Safety Statements

7. Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

(including amplifiers) that produce heat.
9. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarized or grounding-type plug. A polarized plug has two
blades with one wider than the other. A grounding type plug has two blades and a third grounding
prong. The wide blade or the third prong is provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit
into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete outlet.
10. Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plugs, convenience
receptacles, and the point where they exit from the apparatus.
11. Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
12. Use only with the cart, stand, tripod, bracket, or table specified by the manufacturer, or sold with the
apparatus. When a cart is used, use caution when moving the cart/apparatus combination to avoid
injury from tip over.
13. Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
14. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been
damaged in any way, such as power supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled or
objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not
operate normally, or has been dropped.
15. To completely disconnect this equipment from the AC mains, disconnect the power supply cord plug
from the AC receptacle.

1. Introduction
This Deployment Guide will guide the installer through the process of installing, configuring, and adding a
SmartMediaPro chassis to a Blueprint configuration.
Before You Begin
Read through this document in its entirety and ensure that the following required items are available:

Front Panel (SSP-0600)
Standby
Power (hole)
Insert pin into hole and hold for 5 seconds while powered On by rear switch to place
controller in or out of Standby mode.
Power LED
Green: System has adequate power and is operating normally.
Red: System is in standby mode.
Off: System is not receiving power.
Status LED
Green: SSP-0600 Chassis is operating normally.
Green Flashing: Controller has a DHCP or static IP Address. Connecting to host.
Off:Unit is rebooting
Red: Firmware update has failed and unit will be rebooted.
Red Flashing: No IP Address/Connecting to Network.
Amber: Firmware update in process.
Amber Flashing: Controller has a link-local IP Address and is connecting to the host.
This applies to controllers that are not connected to an active router and may be
connected directly to a host.
Over Temperature or Hardware Failure
Status LED indication will be interrupted every 3 seconds with a solid Red
indication. For example, if the LED is flashing Green when a hardware failure occurs,
the LED will flash Green, solid Red,etc., in 3 second intervals.
Video LED
Off:HDCP keys received are valid. Encrypted video content remains protected.
Red Flashing: HDCP keys are invalid. Encrypted video content is unprotected.
Video may still be present as this state only indicates that HDCP sync has been lost.

Green: Fan Tray is installed.

Performs the same operation as a power cycle, no network settings will be lost.

4. Input and Output Module Installation
The module slots accept input and output modules in certain locations on the rear of the SSP-1200. Input
modules are only accepted by the upper 6 slots and output modules are only accepted by the lower 6
slots.
IMPORTANT! Module Installation Precautions
ELECTRIC DISCONNECT!
Power Offthe controller by setting the power switch on the rear of the chassis to Off(O) and remove the
power cord before inserting or removing any module from the SmartMediaPro chassis. Failure to do so
may cause damage to the equipment.
IMPORTANT! Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Warning:
Observe the following precautions to avoid damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD) when handling
modules.
•Use an approved ESD wrist or ankle-grounding strap. Ensure the grounding strap makes good skin
contact.
•Connect the clip end of the ground strap to a threaded grounding stud on the chassis.
•When returning a replaced module to Savant, place the module in the ESD approved clamshell package
in which it was originally shipped in or a static shielding bag.
NOTE:
The wrist strap only protects the component from ESD voltages on the body; ESD voltages on clothing
can still cause damage.
Module Installation
Refer to IMPORTANT! Module Installation Precautions above before installing module.
1. Power Offthe SmartMediaPro Chassis using the power switch located on the rear of the chassis and
disconnect the AC power cord.
2. Remove the two (2) M3 x 6 mm retaining screws. Set screws aside as they will be used later in
procedure.
3. Align the module board with the two rails located at the bottom of the opening and gently slide the
module all the way until a slight resistance is felt. This is where the connector on the rear of the
board gets seated into the chassis connector.
4. Gently press on the module the rest of the way until it seats into the connector at the rear of the slot
and the plate seats against the chassis.
5. Insert the screws removed in step 2 and tighten.
6. Make note of the slot the module was installed as it will be needed for Blueprint configuration.

