About this document
Purpose
This Technical Manual provides a reference to commands and instructions to be
used during a system configuration.
Scope
This paper explains the basic concepts of Composer and the user interface for
MP4.70.
The goal is to explain how to use Composer in general. Also included in this
document are ways to use Composer that make configuration faster and easier.
Separate documents describe the use and purpose of specific software
components that can be integrated in Composer, such as Plug-ins.

have prior expertise and training in the field of safety and security, at least a
moderate level of familiarity with the Siemens Building Technologies product line,
and experience with the installation, configuration, and commissioning of security
management systems.

1Safety regulations
This section describes the danger levels and the relevant safety regulations
applicable to the use of the products described in this manual. Please read the
following work instructions as well as the preceding section

1.1 Country-specific standards
Siemens products are developed and produced in compliance with the relevant
international and European safety standards. Should additional country-specific,
and/or local safety standards or regulations concerning project planning,
installation, and/or operation of the product(s) apply, then these standards and/or
regulations must also be taken into account, in addition to the safety regulations
mentioned in the product documentation.
1.2 Commissioning and testing
 Activate security-, fire- and third party systems or devices only in the presence
of the person responsible.
 Abide by the safety regulations of the connected sub-systems when working on
management stations. This especially applies when switching-off system
components.
 Inform people before the testing of alarm devices; take the possibility of panic
reactions into account.
 Inform the alarm and fault receiving stations connected to the system before
carrying out any tests.
1.3 Modifications to system design and products
Modifications to a system or to individual products may cause faults or
malfunctioning.
Please request written approval from Siemens Building Technologies, FS-DMS,
and the relevant authorities concerning intended system modifications and system
extensions.

2Introduction - system description
The Composer (Common Project Services) is a common configuration tool
environment that provides:
 General user interface and common functionality to configure a security system
 General configuration environment that hosts Plug-ins
The Plug-ins can be plugged into Composer to form an environment devoted to the
configuration of the control units of a security system. Depending on the number
and kind of Plug-ins, this environment allows configuration of a single control unit
up to a large security system that includes several control units of different
disciplines (including the management stations). Data from configuration tools that
are not included can be imported with dedicated Importer Plug-ins.
The end user perceives a single application for the configuration activities, however
the system is made up of different pieces of software (Composer and the Plug-ins).

Composer runs under Windows 7/Vista/XP Professional/2008/2003 operating
system. You work with a project, which contains all the configuration data of a
certain site.

2.1 System architecture
Composer uses a client/server application. Both the client and the server part are
made up of many components, as shown in the following figure.

Composer provides services to the Plug-in component(s) that, in turn deal with the
data configuration for the control units.
Note: The client and the server do not necessarily need to reside on the same
PC. For details, see section Modes of operation [➙ 14].

3.1 Modes of operation
The following describes the different operational modes available in Composer.
For details on installation options, see section Installing Composer [➙ 22].
3.1.1 Stand-alone configuration
Composer can be installed on a single machine (Stand-alone configuration) as
shown in the following figure.
Stand-alone configuration
In this case only one user at a time works with Composer, as the client and server
reside together. An engineer who works in the field typically uses this configuration.
He configures the system on his laptop using Composer, and afterwards he
downloads the configuration into the management stations or network devices.
3.1.2 Remote Composer configuration
In the case where the server is not directly available to a client, the client can
connect remotely to the server. This allows for configuration when the server is not
physically present.
Remote configuration
A multi-user configuration is possible with Composer (where more than one
configuration person is simultaneously working on the same project).
We do
not , however, recommend this type of configuration.

Composer allows you to work with one project at a time. The project contains all
the configuration data of a certain site. The user interface looks like the following:

3.4 Nodes, properties, projects, and templates
3.4.1 Nodes
Any object of a security system that you need to configure is modelled by
Composer in a standardised way. Since these objects are organised in a tree
structure, they are called
nodes .

3.4.1.1 Node interface controls
The nodes are presented to you by using three different user interface controls:
 The Tree View , which shows the hierarchical structure of a project.
 The Data View , which shows the properties of a selected node.
 The Node View , which shows the property page of a selected node.
We will examine them in detail in sections The Tree View [➙ 62], The Data View
[➙ 68], and the Node View [➙ 73].
3.4.1.2 Node appearance and what it tells you
The appearance of a node and/or its corresponding text in the tree may provide
you with additional information regarding the object.

Item Description
A Map indicators:
 A node deposited on a map (automatic or manual page) has a
small green square next to its symbol.
 A node deposited on a map that is currently open for editing is
also labelled by text in red.
For more information about configuring graphical maps, see the
DMS8000 Graphical Map Configuration Guide (Doc. #
A6V10062441).
B A node whose configuration has changed since the last download
has blue text next to it as opposed to black.
For more information on downloading, see section Downloading
[➙ 85].
C A node linked to the Geographical tree is indicated by a small blue
box next to its symbol.
D A node which is Off-Scan is indicated by italics and a grey
background.
Note: The node icons appear in the same way in the Data View.
3.4.2 Properties
Nodes are grouped into node classes that are characterised by a set of properties.
Nodes that belong to the same node class have the same set of properties.
The Plug-ins define and publish the node classes according to the structure of the
objects they have to configure.
Properties are attributes of a node, which can assume different values according to
the need of the specific configuration.
A node inherits the set of properties of the node class it belongs to.

3.4.3 Projects
All the nodes that belong to the same installation of a security system (such as the
site) are stored in a
project .
You always work on a
document that is the project, which contains all the
configuration data of a certain site.
Projects are made up of nodes that are presented to you by using the three
different user interface controls (
Tree View , Data View , and Node View ).

3.4.4 Node Templates
A Node Template (or, simply Template) is a profile of nodes whose property values
are set to predefined values. Thanks to the Templates, it is possible to provide
nodes that are ready to be inserted in the project with proper values for all the
properties.
When you create a project, some predefined node templates will be present. You
add to these templates to configure a project with the organisation of the actual
site.
When you insert a node, you select the Template available for that node. The
system inserts an instance of the node, taking the actual values of the properties
from the Template. Predefined templates are contained in the Node Template
Toolbar, most organised in folders such as
Fire , Intrusion , Network , etc. The
following figure shows the node templates contained in the
Network folder.

Node Template example
Since a Template is not limited to one single node, but can contain many nodes
organised in a tree structure, this dramatically increases the power in building up
the configuration of the site.
In addition to the Templates defined by the Plug-in development teams, you can
also create new Templates at configuration time.
