Before installing and using the PT-4000 POS Station, take note of the
following precautions:
♦Read all instructions carefully.
♦Do not place the unit on an unstable surface, cart, or stand.
♦Do not block the slots and opening on the unit, which are
provided for ventilation.
♦Only use the power source indicated on the marking label. If
you are not sure, contact your dealer or the Power Company.
♦The unit uses a three-wire ground cable, which is equipped
with a third pin to ground the unit and prevent electric shock.
Do not defeat the purpose of this pin. If your outlet does not
support this kind of plug, contact your electrician to replace
your obsolete outlet.
♦Do not place anything on the power cord. Place the power cord
where it will not be in the way of foot traffic.
♦Follow all warnings and cautions in this manual and on the unit
case.
♦Do not push objects in the ventilation slots as they may touch
high voltage components and result in shock and damage to
the components.
♦When replacing parts, ensure that your service technician uses
parts specified by the manufacturer.
♦When service or repairs have been done, ensure that the
service technician performs routine safety checks to verify that
the system is operating correctly.
♦Avoid using the system near water, in direct sunlight, or near a
heating device.
♦Cover the unit when not in use.

The PT-4000 provides you with a fast and accurate point-of-sales (POS)
solution for use in supermarkets, information kiosks, restaurants, and
other hospitality service areas. The 12.1 or 13.3-inch LCD panel displays
provide a clear color TFT (DSTN optional) interface, giving superior
resolution and monitor capabilities. The PT-4000 also features an
integrated touch screen, enabling users to access the system using their
fingers or a stylus.
The PT-4000 POS Station’s mainboard supports Intel Celeron processors
up to 700 MHz, and Pentium III processors from 500 to 750 MHz and
above. The mainboard accommodates SDRAM memory up to 512 MB.
A 3.5-inch IDE hard disk drive (HDD) provides the core storage of the
unit. An internally mounted 2.5-inch IDE HDD is optional. The storage
features of the station include a DiskOnChip, which is expandable to 288
MB. The DiskOnChip is shared with an optional SSD (Solid State Disk).
The PT-4000 POS Station comes with the following I/O interfaces:
•4 RS232 ports, 3 external with D9 pin connector with +5 VDC or
+12 VDC (set by jumper)
•1 parallel port
•1 Ethernet, 10/100 BASE-T
•1 PS/2 keyboard port
•1 PS/2 mouse port
•1 XVGA (CRT supports up to 1024x768)
•1 cash drawer port supporting two cash drawers
•2 USB ports
•Audio out
•Cash drawer power port (24 VDC)

The PT-4000 POS Station comes securely packaged in a sturdy cardboard
shipping carton. Upon receiving your PT-4000 POS Station, open the
carton and carefully remove the contents. If anything is missing or
damaged, please contact your dealer immediately. The shipping carton
should contain the following items:
•One PT-4000 POS Station (including one pedestal with keylock)
•One power supply unit and AC power cord
•One HDD cable
•One FDD cable
•Cable securing straps
•Screws
•Support driver and utility CD-ROM or diskettes
•One front base cover
•One rear base cover
•Two hinge covers

Note! The barcode reader and RF reader connect to MSR PCB JP4
connector (refer to the Appendix C). The smart card connects to a
COM port. A CCD (barcode scanner) can connect to a PS/2 keyboard

The PT-4000 POS Station is equipped with an Infrared (IR)
communication module located on the front of the station. If you are
having trouble finding this module, please see Front View on page 5. The
IR module consists of one Light Emitting Diode (LED) and one photo
sensor. The operation of the IR module is similar to the operation of a
television remote control device.
The IR module enables you to perform wireless, serial communication.
Use an SIR-specified application to transmit or receive data via the PT-
4000 POS Station IR module. You can set IR preferences in the Integrated
Peripherals screen in BIOS. Please refer to Chapter 5 for information on
the BIOS Setup program.
Follow the guidelines listed below when using the infrared
communication module to transmit or receive data.
•Ensure that the PT-4000 POS Station IR module is properly
aligned with the other device’s infrared communication module.
The angle between the two infrared communication modules
should not exceed ±15°.
•There should be a clear path between the two Infrared
communication modules; otherwise, the optical signal will be
blocked. Likewise, do not place anything between the two
infrared communication modules during data transmission.
•Make sure the distance between the PT-4000 POS Station IR
module and the other device’s infrared communication module is
not closer than 15 cm and does not exceed seven meters.
•Do not move either the PT-4000 POS Station or the other device
during transmission of data; otherwise, data transmission will be
distorted resulting in loss of data or a system crash.
•An error can occur if IR transmission is conducted in an
environment with high levels of noise. To avoid transmission
errors do not transmit infrared communication signals near
equipment with compressors, such as refrigerators or air
conditioners.

The PT-4000 POS Station has an optional IR keyboard, providing greater
expandability and flexibility for setting up and maintaining the station.
The IR keyboard has integrated firmware, and is automatically installed
in Windows 2000/ME/98/95/NT.
Refer to the following illustration for proper usage of the IR keyboard:

The LCD panel can be rotated to provide convenient access to the CD-
ROM/FDD drive and to enable you to change the HDD drive. The
rotation provides flexible viewing angles for all types of environments:
