power must be AC 100V ~ 220V, 50Hz ~ 60Hz.

Temperature of the operating environment should be: 32F~113F (0C~45C). Place

the switch away from heat generating devices. For best performance and heat

dissipation/ventilation, make sure there is adequate space around the switch.

Humidity of the operating environment should be: 5%-95% non-condensing. Do

not place the switch in an extremely dirty or damp location.

Keep the switch away from strong electromagnetic ﬁ elds (i.e. Air Conditioner

compressors, ﬂ uorescent light ballasts, CRT monitors/televisions, etc.), and free

from vibration, dust and direct sun light.

3.2 Before Connecting to the Network

The XMS-1008P can be rack-mounted or used as a desktop switch. Before con-

necting to the network, please be aware of the following requirements:

Install the XMS-1008P in a stable/safe place to avoid any possible damage

Make sure there is adequate space around the XMS-1008P for adequate ventila-

tion and proper heat dissipation. It is recommended to have at least 4-6 inches

around all sides.

Do not place heavy articles on the XMS-1008P.

Power outlets should be within 5 feet of the XMS-1008P.

Verify the ground connection of the outlet is functioning properly.

Check the power cord to conﬁ rm a secure connection.

Avoid placement in direct sunlight.

When installing the XMS-1008P on a ﬂ at surface, attach the rubber feet to the

bottom of the device to avoid scratching the surface.

4 XMS-1008P INSTALLATION

4. 1 Installation on Desktop/Shelf

As shown below, attach the four rubber footpads to 4 corner indentations on the

bottom of the XMS-1008P. Place the switch horizontally on a solid, level platform.

4.2 Installation in a Rack

The XMS-1008P is suitable for 19-inch rack installation. With the included L brack-

ets, it can be conveniently installed into a server or audio rack. As shown below, use

three screws to attach the L-shaped brackets on either sides of the XMS-1008P, and

horizontally insert the switch into a free space within the rack. Use your desired

hardware to afﬁ x the switch supports to the rack.

4.3 Network Connections

The XMS-1008P supports 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet; 10/100 Mbps half/full-

duplex mode and 1000 Mbps full-duplex mode. All RJ-45 ports support Auto MDI/

MDIX and can be used as ordinary ports or as Uplink ports. Any RJ-45 port can be

used to connect the XMS-1008P to an Ethernet enabled device (including servers,

routers, and other switches) without a crossover cable.

The XMS-1008P offers 2 SFP optical/copper module expansion ports. When

Gigabit SFP optical modules are inserted, these interfaces can support optical ﬁ ber

cables to extend the Gigabit network up to 49 miles—enabling the network to

extend beyond the 300 foot limitation of twisted pair Ethernet. When Gigabit SFP

copper modules are inserted, the standard Ethernet limitations apply.

4.4 Network Transmission Media

For the RJ-45 ports, Category-5, super Category-5 or Category-6 unshielded twisted

pair (CAT5/CAT5e/CAT6 UTP) should be used. For best results, it is recommended

that Category-6 shielded twisted pair be used to ensure stable data transmission at

1000 Mbps. Optical ﬁ ber/cable should be selected based on the wavelength of the

SFP optical module to be used.

CAUTION: Make sure only one Uplink channel exists between switches

or between the XMS-1008P and a router. Otherwise, loops

can occur and result in network failure.

5 CONFIGURATION

5.1 Login

The XMS-1008P is not equipped with internal DHCP server. However, if you are

connecting to the XBR-2300 Enterprise Dual-WAN Router with the default LAN

address, the conﬁ guration will be automatic. Otherwise, the IP address of the

computer for login and conﬁ guration will need to be manually conﬁ gured. The

table below lists the default parameters of the XMS-1008P.

1. Plug an Ethernet cable into any of the switch ports

2. Plug the other end into the Ethernet port of your computer

3. Power on the switch.

4. Check to see that the IP address of the computer is within this network seg-

ment: 192.168.0.xxx (“xxx” ranges 2~254. For example, 192.168.0.50). For IP address

settings, refer to Appendix 2.

5. Open the Web browser and enter 192.168.0.3. The switch login window appears,

as shown below.

6. Enter the user name and password (default user name and default password are

both set as “admin”), and then click “OK” to login to the switch conﬁ guration

window.

Click any menu item on the left to view and/or modify the corresponding settings

or functions.

