The Jazzy 1103 is a state-of-the-art life-enhancement device designed to enhance your mobility. There are,
however,certainsituations—includingsomemedicalconditions—whereyouwillneedtopracticeoperatingyour
Jazzy 1103 in the presence of an attendant. Below are some safety tips that are designed to help you become
accustomedtoyournew Jazzy.
II. SAFETY
WARNING!The Jazzy1103is amotorised vehicle.When youareseated inyour Jazzy1103 andyou
anticipate being in a stationary position for an extended period of time, turn off the power. This
eliminates the possibility of unexpected movement and conserves battery power.
TRANSFERS
Transferring onto andoff of yourJazzy 1103requires agood senseof balance. Besure to have an attendant or
healthcareprofessionalpresentwhilelearningto properly transfer yourself. Toeliminatethepossibilityofinjury,
weaskthatyouverifythefollowing before attempting atransfer:
1. Besure the poweris turned off.
2. Besurethe Jazzy 1103 is notinthe freewheel mode.
3. Makesure the armrestsare flipped upor removedfromthe powerchair.
4. Tipthefootrestup; this helps tokeepyourfeetfromgetting caught on thefootrestduringthetransfer.
WARNING! Avoid putting all of your weight on the footrest. This may cause the Jazzy 1103 to tip
and cause injury!

PUBLIC ROADS AND PARKING LOTS
WARNING! Do not operate your Jazzy 1103 on public streets and roadways. Please be aware it
may be difficult for traffic to see you when you are seated in your Jazzy. To ensure your safety,
alwaysassume youcannotbe seen. Obeyalllocal pedestriantraffic rules. Safetyaccessorieslike
reflectors, fluorescent flags, and various lighting packages are available to order from your Pride
provider.
STEPS AND KERBS
WARNING! Do not attempt to climb a step or kerb higher than 3 cm. Never attempt to proceed
backwards down any step, kerb, or other obstacle. Doing so could cause the Jazzy 1103 to tip.
INCLINES AND UNEVEN TERRAIN
Whenclimbing anincline, tryto keepthe chair moving. If you must stop, startup againslowly andaccelerate
cautiously.
WARNING! When climbing an incline, do not zigzag or drive at an angle up the face of the incline.
Drive your Jazzy straight up the incline. This greatly reduces the possibility of a tip or fall. Always
exercise extreme caution when navigating an incline. Never travel up or down an incline that can
be potentially hazardous (e.g., areas covered with snow, ice, wet leaves,or cut grass).
Whenmovingdownanincline,do so slowlyandintheforwarddirectiononly. IfyourJazzy1103startstomove
fasterthan you anticipated, allow the unit to come toa completestop byreleasing the joystick. Then push the
joystickforwardslightlyandcontinuetravelingdowntheincline.
MAXIMUM RECOMMENDED INCLINE
Pridehas performed extensiveincline testing withyour Jazzy 1103. Our resultshave shown thatthe maximum
inclineyoucan climbis8,7%grade atmaximumweight capacity. An8,7% grade istheangle of mosthandicap
accessramps. Anyattempt to climbasteeper slope mayputyour Jazzy inanunstable position.

Your Jazzy hastwo mainassemblies: theseat and the power base. See figure 1. There are avariety ofseating
optionsthataredesignedtoaccommodate most users. Typically,theseating system includes armrests,seatback,
seatbase,andjoystick. YourJazzyseatmay also havesomeoptionalaccessories attached toit,suchas a basket,
cane/crutchholder, acup holder,ora powerseat switch.
Thepower baseis theheart ofthe Jazzy. Thepower baseassembly includestwo motor/brakeassemblies, two

