Quick Setup Guide
Before you can use the machine, read this Quick Setup Guide for the correct setup and installation.

Unpack the machine and check the components
WARNING
Plastic bags are used in the packaging of your machine. To avoid danger of suffocation, please keep
these bags away from babies and children.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT connect the interface cable yet.

Note
• The components included in the box may differ depending on your country.
• Save all packing materials and the box in case for any reason you must ship your machine.
• Parallel cable and Network cable are not standard accessories. Buy the appropriate interface cable for the
interface you want to use.
USB cable
• Please make sure you use a USB 2.0 cable (Type A/B) that is no longer than 6 feet (2 meters).
• DO NOT connect the interface cable at this time. Connecting the interface cable is done during
Multi-Function or Océ installation process.
• When you use a USB cable, make sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer and not to a USB
port on a keyboard or non-powered USB hub.
Parallel cable
DO NOT use a parallel interface cable that is longer than 6 feet (2 meters). Use a shielded interface cable that
is IEEE 1284-compliant.
Network cable
Use a straight-through Category5 (or greater) twisted-pair cable for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet
Network.

CAUTION
CAUTION
When you move the machine, grasp the side handholds that are under the scanner. DO NOT carry the machine
by holding it at the bottom.
WARNINGS tell you what to do to prevent possible personal injury.
CAUTIONS specify procedures you must follow or avoid to prevent possible
minor injuries.
IMPORTANT describes procedures you must follow or avoid to prevent

Install the drum unit and
toner cartridge assembly
aRemove the protective tape and film covering
the scanner glass.
bPress the front cover release button and open
the front cover a.
cUnpack the drum unit and toner cartridge
assembly.
dGently shake it from side to side several times
to distribute the toner evenly inside the
assembly.
ePut the drum unit assembly into the machine
until it clicks into place.
fClose the front cover of the machine.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT connect the interface cable yet.

Load paper in the paper
tray
aPull the paper tray completely out of the
machine.
bWhile pressing the blue paper-guide release
lever a, slide the paper guides to fit the paper
size you are loading in the tray. Make sure that
the guides are firmly in the slots.
cFan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams
and misfeeds.
dPut paper in the tray, and make sure that the
paper is below the maximum paper mark a.
The side to be printed on must be face down.
ePut the paper tray firmly back in the machine.
Make sure that it is completely inserted into the
machine.
fUnfold the support flap ato prevent paper
from sliding off the face-down output tray.
Note
For Legal or Folio size paper, press the release
button ain the bottom of the paper tray and then
pull out the back of the paper tray.
(Legal or Folio size paper are not available in
some regions.)

IMPORTANT
Make sure the paper guides touch the sides of
the paper so it will feed properly.

Release the scanner lock
aPush the lever ain the direction shown to
unlock the scanner.
(The gray scanner lock lever is located at the
back left side, under the document cover b.)

Connect the power cord
and telephone line
aMake sure that the machine power switch is off.
Connect the AC power cord to the machine.
bPlug the AC power cord into an AC outlet. Turn
the power switch on.
cConnect the telephone line cord. Connect one
end of the telephone line cord to the jack on the
machine marked LINE and the other end to a
modular wall jack.
WARNING
The machine must be grounded using a
3-prong plug.
Since the machine is grounded through the
power outlet, you can protect yourself from
potentially hazardous electrical conditions on
the telephone network by keeping the power
cord connected to your machine when you
connect it to a telephone line. Similarly, you
can protect yourself when you want to move
your machine by disconnecting the telephone
line first and then the power cord.
IMPORTANT
DO NOT connect the interface cable yet.

Note
If Scanner Locked appears on the LCD,
immediately release the scanner lock and press
Stop/Exit. (See Release the scanner
lock on page 5.)
IMPORTANT
The telephone line cord MUST be connected
to the jack on the machine marked LINE.

Choose your language
(If needed)
aPress Menu.
bPress 0.
cPress 0.
dPress or to choose your language.
Press OK.
ePress Stop/Exit.
Note
If you are sharing one telephone line with an
external telephone, connect it as shown below.
Before you connect the external telephone,
remove the protective cap afrom the EXT. jack
on the machine.

as shown below.
Before you connect the external telephone
answering machine, remove the protective cap a

Set the answer mode to External TAM if
you have an external answering machine.