5.2 Status

Status: Displays the current system status of the XMS-1008P

Hardware Version: Hardware version of the switch

Firmware Version: Software version of the switch

DHCP Client: Status of the DHCP client, set at “Disable” by default

IP Address: 192.168.0.3 by default

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 by default

Gateway: 0.0.0.0 by default

MAC Address: MAC address of the switch

ARL Aging Time: Aging time of the MAC address table, 300 seconds by default

5.3 Port Settings

In this screen you can set the operating mode of each port. Six working modes

are available for any port: 10 Mbps half-duplex, 10 Mbps full-duplex, 100 Mbps

half-duplex, 100 Mbps full-duplex, 1000 Mbps full-duplex and auto negotiation.

By default, the auto negotiation mode is enabled for all ports. In this mode, upon

switch power up, each port automatically communicates and negotiates with its

connected device, to determine the optimal operating mode. For other operating

modes, manual setting is required and the settings should match the operating

mode of the connected device; otherwise communication may fail. Port settings

also affect the port mirroring and Trunk group functions.

Port Conﬁ guration: Basic port conﬁ guration options for the XMS-1008P include

port enable/disable, operating mode and ﬂ ow control. The following describes the

conﬁ guration functionality:

Port: Displays the corresponding port number for viewing or changing settings.

All 8 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports are available for conﬁ guration.

Admin: Either enables or disables the corresponding port. If “Disable” is selected,

the port is no longer operational.

CAUTION: Do not disable ports unless necessary.

Auto Negotiate: If “Disable” is selected, you must manually specify the speed

and duplex the port will use.

NOTE: In order to set or change “Speed Duplex” settings, you must

“Disable” the auto-negotiation function.

Speed Duplex: Select 10 Mbps half-duplex, 10 Mbps full-duplex, 100 Mbps half-

duplex, 100 Mbps full-duplex or 1000 Mbps full-duplex mode for the port.

Flow Control: Support for IEEE802.3x full-duplex ﬂ ow control and half-duplex

backpressure ﬂ ow control disabled by default (if “Enabled” the XMS-1008P will

automatically adjust the ﬂ ow control mode depending on the duplex mode).

Port Status: Lists the current settings of all ports, as shown above.

5.3.2 Rate Limit

Rate Limit Conﬁ guration: The XMS-1008P allows the user to set limits on how

much bandwidth is allocated to each port. This feature prevents a devices or user

from consuming excessive bandwidth and can be used to guarantee good quality

bandwidth to all client devices connected to the switch.

Port: Displays the corresponding port number for viewing or changing settings.

All 8 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ports are available for conﬁ guration.

Downlink/Uplink: Control the receive/transmit data rates by port. Available

rates are: 128 Kbps; 256 Kbps; 384 Kbps; 512 Kbps; 640 Kbps; 768 Kbps; 896 Kbps;

1008 Kbps; 1152 Kbps; 1280 Kbps; 1408 Kbps; 1536 Kbps; 1664 Kbps; 1792 Kbps; 1920

Kbps; 2048 Kbps; 2176 Kbps; 2304 Kbps; 832 Kbps; 2560 Kbps; 2688 Kbps; 2816

Kbps; 2944 Kbps; 3072 Kbps; 3200 Kbps; 3328 Kbps; 3456 Kbps; 3584 Kbps; 3712

NOTE: If the selected rate is higher than the actual connection rate of

the client device, the device will operate at its maximum data

rate.

Rate Limit: Displays the bandwidth control status of all ports, as shown below.

5.3.3 Storm Control

Storm Control: Suppresses the transfer of bandwidth limiting broadcast packets

through the switch. When broadcast packets reach the set bandwidth limitation,

the XMS-1008P automatically discards the packet to ensure a stable environment

that is free from broadcast storms.

Broadcast Rate: The allowed bandwidth rate of broadcast packets. Default is

108kb or 1mb/second.

Multicast Rate: The allowed bandwidth rate of multicast packets. Default is

108kb or 1mb/second.

NOTE: If multicast streaming is used in your environment you will want

to raise this limit from the default..

Unknown Unicast Rate (Flood): The allowed bandwidth rate of ﬂ ood packets.

Default is 108kb or 1mb/second.

CAUTION: This value should not be raised without the assistance of a

Network Administrator in determining if it is necessary.

NOTE: The XMS-1008P does not completely suppress broadcast

packets. Instead it only limits the transmission rate for broadcast

packets.

