The Nortel Application Gateway 1000 delivers business applications to
Internet-enabled IP telephones and wireless devices. It is an open,
standards-based network platform that supports simultaneous voice and
data services and customizes these services to run on a broad range of
devices. The Application Gateway is designed to reside virtually
anywhere in the enterprise network. IP telephones are programmed to
access the Application Gateway for applications. The Application
Gateway is programmed to access the source applications and securely
deliver them to IP telephones.

Voice Office Application Suite Enhancements
Release 6.0 provides an improved experience for IP phone users and
provides built-in support for broadcasting and paging across multiple
Application Gateways. This release also provides an open XML API that
developers can use to send automated alerts from a third-party
application to IP phone users.

Increased Application Support for Nortel IP Phones
•The Voice Office Application Suite and transformed applications are
now available for Nortel IP Phones 1120E and 1140E, as well as the
Nortel IP Phones 2007, 2004, 2002, and 2001. Firmware requirements
and availability are as follows:
•All supported IP phones receive broadcast alerts.
•All supported IP phones receive pages; most phones can send pages.
For details on phone support, refer to the Pre-Installation Checklist.
Voice Office Language Support
•The phone user interface for all Voice Office applications is now also
available in the following languages:
French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Spanish

•The language for the Voice Office interface is set through the IP Phone
UI Language menu on the Operation > General page of the
Administration Tool.
•All phone user quick reference guides are translated into the
supported languages.
Broadcast Server Improvements
•The Voice Office menu includes an Alerts entry that provides access to
a list of the active broadcast alerts. The Application Gateway
automatically updates the list as alerts expire or are removed by the
sender.
Note If you use the Application Gateway Administration Tool to remove the
Alerts entry from the Voice Office menu, Broadcast Server operation is
disabled.
•Broadcast Server supports three alert priorities:
– Emergency: Immediately take over the phone screen and audio.
– Normal: Pushed to a phone when it is idle.
– Background: Pushed directly to the Alerts list in the Voice Office
menu.
•Broadcast Server now supports Unicode so that alerts can be
composed and broadcast in any language.
•Broadcast Server architecture improvements reduce latency in
message scheduling and improve overall broadcast performance.
Broadcasts and Pages Across Multiple Application Gateways
•Sites wanting to broadcast and page across more than 500 IP phones
can now group Application Gateways into a cluster.
•A cluster enables the IP phones to send alerts and pages to distribution
lists and zones that include phones from all Application Gateways in
the cluster.
•The same Broadcast Server is configured for each Application
Gateway in the cluster.

Improved Support for Directories in CSV Format
Express Directory now supports up to three telephone numbers specified
in a CSV-formatted directory. You can use the Operation > Voice Office >
Directory page to provide a label to be displayed with each telephone
number. You can also use the Directory page to indicate whether directory
searches are to be based on first name, last name, or both first and last
name.
Refer to the online Help or the Voice Office Application Suite Configuration
Guide for CSV file requirements.
Open XML API for Developing Automated Alerting Applications
•You can now use the same Push XML API that Broadcast Server uses
to communicate with the Application Gateway to send alerts from
other applications to IP phones.

•Alerting applications could send information such as call center
statistics, sales updates, or automated IT alerts to IP phones.
•The alerting application communicates with the Application Gateway
over HTTP using XML strings.
•The XML API supports the composition, prioritization, scheduling,
and distribution of alerts, as well as the maintenance of distribution
lists.
•An alert can include a title, image, text, soft keys, and audio. The soft
keys can dial a number or display a Web URL.
For details about the XML API, refer to Appendix A of the Broadcast Server
User Guide.
“Click-to-Call” with the New PC-Based Smart Agent
•The newest addition to the Voice Office Application Suite is Smart
Agent, which enables a Windows PC user connected to an Application
Gateway to dial a number by clicking it in the following applications:
– Internet Explorer 6.0 and higher
To initiate a call, Smart Agent users click phone numbers that
appear on Web pages. Web page controls, such as buttons and link
text, can also be customized to dial a number when clicked.
– Outlook 2000/2003/XP, Outlook Express 6.0, Eudora 6.2
To initiate a call, Smart Agent users click phone numbers that
appear in HTML or text email messages received after the user
installed Smart Agent.
•Works seamlessly with your call server configuration.