Theconnectorhousingislocatedon the rear of the Jazzy.Seefigure3. Theconnectorhousing holds the main circuit
breakerand controller harness connectors.
Main Circuit Breaker
Themaincircuitbreakerisa safety feature built into your Jazzy 1103. When the batteries and the motorsareheavily
strained(e.g., fromexcessiveloads),themaincircuitbreakertripstoprevent damagetothe motorsandtheelectronics.
Ifthe circuit trips, allow theJazzyto “rest” for approximately oneminute.Then, push in the circuitbreakerbutton,
turn the controller power back on, and continue normal operation. If the main circuit breaker continues to trip
repeatedly,contact your authorised Pride provider.
Controller Harness Connectors
These are where the joystick cables connect to the power base.
Freewheel Levers
Forconvenience, your Jazzy 1103is equipped withtwo freewheel levers. Seefigure 2. These levers allowyou to
disengagethedrivemotorsandmaneuverthechairmanually.
To engage or disengage the drive motors:
1. Locatethetwo (2) metal levers protruding fromthebody shroud.
2. Turn them outwardtoengage the drive motors.
3. Turntheminwardtodisengage the drive motors.
Iftheleverisdifficulttomove in either direction, slightly rock the Jazzy 1103backandforth.The lever should then
movetothedesiredposition.

NOTE: When the Jazzy 1103 is in the freewheel mode, the braking system is disengaged.
WARNING!Do notuse theJazzy 1103whilethedrivemotors aredisengaged! Donotdisengage the
drive motors when the Jazzy 1103 is on an incline, as the unit could roll on its own, causing injury!

Your Jazzy 1103 usestwo long-lasting, 12-volt, deep-cyclebatteries. These batteries are sealed andmaintenance-
free. Sincetheyare sealed, there is no needtocheckthe electrolyte (fluid) level. Deep-cycle batteries aredesigned
tohandleadeepdischarge. Thoughtheyaresimilarinappearancetoautomotivebatteries,theyarenotinterchangeable.
Automotivebatteries are not designed tohandle a long, deep dischargeand also are unsafe.
BATTERY BREAK-IN
To break in yourJazzy’s new batteries for maximum efficiency:
1. Fullyrecharge anynewbattery priortoinitialuse. Thisbringsthebatteryuptoabout90%ofitspeakperformance.
2. RunyourJazzy1103 about the house. Move slowly at first anddon’tstraytoofaruntilyoubecomeaccustomed
tothe controls andbreak in the batteries.
3. Give the batteries another full charge of 8 to 14 hours and run the Jazzy 1103 again. The batteries should now
performatover 90% of their potential.
4. After four or five charging cycles, the batteries top off at 100% charge and last for an extended period.
BATTERIES - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS)
Howoftenmust I chargethebatteries?
Manyfactorscomeintoplaywhendeciding how often to chargethebatteries. YoumayuseyourJazzy1103allday
on a daily basis or you may not use it for weeks at a time.
WARNING! You must recharge your Jazzy 1103s batteries with the supplied off-board charging
system. Do not use an automotive-type battery charger!
To charge the batteries using the onboard charger:
1. Positionthe rear ofyourJazzy 1103closeto a standardwalloutlet.
2. Becertainthe controller poweristurnedoffandthe Jazzy is notinfreewheel.
3. Plugthe charger cord intothechargerconnector on theconnectorhousing.
4. Extendthechargerpowercordandplugitintothewalloutlet.TheJazzy1103incorporatesan inhibit function
thatdisablesthepowered power chairwhenthecharger is pluggedintoawall outlet.
5. Theammeterindicates howmuchchargeis needed tofullychargethebatteries.Waitaboutaminute for the
chargertowarmup. The ammetermaymoveupto as highas3,5amps,then gradually movebackdownto0
ampsasit charges.
6. Werecommendyouchargethebatteriesfor8to14hours.Asthebatteriescharge,theammeterneedleslowlydrops
tozero.Whenthebatteriesarefullycharged,theneedlevibratesonoraboutthezeromarkonthemeterscale.
7. Whenyour Jazzy 1103batteries are fullycharged,unplugthepower cord fromthe walloutletand fromthe
chargerreceptacle and storeit ina safe place.
Offboard Charger
YourJazzymaybeequippedwithanoffboardcharger.Typically,externalchargersplugintothejoystickcontroller.
IfyourJazzyisequippedwith an external charger, refer to theinstructionsthatcomewiththecharger.

