Die Messerschmitt Bf 109 war seit ihrem Erstflug im September 1935 der Standardjäger der
deutschen Luftwaffe und bis zum Ende des Krieges das Rückgrat der Jägerverbände. Während
sich der neue Jäger im spanischen Bürgerkrieg noch allen anderen Flugzeugen weit überlegen
zeigte, war den Verantwortlichen klar, das die rasche Entwicklung in der Militärluftfahrt eine
stetige Weiterentwicklung notwendig machte. So wurde auch die Bf 109 ständig weiterent-
wickelt obwohl sie bereits von Beginn an mit allen Möglichkeiten der damaligen Technik aus-
gerüstet war. Dazu zählten vor allen Dingen Vorflügel die automatisch in bestimmten
Geschwindigkeitsbereichen ausfuhren und die Langsamflugeigenschaften entscheidend ver-
besserten. Dazu kamen ein geschlossenes Cockpit und ein Einziehfahrwerk. Während die
Baureihen B, C und D noch mit einem Jumo 210 - Motor ausgerüstet waren der knapp 700 PS
Leistung brachte, stand ab 1938 mit dem neuen Daimler-Benz DB 601 ein Motor mit
Benzineinspritzung und einer Leistung von 1 050 PS zur Verfügung der eine völlige Überar-
beitung der Bf 109 möglich machte. Es entstand die Bf 109E-Serie, die auch in die Schweiz ver-
kauft wurde. In den ersten 8 Monaten des Jahres 1939 wurden über 1 100 Maschinen der
Versionen E-1 bis E-3 gebaut, die sofort bei den verschiedenen Jagdgeschwadern in Dienst
gestellt wurden. Die ultimative Variante der E-Baureihe war die E-4, die vor allen Dingen
während der Luftschlacht um England in der Lage war sich gegen die gegnerischen Hurricane
und auch gegen die Spitfire durchzusetzen. 631 Hurricane und 403 Spitfire der Royal Air Force
gingen in den knapp 4 Monate dauernden ständigen Luftkämpfen der“ Battle of Britain“ ver-
loren - die meisten durch Bf 109. Gegenüber dem Vorgängermuster E-3 verfügte die E-4 über
einen verstärkten Kabinenrahmen und eine stärkere Bewaffnung in Form von zwei MG FF/M
(M - für Minengeschosse geeignet), Kaliber 20 mm, im Rumpf über dem Motor, statt den bis-
her verwendeten MG 17 mit Kaliber 7.9 mm. Zusätzlich erhielt die E-4 eine 8-mm-Kopfpanze-
rung zum besseren Schutz des Piloten. Die Reichweite der Bf 109 erwies sich bei den Einsätzen
über dem Ärmelkanal und Südengland als viel zu gering, außerdem sollte die 109 nun auch in
der Lage sein Jagdbombereinsätze zu übernehmen. Die Ausrüstung mit dem 1175 PS starken
Daimler Benz DB 601Aa (bei E-4) und später mit dem gleich starken DB 601N (als E-4/N) war
dafür eine gute Basis. Ausgerüstet mit der „So-3 Ausstattung“, der Möglichkeit zum
Anbringen einer Bombenabwurf-Anlage für 4x 50kg oder 1x 250 kg-Bomben, entstand so die
E-4/B. An dem gleichen ETC unter dem Rumpf konnte auch statt der Bomben ein 3oo Liter-
Zusatztank verwendet werden. Die Großserienfertigung der Baureihe E-4 begann im Herbst
1940. Gebaut wurden 496 Maschinen. Dazu kamen noch eine nicht bekannte Anzahl von
Umbauten vorhandener Bf 109 E-1 bis E-3, die von den Geschwadern zurückgegeben wurden
und werksseitig auf den Standard E-4 umgerüstet wurden. So kann es durchaus sein, das eine
als E-1 oder E-3 gebaute Maschine später von einer E-4 kaum noch zu unterscheiden ist.

Since its maiden flight in September 1935 the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the standard fighter
of the German Air Force and remained the backbone of its fighter wings until the end of the
war.
Whilst the new fighter showed itself to be far superior to all other aircraft during the Spanish
Civil War, it was clear to the military hierarchy that the fast development in the field of mili-
tary aviation meant that a continued development was necessary. And so, even though they
were equipped right from the start with all the available technology of the day, development
of the Bf109 continued. Above all this included the leading edge slats that deployed auto-
matically in certain speed ranges and considerably improved the low speed flight characteris-
tics. An enclosed cockpit and retractable undercarriage were also included. Whilst the Series B,
C and D still were still fitted with a Jumo 210 engine which produced almost 700 bhp in 1938
the new Daimler-Benz DB601 became available, an engine with a power output of 1050 bhp
which made a complete overhaul of the Bf 109 possible. The result was the Bf 109E model,
which was also sold to Switzerland. In the first eight months of 1939 over 1100 E-1 to E-3
Series aircraft were built, and were immediately put into service with various Fighter Wings.
The E-4 was the ultimate of the E Series models, which above all were able to assert them-
selves against enemy Spitfires and Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain. The Royal Air Force
lost 631 Hurricanes and 403 Spitfires in the almost continuous aerial fighting of the nearly four
month long „Battle of Britain“, most to the Bf 109. In contrast to its predecessor the E-3, the
E-4 had a strengthened cockpit framework and a heavier armament in the form of two FF/M
20mm calibre machine guns (M = suitable for mine munitions) in the fuselage above the
engine, instead of the 7.9mm calibre machine gun which had been used up until then.
Additionally the E-4 received a layer of 8mm upper armour for improved protection of the
pilot. In action over the English Channel and Southern England, the range of the Bf 109 proved
to be much to short. The ME 109 was now also required to perform Fighter-Bomber missions.
Fitted with the powerful 1175 bhp Daimler Benz DB 601Aa (E-4) and later the equally power-
ful DB 601N (E-4/N) it was a good platform for this type of mission. The E-4/B model evolved
from the addition of the „So-3 Fit“ which incorporated an option to fit a Bomb Release Unit
capable of carrying 4 x 50Kg bombs or 1 x 250kg bomb. Instead of the bomb’s, a 300 litre
auxiliary fuel tank could also be mounted on the same ETC bomb-rack under the fuselage.
Major production of the E-4 Series began in the Autumn of 1940. 496 aircraft were built.
Additionally there was an unknown number of modified E-1 to E-3 Bf 109’s available, which
were returned to the factory by the Squadrons and modified to the E-4 standard. It is there-
fore quite possible that a modified E-1 series aircraft was impossible to distinguish from a later
E-4.