•Provides user authentication against a configured LDAP source. Users
can also be created locally to supplement the LDAP source.
•Is configured through the same Administration Tool as the
Application Gateway.
•Enables you to specify the prefix to be dialed for outside calls, as well
as the show/hide Caller ID prefixes for your area.
•Can be integrated with custom Web applications by adding a
JavaScript onClick () event to Web page elements such as link text,
buttons, images, and asp.net controls.
•Automatically installs when a user visits a Web URL provided by the
administrator.
•Automatically updates when it connects to the Application Gateway
and a new version is available.
•Communicates securely with the Application Gateway over SSL.
•Works with IPSec and SSL VPN clients, including the Citrix Access
Gateway.
•Provides the phone user a log of the calls initiated through Smart
Agent.
Note Smart Agent currently does not support telephone numbers in
International Direct Distance Dialing (IDDD) format. We plan to support
that feature in the next release.
For details about Smart Agent, refer to the Smart Agent Configuration Guide
and the online Help available from the Smart Agent application.
Guest Services
•Displays custom advertising and information services on Nortel IP
Phone 2007.
•Manages the applications displayed on the phones, including rotating
slideshows and speed-dial buttons. You can configure each slideshow
image and button to either dial a telephone number or link a user to a
related Web page or application.
•Provided in two packages:
– The Guest Services Silver Package includes a full-screen slideshow
and/or button panel, with built-in navigation.

– The Guest Services Gold Package provides those options plus a
split-screen slideshow with button panel, optional integration
with a property management system for the display of guest name
and room number, and broadcast alerts.
Improved Application Gateway Logging
•Enables administrators to manage and view Application Gateway logs
by using the same third-party tools as they use for other system logs.
•Supports three log levels: critical, error, and warning.
•Supports remote, real-time logging to a syslog server.
•Automatically rotates system logs, based on reaching a file size limit
of 1 megabyte. The Application Gateway retains up to 24 archive files,
plus the active log file, and replaces the oldest archive file when the
maximum number of log files is reached.
Log rotations eliminate the current issue of the Application Gateway
overwriting the system log when it crashes. Log rotations also enable
administrators to archive logs to improve troubleshooting and to help
avoid filling up the Application Gateway hard drive.
•Supports scheduled remote archiving of log files (in gzip format) via
ftp.
Voice Office Application Suite Overview
The Application Gateway provides Voice Office Application Suite
capabilities for users of Nortel Communication Server 1000 systems. The
Voice Office Application Suite enables enterprises to leverage their IP
telephony investments and increase workforce productivity by delivering
converged applications to the screens and speakers of Nortel IP phones.
Voice Office applications include:
Express Directory provides an LDAP-based, organization-wide directory
with high speed, real time pruning.
Visual Voicemail enables users to see a visual list of their voice messages
with the ability to select the most important ones to review, without
having to listen to each message in a serial fashion. During message
playback, the user can play, pause, rewind, etc. using labeled soft keys
rather than using cryptic control codes.

Zone Paging enables users to page through groups of IP phones in specific
zones without the expense of installing an overhead paging system.
Broadcast Server delivers alerts such as emergency, IT, and weather
broadcasts in the form of text and audio messages to IP phones.
Application Gateway Capacity
The Application Gateway supports 500 concurrent sessions.
•Each licensed IP phone occupies one session. Each mobile device
currently holding a license occupies one session.
•Broadcast Server capacity is tied to licensing. Each Application
Gateway supports 500 concurrent broadcasts (500 broadcasts of one
alert, 250 broadcasts of two alerts, and so on). For a cluster, the
maximum broadcast distribution is the Application Gateway capacity
times the number of Application Gateways in the cluster.
•Zone Paging supports a maximum of 512 zones and a maximum of 500
users per Application Gateway. The maximum number of users that
can be paged at one time is based on the number of installed licenses.
Transformed Applications
The Application Gateway and Design Studio tool can be used to transform
certain HTML or XML-based business application for use on Nortel IP
telephones. Applications include corporate directories, employee
time-clocks, ERP applications, inventory reports, Oracle back-office
databases, and more. Application Menus are used to build an organized
view of multiple business applications available to a user’s IP telephones
and mobile devices.
The Design Studio application creates transformation instructions that
convert large-screen business applications into a format appropriate for
Nortel IP phones and a wide variety of mobile and wireless devices,
including Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) such as Palm, Pocket PC, and
Research in Motion (RIM) devices.