Module Removal
Refer to IMPORTANT! Module Installation Precautions above before removing module.
1. Power Offthe SmartMediaPro Chassis using the power switch located on the rear of the chassis and
disconnect the AC power cord.
2. Remove the two (2) M3 x 6 mm retaining screws. Set screws aside as they will be used later in
procedure.
3. Insert the removal tool into the removal tool slot.
For Vertical Removal Slots: Face the notch in the tool downward and insert the tool into the slot in
the module faceplate.
For Horizontal Removal Slots: Face the notch in the tool to the left or the right.
4. Hook the tool onto the faceplate.
For Vertical Removal Slots: Lower the tip of the tool downward and with slight outward pressure,
pull the module outward. A slight resistance will be felt as the module is unseated from the chassis
side of the connector.
For Horizontal Removal Slots: Move the tool to the left or the right and with slight outward
pressure, pull the module outward. A slight resistance will be felt as the module is unseated from
the chassis side of the connector.
5. Slide module out until it is completely removed from chassis.
6. If the module is being replaced, refer to the Module Installation instructions for proper installation
procedure.
7. If the module is not being replaced, install a blank plate using the two (2) M3 x 6 mm screws
removed in step 2. This will ensure that proper airflow through the chassis is retained as well as
preventing dust and debris from entering the chassis.

5. Installation
Rack Installation
SmartMediaPro chassis can be mounted in a 3U
(SSP-0600) or 6U (SPP-1200x) rack style
enclosure. The chassis and included rack ears
are compatible with all standard 19-inch
National Electrical Manufacturers Association
(NEMA) rack mounts.
Ethernet Connection
The SmartMediaPro communicates with the host via the wired Ethernet connection.
See Appendix A: Network Requirements for more information on configuring SmartMediaPro network
settings.
Control Connections
The SmartMediaPro control connections send data to a device for control and receive data from devices
to display current status on the user interfaces. Each port type can support multiple protocols that are
determined by the logical connection within Blueprint.
Savant recommends planning control connections and protocols to be used prior to building any cables
and connecting equipment. This will ensure that devices will respond to commands and will not be
damaged by an incorrect cable configuration.

RS-232 Wiring
Note:
CTS/RTS handshaking is supported for flow control based on the profile used in the configuration.
RS-422/RS-485 Wiring
RJ-45 to DB9 Adapters
Savant offers RJ-45 to DB9 adapters in a variety of configurations that can be used for RS-232/422/485
control.
Refer to the RS-232 Conversion to DB9 and RS-422/485 Pinout Application Note located on the Savant
Community for more information on RJ-45 to DB9 adapters.
IMPORTANT! If you are using RJ-45 to DB9 adapters not supplied by Savant:
•Ensure that any wires required for communication/control are terminated within the adapter.
•Ensure that all wires NOT required for communication/control are NOT terminated in the connecter.
•Ensure that the unused wires in the connector are cut to prevent them from shorting out, as they are still
terminated in the RJ-45 connector on the controller side.
IR Wiring
IR connections are made using 6-pin Screw Down Plug-in Connectors supplied with the controller. The
wire slips into the hole and locks with a screw located at the top of the connector.
IMPORTANT! IR Wiring Precautions
•Ensure that all IR emitters are within 15 feet (4.6 meters) from the location of the controller.
•Use of 3rd party flashing IR emitters with Talk Back is not recommended. These types of emitters can
draw voltage away from the IR signal that can degrade IR performance.

GPIO Wiring
General Purpose Input/Outputs (GPIO) are binary I/O ports used on Savant controllers to trigger an
action within the system. Events can control a device, such as turning on an amplifier (output) or
detecting a state change for a device (input) to perform a workflow. Pins 2-8 are used for input or
output depending on configuration.

Relay Wiring
Relay ports are used when a device is controlled via a normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC) relay.

Host HDMI Connection
The SmartMediaPro Matrix contains two Host HDMI inputs that are used for streaming iTunes from a Pro
Host. Connection to the chassis varies based on the host model being used. Refer to the Savant Pro
Host (SVR-4500x, SVR-5000S) Deployment Guide located on the Savant Community for connection
guidelines.
Refer to the Adding a Connection for Streaming iTunes section for Blueprint connection details.
Audio and Video Connections
Connections for audio and video vary based on the installed input and output modules. Refer to the
Quick Reference Guide supplied with the module for connection information.

AC Power Connection
SURGE PROTECTION!
Use a surge-protected circuit for all components and power supplies requiring 100-240V AC 50/60 Hz
source power.
ELECTRICAL DISCONNECT!
The source power outlet and power supply input power sockets should be easily accessible to
disconnect power in the event of an electrical hazard or malfunction.
Power Management Recommendations
Savant recommends a pure sine wave uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with the ability to shut down
the Savant Host before the battery runs out of power. Never remove power from the Savant Host before
shutting it down.

6. Blueprint Configuration
A basic configuration for the SmartMediaPro Controller contains the following components. While other
items can be added to the configuration, these items are the typical components that are used in a
system.
•SmartMediaPro chassis (SSP-0600 | SSP-1200 | SSP-1200R)
•Sources of various media types (SavantMedia Server, Apple TV, etc.)
•Amplifier for audio distribution
•HDTV Displays
•Speakers
•Savant Host (Pro Host)