Whydomy new batteries seem weak?
Deep-cyclebatteriesemployadifferentchemical technologyfromthatusedincarbatteries, nickel-cadmium(nicads),
orinothercommonbatterytypes. Deep-cyclebatteriesarespecificallydesignedtoprovidepower,draindown,and
then accept a relatively quick recharge. Lead-acid batteries should be charged as often as possible. They do not
havea“memory”likenicads.
Wework closelywithourbatterymanufacturertoprovide a battery thatbestsuitstheJazzy1103’s specific demands.
Freshbatteriesarriveregularlyand are promptly shippedwithafullcharge. Duringshipping,thebatteries encounter
temperatureextremes that may influence theirinitial performance. Heat robs the chargefrom thebattery, and cold
slows the power available and extends the time needed to recharge the battery (just as with a car battery).
nDaily Use
Ifyou use your Jazzy1103on a daily basis,chargethebatteries as soon asyou are finished usingit for the day.
Your Jazzy 1103willbereadyeachmorningtogiveyouafullday’sservice.We recommend that you chargethe
batteries 8 to 14 hours after daily use. Do not charge the batteries for more than 24 hours.
nInfrequent Use
If you use your Jazzy 1103 infrequently (once a week or less), you should charge it at least once per week for
12to 14 hours.
NOTE: Keep the batteries fully charged and avoid deeply discharging the batteries. Do not charge for more
than 24 hours.
HowcanI getmaximumrangeor distance percharge?
Rarelywillyouhaveanideal driving situation, such as smooth, flat, hard terrain with no hillsorcurves. Moreoften
youare presented withhills, footpath cracks, unevenand loosely packed surfaces,and curves. All of thesefactors
affectthedistanceorrunningtime perbatterycharge.The followingareafewsuggestionsforobtainingthemaximum
rangeper charge:
nAlwayschargethe batteries fully prior to your trip.
nMaintain30-35psiinpneumaticdrive wheels. Do not exceed 35 psi.
nPlanyourtripinadvancetoavoidinclines if possible.
nLimitthebaggageweighttoessentialitems.
What type of battery should I use?
We recommend deep-cycle batteries thataresealedandmaintenancefree. Bothsealedlead-acid(SLA)andgelcell
aredeep-cycle batteries and aresimilar in performance. Usethese specifications to reorderdeep-cycle batteries:

It might take a few days for the temperature of the battery to stabilise and adjust to its new ambient temperature.
More importantly, it takes a few “charging cycles” (a partial drain—then full recharge) to establish the critical
chemicalbalance that is essential tothe battery’s peak performanceandlong life.
Itis well worthit for you totake the time tobreak in thebatteries properly.
NOTE: The useful life of a battery is quite often a reflection of the care it receives.
How can I insure maximum battery life?
Afullycharged deep-cycle batteryprovidesreliableperformanceand extendedbatterylife,sokeep the batteriesfully
charged whenever possible. Batteries that are regularly and deeply discharged, infrequently charged, or stored
withoutafullchargemay become permanently damaged, causingunreliableJazzyoperationandlimitedlife.
How should I store my Jazzy 1103 and batteries?
Ifyoudo not use your Jazzy 1103regularly, werecommendmaintainingbatteryvitality by chargingthe batteries at
least once a week.
If you do not plan on using your Jazzy 1103 for an extended period, fully charge the batteries prior to storage.
Disconnectthebatteryharnessesandstore the Jazzy in a warm, dry environment. Avoidtemperature extremes, such
asfreezingconditionsandexcessivelyhotconditions,andneverattempttochargeafrozenbattery. Acoldorfrozen
batteryshould be warmed for severaldays prior to recharging.

