This preface describes who should read the Application Gateway Hardware
Installation Guide, how it is organized, and its document conventions.
Audience
This installation guide is intended for service technicians who will install
the Application Gateway and for administrators who need to troubleshoot
the hardware.

Chapter 1
Application Gateway Overview
The Nortel Application Gateway 1000
delivers business applications to the screens
and speakers of Nortel IP telephones,
personal computers, and wireless devices
such as PDAs (personal digital assistants),
wireless Internet-enabled cell phones,
wireless e-mail devices, and pagers.
The applications delivered to Nortel IP Phones and wireless devices
include Nortel Voice Office applications, Nortel Guest Services, and
transformed business applications.
The location of an Application Gateway in a network is largely based on
the configuration of the existing network. The flexible deployment of the
Application Gateway enables you to connect it to application servers,
routers, firewalls, and switches. For information on integrating
Application Gateways into your network, refer to the Application Gateway
Network Integration Guide.

Note With the exception of installing memory upgrades, there are no
user-serviceable components in the Application Gateway. Any defective
Application Gateways should be returned to the supplier.

Power
The power cord connector is located on the left-hand corner on the rear of
the Application Gateway. When the green power LED, on the left side, is
illuminated, the power is on.The Power On/Off switch is on the front
faceplate. The power supplies are factory installed and not customer
replaceable.
Cooling
The Application Gateway has forced air cooling. The fan runs whenever
the unit is on. The air flow is front-to-back.
Card Slots
The Application Gateway has no available card slots.

Front Connectors and Media Drives
Figure 1 shows the connectors and drives on the front of the Application
Gateway.

•The front DB-9 serial port is used to connect the Application Gateway
to a computer that is capable of running terminal emulation software.
This connection is used to access the Application Gateway Serial
Console during initial configuration.
•The CD-ROM drive is used to restore the Application Gateway server
software in the event of a system failure. The software includes the
Application Gateway operating system and all documentation.
•The floppy drive is not used for Application Gateway operation.

Figure 2 shows the cable connectors on the back of the Application
Gateway.

•The AC power cord connector is at the back of the Application
Gateway on the left side.
•The P2 network interface (Interface 1) connects the Application
Gateway to the server-side network, directly or indirectly.
•The P1 network interface (Interface 0) connects the Application
Gateway to the client-side network.
•The serial port connects the Application Gateway to a computer
capable of running terminal emulation software.
•The remaining ports are not used for any function. Do not plug any
device into these ports.

Serial Ports
The Application Gateway has two serial ports, as shown in Figure 3. Both
ports can be used to connect the server to a maintenance terminal. The
serial port is used during initial configuration of the Application Gateway.

Planning and Engineering
The following topics describe the environmental, grounding, and power
requirements of the Nortel Application Gateway 1000:

Environmental Conditions
The environment in which the Application Gateway operates must meet
the following general conditions:
•Ventilating openings on the Application Gateway must be free of
obstructions.
•Temperature must be maintained between 0° and 35° C (32° and
98° F).
•Humidity must be between 5% and 95% at 30° C non-condensing.
•The Application Gateway must not be subject to constant vibration.
•The Application Gateway and other system equipment must be
located at least 12 ft. (3.66 m) away from sources of electrostatic,
electromagnetic, or radio frequency interference. These sources can
include:
– power tools
– appliances (such as vacuum cleaners)
– office business machines (such as copying machines)
– elevators
– air conditioners and large fans
– radio and TV transmitters

– high-frequency security devices
– all electric motors
– electrical transformers
Each Application Gateway can dissipate up to 125 Watts of power.
Grounding
Like all system equipment, the Application Gateway must be thoroughly
grounded. For more information, refer to the Planning and Engineering
document provided with your call server.
The Application Gateway is not connected to a grounding block. It is
properly grounded when:
•The Application Gateway power cord is plugged into the rack’s AC
outlet. The rack’s AC outlet must be grounded to its dedicated
electrical panel. This is the preferred method.
•The Application Gateway power cord is plugged into a wall AC outlet.
The Application Gateway is grounded outside of the rack by the safety
grounding conductor in the power cord. This method ensures only
proper grounding of the Application Gateway itself. It does not
provide grounding protection for other rack-mounted pieces of
equipment. Therefore, ensure that other devices in the rack are
properly grounded as required.

Tables 1, 2, and 3, list the AC power input requirements for the
Application Gateway in North America, the United Kingdom, and
Europe. Table 4 summarizes these input requirements to determine the
power consumption of the Application Gateway.

Materials Required
To install the Application Gateway, obtain the following items:
1. The Application Gateway and its installation CD-ROM.
Note Save the packaging container and packing materials in case you
must reship the product.
2. The power cable for the Application Gateway. Check that the power
cord is the exact type required in the host region. Do not modify or use
the supplied AC power cord if it is not the correct type.
3. The serial cable for the Application Gateway. Alternatively, a
crossover cable.
4. The CAT5 cables for networking.
Obtained the following:
•screwdrivers
•an ECOS 1023 POW-R-MATE or similar type of
multimeter
•appropriate cable terminating tools
•a computer to be connected directly to the Application
Gateway by a DTE—DTE null modem cable, with a
teletype terminal (ANSI-W emulation, serial port,
19 200 bps) for the Application Gateway. Alternatively,
a crossover cable and PC.
