Th MV4530 Cooling Syst m Pr ssur T st Kit is d sign d to

cooling syst m. It contains quipm nt to manually pr ssuriz
and monitor a cooling syst m. L aks ar indicat d by a drop
in pr ssur ov r a f w s conds or minut s. Th location of
xt rnal l ak(s) is pinpoint d by th visibl s pag of fluid
r sulting from th pr ssur . Int rnal l aks, which may not b
visibl , typically indicat a blown h ad gask t or damag d
block or h ad, and can b diagnos d by monitoring th
pr ssur during a quick “ ngin on” t st.
Th MV4530 can also b us d to t st cooling syst m pr ssur
caps, which utiliz a r li f valv for prot ction against ov r-
pr ssurization. A malfunctioning cap can caus ov r- or und r-
pr ssurization of th cooling syst m, l ading to ov rh ating
and/or s v r ngin damag . This t st is p rform d using th
pr ssur pump includ d in this kit, how v r it also r quir s cap
t st adapt rs that ar not includ d with this kit, and must b

P rforming cooling syst m t sts using th MV4530 is simpl
and straightforward if you follow th instructions. How v r,
always k p in mind that you ar working with a syst m that
may b full of cold or hot fluid that is und r pr ssur and just
waiting to b xp ll d. If you ar t sting an ngin that is hot
and/or pr ssuriz d, always stop to think b for pr ssing th
r li f valv , r moving a cap, or disconn cting a hos or oth r
compon nt.

Basics of Testing
Wh n d ciding wh r to conn ct to th cooling syst m,
first look for th radiator and d t rmin if it has a fill n ck
and pr ssur cap. This is common on about half of US
manufactur d v hicl s, and almost all Asian manufactur d
v hicl s, and would b th first choic for conn cting. If th
radiator is clos d and inacc ssibl , th n th conn ction will
b mad through a coolant bottl . Som automotiv cooling
syst ms utiliz a coolant ov rflow bottl that is not part of th
s al d syst m. Att mpting to t st th cooling syst m through
this bottl will not conn ct you into th s al d syst m, and will
simply v nt th t st pr ssur to th atmosph r . This typ of
ov rflow bottl is asily r cogniz d b caus it typically utiliz s
a snap-on styl cap or a thr ad d cap that is op n to atmos-
ph r . Th r ar no adapt rs that ar d sign d to fit this typ
of coolant ov rflow bottl . A t st conn ction should b mad
through a radiator or coolant bottl with a bayon t or thr ad d
styl of cap d sign d to maintain a sp cific pr ssur in th
cooling syst m.
Adapters
Th MV4530 includ s four cooling syst m adapt rs that fit
th radiators and coolant bottl s on th vast majority of US
and Asian manufactur d v hicl s, and v n som Europ an
v hicl s. An adapt r is r quir d to conn ct th t st quipm nt
to th cooling syst m of th sp cific mak and mod l b ing
t st d. Onc th corr ct adapt r is id ntifi d for th v hicl
b ing s rvic d, it can b us d to p rform all of th t sts outlin d
in this manual xc pt for th cap pr ssur t st. To p rform a
t st on a v hicl application not cov r d by on of th four
includ d adapt rs, or to p rform a cap pr ssur t st, additional
adapt rs must b purchas d. Adapt rs ar availabl for virtually
v ry mak and mod l of car or light truck, and can b
purchas d individually or as part of an adapt r kit from an

Static Pressure Test (Engine Off)
For diagnosing:
Cooling syst m l aks
Set-up & Procedure:
1. Ensur th cooling syst m is cool and not pr ssuriz d. Car fully
r mov th radiator or coolant bottl pr ssur cap (Fig. 1).
2. Ch ck to s that th radiator or coolant bottl is fill d to th
prop r l v l, and ch ck hos s for visual damag or l aks. Fill
and r pair as n c ssary prior to t sting.
3. S l ct th corr ct Cooling Syst m Adapt r for th application.
R f r to th Adapt r S l ction Guid includ d in th kit.
4. Apply wat r or coolant to th rubb r gask t and/or o-ring on
th adapt r, and install th adapt r in plac of th pr ssur
cap (Fig. 2).
5. Install th Pr ssur Pump onto th Syst m Adapt r using th
quick-conn ct. Mak sur th quick-conn ct sl v snaps
forward to lock th conn ction (Fig. 3).
6. Op rat th Pr ssur Pump until th n dl on th pr ssur
gaug mov s to th nd of th color d band indicating th
appropriat pr ssur rang of th cap (s Chart A) (Fig. 4).
7. Watch th gaug for a short p riod of tim . If th pr ssur
r ading drops, a l ak is pr s nt.
8. With th syst m still pr ssuriz d, p rform a visual insp ction
of th ntir cooling syst m. Ch ck hos s and conn ctions for
s pag , which would indicat a l ak. R turn to th gaug and
ch ck th r ading onc mor .
9. Most l aks ar xt rnal, and visibl s pag occurs. How v r,
a drop in pr ssur with no visibl l akag can indicat a blown
h ad gask t or crack d block, wh r fluid l aks into th
combustion chamb r. Visually insp ct oil and transmission fluid
for signs of coolant. Proc d to th Dynamic Pressure Test for
b tt r m thods of diagnosing int rnal l aks.
10. Wh n t sting is compl t , r l as th pr ssur in th syst m by
pr ssing th Pr ssur R li f Valv locat d on th pump hos n ar
th quick-conn ct coupl r (Fig. 5).
