1 Introduction
1.1 Purpose
This ST750 Family Controller Configuration document is designed to assist the process of final
build, through manufacturing and onward delivery to UK field services. The document will also
provide guidance for UK configuration engineers, when defining controller makeup at the
requisition stage.
1.2 Scope
The ST750 family comprises three basic units the ST750ELV, the ST750LV and the ST750LED.
This document has been written to allow the reader to identify the controller variant of interest,
proceed to the appropriate section, and progress through the identified section and choosing the
appropriate configuration. The appropriate section will allow the engineer to gather information on
new controller configuration, add new options to the controller, or define the configuration of a
controller.

1.5 Pre-Requisites for Field Service Operative
1.5.1 Qualifications
Only skilled or instructed personnel with relevant technical knowledge and experience, who are
also familiar with the safety procedures required when dealing with modern electrical/electronic
equipment, are to be allowed to use and/or work on the equipment. All work shall be performed in
accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 or the relevant local, state and
government regulations.
Any personnel working on an ST750LV or ST750ELV Controller should have completed the
following training courses:
•HA Sector Scheme Sector 8 Modules 5XX
•M608 – Pedestrian Traffic Controller Maintenance for ST750ELV, and/or
•M608 – Pedestrian Traffic Controller Maintenance for ST750LV
Training requirements for non UK users may be different.

2 ST750ELV, ST750LV and ST750LED Overview
2.1 ST750ELV Overview
The ST750ELV Controller is designed to avoid the use of on-street voltages that exceed the
nominal ELV limit of 50V. This offers increased electrical safety for engineers working on and
around the intersection, and improved lamp monitoring of very low power LED traffic/pedestrian
signals. An additional benefit of the ST750ELV variant is simplified cabling in the controller. The
core functional unit of the ST750ELV is the Backplane Rack Assembly, which can be supplied as
a standalone module. More often, the Backplane Rack Assembly will be supplied as part of a fully
functioning Pedestrian Controller. The Controller can be supplied either as Single Pedestrian
Controller (2 Phase), Dual Pedestrian Controller (4 Phase) or Small Export Controller (6 Phase).
There are two ST750ELV cabinet options generally available; 400S Small Outercase, ST900
Large Outercase.
2.2 ST750LV Overview
The ST750LV utilises mains 230V voltage to provide a low voltage variant of the ST750LV
controller. The ST750LV can be supplied either as Single Pedestrian Controller (2 Phase), Dual
Pedestrian Controller (4 Phase) or Small Export Controller (6 Phase). The low voltage version of
the ST750LV controller is a direct development of the ST700, and therefore retains the
functionality seen within that controller. The familiar ‘biscuit tin’ construction has also been
retained. The ‘biscuit tin’ contains the base functional components. The ST750LV is generally
available in a 400S Small Outercase or a ST900 Large Outercase version.
2.3 ST750LV LED Overview
The ST750LED Controller is very similar to the ST750LV, but has been upgraded to lamp monitor
‘Helios CLS (NLM)’ LED Traffic Signals. The ST750LED can be supplied either as Single
Pedestrian Controller (2 Phase), or as Dual Pedestrian Controller (4 phase). Please note the
ST750LED is not available as a Small Export Controller (6 phase). Further information is
available in Handbook 667/HB/32921/007.

3.1 ST750ELV Outercase Selection
With reference to Table 5 the ST750ELV can be specified in two base cabinets; the 400S,
referred to as the Small Outercase or the ST900, referred to as the Large Outercase. Handbook
667/HB/32750/000 has details on the cabinet dimensions. With knowledge of the number of
traffic streams to be controlled, and with reference to Table 5, the basic functional cabinet can be
specified. The Outercases listed in Table 5 are equipped, at order time for onward configuration,
with the following major items:
•ST750ELV Backplane Rack Assembly (configured with the appropriate PCBs)
•Mains Transformer
•Master Switch Assembly
•Back Panel
The basic functional and control units for the controller are contained within the ST750ELV
Backplane Rack Assembly. This unit can be ordered as a standalone (Cuckoo) unit and fitted to a
controller cabinet. With reference to Table 5, the ST750ELV can be ordered for the UK
applications in a Small Outercase (400S), a Large Outercase (ST900) or as a ST750ELV
Standalone (Cuckoo) Backplane Rack Assembly. A single traffic stream separated by an Island
will require a Dual Pedestrian Controller to be specified.
Note: A swing frame is not fitted as standard in any of the cabinets.

3.2 ST750ELV Backplane Rack Assembly
3.2.1 Backplane Rack Assembly General Information
The ST750ELV Backplane Rack Assembly forms the base functional unit for the ST750ELV
controllers, which are shown in Figure 1,Figure 4 and Figure 5. The three controller variants
consist of; the Gemini/Detector Swing Frame variant in a 400S, the 11” Swing Frame variant in a
400S and the 19” Swing Frame variant in a ST900. These variants are detailed in the
paragraphs below.

Warning! Figure 1 shows a Gemini² unit, full configuration details of which are detailed
later in this document. It is important that the Gemini Last Gasp Dial Battery, within the
Gemini Power Supply Unit, is orientated correctly; the battery terminal must be facing up.
If the unit is to be mounted in such a way that the battery terminals are not facing up then it is
necessary to implement certain modifications to ensure that the battery is not operating upside
down. Please refer to document 667/HB/32600/000 for the necessary modifications.

independently, depending on required configuration. Figure 2 and
Figure 3 below show more detail.