DLcontrollerisconnectedtothemotors,thebatteries,andthebatterychargerthroughacablethatconnectstothe

JOYSTICK FUNCTIONS
Thejoystickfunctionissimilarforallcontrollerconfigurations.Thejoystickcontrolsthedirectionandspeedofthe
powerchair. When youmovethe joystick fromtheneutral (center) position,theelectromagnetic brakesrelease
andallowthepower chairtomove.ThefurtheryoupushthejoystickfromitsneutralpositionthefasteryourJazzy
moves.Whenyoureleasethejoystickandallowittoreturntotheneutralposition,youengagethe electromagnetic
brakes. This causes the chair to decelerate and come to a complete stop. If your Jazzy begins to move in an
unexpectedmanner,immediatelyreleasethejoystick.Unlessthejoystickisdamaged, thisactionshouldstopyour
Jazzy.
DYNAMIC DL CONTROLLER
TheDynamicDLcontrollerisanintegralcontroller. Thismeans
thatthejoystickishousedinthesameenclosureasthecontroller
module.Thisassemblyismountedontheseatarm. TheDynamic
Speed and Response Adjustments
TheDynamic DL joystickis equippedwith a speedand responseadjustment knob thatallows you toselect the
speed and response settings best suited to your requirements and environment. When you increase the speed
(clockwise)ordecreasethespeed(counterclockwise),appropriatechangesareautomaticallymadetothesensitivity.
NOTE:We recommend that you turn the speed and response knob completely counterclockwise the first
few times you operate your Jazzy to allow you to become familiar with your new power chair.
Battery Condition Meter
Thebatteryconditionmeter is locatedimmediatelybehindthejoystick. This enables youtomonitorbatterylife.
Thebatteryconditionmeterindicatestheapproximateamountofbatterylifeleft.Seefigure 4.
nRed,yellow,andgreencirclesindicatethatthe batteries are fullycharged.
nRedandyellowcirclesindicatethatyou should charge thebatteriesifpossible.
nRedcirclesindicatethatyoushouldchargethebatteriesassoonaspossible,becauselowbatteryvoltagemay
causeyourJazzytobecome inoperative.

To operate your Jazzy:

farther you push the joystick from the neutral (center)
position,thefasterthe Jazzy 1103moves (see figure4).

Thermal Rollback
TheDynamicDLcontrollerisequippedwithathermalrollbackcircuit.Thiscircuitmonitorsthetemperatureofthe
motorsandthecontroller. In the event that the motors or the controller become excessively hot (above 50°C/122°
F), the controller reduces the motor voltage. For every degree above 50°C/122° F, the controller reduces the
voltagebyfivevolts.ThisreducesyourJazzy’s speedandallowstheelectrical components tocooldown.When
thetemperaturereturnsto a safelevel,yourJazzyresumes its normalspeed.
Trouble Codes
Inadditiontoindicating the current stateofbatterycharge,the battery conditionmetercanalsoindicatepossible
problemswithyourJazzy.Ifthebatteryconditionmeterisflashingrapidly,thecontrollermaybeindicatingafault.
Themeterhassixindividualcircles.Thesecirclesaremeanttoprovideinformationbythenumberofcirclesthatare
flashing.Forinstance, troubleisencodedas one(fora low batteryvoltage)to six (foramotor stalled orjoystick
outof neutraltime out) anddisplayed byflashing all LEDsthe numberof times givenby thetrouble code. The
followingisalistofthepossibleerrorssignifiedby therapidlyflashingmeter.

VSI CONTROLLER
Theelectronic controller iswhatyou usetooperate yourpowerchair. Ittakes the batteryvoltage and sendsitto
theappropriatesystem.The electronic controller enablesyoutomovethepowerchair,aswellasmonitorbattery
charge,electroniccontrollerfunctions,andtheconditionofyourelectricalsystem.Also,itmaybeusedtocontrol
someoptionalsystemssuchaspowerelevatingseatsand lights.
TheVSI controller is anintegralelectroniccontroller.All oftheelectronicsnecessaryto operate thepowerchair
arecontainedinone module. Seefigure5a.

