If a fault develops, send the device to your SIEMENS representative for repair. Repairs on-site are

Bidirectional plug-in transceiver SFP
Bidirectional plug-in transceivers feature only one 󹪝ber connection. They transmit and receive
on two di󹪜erent wavelengths. To establish a connection, you need two matching bidirectional
SFPs. The connected SFPs must respectively transmit on the wavelength at which the
connection partner receives.

Improper mounting may damage the device or impair its operation.
• Before mounting the device, always ensure that there is no visible damage to the device.
Note
The plug-in transceivers are only developed for a limited number of plug-in cycles.
• Pull and plug the plug-in transceiver only as often as required.

Replacing components may impair suitability for Class 1, Division 2 or Zone 2.

Requirements for the cabinet/enclosure
The equipment shall be installed in a suitable enclosure that provides a degree of protection not
less than IP54 in accordance with EN/IEC 60079-15.
WARNING
Suitable cables at high ambient temperatures
If the temperature of the cable or housing socket exceeds 70 °C or the branching point of
conductors exceeds 80 °C, special precautions must be taken.
If the device is operated at ambient temperatures of between 50 °C and 70 °C, only use cables
with a maximum permitted operating temperature of at least 80 °C.

compatibility or for risk-free use of these components.
Note
Di󹪜erent colors of the clip
An SFP with multimode has a black clip and an SFP with single mode has a blue clip. To protect
the pins, these are 󹪝tted with a dummy plug.

With SCALANCE X, the pluggable transceivers can be plugged and pulled during operation. If

4.3 Using a pluggable transceiver (SFP/SFP+)
NOTICE
Electrostatic sensitive devices (ESD)
Plug-in transceiver are delivered in a carton. The cartons protect the plug-in transceiver against
direct contact and thus against ESD damages.
• Only unpack the plug-in transceiver in an ESD-protected mounting and installation area.
• Make sure that the corresponding safety measures are met if you use the plug-in transceiver:
– They are permanently grounded via an ESD wristband.
– You wear ESD shoes or ESD shoe grounding protection strip in connection with an ESD
base.
• Before touching an ESD, discharge your own body. To this purpose, touch a conductive,
grounded object immediately beforehand, e.g. a bare metal control cabinet part.
• Do not touch the electrical contacts of the PCB.
• Only always touch the plug-in transceiver at the metal enclosure.

Follow the steps below to insert a pluggable transceiver:
1. Make sure that the package is complete (Page15).
2. Check all the parts for transport damage.
WARNING
Do not use any parts that show evidence of damage
If you use damaged parts, there is no guarantee that the device will function according to
the speci󹪝cations.
If you use damaged parts, this can lead to the following problems:
• Injury to persons
• Loss of approvals
• Violation of the EMC regulations
• Damage to the device and other components
Use only undamaged parts.
3. Remove the plug-in transceiver from its packaging.
4. Make sure that the bracket at the plug-in transceiver is closed.
5. Insert the pluggable transceiver in the pluggable transceiver slot until you hear it engage, see
󹪝gure.
The pluggable transceiver is then 󹪝rmly secured.
6. Remove the sealing plug of the plug-in transceiver.
7. Insert the connecting cable into the pluggable transceiver until you hear it engage.
The connecting cable is then 󹪝rmly secured.
