1. Warning
This microscope is a scientic precision instrument designed to last for many years with a minimum of
maintenance. It is built to high optical and mechanical standards and to withstand daily use. We remind you
that this manual contains important information on safety and maintenance, and that it must therefore be made
accessible to the instrument users. We decline any responsibility deriving from incorrect instrument use uses
that does not comply with this manual.
2. Symbols and conventions
The following chart is an illustrated glossary of the symbols that are used in this manual.
CAUTION
This symbol indicates a potential risk and alerts you to proceed with caution.

This symbol indicates a risk of electrical shock.
3. Safety Information
AvoidingElectricalShock
Before plugging in the power supply, make sure that the supplying voltage of your region matches with the ope-
ration voltage of the equipment and that the lamp switch is in off position. Users should observe all safety regu-
lations of the region. The equipment has acquired the CE safety label. However, users have full responsibility to
use this equipment safely. Please follow the guidelines below, and read this manual in its entirety to ensure safe
operation of the unit.

6. Unpacking
The microscope is housed in a moulded Styrofoam container. Remove the tape from the edge of the container
and lift the top half of the container. Take some care to avoid that the optical items (objectives and eyepieces)
fall out and get damaged. Using both hands (one around the arm and one around the base), lift the microscope
from the container and put it on a stable desk.
Do not touch with bare hands optical surfaces such as lenses, lters or glasses. Traces of grease or
other residuals may deteriorate the nal image quality and corrode the optics surface in a short time.

7.3 Microscope assembling
1. Insert the reected light illuminator ① on the
frame and lock the locking knob ② with the pro-
vided Allen wrench. (Fig. 1)
2. Remove the cover ③ on the back side of the il-
luminator. (Fig. 2)
3. Insert the LED housing ④ and lock the locking
screws ⑤. (Fig. 3-4)

4. Connect the illuminator cable ⑥to the connector
⑦ placed on the back side of the frame. (Fig. 5)
5. Insert the optical head above the epi-illuminator
and tighten the locking screw ⑧ with the provided
Allen wrench. (Fig. 6)
• Hold the head with one hand during the
lockinginordertoavoidthattheheadfalls.
(OnlyB-510MET-R)
• Condenser is pre-installed in the factory. To
remove the condenser use an Allen wrench
1,5mm diam and operate on the locking screw
placed on the right side of the condenser holder.
6. Insert both eyepieces into the tubes of the optical
head. (Fig. 7)
7. Screw each objective into the thread of
the nosepiece, clockwise with increasing
magnication. (Fig. 8)

8. Insert the polarizer “PO” with the incription facing
the user (before removing the empty slider). (Fig.
9)
9. Insert analyzer “AN” with the incription facing up
(rst removing the white covering plates on the
illuminator). (Fig.10-11)
10. It is possible to combine the analyzer and the
polarizer together (using the connection plate) so
that the insertion of the two lters is simultaneous.
Screw the plate xing screws to the holes on the
end of the lters. (Fig. 12)

9.1 Lightintensityadjustment
Operate on the light intensity adjustment knob to turn
ON / OFF the microscope and to increase / decrease
the illumination voltage ①. (Fig. 14)
• For B-510MET-R only. There is a three-position
switch on the rear of the stand: position “I” turns
on the transmitted light, position “II” turns on
the reected light and position “O” turns off the
microscope.
9.2 Coarsefocustensionadjustment
• Adjustthetensionusingtheprovidedtool.
The coarse knob tension is pre-adjusted in the
factory.
To modify the tension according to personal’s needs,
rotate the ring

using the provided tool. (Fig. 15)
Clockwise rotation increases the tension.
If the tension is too loose, the stage could go lower
by itself or the focus easily lost after ne adjustment.
In this case, rotate the knob in order to increase the
tension
.
9.3
Coarse upper limit lever
The upper limit knob has two functions: prevents
the contact between slide and objective and acts as
“focus memory”.
After focussing the specimen, pull the lever

toward
the front of the microscope and lock it. (Fig. 16). In
this way the focus upper limit is set. Now one can
lower the stage with coarse focus knob, replace the
specimen and raise again the stage up to the upper
limit: specimen will be in approximate focus and will
need a ne adjustment to get the proper focus.
Fine focus movement is not affected by the coarse
focus lock.
• To unlock, move the lever in the opposite
directiontotheoneusedforthelocking.
9.4 Stage
9.4.1 B-510MET
Stage accepts metallurgical samples with thickness
max 35 mm, placed on a standard support 26 x 76
mm.
• Open the spring arm of the slide holder

and place frontally the slides on the stage.

• Gently release the spring arm of the slide
holder.