WARNING! If your power chair begins to move in an unexpected manner, immediately
release the joystick. Unless the joystick is damaged, this action should stop your power
chair.

On/Off Key

WARNING! Unless faced with an emergency
situation, do not use the on/off key to stop the
chair. This will cause the power chair to stop
abruptly.
WARNING! Always turn the power off when you

Battery Condition Meter

See figure 5b. This is a 10-segment illuminated display that
indicatesthat the VSI is turnedon and also gives thebattery

Off-board Charger/Programming Socket
Youmayuseanoff-boardchargertochargethepowerchairbatteriesthroughthe3-pinsocketlocatedonthefront
oftheVSI.Seefigure5a.Ifyouuseanoff-boardcharger,thechargercurrent should not exceed 12 amps. Contact
yourauthorisedPrideproviderformoreinformation.
CAUTION! Only chargers with Neutrik NC3MX plugs should be connected to the off-board
charger/programming socket. See your authorised Pride provider for more information.
NOTE: The socket may also be used for reprogramming the VSI. Contact your authorised Pride provider

Controller Connector
Thisconnects theVSIto the powerchair’sbatteries, motors,and motor brakes.
3-pin Charger Inhibit Connector
Thisconnects theVSIto the onboardbattery charger.This connectionprovides aninhibit that disablestheVSI
whenthebatterycharger is on. Thechargerinhibitconnectoris coded with coloreddots.Thedotsare positioned
sothat you alignthe flat sideof the maleconnector with theflat side ofthe female connectorbefore making the
connection.
CAUTION! Failure to properly align the connectors can result in damage to the VSI, the
charger, and the connectors.
Thermal Rollback
TheVSIcontrollerisequippedwithathermalrollbackcircuit.Thecircuitmonitorsthetemperatureofthecontroller,
which roughly translates to motor temperature. In the event that the VSI controller becomes excessively hot
(above 60° C/140° F), motor current (amperage) is reduced. For every degree above 60° C/140° F, the motor
currentlimitisreducedby .55ampsuntiltheVSI controllerreaches70°C/158°F,atwhichtimethecurrentoutput
isreducedto zero.Thisreducesyourpower chair’s “power,”whichcould also reduceyourpower chair’sspeed,
andallowstheelectricalcomponentsandmotorstocooldown.Whenthetemperaturereturnstoasafelevel,your
powerchairresumesitsnormaloperation.

Troubleshooting
TheVSIcontrollerisdesignedwiththeuser’ssafetyastheprimeconsideration.Itincorporatesmanysophisticated
self-test features which search for potential problems at a rate of 100 times per second. If the VSI detects a
problemeitherinitsowncircuitsorinthepowerchair’selectrical system, it may stop the power chair,depending
ontheseverityofthe problem.TheVSIisdesignedtomaximisetheuser’ssafetyunder all normalconditions.The
tablebelowidentifiestheindividualerror codes. Errorcodesaredisplayedasarapid flashing of thelights.Ifyou
getone of theseerror codes,contact your authorisedPride provider.
1 The battery needs charging or there is a bad connection to the battery. Check the connections
to the battery. If the connections are good, try charging the battery.
2 The left motor has a bad connection. Check the left motor connection.
3 Theleftmotor has a short circuit toabatteryconnection.ContactyourauthorisedPrideprovider.
4 The right motor has a bad connection. Check the right motor connection.
5 Therightmotorhasa short circuit toabatteryconnection.Contactyour authorised Prideprovider.
6 Thepower chair is beinginhibitedby the batterycharger. Unplugthebattery charger.
7 A joystick fault is indicated. Make sure that the joystick is in the neutral (center) position before
turningonthe controller.
8 A control system fault is indicated. Make sure that all connections are secure.
9 Theparking brakes have abadconnection.Check the parking brakeandmotor connections.
Makesure the controller connections aresecure.
10 An excessive voltage has been applied to the controller. This is usually caused by a poor
battery connection. Check the battery connections.
