Safeguards and Precautions
1. Read and follow all instructions in this manual carefully, and retain this manual for
future reference. Operation manual can be provided electronically in alternate languages
upon request.
2. Do not use this instrument in any manner inconsistent with these operating
instructions or under any conditions that exceed the environmental specifications stated.
3. Do not plug the drive unit of the mixer in before verifying voltage configuration.
4. Do not attempt to service or reposition the drive unit while shaft/shaft adaptor is
rotating.
5. Use caution when lifting the equipment: Hold equipment by the frame and not by the
motor or motor positioner. Lifting may require more than one person.
6. Do not allow loose clothing or parts of the body to come near the rotating drive unit
shaft/shaft adaptor.
7. Prior to servicing the drive unit, always turn the power off using the ON/OFF switch on
the front of the unit. Unplug and remove power cord to avoid tangling or breaking.
8. Do not attempt to open or repair the drive. Removal or destruction of the housing
voids any warranty, explicit or implied. Consult the manufacturer or distributor for
qualified technical service assistance.
9. Use only Pall®Rotational Wands and Pall heavy duty frames. Use of non-Pall rotational
wands or frames could result in injury to the operator or damage to the mixing system.

2. INTRODUCTION
The WandMixer® System is a revolutionary mixer that provides efficient mixing utilizing a
patented rotational wand technology in a sterile closed bag. The WandMixer®System is
able to mix in sterile disposable hermetically sealed bags ranging in volume from 5L to
50L.
The system hardware has seven major components:
1. Drive motor with rotational speed display and shaft adaptor
2. Bench Top stainless steel frame for supporting drive unit above the bag
3. Retaining tank (plastic or steel)
4. Rotational wand with hex head
5. Wand coupler
6. Wand bushing
7. Wand Clamp

3. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Pall®rotational wand mixing technology provides non-invasive mixing inside sterile
plastic bags. It is based on rotating of the curved rod pre-introduced in the sleeve of the
mixing bag. The rod is separated from the processed sterile fluid by sleeve which is
hermetically sealed on one end. Rotation of rod induces rotational motion of the sleeve
due to flexural shape changes. Flexural rotational motion of the sleeve results in
efficient mixing inside the bag.
Figure 1: Rotational wand is pre-introduced inside the sleeve of the bag. Once rotation of the wand is
activated by external drive, sleeve performs rotational motion based on its flexing. The mixing procedure
is non-invasive leaving the processed fluid contained in sealed bag.

4.1 Coupler
Stainless steel coupler provides mechanical interface between the bag and the driving
motor. It has hollow bore that receives the wand fitting on the bag. The coupler is
secured on the sleeve fitting of the bag with two thumb screws. The coupler has flanged
end that mates with the flange of the shaft adaptor.

4.2 Rotational wand
Rotational wand provides the rotational motion of the mixing sleeve in inside the bag.
The wand is introduced in the open end of the sleeve, while its hexagonal head is
received by motor shaft adaptor.

4.3 Bushing
Plastic wand bushing centers the wand in the sleeve fitting. Wand is inserted into the
bushing prior to wand insertion into the bag.

4.4 Shaft adaptor
The shaft adaptor interfaces between the coupler and the driving motor. Adaptor
receives the hexagonal head of rotational wand. The bearing in the flange of the shaft
adaptor decouples the rotation of the shaft from the bag.

4.5 Clamp
The clamp secures the connection between the mating flanges of coupler and shaft
adaptor.

5. FRAME AND DRIVE MOTOR
The frame of the mixing system houses the driving motor, motor positioner and control
box, see Figure 2 (page 8). Motor positioner allows an adjustment of the vertical
position of the motor by rotating the handle on the top of the positioner. The adjustable
position of the motor allows for usage of the retaining tanks with different heights.
6. ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE PRIOR TO MIXING
6.1 Introduce mixing bag into appropriate retaining tank and fill it with fluid by using the
appropriate tube line. Make sure that retaining tank is compatible with the bag volume.
6.2 Ensure that the two thumb screws do not penetrate beyond the inner surface of the
coupler. Assemble the coupler with the bag by sliding the coupler over the sleeve fitting
all the way down to the film of the bag (see Figure 9, below).
6.3 Secure the coupler against the fitting by tightening both thumb screws.
6.4 The wand part number is stamped on its hexagonal head. Use only specified
wand. Insert rotational wand into the bushing, then insert the assembly into the sleeve
of the bag (see Figure 9, below).

6.5 Position the mixing bag with retaining tank in such a way that fitting with coupler is
located approximately under the shaft adaptor (see Figure 10, below).
6.6 Adjust vertical position of the motor by rotating the handle of the motor positioner
until the distance between the coupler and the shaft adaptor is about 2 inches.
6.7 Hold the coupler, move it toward the shaft adaptor, insert the hex head of the wand
in the receiving hex cavity inside the adaptor, bring the mating surfaces of two flanges
together (see Figure 10, below).
6.8 Secure the flanges of the coupler and shaft adaptor against each other by clamp
(see Figure 10, below). Tighten the screw on the clamp.
6.9 Move the motor coupled with the bag slightly up by turning the handle of the
motor positioner until noticeable bag tension is developed.

7. OPERATING DRIVE MOTOR
7.1 Plug the power cord in to the proper power source identified on the nameplate of the
system.
7.2Depress the round button of the main switch to energize the system (the button will
illuminate).
7.3 Place the knob of the speed control potentiometer in ZERO position by turning it all
the way counterclockwise.
7.4 Press the RUN (green) button on the speed readout.
7.5 Set the speed of the mixer by turning the potentiometer clockwise until the desired
speed value illuminates on display.
7.6 To stop the motor press the STOP (red) button on the speed readout. Press the
RUN (green) button to resume motor operation at a preset speed. See Figure 11
(below) for details on the control Box.

8. DISCONNECTING BAG FROM MOTOR
8.1 Stop the motor by pressing STOP (red) button on speed display. Turn speed control
potentiometer to ZERO position by turning its knob all the way counterclockwise.
8.2 Press and release the main switch button on the control box. The button will stop
illumination indicating that the power is off.
8.3 Remove the clamp connecting the coupler with shaft adaptor.
8.4 Push the coupler down away from shaft adaptor by 1-2 inches.
8.5 Reach the wand and push it down away from shaft adaptor until the hex head of the
wand is released from adaptor. Use small bearing on wand for better grip.
8.6 Once the hex head of the wand is released, raise the motor up 1-2 inches (by
rotating the handle on the top of the motor positioner) for better clearance from the bag.
8.7 Roll the tank with the bag out of the mixer’s frame.
8.8 Pull the wand from the sleeve holding plastic bushing inside the coupler.
8.9 Loosen thumb screws on the coupler, slide coupler out of the sleeve fitting.
8.10 Take plastic bushing out of the coupler.
8.11 Mixer is now ready to accommodate new mixing bag.