9.5
Dioptricadjustment
1. Look into the right eyepiece with your right eye
only, and focus on the specimen.
2. Look into the left eyepiece with your left eye
only. If the image is not sharp, use the dioptric
adjustment ring ① to compensate. (Fig. 19)
• Theadjustmentrangeis±5diopter.Thenumber
indicated on the adjustment ring graduation
shouldcorrespondtotheoperator’sdioptric
correction.
9.6 Adjustingtheinterpupillarydistance
Observing with both eyes, hold the two eyepiece
prism assemblies. Rotate them around their common
axis until the elds of view coincide.
• Thegraduationontheinterpupillarydistance
indicator ②, pointed by the spot “.” on the
eyepieceholder,showsthedistancebetween
theoperator’seyes.(Fig.34)
The range of the interpupillary distance is 48-75 mm.
9.7 Useofeyeshields
• Usewitheyeglasses
Fold rubber eyeshields with both hands. Folded
eyeshields avoid scratching the lenses of eyeglasses.

• Usewithouteyeglasses
Raise eye shields and observe at the microscope
placing eyes to the shields, avoiding external light to
disturb the observation. (Fig. 22)
9.8 Centeringofreectedlightdiaphragms
9.8.1Fielddiaphragm(FS)
1. Move the selector ① on the reected light
illuminator in the position corresponding to letter
“R” (onlyB-510MET-R). (Fig. 23)
2. Place the specimen on the stage, insert 10x
objective into the light path and focus.
3. Completely pull out the eld diaphragm selector
② to fully close the diaphragm.(Fig. 24)
4. Using the provided Allen wrench use the two
centering screws ③to bring the bright spot in the
center of the eld of view.
5. Gradually open the diaphragm. The condenser
is centered when the diaphragm image is
symmetrical to the eld of view. (Fig. 25)
6. In normal use, open the diaphragm until it
circoscribes the eld of view.
9.8.2Effectsoftheelddiaphragm
Field diaphragm adjusts the illuminated area to
obtain a high contrast image.
Set the diaphragm according to the objective in
use until it circoscribes the eld of view, in order to
eliminate unnecessary light to eyepieces.

9.8.3Aperturediaphragm(AS)
1. Move the selector ① on the reected light
illuminator in the position corresponding to letter
“R” (onlyB-510MET-R). (Fig. 23)
2. Completely pull out the aperture diaphragm
selector ④ to fully close the diaphragm. (Fig. 26)
3. Remove one eyepiece.
4. While looking into the empty eyepiece sleeve,
use the provided Allen wrench into the centering
screws ⑤ to bring the bright spot in the center of
the eld of view. (Fig. 26)
5. The illuminator is centered when the diaphragm
image is simmetrical to the eld of view.
• The Numerical Aperture (N.A.) value of the
aperture diaphragm affects the image contrast.
Increasing or reducing this value one can vary
resolution, contrast and depth of focus of the
image.
• With low contrast specimens move the diaphragm
lever to about 70%-80% of the objective’s N.A. If
necessary, remove on eyepiece and, looking into
empty sleeve, adjust the condenser’s ring in order
to obtain an image like the one in Fig. 27.

9.9.1Centeringthecondenser
1. Place the specimen on the stage, insert 10x
objective into the light path and focus.
2. Insert the front lens of the swing-out condenser

3. Rotate the eld diaphragm ring ②in
counterclockwise direction, to fully close the
diaphragm.
4. Rotate the condenser height adjustment knob ③
to focus the edges of the diaphragm.
5. Rotate the two centering screws ④to bring the
bright spot in the center of the eld of view.
6. Gradually open the diaphragm. The condenser
is centered when the diaphragm image is
symmetrical to the eld of view.
7. In normal use, open the diaphragm until it
circoscribes the eld of view.

9.9.2Aperturediaphragm
• The Numerical Aperture (N.A.) value of the
aperture diaphragm affects the image contrast.
Increasing or reducing this value one can vary
resolution, contrast and depth of focus of the
image.
• With low contrast specimens set the numerical
aperture value ① (printed on the condenser ring)
to about 70%-80% of the objective’s N.A. (Fig. 29)
If necessary, remove on eyepiece and, looking
into empty sleeve, adjust the condenser’s ring in
order to obtain an image like the one in g. 27.

9.10 Useoflters
Insert the desired lter for the observation in the slot
placed in the left side of the illuminator (Fig. 30).
First click stop position leaves lter not inserted,
while second position inserts lter into the light path.
Filter Application
Blue Converts the source color temperature
to daylight
Green Increase the contrast in black and white
photography
Yellow Contrast filter for the observation of
wafers and semiconductors
Frosted white Reduces lighting irregularities by creat-
ing a homogeneous field of view
9.11 Oblique illumination
After focusing the specimen with the desired objective,
gently move the oblique illumination sliders (Fig. 31).
Stop sliding when a shadow begins to obscurate the
specimen. In this way an oblique illumination effect
can be achieved, that highlights reliefs and surface
defects of your specimen.

1. Move the polarizer “PO” into the light path until
the slider clicks into its position. (Fig. 32)
2. Move the rotatable analyzer “AN” into the light
path until the slider clicks into its position. (Fig.
33)
3. Put a at mirror on the stage and get into appro-
ximate focus the mirror surface.
4. While observing into the eyepieces, rotate the
scale of the analyzer ① until you achieve the
darkest image. (Fig. 34)
• Now the light extinction (so-called “crossed Nicol
position”) is achieved.
5. Put a specimen on the stage, focus the specimen
and begin observation.