Choose the correct Answer Mode
The correct Answer Mode is determined by the external devices and telephone subscriber services (Voice Mail,
Unique Ring, etc.) you have (or will be using) on the same line as the Océ machine.
aPress Menu.
bPress 0.
cPress 1.
dPress or to choose the answer mode.
Press OK.
ePress Stop/Exit.
Will you be using a Unique Ring number for receiving faxes?
Océ uses the term “Unique Ring” but telephone companies may have other names for this service such as
Custom Ringing, RingMaster, Personalized Ring, Teen Ring, Ident-A-Call, and Smart Ring. See Unique Ring in
Chapter 7 of the User’s Guide for instruction on setting up your machine using this feature.
Will you be using Voice Mail on the same telephone line as your Océ machine?
If you have Voice Mail on the same telephone line as your Océ machine, there is a strong possibility that
Voice Mail and the Océ machine will conflict with each other when receiving incoming calls. See Voice Mail in
Chapter 7 of the User’s Guide for instructions on setting up your machine using this service.
Will you be using a Telephone Answering Machine on the same telephone line as your Océ machine?
Your external telephone answering machine (TAM) will automatically answer every call. Voice messages are
stored on the external TAM and fax messages are printed. Choose External TAM as your answer mode. See
the instructions below.
Will you be using your Océ machine on a dedicated fax line?
Your machine automatically answers every call as a fax. Choose Fax Only as your answer mode. See the
instructions below.
Will you be using your Océ machine on the same line as your telephone?
Do you want to receive voice calls and faxes automatically?
The Fax/Tel answer mode is used when sharing the Océ machine and your telephone on the same line.
Choose Fax/Tel as your answer mode. See the instructions below.
Important Note: You cannot receive voice messages on either Voice Mail or an answering machine when
choosing the Fax/Tel mode.
Do you expect to receive very few faxes?
Choose Manual as your answer mode. You control the phone line and must answer every call yourself. See
the instructions below.

Set the LCD contrast
(If needed)
If you are having difficulty reading the LCD, try
changing the contrast setting.
aPress Menu.
bPress 1.
cPress 7.
dPress to increase the contrast.
—OR—
Press to decrease the contrast.
Press OK.
ePress Stop/Exit.

Set the date and time
The machine displays the time, and if you set up the
machine ID, the date and time will be added to each
fax you send.
aPress Menu.
bPress 0.
cPress 2.
dEnter the last two digits of the year on the dial
pad, and then press OK.

Set your Machine ID
You should store your name and fax number to be
printed on all fax pages that you send.
aPress Menu.

Job Status Report
Your Océ machine is equipped with a Job Status
Report that can be used as confirmation that you sent
a fax. This report lists the name or fax number of the
receiving party, the date, time, and duration of the
transmission, the number of pages transmitted, and
whether or not the transmission was successful. If you
want to use the Job Status Report feature see
Chapter 11 Printing Reports in the User’s Guide.

Set tone or pulse dialing
mode
Your machine comes set for Tone dialing service. If
you have Pulse dialing service (rotary), you need to
change the dialing mode.
aPress Menu.
bPress 0.
cPress 4.
dPress or to choose Pulse (or Tone).
Press OK.
ePress Stop/Exit.
Note
• See the following chart for entering your name.
• If you need to enter a character that is on the
same key as the last character, press to
move the cursor to the right.
• If you entered a letter incorrectly and want to
change it, press or to move the cursor to
the incorrect character, press Clear/Back.

Note
If you make a mistake and want to start again,
press Stop/Exit and go back to step a.
(USA only) The Telephone Consumer Protection
Act of 1991 makes it unlawful for any person to
use a computer or electronic device to send any
message via a telephone fax machine unless
such messages clearly contain, in a margin at the
top or bottom of each transmitted page, or on the
first page of the transmission, the date and time it
is sent and an identification of the business or
other entity or other individual sending the
message and the telephone number of the
sending machines or such business, other entity
or individual. To program this information into
your machine, see Set the date and
time on page 8 and Set your Machine
ID on page 8.