Warning! Figure 5 shows a Gemini² unit, full configuration details of which are detailed
later in this document. It is important that the Gemini Last Gasp Dial Battery, within the
Gemini Power Supply Unit, is orientated correctly; the battery terminal must be facing up.
If the unit is to be mounted in such a way that the battery terminals are not facing up then it is
necessary to implement certain modifications to ensure that the battery is not operating upside
down. Please refer to document 667/HB/32600/000 for the necessary modifications.

3.2.2 Backplane Rack Assembly
The ST750ELV Backplane Rack Assembly is configured with the appropriate PCBs to drive the
required controller. This unit is attached to the Outercase Back Panel, as shown in Figure 1.
There is no requirement to specify the Backplane Rack Assembly separately as it contained
within the specified Outercase, chosen from Table 5. A short description of each of the
ST750ELV Backplane Rack Assembly components is provided below. Specific information on
each component should be sought from ST750ELV Handbook 667/HB/32750/000.
Backplane Board.
The Backplane Board provides connectivity between the ST750ELV Backplane Rack Assembly
PCBs and the components external to the ST750ELV Plane Rack Assembly.
With reference to Figure 6 and Figure 7, the Backplane Board houses the phase termination
blocks, to which the phase supply connection are made. The Backplane Board also houses the
termination blocks providing; Detector Power, Audible/Tactile Power and I/O connections, etc.
This unit will vary slightly in construction based whether a single or dual pedestrian controller has
been specified; the number of phase termination blocks will be double on the dual pedestrian
controller.
PL9 should be connected to the output from the mains transformer, refer to paragraph 3.5 below.
If a Gemini2or Stratos Outstation unit is fitted and this module is required to monitor lamp
supplies, a connection to PL12 should be made. For further information on this option please
refer to documents 667/HB/32600/000 and 667/HB/52250/000.
3.2.3 LSLS Card
The LSLS Card is plugged directly into the Backplane Board, as shown in Figure 6 and Figure 7.
It has no external connection in standard operation. The ST750ELV can be specified to operate
in three modes, and therefore will be configured with the appropriate LSLS Card. This card
provides the drives for the Helios CLS units.
•Single Pedestrian Controller (2 Phase/16 output – LSLS Card )
•Dual Pedestrian Controller (4 Phase/32 output – LSLS Card)
•Small Export Controller (8-10 Phase/32 output – LSLS Card)
3.2.4 Combined PSU / I/O Module
With reference to Figure 6, the combined PSU / I/O module generates the -48V lamp supply,
which is derived from the Mains Isolation Transformer. The I/O circuitry provides 24 Inputs and 4
Outputs, made available at the Back Board Digital Input and Relay Output Terminal Blocks. This
unit is also completely contained with the ST750ELV Backplane Rack Assembly and has no
external connections. It is plugged directly into the Backplane Board, also shown in Figure 6 and
in Figure 7.

3.2.5 CPU PCB
The CPU PCB will be configured with the appropriate firmware for the variant of Outercase
specified. The CPU PCB in completely contained within a sub division of the ST750ELV
Backplane Rack Assembly, and is mounted vertically. The CPU PCB is connected to several
other PCBs, within the ST750ELV Backplane Rack Assembly and to external units.
A 34 way ribbon cable from the manual control panel is connected into the central 34 way socket
at the rear of the CPU PCB, connector X2.
The 16 way Molex plug at the bottom rear of the CPU PCB, connector X4, is connected to PL7 on
the Backplane Board.
Communications between the CPU PCB and Intelligent Detector Backplanes, detailed in
paragraph 6.7, are carried out via a high speed serial link, over RJ45/Cat 5 cable. Connection of
this serial link from the processor is carried as follows:
- PL1 on the PHS processor daughter board (part of the CPU PCB) is connected to SK10
on the Backplane Board.
- PL4 on the PHS processor daughter board is connected to SK11 on the Backplane Board.
- PL2 on the PHS processor daughter board is connected to serial IN socket on the first
Intelligent Detector Backplane. Refer to paragraph 3.7 below for details on Intelligent
Detector Backplane.
Note: An Input Output Expansion Kit can be specified, which also utilises the Fast Serial
Link. Please refer to section 3.8 for information on Input Output Expansion Kit.

3.3 Cabinet Back Plate
With reference to Figure 1, the Cabinet Back Panel provides the anchor point for several of the
control’s component parts. Stencilled graphics aid the positioning of some components. Other,
large components, have fixed positions. Please refer to the individual paragraphs below for
details on which component’s position requires optimization. The Cabinet Back Panel need not
be specified separately as it contained within the specified Outercase, chosen from Table 5.
3.4 Master Switch Assembly
When configuring a full controller this unit should not be specified separately as it contained
within the Outercase, chosen from Table 5.

Figure 9 and Figure 10 the main supply voltage is applied to the main ON/OFF
63A Double Pole Isolator, within the Master Switch Assembly, for onward supply to the
ST750ELV Traffic Controller.
The live connection is taken from the main ON/OFF mini circuit breaker and applied to a 20A
Master fuse.
The output from the 20A Master fuse is applied to a mains filter, detailed in Figure 10, for onward
distribution, via a dedicated 32A Isolator (Controller Switch), to the mains transformer.

An additional output is taken from the 20A Master fuse and supplied to additional 6A Mini Circuit
Breakers. These additional mini circuit breakers provide the controller working supplies,
independent of the main controller power - for example, to cabinet illumination or Gemini unit.
