
2. PCL-051/phyCORE-AM335x System on Module
This chapter gives a brief introduction to the PCL-051/phyCORE-AM335x System on Modu e (SOM),

The phyCORE-AM335x be ongs to PHYTEC’s phyCORE System on Modu e (SOM) fami y. The
phyCORE SOMs represent the continuous deve opment of PHYTEC SOM techno ogy. Like its mini-,
micro-, and nano MODULE predecessors, the phyCORE boards integrate a core e ements of a
microcontro er system on a sub miniature board and are designed in a manner that ensures their easy
expansion and embedding in periphera hardware deve opments.
As independent research indicates that approximate y 70% of a EMI (E ectro Magnetic Interference)
prob ems stem from insufficient supp y vo tage grounding of e ectronic components in high frequency
environments, the phyCORE board design features an increased pin package. The increased pin package
a ows dedication of approximate y 20% of a connector pins on the phyCORE boards to ground. This
improves EMI and EMC characteristics and makes it easier to design comp ex app ications meeting EMI
and EMC guide ines using phyCORE boards even in high noise environments.
phyCORE boards achieve their sma size through modern SMD techno ogy and mu ti- ayer design. In
accordance with the comp exity of the modu e, 0402-packaged SMD components and aser-dri ed
Microwave are used on the boards, providing phyCORE users with access to this cutting edge
miniaturization techno ogy for integration into their own design.
The PCM-051, connector version of the phyCORE-AM335x is a sub-miniature (44 mm x 50 mm)
insert-ready SOM popu ated with AM335x processor. Its universa design enab es its insertion into a wide
range of embedded app ications. A processor signa s and ports extend from the processor to high-density
pitch (0.5 mm) connectors a igning two sides of the board. This a ows the SOM to be p ugged ike a "big
chip" into a target app ication.
The PCL-051, connector ess version of the phyCORE-AM335x popu ating the phyBOARD-WEGA-
AM335x is identica to the connectored version, with the exception of the connection interface. Instead of
two high density connectors a igning the edges of the board, the PCL-051 so ders direct y down to its
Carrier Board with a BGA sty e footprint.
Precise specifications for the processor popu ating the board can be found in the app icab e processor
user's manua and datasheet. The descriptions in this manua are based on the AM335x processor. No
description of compatib e processor derivative functions is inc uded; as such functions are not re evant for
the basic functioning of the WEGA Board.