Important Security Information
Improper configuration of the Application Gateway can result in a
security risk. Before you deploy the Application Gateway, verify that it
does not have access to protected intranet sites.
Be aware of the following security considerations:
•Protected servers
Do not put the Application Gateway on the same subnet as protected
servers. By default, the Application Gateway proxies all web pages. As
a result, the Application Gateway provides access to computers on the
same subnet as the web servers that are configured to work with the
Application Gateway. For example, suppose an Application Gateway
has an external IP address of 24.221.1.1 and an internal IP address of
192.168.1.31. On the same subnet, you have an intranet server
protected from outside access, with an IP address of 192.168.1.20. You
can access all ports on the protected intranet server through the
Application Gateway by using this URL:
http://24.221.1.1/http://192.168.1.20.
•IP phone/Application Gateway connection
We recommend that you locate the connection between an IP phone
and the Application Gateway behind a firewall.
•SSL to non-SSL redirects
When a web page in Design Studio is redirected to an SSL site (HTTPS)
from a non-SSL site (HTTP), the connection between Design Studio
and the Application Gateway is not secure. We recommend that you
locate the connection between Design Studio and the Application
Gateway behind a firewall.

Network and Configuration Requirements
Customer Network Quality Level
To ensure a high level of performance, we recommend that the customer
network maintain a minimum quality level as follows:
•Less than 100 ms delay
•Less than 20 ms of jitter
•Less than 0.5% packet loss
Minimum Requirements for IP Phones
Application Gateway operation requires the following Nortel software
releases, or greater. See the Pre-Installation Checklist for firmware release
requirements and a table of the applications available for each supported
phone.
•Communication Server 1000, release 3, 4.0, and 4.5.
•Nortel Messaging release 2 (for Visual Voicemail).
Nortel Messaging operation with Visual Voicemail requires that you
enable the Desktop and Web Messaging mailbox feature in Nortel
Messaging Manager.
Deployment and Operation Notes
Licensing of IP Phones 1120E, 1140E, and 2007
You must have a license for each IP Phone that is to use Voice Office
applications. Currently, licenses for IP Phones 1120E, 1140E, and 2007 are
handled differently from the other supported IP phones, as follows:
•For IP Phones 2004, 2002, and 2001, licenses are not specific to the
phone model.
For example, if you have 500 of the IP Phone 2004 and 300 of the IP
Phone 2001, you purchase a total of 800 licenses. The Application
Gateway does not distinguish whether an IP Phone 2004 or 2001 is
occupying a license.

•For IP Phones 1120E, 1140E, and 2007, licenses are specific to the IP
Phone 2007. When you purchase licenses for your IP phones, you must
indicate the total number of IP Phones 1120E/1140E/2007 to be
licensed.
For example, if you have 500 of the IP Phone 2004, 300 of the IP Phone
2001, and 100 of the IP Phone 2007, you must purchase a total of 900
licenses and indicate that 100 of the licenses are for IP Phone [phone]
of those licenses are available to the non IP Phone 2007 and 100 of
those licenses are available only to the IP Phone 2007.
Citrix plans to change IP Phone 2007 licensing so that the IP Phone
2007 is not distinguished from the other phones for licensing.
IP Phone 2007 XAS/GXAS Mode Impact on Licensing
The IP Phone 2007 has two operating modes:
•XAS (text-only user interface)
When the IP Phone 2007 is configured for XAS mode, the Application
Gateway interacts with the phone as if it were a Phase 2 IP Phone 2004.
An IP Phone 2007 in XAS mode has access to all Voice Office and
transformed applications.
•GXAS (graphical user interface; preferred configuration)
When the IP Phone 2007 is configured for GXAS mode, the
Application Gateway delivers supported applications using a
graphical interface. Applications currently supported for the IP Phone
2007 are Express Directory, Visual Voicemail, Zone Paging, and
transformed applications.
Changing the configuration of an IP Phone 2007 from XAS to GXAS mode
has the following impact on licensing:
•(756) If an IP Phone 2007 in XAS mode connects to the Application
Gateway and then is changed to GXAS mode and reconnects to the
Application Gateway, the phone will occupy two licenses. The phone
will appear twice in the License Monitor and in the list of available
extensions for paging zones.
To free one of the licenses occupied by the phone, use the License
Monitor to change the extension’s status to denied.
– To open the License Monitor, go to the Operation > Advanced
page and log in when prompted.
– To change the license status of an extension, right-click the
extension and choose Toggle Status.