5.3.4 Statistics

Statistics: Displays the amount of data in bytes and frames that have been re-

ceived/transmitted by all ports currently in operation, as well as the number of

error frames received/transmitted by all ports in operation.

Clear: Clears all current port statistics data.

Refresh: Manually refreshes the current port statistics data. (Note: The page

does not refresh dynamically)

5.4 Mirror

Port mirroring is used to transfer the packets of one or more monitored ports to

another port, allowing a security department or administrator to monitor Internet

access, trafﬁ c ﬂ ows and packets.

The bandwidth of the monitoring port cannot be lower than that of the

monitored port.

If the monitoring port is the monitored port, the system automatically ignores

this monitored port and does not duplicate the trafﬁ c.

This function supports cross-VLAN monitoring. Monitoring is allowed even if the

monitored port and the monitoring port belong to different VLAN groups.

5.5 POE

POE (Power Over Ethernet) refers to the ability to provide power and data using

one Ethernet line to a device. The XMS-1008P can deliver power to a remotely

connected device through a standard CAT5 or better Ethernet cable.

Advantages of POE

Flexible: The XMS-1008P POE switch can provide up to 15.4 watts to all 8 POE

ports, allowing you to have devices powered from all available port.

Simple: Run just one CAT5 (or better) Ethernet line to the device. No need for

additional power drops.

Remote Management: Easy power on/off and reset options for devices located

in hard to reach places.

A POE system consists of a POE Supply Device and a Powered Device

1. POE Supply Device: This device consists of a power supply and POE SUPPLY

DEVICE module that implements the functions of detecting a Powered Device,

obtaining Powered Device power requirements, remote power delivery,

monitoring of power delivery and disabling power.

2. Powered Device: Classiﬁ ed as either a) standard POWERED DEVICE; or b) non-

standard POWERED DEVICE. Standard POWERED DEVICE refers to any 802.3af

compliant POWERED DEVICE. Non-Standard refers to any other POWERED

DEVICE type other that 802.3af compliant.

NOTE: Some Non-Standard devices will not work with this switch

as they cannot respond to the switch with their power

requirements.

5.5.1 POE Conﬁ guration

This page allows you to control port power distribution, enabling a speciﬁ c port to

provide power. The conﬁ guration options are displayed below:

There are three power management modes:

1) Powered Device Based Priority

2) Static Allocation

3) Dynamic allocation.

Powered Device Based Priority: the power allocation is

automatically determined by the XMS-1008P according to the class

of the Powered Device. For instance, if class 0 or 4 is detected, then

the allocated power it receives is the actual power consumed by the

Powered Device. If class 1 is detected, then the allocated power it

Static Allocation: Power allocation is determined by the manually

conﬁ gured value per port. If the consumed power of a Powered

Device exceeds the manually conﬁ gured value on the port, the port

will terminate power allocation and attempt to re-initialize.

Dynamic Allocation: Power allocation is determined by the

consumed power of the Powered Device. If the consumed power of

the Powered Device exceeds 15.4W, the port will terminate power

allocation and attempt to re-initialize.

PSE Temperature Operation temperature of the POE Supply Device

Priority Should the utilized power exceed 120W, the termination of power

to devices is allocated according to port priority. Each port has

high, medium and low priority levels. The system prioritizes power

distribution to the port with highest priority level. By default, all

ports are at low priority

NOTE: If priority is not speciﬁ ed, priority is allocated

by port number with 1 being the highest

priority and 8 being the lowest priority

Static Allocation

This feature takes effect in static allocation mode only. You can

conﬁ gure a speciﬁ c amount of power for each port. A maximum

power output of 15.4W is permitted per port with the total output

not to exceed 120W

5.6 VLAN

A VLAN or Virtual Local Area Networks can be used to establish secure autono-

mous broadcast/multicast domains. A VLAN is used to divide a network into

multiple network segments and/or to shrink broadcast domains for application or

departmental optimization. Within a VLAN, all Ethernet packets, such as unicast,

multicast, broadcast and unknown unicast packets will be transferred only to other

devices within the VLAN group. A VLAN can be used to change the topological

structure of the network without any movement of a network device or change of

network connections. You can modify the VLAN settings of a device for example,

to “move” a device from the VLAN of one group to that of another group. This

helps create secure, optimized departmental (or function/application speciﬁ c)