General
•In an network environment where more than one Call Pilot is
installed, an Application Gateway is required for each Call Pilot.
•The Voice Office Application Suite does not support operation with
Nortel Virtual Office.
•To support the creation of an IP/DN map, the Application Gateway
must be on the same LAN segment as the call server. The Application
Gateway must communicate with the call server via its Embedded
LAN (ELAN) to retrieve information for the IP/DN map.
•(517) For sites using Nortel Communication Server, the information
for the IP/DN map can be obtained from the signaling and call
servers. For sites using Communication Server 1000, release 4.0, you
configure a connection between the Application Gateway and one
signaling server, which provides the Application Gateway with
information from all connected call servers. For sites using two
signaling servers with Communication Server 1000, release 4.5, you
must configure a connection between the Application Gateway and
both signaling servers. If communication with signaling servers fails
or signaling servers are taken offline, the Application Gateway
operation may be impacted until the Application Gateway can
resynchronize with the signaling server.
•The Application Gateway does not support multiple appearance DNs,
that is, more than one phone with the same primary DN. If more than
one phone has the same primary extension, only one of those phones,
the one most recently registered with the Application Gateway, will
receive a page or broadcast.
Workaround: Assign a unique primary DN to each phone and use the
secondary extension for assigning multiple sets the same DN. For
example, if you have two phones with primary extension 100, change
the primary extension of one of those phones to a unique number and
also assign that phone a secondary extension of 100.
•(653) The Volume key does not work in XAS mode.
•(757) Express Directory is the only Voice Office application that can be
used with phones that are behind a Network Address Translation
(NAT) device. The Application Gateway can also deliver transformed
content to phones that are behind a NAT device.
•Because the Application Gateway must synchronize with other
servers to obtain information such as phone DN and IP address, an
extension might be temporarily unable to access a Voice Office

application, might acquire more than one license, or might lose its
session with the Application Gateway. Completion of a
synchronization resolves those transient issues.
•If a page is in progress when a synchronization completes, the page is
terminated.
•Some state information is not communicated correctly from the Call
Server to the Application Gateway. For example:
(758) a. If a user picks up the handset while in TPS mode, then
proceeds to play a Visual Voicemail through the Application Gateway,
both the dial tone provided by the Call Server and the voicemail
message will play simultaneously through the handset.
Workaround: Toggle to the TPS and press the Goodbye key to
disconnect the dial tone.
(759) b. If a user receives a phone call while listening to a Visual
Voicemail on the handset, pressing the Line in key will answer the call
through the speaker (as opposed to streaming the call to the handset).
Workaround: Press the switch hook to redirect the voice path to the
handset.
•When a phone is powered off and back on, it is in a busy state for two
minutes. When a phone rings but is not answered, the phone remains
in a busy state for 30 seconds after the phone stops ringing. While a
phone is in a busy state, phone users will see the message “Waiting on
Audio” and will need to wait until a phone is no longer busy to use
most Voice Office application functions.
•(1546) On IP Phone 2002, content that must break between multiple
screens, such as a news article, is truncated after the first screen.
Workaround: The transformation rules created in Design Studio and
uploaded to the Application Gateway must be customized for the IP
Phone 2002 display. Therefore, if the site has a mix of IP Phones 200n,
a separate Application Gateway is needed to service the IP Phone
2002, which requires transformation rules to handle multi-screen
content appropriately for the display.
•(1778) Restarting the Application Gateway from the Administration
Tool sometimes fails.
Workaround: Power cycle the Application Gateway.
•(2033) On Nortel IP Phones 1120E and 1140E (GXAS), it is not possible
to adjust the audio volume while the phone has a session with the
Application Gateway.

•(2038) On Nortel IP Phones 1120E and 1140E (XAS), pressing the
Service key to access the Voice Office menu temporarily stops one of
the ring tones so that the ringing sounds clipped.
•(2144) Tapping the IP Phone 2007 screen (GXAS) 35 times or more in a
row causes the firmware to become unresponsive.
Visual Voicemail
•(1839) In Visual Voicemail, the Call soft key is provided by the
firmware rather than by the Application Gateway. Thus, in localized
versions of Visual Voicemail, the Call soft key displays in English.
•The Application Gateway does not support VLAN and drops
UNISTIM packets if VLAN is enabled on the switch or router port
connected to the Application Gateway.
•Does not support network-wide dialing plans for forwarding voice
messages using Visual Voicemail.
•Supports only G.711 conversion for audio.
•An Application Gateway supports a maximum audio length of 6
minutes and 8 seconds for 8-bit messages. A message that exceeds the
maximum length is truncated.
•If you pick up the handset while playing a Voice Office application
audio through the speaker phone, the audio is terminated and
replaced with a dial tone.
•If you take the phone off-hook, press the Expand key to bring up the
Voice Office menu, and then attempt to make a call, the call will not go
through and you will hear only a dial tone.
Zone Paging
•(690) If a phone user takes the phone off-hook and then presses the
Release button, the phone will not receive pages. The phone must be
on-hook to receive pages.
•(738) When an IP Phone 2007 that is receiving a page is called from a
phone that is on the same or a different node, pressing the line key to
answer the call sometimes results in a one-way speech path.
Workaround: Put the call on hold and then press the line key to
re-establish a two-way speech path.

•(800) A phone will not receive a page if it is already on a call initiated
from Visual Voicemail while listening to a voicemail message.
Likewise, the phone that is on the receiving end of that call will also
not receive a page.
•(802) On Nortel IP Phones 2007, 1120E, and 1140E (GXAS), if you try
to page from the handset before turning on the microphone, the page
will not go through.
•(1594) If the speaker is engaged by pressing the Speaker key, you
cannot initiate a page.
Workaround: Either page from the handset or choose the speaker from
the soft key after you initiate the page.
•(1702) On Nortel IP Phone 2004, if the headset is being used to record
a reply to a Visual Voicemail message, incoming page audio plays
over the speaker rather than over the headset and the recording is
terminated.
•(1850, 740) On Nortel phones a page cannot be initiated if the phone is
on a call (because the audio is unavailable).
•(2040) On IP Phones 1120E and 1140E (XAS), the speech path is clipped
and/or delayed at the beginning of a page that is initiated through the
handset.
•Nested zones are not yet supported.
Broadcast Server
•The IP Phone 2002 does not display pushed title lines.
•(451) After an alert is broadcast to an IP Phone 2001, the user must
press the Line key twice to obtain a dial tone.
•(1875) Nortel IP Phones 2007, 1120E, and 1140E (GXAS) do not play the
audio tone sent with emergency alerts.
•(2156) If Broadcast Server is installed in a custom path, the _Bin folder
is not removed during uninstallation.
•(2310) Alerts that remain on the screen without expiring will continue
to accumulate on phones in GXAS mode. If a heavy volume of
long-lived alerts is delivered, the capacity of the Application Gateway
will be impacted. Please be sure that the number of current
(non-expired) alerts is kept to a reasonable level.

•For Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0, IIS hangs when
Broadcast Server attempts to upload a large .wav file. This error is due
to the lack of a defined limit on the Windows 2000 IIS 5.0 server, which
does not terminate properly when the limit is exceeded.
Workaround: Microsoft recommends an upgrade to Windows 2003 IIS
6.0 server to resolve this issue. Alternatively, downsample the audio
file to reduce its file size.
•For IIS 6.0, Broadcast Server displays the following error when
attempting to upload a large .wav file in Broadcast Server:

This error is due to the default file size limitation of 200KB on the
Windows 2003 IIS 6.0 server.
Workaround: Downsample the audio file to reduce its file size.
Alternatively, you can change the default file size limitation for IIS.
Open C:\Windows\System32\Inetsrv\metabase.XML and change
the value for AspMaxRequestEntityAllowed. The maximum size that
you set will vary depending on the amount of memory in the system
and the other applications running.
Known Issues
Voice Office Application Suite
•(353) If the Application Gateway is unaware of a phone’s DN and the
phone attempts to access the Application Gateway, the phone will not
be included in the available extensions list on Operation > Voice Office
> Zone Paging after a synchronization with the signaling server.
Workaround: Reboot the Application Gateway to refresh the available
extensions list.
•(370) The Application Gateway does not display the custom
Application Menu label or custom Exit keys on IP Phone 2007 in GXAS
mode.
•(482) VPIM information entered on IP Phone 2007 is ignored by the
Application Gateway.
•(527) The Application Gateway does not display results of the Dial
Rule on IP Phone 2007 in GXAS mode.
